IthasbeenanhonortoserveasAPRESpresidentthispastyear.WhenIfirstacceptedthenominaKontobecomeAPRESpresident,Ihadnoideaitwouldcoincidewithour50thAnniversary.AspecialthanksCorleyHolbrook,Chairofthe50thAnniversaryPlanningCommiaee,whowithhiscommiaeestartedplanningthismeeKng2yearsago.Thissocietyhascomealongwayin50years.Doyourememberwhatwastakingplace50yearsago?Technologyin1968involvedthemaidenflightofBoeing747,NASAlaunchedApollo7-thefirstmannedApollomission,AllenK.BreedinventedanairbagthatdeployedandinflatedautomaKcallyonviolentimpactusingnitrogengas,Dr.ChrisKanBarnardperformedthefirstsuccessfulhearttransplant,
Emergency911telephoneservicestartedintheUS,andFirstPhiladelphiaBankinstalledthefirstautomatedtellermachine(ATM).TheBigMacwentonsalefor$0.49,theBeatlescreateAppleRecordsandrecorded"HeyJude";CBSintroduced"60Minutes",andtheMusicalHairopenedatShaXesburyTheatreinLondon.Popularfilmsin1968includeTheGraduate,GuessWho'sComingtoDinner,BonnieandClyde,ValleyoftheDolls,TheOddCouple,PlanetoftheApes,andRosemary'sBaby.Finally,popularmusiciansin1968includedTheRollingStones,TheSupremes,TheBeatleswith--"HeyJude",FleetwoodMac,ArethaFranklin,GaryPuckeaandTheUnionGap,TheGratefulDead,TheMonkees,SimonandGarfunkel,TheBeachBoys,TheBeeGees,JimiHendrix,Cream,TheDoors,PinkFloyd,MoodyBlues,BobbyGoldsboro,MarvinGaye,andDavidBowie.
In1957,asmallworkinggroupcalledthePeanutImprovementWorkingGroup(PIWG)formedbecauseoftheneedtodevelopanaKonalpeanutresearchorganizaKon.ThelocaKonofthefirstPeanutResearchConferencewasinAtlanta,GA.PIWGevolvedintoAPREA(AmericanPeanutResearchandEducaKonAssociaKon)in1968,andAPREAbecameAPRESin1979.The1969ProgramCommiaeeMembersincludedW.K.Bailey,JamesEarlMobley,CurKsJackson,DanL.Hallock,SydneyC.Reagan,NormanDavis,J.FrankMcGill,andP.J.Tiemstra.The2018ProgramCommiaeemembersareRickBrandenburg,Chair;TomStalker,TechnicalProgramChair;MariaBalota,LocalArrangementsChair;BethLangston,SpousesProgramChair;andJackDavis,FunRunChair.The2018ProgramCommiaeedidanexcellentjobplanningandexecuKngthemeeKngthisyear.Thankyou!Thebudgetin1968-69included$4,392inincomeand$495inexpenses,forabalanceof$3,897.Thebudgetin2017included$123,387inincomeand$108,858inexpenses,forabalanceof$14,916.APREStotalassetsrosefrom

$157,060in1998to$338,233in2017,anincreaseof115%.TheExecuKveAPRESOfficerswhohaveplayedacriKcalroleinguidingAPREStosolidfinancialstandingincludeLelandTripp,1969-1974ExecuKveSecretary-Treasurer;CoytT.Wilson,1969-1977AdministraKveAssistant;DonaldSmith,1975-1983ExecuKveSecretary-Treasurer;BroadusBrown,1978-1983AdministraKveAssistant;RonSholar,1983-2007ExecuKveOfficer;JimStarr,2007-2013ExecuKveOfficer,andKimCutchins,2013-CurrentExecuKveOfficer.AspecialthankstoRonSholar,whoservedthelongesttermasAPRESExecuKveOfficer.ThankyouRonforyourdedicaKonandleadershiptothisorganizaKon.IamverythankfultohaveservedmyyearaspresidentwithKimCutchins,ourcurrentExecuKveOfficer.KimdoesanexcellentjobandconKnuestoexpandtheresponsibiliKesoftheExecuKveOfficer.APRESmembershipreached707in1987andhasexperiencedaslowandsteadydeclineto215in2011.Since2011,ourmembershiphasbeengrowingandhasexceeded300since2013.APRESmeeKngaaendancewas450in1991,545in1999,201in2012,andreached401(265aaendees,77spouses,59children)in2018.TotalmeeKngpresentaKonsinthelast20yearshaverangedfrom91in1998to148in2016.PresentaKonsin2018totaled132ofwhich37wereposters.
