Presidents MessageRegional Prosperity Initiative at Six Months

Throughout 2009 and into early 2010, a number of economic and community development organizations led thecharge for the Joplin Regional Prosperity Initiative. The leadership of your Chamber, the Joplin Business &Industrial Development Corporation, Newman Innovation Center and Southwest Missouri Development Alliancebelieved it was a good time to reassess and refocus on the keys to our regions success as the economy began torebound.

The JRPI set aggressive goals and an aggressive funding campaign to reach those goals. We were fortunate tohave a number of great public and private sector supporters, including a number of surrounding communities, whowere willing to back their belief in a better future by providing the financial resources to go after the goals. Oneof the most exciting aspects was the extension of the regional effort into southeast Kansas. We had a number ofpeople there who saw that when it comes to workforce, transportation, housing and retail, state lines do not exist.

Since late March, the JRPI has been in the roll-out phase, with a number of activities already underway. First, and key, was the formation of the Governance Board. This Board, chaired by Bill Gipson of the Empire District Electric Company and vchaired by Pittsburg Mayor, Patrick OBryan, provides the top-level oversight of the JRPI and the actions of the entities.

Another key action was the recent Economic Development Game program at Downstream Casino Resort. This basics and trendsprogram was designed to get our current and, perhaps, future partner communities on the same page of economic development actions.More than 100 people from three states attended and gave the session great reviews. The headliner was Dennis Donovan, a nationallyrecognized site consultant who shared great insights on the competitive economy and suggestions on how our region better competes, froassisting local firms to attracting new ones.

We have also put efforts into workforce development, starting with a series of regional employer focus groups. These groups, led byAlexandria Marketing Research Group, provided input on the skills they need from current and future employees. The final results fromthese groups will be used to help area schools strengthen their curricula and encourage students to stay in school.

The JRPI has also focused on the marketing of the region, both for new company attraction and helping existing manufacturers find newmarkets. Examples of those actions include:

Development of a Wind Energy Suppliers network. This group of manufacturing, transportation and service companies is interein getting business in the expanding wind energy sector. The group had a presence at the national Windpower event in Mayand will be exhibiting at a smallWindpower event in December. (Any

regional firm is welcome to join, sopass the word along.)

Conducting a business retentioneffort aimed at reaching 100 regionalfirms. Already firms in Pittsburgand Columbus, KS and Lamar andCarthage, MO have been contacted.Joplin is underway now and Neoshowill be done yet this fall.

Still to come this year is attendanceat three trade shows: one on logistics/supply chains, one with private

label manufacturers and the other awindpower event representing the localsuppliers noted above. In addition, wewill be making calls on site locationsin two of the trade show cities whilewe are there.

Overall, the JRPI is off to a good start, withmuch more than just what is noted above. Thegoals over the next few years are aggressive, but we have the leadership to reach those goals. At six-months old, the JRPI is already walking. In 2011, the running begins.

    Julies Cookie Bouquet Shop

While baking some cookies at home one evening, Julie Madl wondered if there might be a niche market in the Joplin area that she could

help fill. In other cities she had observed companies that would bake cookies and arrange them to look like bouquets. With this moment

realization, Julies Cookie Bouquet Shop was born! With a lot of hard work, determination and research, Julie has come up with the perfrecipe for sugar cookies and royal icing for custom made cookie bouquets.

Julies Cookie Bouquet Shop has over a hundred different cookie cutters and can help you custom design your bouquet for that special

someone or occasion. When you visit the shop, there is a portfolio of pictures with all kinds of different bouquets made up for others th

might give you some ideas. The bakery also now takes orders for cakes made with fondant.

Julies Cookie Bouquet Shop bakes cookies daily including chocolate chip, peanut butter, lemon poppy, no bakes, orange macadamia nu

and sugar glaze (just to name a few), which can be purchased on a first come, first serve basis. If ordering a custom bouquet, a two day

notice is greatly appreciated. For more information, give them a call at 417. 623.0033 or stop by and see them at 921 East 20th Street,

the northwest corner of 20th & Indiana across the street from Joplin High School in the little white house.

Theres Such a Great Feeling when you Remove the Clutterf youve ever moved before, you know that part of the move involves packing the essentials for what you need that firstight in the new home. Ive moved about 15 times in my life and every time I live out of a suitcase for a day or two, Iealize that you really dont need a whole lot to function. Not only that, I find myself very happy and excited that a newhapter is starting in my life. And the absence of clutter is uplifting.

The worst thing I could do is pull all of the items I had at the last place into the new place. If I did, it would be moreluttered and start to feel too confining. You dont have to make a physical move to a new address to take a new look

t how you live life. Just call it a new season and see if there are ways you can make some changes.

Here are a few ideas to consider:. MASTER THE ABILITY TO FOCUS

By only living with the essentials, you will be able to focus much better than before. Just think about what is essential. Leave the otherhings in the garage, as they await their entry into your next garage sale. Having more stuff can sometimes complicate life.. GIVE SOMEONE A HAND UP

The 2010 census shows us that there are a lot more people living in poverty than ever before. Why not give some of your things away tohose less fortunate. A recent news story on CNN shows that some people really wonder if they will be able to have enough money to gethrough the week. You could be the person that changes their life. There may be certain items that you have two of. Why not give oneway to someone who needs it? And dont overlook books or CDs that may provide some real relaxation for someone who needs it.. DONT FORGET YOUR EXERCISE PROGRAMf you move to a new address and you are a runner, you have a new route that you will be using. That adds a nice new outlook on yourxercise program. And if you didnt move, this is a good time to shake things up and try something new. Choose a new type of exercise

njoy. Add some minutes to your exercise program. Do things in a different order.. MEET THE NEW YOU

Dont be afraid to be the new you. So many people dont make changes or try new approaches because others make comments or arehaken up by the new way we are doing things. Consider this: In order to find the true you, you have to take a full view. Explore yourptions and choose what feels right for you.. CARVE OUT TIME FOR YOURSELF

There will be times when you make a move that you are so exhausted, you just want to relax. It is those times that you realize howmportant it is to have Me Time, that special time that is just for you. So whether you moved recently or not, take time today to answerhis question:How long has it been since I took time to sit and think about how my life is going and what my mission in life is? Try it. You may leaomething you never knew.. TRIAGE YOUR OFFICE AREAust like hospital personnel triage the emergency room to see who has the most critical needs, take a look at your work area. Is everythinrder or does it need a good house-cleaning? If your desk is a mess, your mind is probably on overload, too, because you occasionally th

bout whats hidden and could come out to bite you.o whether you are moving to a new address or not, why not take a new look at your life. By doing this you will move to your next levelnd surprise yourselfas well as others. You will also set a great example for your children so that they learn how to be creative with lifnd achieve a lot more than they thought they could.Note: I normally check my e-mail at 4:30 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. central (USA) time. If you need me between those hours, call my cellelow.)
