The first Chamber Sum-mit, “How to Grow Your Business During Difficult Times,” was held in Octo-ber at Maria Parham Medi-cal Center. For an event cost of $5, approximately 90 attendees were provided dinner, three chances for a $100 raffle, and sage advice.

In September, over 80 Cham-ber members attended a Busi-ness After Hours that was hosted jointly by the Vance County Arts Council; Kittrell Job Corps; Interiors and Gifts, Too; and the Rosemyr Corporation.

After a ribbon-cutting for the new Arts Council location at 233 South Garnett St., guests visited Interiors and Gifts, Too at 133 S. Garnett St. to sample food and beverages and listen to a live pia-nist while browsing through the store. Next, attendees visited the Rosemyr Corporation, which is lo-cated upstairs in the old Croatan Club and next to the arts council location. Finally, guests munched on hors d’oeuvres prepared by the culinary department at Kittrell Job Corps Center while drinking in the sights and sounds of local artists and the North Carolina Opera at the arts council facility.

The Vance County Farm Bureau hosted a Business After Hours in October at their loca-

tion at 2949 U.S. 1/158 North. Guests savored beverages and delectables prepared by employ-ees and families of Farm Bureau. The staff provided information on “Healthy Living For A Lifetime,” a service sponsored by North Carolina Farm Bureau which will provide health screenings to the under-served members of the community. The initiative provided screenings at no charge from a 50-foot mobile unit parked at Maria Parham Medical Center on Nov. 3.

At the end of October, a Busi-ness After Hours was co-hosted by Ted’s Service Company and the Henderson Family YMCA. The event was held at the YMCA, where guests were guided through the “Hall of Terror,” part of the YMCA’s Halloween festival.

The next Business After Hours will be hosted by Henderson Well-ness Center at 414 Dabney Drive and is scheduled for Jan. 27 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Thanks to all donor businesses who helped

with new teacher packagesThe Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Com-

merce would like to thank the 38 businesses who re-cently donated items for the 2010 new teacher packag-es. The Chamber businesses listed below participated by taking the opportunity to include their promotional items or coupons in the gift bags given to new teachers at this year’s New Teacher Orientation. This annual opportunity is offered exclusively to Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce members. If your busi-ness is interested in taking part in next year’s drive, contact Sylvia Edwards at the Chamber at 438-8414 or by e-mail at [email protected].

As part of National Farm-City Week, Vance County Farm Bureau is sponsoring the 2010 Farm-City Week breakfast on Nov. 18 at 8 a.m. in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church.

The featured speaker for the breakfast will be Mike Walden. Walden is a William Neal Reynolds professor and N.C. Cooperative Extension Service economist in the Depart-ment of Agricultural and Resource Economics in N.C. State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He teaches and writes on personal finance, economic outlook and public policy.

The mission of the National Farm-City Council is to enhance the linkages between farm families and urban residents, providing local organizations with educational pro-grams and materials about the people who grow their food.

In recent years, the major focus of the programs and materials has been on consumer and classroom education. Student activity sheets, teacher packets, place mats and bookmarks are just a few of the materials the council has created to support its mission.

In the past year, thousands of materials were used in classrooms, at farm-city banquets, at civic club meetings and in other venues. Farm-city activities are grassroots in nature. Communities across the nation hold farm-city events ranging from banquets to tours to job exchanges. Farm-city groups work closely with “Agriculture in the Classroom” programs in educating students and teachers about agriculture.

Registration deadline for the Nov. 18 event is Friday. For information or to register, contact the Chamber at 438-8414.

The 2010-2011 Teacher Executive Institute (TEI) program began in October with a dinner and orientation session for this year’s participants.

In its 17th year, the program will provide classroom teach-ers, counselors and media specialists with opportunities to participate in seminars where leadership and management skills are taught. Participants will visit a variety of business-es within the community where they will meet employees, tour the facilities, learn about the business and take part in seminars designed to broaden their skills base.