Wehavehadseveralsignificantaccomplishmentsinthelastyearorso.PeanutSciencebecameanOpenAccessJournal(removedmembershiprequirementtoaccessPeanutScience)starKngonJuly1,2017.ThegoalwastoestablishanimpactfactorbyexpandingourviewershipandcitaKons,reducethecostofpublicaKontoincreasesubmissions,whileatthesameKmekeepingthesamehighstandardsofpublicaKon.AtthismeeKng,wehadarecordnumberofstudents(25)parKcipateinthegraduatestudentcompeKKons,includingtheinauguralGraduateStudentPosterContest(7).Alsonewin2018wasthecreaKonofanAmericanPeanutResearchandEducaKonSocietyGraduateStudentOrganizaKon(APRESGSO).ThisorganizaKonwillhelpimprovenetworkingamongstudentsacrossuniversiKes,createanenvironmenttoallowgraduatestudentstoplayamoreacKveroleinmeeKngplanning,includingtheputngtogetheragraduatestudentsymposium/luncheonattheannualmeeKng,haveaseatatthetableoftheAPRESBODfordirectinvolvementontopicsrelatedtograduatestudents,andsimplyprovideaforumforprofessionalleadershipexperience.IthankSaraBethPelhamfortakingthefirstleadershiproleinorganizingtheluncheonthisyear,whichincludedapanelofscienKststalkingaboutcareerswiththeUSDA-ARS.WethankSyngentaforsponsoringthefirstGSOluncheonin2018andIwouldliketothankalloftheothermeeKngsponsorsfortheirconKnuedsupportofthisorganizaKon.
Inclosing,thankyouforthehonorandprivilegeofbeingyourpresidentduringthis50thAnniversarycelebraKon.IhavebeenamemberofAPRESsince1997andamthankfulforthemanyworkrelaKonshipsandfriendshipsthathavecomebecauseofthisorganizaKon.ThereissKllacriKcalneedtodevelopcreaKve,science-basedpeanutresearchasitwas50yearsago.ThereisanequallyimportantcriKcalneedtofocusoneffecKveandwell-arKculatedcommunicaKonaboutourscience.Wecan’tbeafraidtochallengethecurrentwayofthinking.Weareveryfortunatetodowhatwedo,andweneedtoresonatethisfortuneandbe“passionate”ineverythingwedo.Ichallengeyouto“getinvolved”andsay“yes”whencalled.APRESneedsyouaswecreateournext50yearsofmemories!ThishasbeenatremendousmeeKng,whichstartedwiththeFifeandDrum,includedavisitfromMr.PeanutandtheNUTmobile,involvedthefirstgraduatestudentpostercontest,andinvolvedthecreaKonofanAPRESGraduateStudentOrganizaKon.FormylastdutyasAPRESPresident,IaskDr.CharlesSimpsonandhiswifeLynAnnetocutour50thAnniversarypeanutbuaercake.IwishyouallsafetravelshomeandIlookforwardtoseeingyouinAuburn,ALin2019.

Dr. Tim Grey announced the winners for this year’s Corteva Agriscience, a division of DowDuPont,AwardforExcellenceinResearch,whowillreceiveaplaquecommemoraKngthehonoranda$1,000check. He concludedhis remarkswith thanks toCortevaAgriScienceforthesupportoftheseimportantawards.

