Overseas exchange programmeYou will be encouraged to participate in overseas exchanges with our Erasmus+ partners.

Erasmus+ is a European Union student exchange programme. By providing a grant towards the cost of studying abroad, it helps you to study for part of your degree in a European partner institution.

Each Erasmus+ placement offers unique opportunities to learn new skills, experience life in another country and make new friends. Undergraduate students can undertake an Erasmus+ placement during their second year.

Benefits of becoming an Erasmus+ student include:

- Employability – you can demonstrate qualities that employers are looking for, such as

an ability to take on and adapt to new challenges and environments

- New experiences – have fun, meet interesting people and gain new skills

- Increased language proficiency – you can learn or master another language

- Personal growth – you can build confidence and independence by managing life in a different culture.

Professional recognitionThe Business School’s strong links to professional bodies and employers at home and abroad provide you with an opportunity to develop your practical skills and obtain a professional qualification.

Our graduates leave the university with enviable business expertise, industry knowledge from real-world experience and excellent communication skills.

Graduating from an accredited programme, you will be able to take accelerated routes into chartered membership of professional bodies. Certification or accreditation from an industry body will demonstrate that you have industry-standard skills which will make you more desirable to employers. If you attain chartered status, employers are also more likely to offer attractive benefits packages.

For example, if you achieve the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply qualification through its structured study programme and combine this with three years’ experience, you will be entitled to use the letters MCIPS after your name. This demonstrates your level of knowledge, professionalism and status among your industry peers, giving you an edge over your competitors.

Professional qualifications with international recognition reassures an employer that you understand the business practices of those countries and can adhere to the same rules and regulations as their local businesses.

Some of the professional bodies we work with include:

- Association of Chartered Certified Accountants

- Association of International Accountants

- Certified Practising Accountants Australia

Top trading challenge prizes for Greenwich business studentsTwo potential business experts from the University of Greenwich have won a prestigious national trading competition.

Colin Stevens, 23, and Vince Taddeo, 21, both studying for an economics degree, came out winners at the University Trading Challenge, held at Cass Business School. First year student Colin was named best trader

on the day. Vince, in his third year, won the best portfolio trader of the month.

The contest required students to demonstrate their ability to trade successfully in the financial markets, as well as make decisions, analyse data from real-life current market trends, and come up with winning strategies.

Dr Gabriella Cagliesi, Principal Lecturer in Economics at Greenwich, says: “I am so proud of Colin and

Vince, as well as their team mates and the members of our two trading societies, who came to support and encourage their friends!

The teams tackled trading challenges and enjoyed constructive feedback from experienced professional traders. There was also a tutorial on technical analysis provided by market giant Bloomberg.

The challenge sees a maximum of 25 teams compete and is open to all full-time finance and economics students studying at a UK university. It forms part of Greenwich’s wider interest in trading and preparing students for careers in the financial services industries.

Business Simulation Game SuccessAs part of their degree programme, a group of undergraduate third year students from the Systems Management and Strategy Department took part in a Business Simulation Game.

Their team name was called BGolden Tree Inc. and they competed against teams from other universities.

They managed to achieve 109.5 points out of 110, which positions them just 0.5 points from the top, based on Investor Expectations and Best In-Industry Scoring Standards.

The team, led by student Edgars Kruglovs together with Dzessika Litvinovica, Lavinia Romano and Samson Solarin featured at joint second place of this week’s Global Top 100 performers with another 5443 teams from 278 colleges and universities worldwide.

Congratulations Edgars, Dzessika, Lavinia and Samson for your well-earned success!

A talent for tourism: Heritage Minister’s praise for Greenwich studentsDavid Evennett MP, Tourism and Heritage Minister, said he admired the “creativity and passion” of our students during his visit. The minister spent time with students from the university’s Tourism Management degree as they discussed their studies, business ideas and career plans.

He said: “The future of the tourist industry is something very close to my heart, and without question its success depends upon recruiting talented people who are looking to make their mark in their careers. Greenwich students have shown me just how creative and enthusiastic they are.”

Undergraduate and Master’s Students outlined their plans to set up their own businesses in countries including the Philippines and Sweden, and to work in areas including hospitality, marketing and teaching, as well as in tourism across the UK.

My experience here has been

Successful placement achievement:James Woodland, Business Management student, has achieved a one-year placement with Airbus – one of the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers – after facing competition from more than 7,000 applicants.

As soon as James decided to apply for an Airbus placement, he sought support from the Employability Office. He was referred to Senior Consultant, Katherine Leopold.

“The advice she gave me was invaluable. We focused on interviews and the practical steps that I could take to improve my chances. She helped me get to grips with research into Airbus and stressed the importance of being prepared with focused, relevant questions to ask at the interview.

“I was particularly interested in the working culture Airbus promotes – known as the Airbus Way. They encourage people to interact and share their knowledge and experiences.”

After submitting his application, James, who is studying with the Business School, was invited to an

interview and to take part in a group exercise. The company then offered him a fourth, unadvertised placement in operations management.

“It is an amazing opportunity,” says James, “This placement is absolutely perfect for me – even better than the advertised placements. It gives me a major step up in my ambition to build a career in the aircraft industry.”

