In recent years the Government has repudiatedits contract with tax payers by increasing theState Pension age from 65 to 68 for men andfrom 60 to 68 for Women as follows:

The State Pension age for women born on orafter 6 April 1950 will increase gradually to 65between 2010 and 2020, so from 6 April 2020the State Pension age will be 65 for both menand women. Between 2024 and 2046 the StatePension age will increase for both men andwomen. This increase will be gradual, happeningover two years every decade.

The current proposed changes will mean that:

The State Pension age for men and women willincrease from 65 to 66 between April 2024 andApril 2026.The State Pension age for men andwomen will increase from 66 to 67 between April2034 and April 2036.The State Pension age formen and women will increase from 67 to 68between April 2044 and April 2046. And plansare already being discussed to increase the Stateretirement age to 70 and above.

These increases are required due to the fact thatthe State Pension scheme is unaffordable. TheUK worker/pensioner ratio was 2.3 nationalinsurance contributors per pensioner in 1985 andis forecast to have fallen to 1.6 contributors perpensioner in 2025.

In recent years Bernie Madoff made headlinesdefrauding investors via his Ponzi investmentscheme. Ponzi finance schemes use money fromnew investors to pay off earlier investors until notenough new recruits can be found and the wholescheme collapses, with the newest investorslosing everything. The State Pension is paid toretirees by current national insurancecontributors. In my opinion the State Pensionscheme is in the process of failing and it maywell be wise for people to take appropriate stepsso that they are not reliant on it.

It is thought that this year willsee charities experience a 30%reduction in donations frombusinesses and individuals.

With this significant reductionin their income, charities mustreview their income andexpenditure to ensure they cancontinue their essential workThings to consider are asfollows;

1 – Have a detailed look atyour current and projectedincome to identify where youbelieve you may have areduction.

2 – If you have businessdonations speak to thebusinesses as soon aspossible to identify whetherthey will be able to supportyou in the future.

3 – If a company can no longerprovide a donation, would theybe willing to provide a free ordiscounted service to reduceyour costs?

4 – If you rely on fund raisingfrom individual donations andevents benchmark how othercharities are performing. This

could help you prepare for ananticipated reduction.

5 – Try and build up afundraising strategy that couldfocus on the following;

Project your fundraising for 2-3years.

Review areas to see if youmaximise certain areas, ie;events.

Be prepared to put inpotentially 2-3 times as mucheffort as in the past.

Do not overestimate funding asthis could seriously affect youwhen it doesn’t arrive.

6 – If you apply for grantfunding, consider partneringwith a similar organisation tostrengthen future bids.

7 – Challenge your costsregularly. If you normallyalways get printing from onecompany get 3 quotes to see ifyou can get it cheaper. Canyou share costs with otherorganisations to reduce theprice?

8 – Get professional advice.Banks, solicitors, accountants, business advisors andgovernment organisations area great source of advice andprofessional support.

The sooner you assess thepotential effect, the sooner youtake control and reduce it.

If you would like to discussways to improve your charitye-mail me on:[email protected] orcall me on 07723 096 240.

The Success Doncaster programme has manycontracts delivering a number of differentinitiatives, each one tailor made to meet yourown individual needs. This month we would liketo focus on Doncaster Motorcycles, a new startbusiness that has received assistance throughone of our strands - Enterprise Champions.

Neil Sawbridge and Kevin Hollingsworth wereboth employees of Cusworth Bikes until it wentinto administration at the end of November2009. With 27 years experience between them inthe motorcycle industry, they felt they wouldmake a good team working together to run theirown motorcycle business.

After approaching Success Doncaster, they werereferred to an Enterprise Champion for up todate help and support on a number of keyissues about starting a business.

Neil and Kevin received advice on marketing andwere also given advice on how to write abusiness plan. They were also advised on howto get a Success Doncaster grant to helptowards the cost of their new venture.

Neil said: “The support that Success Doncasterhas offered to me and Kevin has beenexceptional. Without it we would not be wherewe are now. It has been a challenge and anexperience making the move from employmentto self employment but one that is gratifying anddelivers its own rewards”.

Doncaster Motorcycles opened in January andboth Neil and Kevin hope it will be able to pickup where Cusworth Bikes has left a gap. Theyhave both turned down the offer of alternativeemployment to be able to make this venture areality and are ready to take on the challenge ofopening their own business and seeing it grow.

BUSINESS

Picture this: You open up the local newspaper or yourindustry’s leading trademagazine and what do you see- your competitor’s product orservice being covered. And ifyou’re thinking, “I want to getmy company in there”, youneed a quick checklist of howyou can get your press releasenoticed.

1. Struggling for ideas or apoint to start? Think of whatyou’ve done over the lastmonth or so. Any newclients, products or solutionscan make good stories.

2. Make sure the press releaseis well written. Don’t usesuperfluous terms.Journalists want to know thefacts in a succinct manner.

3. As a general rule of thumbstick to between 200-300words. Anything more andyour reader could zone-out.Remember, the objective isto grab the attention of theperson sifting throughhundreds of press releases.