Dr.BarryTillman,peanutbreederandAssociateProfessorofAgronomyattheUniversityofFlorida,NorthFloridaAgriculturalResearchandEducaKonCenter,hasanoutstandingresearchrecord.HisprogramemphasizesdevelopingpeanutculKvarswithmulKplepathogenresistance,improvedseedquality,andimprovedoilchemistryofpeanutkernels.HehasmadesignificantcontribuKonsthroughresearchonmethodsforplantbreeding,geneKccontrolofthecharacterisKcsofinterest,geneKcandstoragefactorsthataffectseedgerminaKon,anduKlizaKonofparKalresistancetooneormorepathogensinintegrateddiseasemanagementprograms.HisproducKvityisindicatedbyhisreleaseoftwelvepeanutculKvarsfromhisprogram,onepatentedgermplasmlinewithhighresistancetotomatospoaedwiltvirus,hisauthorshipoftwobookchapters,46refereedjournalarKcles,andover80abstractsandproceedings.
SinceDr.TillmanbeganworkasanassistantprofessorattheUniversityofFlorida,hisresearchhasfocusedonimprovingpodyieldandgrade,majorareasoffocusinhisprogramasbreedingfordiseaseresistance,andimprovedseedqualityandoilchemistry.UFT113,alinehedevelopedwithDanGorbet,hasthehighestleveloffieldresistancetoTSWVavailableinculKvatedpeanut.Hisresearchontheeffectsofpeanutstorageonseedqualityischangingthewaybreedersselectgenotypes.
Dr.TillmanhelpsimprovetheefficiencyandproducKvityofthebreedingprocessusingstaKsKcalrelaKonshipsamongimportantcharacterisKcs,novelapplicaKonofnewequipment,geneKcmarkersandphenotypicinheritance.Dr.TillmanisakeyparKcipantintheinternaKonalpeanutgenomicseffort,especiallyineffortsrelatedtomappingandmarkerdevelopmentfordiseaseresistanceandoilchemistry.
Dr.TillmanisakeycollaboratorinmulKdisciplinaryresearchandextensioneffortsacrossmulKplestatesandmulKplecountries.Heisoneofthefewbreederswithextensionappointment,andinthiscapacityprovidesreal-worldinformaKononvarieKes,varietyselecKonandpracKcalaspectsofpeanutbreedingdirectlytoclienteleinFloridaandthesoutheast.ToassistpracKKonersandfarmers,hehasconductednumeroustestsonresearchstaKonsandinfarmers’fieldstoinsurethataccuratedataareavailabletohelpfarmersmakemoreinformedchoicesbetweennewandexisKngculKvarsbeneficialtotheiroperaKons.
BarryconKnuestobetheleaderinhigh-oleicvarieKesandhasworkedwithfacultyandproducersforseveralyearstopromotetheadopKonoftheselinesforcommercialuses.Hiseffortsconcentrateon

developmentofhigholeicculKvarsandmethodstorapidlytestfortheelevatedoleicfaayacidphenotype.HisgrouphasbeenabletorouKnelypredictfaayacidscontentofwholepeanutseedswiththeuseofnear-infraredreflectancespectroscopy(NIR),andpublishedthefirstpaperonthatmethodinpeanut.Asaresult,othermajorbreedingprogramsintheUnitedStatespurchasedspectroscopesforthesamepurpose.ThattechnologyisnowalsobeinguKlizedbyamajorpeanutshellingcompanyaspartoftheirqualitycontrolprocessforassuringpurityofthehigholeiccharacterisKcintheirincomingpeanuts.
Dr.TillmanhassignificantinternaKonalcomponentsofhisresearchprogram.HecollaboratesinbreedingeffortswiththePeanutCompanyofAustralia,andhasworkedextensivelywiththemonevaluaKonsoflinesfromhisprogramaswellasgermplasmdevelopedinAustralia.Inrecentyears,culKvarsfromTheUniversityofFloridahavebeenplantedonasmuchas70%oftheAustralianpeanutacreage.CollaboraKveworktherealsoexpandedtheuseoftheNIRtechnologytopredictanKoxidantcapacityofpeanutkernels.Eachyearheprovides10-20elitepeanutbreedinglinesfromhisprogram,whicharecarefullyselectedasbeingpotenKallyrelevanttotheAustralianindustry.