The overall intent of the program is to strengthen the partnership between business professionals and education professionals. Teachers and those in the business field will have the opportunity to understand each other’s role in pre-paring students to meet the challenges of the future.

This year’s Teacher Executive Institute participants are: Jennifer Wade, Aycock Elementary; Cristen Trantham, Carver Elementary; Rolly Quizo, Clarke Elementary; Kristy Harp, Dabney Elementary; Amanda Hightower, New Hope Elementary; Yolande Dixon, Pinkston Street Elementary; Doreen Gilliam, E.O. Carolyn Harris, who has been the principal of New Hope Elementary School for three years, has been selected as the Vance County Schools’ Principal of the Year for 2010-2011.

Harris was chosen as recipient of the honor from among the 16 principals in Vance County Public Schools. She was among three finalists interviewed by a special selection panel. Other finalists for the school system’s Principal of the Year were Brian Creasman of Northern Vance High School, and Larry Webb of Eaton-Johnson Middle School.

Harris led her school to designation as a North Carolina School of Distinction, an honor received from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction after 80.2 percent of students in grades 3-5 score at or above grade level in reading and mathemat-ics on state end-of-grade tests administered in May. New Hope was the top achieving elementary school in the local school system for the 2009-2010 school year.

In addition, New Hope Elementary met “adequate yearly progress” goals under the strict No Child Left Behind federal guidelines, and met “expected growth” criteria under state standards. The school’s fifth graders led all fifth graders in the school system by having the highest scores on the state science test. Last school year, 82.3 percent of New Hope’s fifth grad-ers scored at proficiency on the state test. This represented an increase from 55.6 percent proficiency on the science test in 2008-2009.

The achievements at New Hope Elementary are especially impressive considering the school’s demographics. Among stu-dents in grades 3-5 last year, a total of 93 percent of the popula-tion was economically disadvantaged. In addition, five percent of the students are identified as gifted in reading; eight percent of students are identified as gifted in math; 11 percent are iden-

tified as exceptional children; and five percent are identified as having limited English proficiency.

Before becoming principal at New Hope, Harris served as the school’s assistant principal for nine years under the leadership of Oddis Smith. Har-ris is now in her 33rd year in elementary educa-tion, serving as a classroom teacher for the first 21 years.

New Hope Elementary School has had no teacher turnover during the last two years. The N.C. Department of Public Instruction identifies New Hope as having a 100-percent highly quali-fied staff. New Hope has 75 percent of its faculty with 10 years or more of experience in education. The school also boasts an impressive number of community volunteers and business partners who play a major role in supporting the daily opera-tions of the school.

In her instructional leadership focus presented to the local Principal of the Year panel, Harris wrote: “I appreciate the op-portunity to be principal of New Hope School. I bring a variety of educational experiences to the school. I have had the wisdom to surround myself with dedicated staff whether in the cafeteria or in the classroom. I have no problem allowing others to make decisions, but I have no problem making difficult decisions.”

“The physical plant of New Hope is the best it has ever been, and the staff is most qualified,” she continued. “This transfor-mation was achieved by taking small steps each day and by doing what is best for New Hope’s students and staff. In the future, the New Hope staff will continue to strive to educate each child in the best way possible using all of the resources available. The best is yet to come.”

Harris will now go on to represent her peers in Vance County Schools in regional competition for the Wachovia Principal of the Year for North Carolina.

Take time to nominate2010 Citizen of the Year

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Com-merce is currently seeking nominations for the 2010 Citizen of the Year. This annual award honors an individual who has made a significant contribution and demonstrated a commitment to the advance-ment of Henderson and Vance County.

In order to be considered for the award, the nominee must be a resident of the Henderson-Vance County community and should be someone who enjoys a reputation for continuous community service in areas such as civic involvement, quality of life improvements, support of business and economic development, and humanitarian issues. Contribu-tions must be outside the realm of the individual’s occupation. Citizens and Chamber members are en-couraged to nominate persons they feel are deserving of this recognition. Nomination forms are available at the Chamber and should be submitted in writing to the Chamber office by Dec. 31.