Ms Leopold, who has more than ten years’ experience with specialist London recruitment agencies, says she is delighted with James’ success.

“Industry experience is now essential,” says Ms Leopold, “The recent High Fliers report looking at the top 100 UK companies running graduate recruitment schemes reveals that 70 per cent do not even consider applications from graduates without significant industry experience.”

The Enterprise Challenge, open to all students, encourages you to come up with an idea and create a compelling business plan. To rise to the challenge you will be provided with resources, guidance from a mentor and advice for writing your business plan.

Preparation and development of your plan takes place throughout the academic year, leading to an annual event where the best ideas are pitched to a panel of judges. The top three winners receive a cash sum to turn their idea into a working business.

Previous winning ideas turned into

businesses include a 3D photo service, a unique shoe providing the benefits of walking barefoot and a weekend childcare service.

Congratulations to Dawn Marples and the Hope Centre, winner of this year’s Social Enterprise Challenge! The Hope Centre is a 12-week assessment centre which offers practical and emotional support to vulnerable mothers at risk of neglecting their children.

Dawn, who has just finished her second year studying Childhood & Youth Studies, came up with the idea in a team of seven, and worked on the entry for the Social Enterprise Challenge alongside studying.

Dawn represented the idea and group at the finals and will now focus on registering her social enterprise and start running the Hope Centre. Dawn said that taking part in the Social Enterprise Challenge had helped her confidence, which she used in a recent interview to secure a new part-time role as a Learning Support worker for children with severe learning difficulties.

Great location, great campus Based at the university’s Greenwich Campus, the Business School offers a vibrant, inspiring and diverse location to study. London, one of the most exciting capital cities in the world, is on your doorstep.

With rich historical foundations as the birthplace of King Henry VIII, the Greenwich Campus boasts wonderful surroundings such as the River Thames, National Maritime Museum and the Queen’s House within Greenwich Park.

Greenwich is the university’s largest campus and is centred on three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The London Evening Standard newspaper described the site as “A university campus to rival ... Oxford’s spires or the Great Court at Cambridge ... the setting is undoubtedly one of the grandest of any university in the world.”

Our historic buildings are also home to modern facilities, the latest innovative

resources, state-of-the-art systems, TV studios and a modern art gallery.

The Stockwell Street library, opened in 2014, provides a modern and inspiring environment for studying, with computer and printing facilities and bookable rooms for student group work. The library won ‘’Best Town Centre Project’’ at the London Planning Awards and was shortlisted for the 2015 RIBA Stirling Prize Award.

Scheduled to open in autumn 2018, our refurbished Dreadnought building on the Greenwich Campus aims to bring everything students need into one place. As well as providing a central hub for students, it will also be where our Students’ Union and our IT service will be based. There will be a gym, bar, places to eat and flexible social spaces. There’ll also be bookable rooms and confidential one-to-one spaces, as well as flexible teaching and study spaces and computer labs.

The campus is a popular location for TV and film productions. Now you see me, Gulliver’s Travels, Skyfall, Thor: The Dark World, Pirates of the Caribbean, Sherlock Holmes,

Les Miserables and The Muppets are just a few of the latest movies filmed here. Daniel Radcliffe, Morgan Freeman, Jack Black, Jesse Eisenberg, Johnny Depp, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway have all filmed here. You never know who you might see on site.

The campus is lovely and it’s

close enough to the rest of London to make the most of London life.Liam Cordrey BSc Hons Economics

Great social opportunities The Students’ Union (SU) is at the heart of student life at the University of Greenwich – a key element in your student experience and the best way to get to know other students and take on new responsibilities.

Whether you play sport, serve on a society committee, write articles for the magazine, broadcast your own radio show, or get elected as an officer (maybe even President), there are endless opportunities for you to get involved with your Students’ Union.

American Football, Cheerleading and Rugby are among the sporting societies actively competing at Greenwich. The SU also offers a

range of cultural societies, including those for students from Vietnamese, Italian, Romanian, Russian and Islamic backgrounds.

There is also a variety of business related student societies: Accounting, Banking and Finance, Economics and Business, Entrepreneurs, Marketing, Tourism, Trading and Investment, and the PR Fraternity.

The Student Union gives you the

opportunity to meet people from different places around the world, all in a similar situation to you. Kirupa Manoharan MBA International Business

These societies give you the opportunity to learn something new, share interests, get involved, meet fellow students, academics and guest speakers. The marketing society has over 100 members, while the PR Fraternity has established itself as one of the biggest societies on campus and is a platform that provides networking opportunities and access to exciting guest speakers.

Central London is less than 30 minutes from Greenwich by train and offers many ways to get together with friends, meet new people and generally make the most of your social life.

Teaching on my course is really

good, I’ve been really happy with it so far. Lecturers are interactive and they encourage creativity, which for me is quite important.Maria Georgieva BA Hons Advertising and Marketing with Spanish

The tutors seem to really know what

they’re talking about, and they really enjoy teaching and that inspires the students a bit more.Paulina Collins BA Hons Human Resource Management

I don’t think I would have got the grades

and the support that I got, if I hadn’t gone to the wellbeing team and they told me everything I could get from the university. Otherwise, I think I really would have struggled.Lauren Eagle-Allen BA Events Management graduate