Inmostdevelopingcountries,controllingdiseaseswithpesKcidesisnoteconomicallyfeasibleevenwhenpesKcidesareavailable.Dr.TillmanalsoworkscloselywithpartnersinBoliviaandHaiKtoprovidegermplasmandbreedingexperKsetocombatissueswithyield,performanceanddiseaseresistance.Thisisespeciallyimportantgiventheissueswithpoorsoils,leafrustdiseaseandtheoveralladversegrowingcondiKonsoftheseverypoorcountries.
PossiblythemostpowerfulcomponentofDr.Tillman’sresearchprogramishisinnateskillatbeingaproacKve,supporKve,producKveanddedicatedcollaborator.Dr.TillmanapproachescollaboraKoninthetruespiritofteamwork.Heiswillingandabletoserveasateammemberaswellasateamleaderandseemstohavetherarewisdominhowtonavigatethatchoice.Asaresearchteamleader,Dr.TillmanprovidesatruescienKficvisionaryskillatsynthesizingexisKngresearch(oXenKmesfromquitediverseconceptareasandsources),idenKfyingelementsofknowledgethatarelackingornonexistent,andcraXingnovelandtransformaKveapproachesinscienKficresearchthatmakeimpac{ulandsignificantprogressintheareaofinquiry,suchasdevelopingculKvarswithimprovedrootarchitectures,droughttolerance,andmaturaKoncharacterisKcs.ThistalentisquiterareinmostcollaboratorsandprovidesarichandinvaluablegiXtohiscolleagues.Asateammember,Dr.Tillmanprovidestheutmostinserviceandsupport.WhilewesomeKmesjestaboutcolleaguesthatmaynotdeliveronpromisesregardingsharingoffiscalresources,personnelsupport,mentoringstudents,orfollowingthroughonresearchacKviKes,thesereallyarebarrierstoresearchprogress.Dr.TillmanistheulKmateanKthesisofthismodel–heisalwaysconsistentinfulfillinghispromisesandprovidingmeaningfulandsubstanKveintellectualsupporttohiscolleagues.HeconsistentlyandconscienKouslymentorsgraduatestudentsinresearchtraining,andpossessesauniquefocusforcompleKngresearchobjecKvesingeneral.
AtthenaKonallevel,Dr.TillmanisaFoundingMemberoftheNaKonalAssociaKonofPlantBreedersandisapastcurrentpresidentofthatsociety.HeisamemberoftheAmericanPeanutResearchandEducaKonSocietyholdingofficesasthechairofthesiteselecKoncommiaee,memberofthenominaKngcommiaeeandpublicrelaKonscommiaee,amemberofthesearchandscreencommiaeeforanexecuKveofficer,andamemberoftheBoardofDirectors.Clearly,Dr.TillmanhasbeenincrediblyacKveatthenaKonallevelwithinhisnaKonalsocieKesandhasbeenrecognizedbyhispeersforhisleadership.

AsDr.Ozias-AkinsresearchprogramatUGAgrewandbecamewidelyrenowned,sodidtheimportanceofpassingonthistechnologytothenextgeneraKon.ShewasselectedasUGA’sDirectoroftheInsKtuteofPlantBreeding,GeneKcs&Genomics(IPBGG)--agraduatetraininginsKtute(2012-Present);therecipientoftheCreaKveResearchMedal(2015);theD.W.BrooksDisKnguishedProfessorawardandwasrecentlyhonoredasaUGADisKnguishedResearchProfessor.
Dr.Ozias-Akinsconductsalargeresearchprogramthatisonthecutngedgeofscienceforcropimprovement.Sheisrecognizedworldwideforhermolecular,cellcultureandtransformaKonresearchwithmulKplecropspecies.ThisresearchhasgreatlyadvancedtheuseofmoderngeneKctechnologytoimprovepeanut.