4. Spell-check, spell-check,spell-check. It doesn’t give a very professional imagewhen a press release hasgrammatical errors orspelling mistakes.

5. Take a good photograph or invest in a photographer.Releases with pictures havea higher chance of beingpicked up by editors.

6. Spend some time building a good media list that isrelevant to your release. Forinstance, if you’re a kitchenmanufacturer, you might notwant to blanket every singlepublication but insteadconcentrate on your industrytitles.

7. All images should have agood print resolution and atleast 300dpi. The image sizeshould be no more than1MB. You don’t want toclog-up someone’s Inbox.

8. Don’t forget to check picturecaptions, names of peoplequoted in the release and

the release date. Do checkthe word count after anycopy changes.

9. Before emailing it out, ensure all the emailaddresses are in the Bccfield and it is addressed toyour internal email address.

10. Finally, check allattachments and paste therelease as inline text withinthe email. This is in casesome publications blockattachments.

Of course, there’s more to PRthan just a good press release, but it’s a very good place tostart.

What to do when.......

You spill something on yourlaptop:

Turn it off immediately.Take the battery out.Open it and turn it upsidedown to allow the liquid todrain out of the keyboard.Leave it in that position for atleast 3 days at roomtemperature.

However, the chances arebetter for a full recovery if itwas not a sticky drink. Forexample water usually doesless harm than wine or sugaredcoffee.

You drop your laptop:

If it was off, don’t switch it on,although you will be sorelytempted. Call Mat & Mouseand we can inspect it for you.If it was on, back up youressential data such asdocuments and photographs (if it will allow you to) beforeswitching it off.

Your laptop is more likely tosurvive if it was switched off atthe time. Therefore it isadvisable to not move yourlaptop around too much whenswitched on.

If your laptop or computersuddenly does not switch onany more, 9 times out of 10 wecan recover your data, documents and photographs. Please get in touch for details.

Replacement Laptop Screens

If your laptop has suffered anaccident and the screen hascracked or the image looks likea drunken spider has weaved a web across it, you willprobably need your screenreplacing. This is a costeffective way to save yourlaptop from the rubbish heap.

If your laptop screen hasbecome too dark to see, thenagain you will need areplacement. The best way todiagnose this is to shine atorch on the screen and look if you can see the image faintlyshowing in the torch light.

Another good test to make (if you have access to adesktop computer) is to attachyour laptop to an externalscreen. If the image is fine onthe other screen, then you needto have your laptop screenreplaced.

Bulbs are now racing to catchup and everything is ‘springinginto life’. Fortunately people aregetting out into their gardensand cutting their grass for thefirst time in 2010. The weekendsare now full of people cuttingthis and chopping that andpreparing their gardens for theGreat British Summer. Listenquietly on a Saturday andSunday afternoon for the lowhum of Lawnmowers....

The weather since Christmashas been the coldest for a longtime and although the cold haskilled off many nasty bugs andairborne diseases it haspresented us with a few issuesthat we have not seen for sometime.

Frost, Snow, Cold WindFor the past 3 months we havehad extreme cold conditions forDoncaster. Many of the tenderherbaceous perennials such asPenstemons have taken abattering, as well as tendershrubs such as Fuchsias. Eventhe shrubs that are consideredto be ‘hardy’ have sufferedrecently. Choisyas, Hebes, andeven Bamboos have struggleddue to the combination ofsnow, frost and periods of coldwind. Branches of trees havesnapped off, plants previously

attached to fences or trellishave become unfastened andtrees or shrubs planted towardsthe end of 2009 may have hadtheir roots disturbed due to thefrost.

My advice is to get out into thegarden. Take stock of yourplants and have a quick lookaround to see what looks sickly.Plants like people show signs ofstress when they are unwell. Weget coldsores and spots, and sodo plants (well spots anyway!).Pay special attention to anyshrubs that are not showing anynew buds. Although we are afew weeks behind with plantsbudding you can do a little test.

Take a small knife or one ofyour keys and scrape a smallsection of the branch or woodystem. Try it near the base of theplant. If it shows green the plantis ok. If you scrape it and it isjust dry and brown then itsprobably too late! Also look outfor any shrubs that havecrinkled, crumpled or distortedleaves. This has been causedby long periods of cold wherethe water contained within theplant’s leaves has been frozenand defrosted causing thedistortion. If it looks particularlyunattractive then cut back theoffending growth. If you leave it

eventually the new growth willcause the old growth to witherand drop off.

Snow MouldJust got a bit more space to tellyou about something that I’venot seen for a while and that’sSnow Mould. If you have smallbrown patches on your lawnthat look a little like dog weepatches (but you haven’t got adog) then that’s probably SnowMould. It’s a group of fungaldiseases that turn the grassbrown in patches after aprolonged cold and wet spell.