Jim E. Chatman was recently named a winner in the Triangle Business Journal’s 2010 CFO of the Year Awards. Awards were presented to professionals in the Triangle who exem-plify excellence as corporate financial stewards.

A total of 47 finalists were recognized and 17 winners were named in 12 categories at the awards luncheon in July at North Ridge Country Club in Ra-leigh. Chatman won in the category for large private companies.

Triangle Business Journal, a weekly business newspaper, is the leading provider of local business news for the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina.

“Our CFO of the Year Awards were launched as a way to reward and recog-nize the best performing finance executives in the Triangle,” Charlene Grun-waldt, publisher of Triangle Business Journal, said. “This year’s winners have displayed a remarkable

track record of professional achievements and nonprofit involvement, and our com-munity is better off for their many contributions.”

In Chatman’s interview with the publication after receiving the award, he credits his parents with having been mentors for him through the years in helping him establish his strong work ethic. He said the best advice that he ever received was “if you work hard and do right by other people, then all else will

fall into place.” In describ-ing what makes him a top CFO, Chatman mentioned that a successful CFO does have a strong work ethic and is a good, positive role model for all employees in the organization. “A good leader is willing to roll up his sleeves and help others solve problems while com-municating a passion for the business and its people,” Chapman said.

Chatman quickly pointed out that a good leader is only as successful as his employees. “My success is dependent upon their success, and we have all accomplished much over the years. I really appreci-ate all they have done and continue to do for Maria Parham.”

Outside of work, Chat-man enjoys physical fitness and outdoor activities like boating, camping and fishing. He is also a self-proclaimed history buff and is involved with his church and the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Com-merce.

Robert W. Rich-ardson, executive director of the Maria Parham Healthcare Foundation, was re-cently honored with the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health and Rehabili-tation Sciences Dis-tinguished Alumnus Award. A graduate of the university, Rich-ardson was given the award at the school’s 40th anniversary celebration.

Richardson was commended for his accomplishments, leadership and success in the physical therapy field. After receiving bach-elor of science and master of educa-tion degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, Richardson earned a certificate in physical therapy from the D. T. Watson School of Physiat-rics. Richardson has many years of hospital experience in rehabilitation and physical therapy, including serv-ing as a former rehabilitation director and vice president at Maria Parham Medical Center.

An active member of both state and national physical therapy professional associations, Rich-ardson has received more than eight distinguished profes-sional awards.

As the executive director of the Maria Parham Health-care Foundation, Richardson leads the organization in achieving its goals of providing opportuni-ties to promote and

strengthen the hospital’s ability to attract and retain quality health-care practitioners, and acquiring state-of-the-art equipment and technology needed to provide high quality health care. In addition, the foundation supports educational programs for the hospital’s employees and medical staff members.

Chamber co-hosts candidates’ forum

The Vance County commissioners’ meeting room became the site of the 2010 Candidates’ Forum on Oct. 17. The stand-ing room only crowd of voters were given an opportunity to learn more about local candidates and to assist in formulating questions for them at the forum, which was hosted by the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce, The Daily Dispatch and WIZS. The event was aired on WIZS as it unfolded.

Opposed candidates were given an op-portunity to speak to the audience about their positions on issues pertinent to the upcoming election. Gene Purvis of Vance-Granville Community College served as moderator of the event. The forum’s format gave each candidate an opportunity to make an opening statement and then par-ticipate in a question-and-answer session. Each candidate was given the opportunity to respond to the questions within a 60- second time frame. Questions from the audience were submitted to members of the media panel for consideration.

Also part of the forum were members of the State Senate race in District 7, in-cumbent Sen. Doug Berger and challenger Michael Schriver. In the District 32 House of Representatives race, incumbent Rep. Jim Crawford was unable to attend, leav-ing Libertarian challenger Barbara Howe to field questions for that race.

Many locals took advantage of the op-portunity to pose questions to the candi-dates and said that they found the forum to be informative and helpful in their voting decisions.