ShefirstbeganresearchoninvitrocultureandmanipulaKonofpeanutin1986.ThisresultedinthefirstsignificantpaperonpeanutsomaKcembryogenesisthatwaspublishedin1989andhasbeencitedover100Kmesinsubsequentliterature.Whilethisworkwasfocusedonrescueofinter-specifichybridsusinginvitrotechniques,itbecameobviousthatthemethodsshehaddevelopedfortheiniKaKonandproliferaKonofsomaKcembryoscouldbeappliedinprotocolsforforeigngenetransfer.Thefirsttransgenicpeanutplantswereproducedinherlabusingmicro-projecKlebombardmentandhygromycinresistanceasaselectablemarker.Thegenetransferprotocol,publishedin1993,hasbeencitedover100Kmesandhasbeenadoptedbyseverallaboratoriesaroundtheworld.FormanyyearsitwastheonlyreproducibleprotocolthatwasapplicabletoawidevarietyofpeanutculKvars.

Morerecently,Dr.Ozias-Akinsdevelopedhighthroughputmolecularmarkersthatcanbeusedtoselectfornematoderesistanceandforhigholeicacidcontent.ShehasusedthesetechniquesinclosecooperaKonwiththeUSDA-ARSpeanutbreedingprograminTiXontodevelopTifNV-HighO/L,anematoderesistantculKvarwithhigholeicfaayacidcontent.
Throughoutthislongandillustriouscareer,Dr.Ozias-Akinshasmentored31post-docs,22visiKngscienKsts,13PhD,3MSstudentsasmajorprofessor;servedoncommiaeesof16PhD,8MSstudents.AdvisedundergraduatesforAgriscienceandEnvironmentalSystemsandBiologicalSciencesMajorsattheUGA-TiXonCampus.
HercommitmenttoeducaKngfutureresearchersandplantbreedersontheroleanduseoftechnologyinagriculturebeganin2002whenshedevelopedtheUGAundergraduatecourseAgriculturalBiotechnology—aclassshesKllteachestoday.
RecognizinganeedtodevelopagraduateleveltrainingprograminthemoleculargeneKcsandplantbreedingfield,PeggyledthedevelopmentofonewithintheIPBGG,whichnowhas30-40M.S.andPh.D.studentsatanyoneKme.ThisprogramspansdepartmentsandacKvelytrainsthenextgeneraKonofplantbreeders.Manyofthestudentsarenowleadersintheirownright.ThisisduetoheracKveinvolvementintheresearchandinthetrainingofstudents.Althoughnotaneasypathwhileinherlab,oncetheygraduatetheseareamongthebesttrainedscienKstsintheworld!GraduatesofIPBGGholdposiKonsatmostofthemajorseedcompanies,severaluniversiKes,andgovernment.
PeggyisaleaderineducaKonintheglobalpeanutcommunityforhereffortstotranslatethegenomicsworktoadvancesinculKvardevelopment.ThiseducaKonaloutreachincludestrainingbreedershowtousemarkersandgenomicsinformaKoneffecKvelytoadvancebreedingprograms.MostbreedersarealreadyusingmarkersdevelopedinPeggy’slabandthroughworkshopsattheAPRESmeeKngDr.Ozias-Akinsdeliversnewtoolsandtechnologiestoadvancetheuseofmarkersforplantbreeding.Suchtraining,bothformalandinformal,iscriKcalinbuildingcapacityintheUSanddevelopingcountriestoconductfutureresearch.PeggyhasalwaysbeenastrongadvocateforsuchtrainingworkingjointlywithInternaKonalCropsResearchinsKtuteforSemi-AridTropics(ICRISAT)inIndia,CERAASinSenegal,andothersandisalwayswillingtoacceptstudentsandvisiKngscienKsts.Iknowthatallthose,whohavetheopportunitytoworkwithandbetrainedbyher,benefitgreatly.ThesebenefitsinhumancapacitytranslateintobeaerresearchandulKmatelyimprovedagriculturalproducKonglobally.

ThishassavedAPRES$5-$10KinmeeKngexpenseseachyear.TheAPRESAnnual Meet ing i s organ ized by a largely,volunteerorganizaKonofpeople.CraigisalwaysveryacKvebehindthescenes,andhisgraspoftechnologyhasbeeninvaluabletothemeeKngorganizers,oXenstayingonsiteaXerothershavegonetobedordinnerwhilehepersonallysetsthingsuporsolvesproblems.Infact,manyofthethingsCraigdoesarehard todocumentorput intoacategory.
