Florence Justice Center, 900 Greenwood St., includes the Florence Police Department, jailand municipal court. The Lane County Justice Court, which is responsible for the adjudi-cation of all criminal, misdemeanor, fish and game, marine, parks, traffic and civil com-plaints filed in the district, also resides there. CITY HALLFlorence City Hall, 250 Highway 101,

houses offices of the city manager, cityrecorder, community development (plan-ning), building department and financedepartment. Florence is governed by a mayor and fourmembers of city council, which oversees anumber of volunteer boards and commis-sions, including the Planning Commission,Urban Renewal Agency, Airport, Parks,Budget, Solid Waste and Transit.

PORT OF SIUSLAWThe Port of Siuslaw district covers 700

square miles of the Siuslaw River watershedand serves western Lane County. Five elect-ed commissioners meet in monthly sessions,which are open to the public, to overseeoperational decisions that the port managercarries out.

Within the Florence area, a number of transportation services are available to make traveleasy and convenient for both residents and visitors alike. From the Florence MunicipalAirport to the Rhody Express to local taxis, getting around town is a breeze. Also, only anhour’s drive from Florence is the city of Eugene, which offers a major airport, public bus

service and train service for residents.

FLORENCE MUNICIPAL AIRPORTNear the center of town, Florence

Municipal Airport handles light twin-engineand jet aircraft up to 12,500 pounds and fea-tures a 3,000-foot paved and lighted runwayas well as self-serve fuel, which is available24 hours a day.

The facility, just off Kingwood Street at2001 Airport Way, includes 23 hangars thatcan accommodate 34 aircrafts and one heli-copter, and there is room for additionalhangars on the field. Adjacent to the field arelight industrial-zoned lots available forlease, part of the Florence Industrial Park.

A courtesy car and bicycles are available,and the comfortable pilot lounge offers free

Wi-Fi, hot coffee, TV and flight planningaides. The lounge is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m. daily, except on major holidays.

The airport recently underwent major ren-ovations, including a new beacon, fenceupgrades and ramp improvements. ApexHelicopters also moved to the facility, offer-ing helicopter training and tours.

FRIENDS OF FLORENCEEach weekday the Friends of Florence

van offers a free shuttle service for cancer

patients receiving radiation treatments fromhealth centers in the Willamette Valley, driving from Florence to Eugene andSpringfield. Over the past 29 years, the vanhas transported nearly 30,000 patients totheir radiation treatments at the WillametteValley Cancer Institute and Research Centerin Eugene and Oregon Urology Institute inSpringfield.

The volunteer-driven van, which com-pletely relies on individual contributions andVan Fans fundraisers to cover costs of gasand upkeep, stops for cancer patients inFlorence, Mapleton, Walton, Noti andVeneta. Call 541-991-7818 for more infor-mation.


RHODY EXPRESSRhody Express, a community transit serv-

ice, operates Tuesday through Friday, from10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and provides transporta-tion around Florence for a small fee. Faresare $1 for one way or $2 for all day.

Up to 16 passengers can ride the bus atany one time, with seats near the front des-ignated for seniors and people with disabili-ties. The vehicle is wheelchair accessibleand includes space for wheelchairs as wellas bicycles.

Rhody Express runs along two routes,first the South Loop (from Grocery Outlet toOld Town to Three Rivers Casino and Hotel)and then the North Loop (from GroceryOutlet to Fred Meyer). Passengers mayboard the bus at any safe location along eachroute.

The bus operates on most days, except forNew Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth ofJuly, Labor Day, Thanksgiving andChristmas. Arrangements for route varia-tions must be made in advance.

anniversary this year since opening its doorsin Mapleton in 1964 followed by a branch inFlorence four years later, took home the StuJohnston Business of the Year for 2013award at the seventh annual Siuslaw Awardsbanquet.

“We’re very happy to celebrate 50 yearsof giving back to the Mapleton and Florencecommunity,” said Dee Osborne, SiuslawBank vice president and manager of theFlorence and Mapleton branches.

The Stu Johnston Business of the Yearaward is given to a business that has demon-strated long-term or significant success and

has shown strong and active communityinvolvement.

Siuslaw Bank, which now boasts 10offices throughout Lane County, continuesto give back to the community with itsemployee volunteer program. All 11 of theFlorence employees — out of a bank-widetotal of 125 — donated 440 hours of theirtime last year to volunteering.

“I am certainly honored andhumbled to just be mentioned inthe same sentence with PhilBrubaker and CraigMcMicken,” Tanikawa saidwhile accepting the award.“They’re both deserving to bestanding here for what they havedone for the community.”

Kylie Brandt was selected asFuture First Citizen of 2013from a notable group of herpeers that included ChelseyBartlett, Jacob Kirby and SaschaMcIntyre. Brandt has beeninvolved in leadership activities

since middle school and currently serves asthe high school’s student body president.

She plans to attend Western OregonUniversity in the fall and study psychologyfor childhood development. Brandt said ithas been “awesome to help out the commu-nity” while working with children throughlocal club activities.