It looks unsightly but with a bitof work you can get it undercontrol. Give it a light rakingwith a Spring Tine Rake toremove the dead grass andmoss. Spike it with a GardenFork and if it’s really bare youcan spread some multi purposecompost or sand mixed withsome lawn seed to help it onit’s way.

If you require any informationon my article this month or youneed a free garden health checkplease contact me on: 07889 858767 or 01302 865075.

Hopefully this can signal the end of the need forheating for a while.

Remember to reset all your time controls(hopefully you have adjusted them for B.S.T.)and knock down the room stat a little.

As we move into summer you need to thinkabout any repairs or upgrades you might want todo before autumn.

This is the best time to make those plans. Haveyou had a radiator with a small leak or a TRVthat doesn’t seem to work as it should?

Don’t leave these jobs until you need the systemat the end of the year.

You should adopt a systematic approach tomaintaining your heating. Check for leaks, flushout the system if required and make sure thecleaning and rust inhibiting chemicals are ok.Boiler flue gas analysis can give a good guide asto the condition of the boiler and whether or nota service is required.

As a final safeguard you should run your heatingso the pump gets used once or twice a month(just for ten minutes or so) to ensure the pumpdoes not seize during its shutdown period.

On your Hot and Cold system check for drippingtaps, toilet cisterns that don’t shut of fully or areconstantly running small amounts of water intothe pan. All these things will add up andincrease your water bill.

If you are really up for saving you could install awater butt to collect rainwater for the garden oreven install a small rainwater harvesting systemto collect rainwater that can be used for flushingtoilets, laundry or cleaning the car.

On the financial front there are big changescoming into force this month.

The Boiler scrappage scheme is now gone.Hopefully you have taken advantage if youcould.

The “Feed In” tariffs’ (FIT’s) for the privategeneration of electricity are now in place makingphotovoltaic cells and the like a much moreviable proposition with payback down to aroundten years from twenty.

We have more information about the RenewableHeat Incentive (RHI) which is a similar schemeapplied to things like solar thermal panels for hotwater, heat pumps, biomass boiler plant and thelike.

The RHI scheme will be up and running by April2011 but any projects completed after July 2009will qualify for payment under the scheme.

For business the Carbon Trust interest free loansare still available though the criteria for the loanwill change on 12th April. Loans will be availablefrom £3,000 to £100,000 for many types ofenergy saving schemes. The target saving willbe 2 tonnes of CO2 for every £1,000 of the loanwith payback periods of up to four years.

Do what you can – your grandchildren’s worldneeds you !

If you need any help or advice give us a call ordrop a quick email [email protected] will be happy to help where we can.

It looks like spring is finally upon us, Easter as hasbeen and gone in a somewhat damp fashion.

The daffodils are at last deciding to show their headsand the grass is looking ready for that makeover.

Spring is in the air...

1. Adopt the “habit” mindset instead of the“diet” mindset

The first step towards losing fat permanently hasmore to do with your mindset than it does withnutrition or exercise. You have to change yourentire attitude about nutrition and exercise.Instead of adopting the mindset of short-term“diets,” you must adopt the mindset of lifelong“habits.”

2. Keep your muscle at all costs The critical factor in turning your body into a“fat-burning machine” is to build and maintainas much lean body mass as possible. Muscle isyour fat-burning secret weapon! Muscle is yourmetabolic furnace. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even at rest.

3. Use a small calorie deficit. To lose body fat, you must be in negative caloriebalance (a calorie deficit). You can create acalorie deficit by increasing activity, bydecreasing calories or with a combination ofboth. The most efficient approach to fat loss isto decrease your calories a little and increaseyour activity a lot.

4. Use exercise to burn the fat rather than dietsto starve the fat

To lose body fat, there must be a calorie deficitand there is more than one way to create acalorie deficit. One way is to decrease yourcalorie intake from food. The other is toincrease the amount of calories you burn thoughexercise. Of the two ways to create a caloriedeficit, burning the calories is the superior

5. Determine your minimal calorie requirementsand never drop below them – ever! One way to ensure that you never go intostarvation mode is to determine the minimumamount of calories you can eat without slowingyour metabolism. Then, use that as your rockbottom calorie number.

6. Eat more frequently and never skip meals Grazing is better for you than gorging. The bodyinterprets missed meals as starvation. By eatingsmaller portions more frequently, you’ll be ableto eat more food than you’ve ever eaten beforewithout being deprived or starving yourself.

7. Don’t stay in a negative calorie balance long When fat loss stops or begins to slow downafter being in a substantial calorie deficit, mostpeople panic and cut their calories even further.Sometimes this works and it breaks the plateau.More often than not, it digs you into an evendeeper metabolic rut. The best thing you can dois to raise your calories for a few days orsometimes even for a few weeks and then returnto a calorie deficit to re-ignite the fat-burningprogress.

8. Make your goal to lose body-fat slowly at arate of 1-2 lbs. per week. The best way to lose fat permanently withoutmuscle loss is to lose weight slowly with a focuson exercise rather than severe calorie cutting.

On a final note my advice is; be patient. Don’t ever confuse weight loss with fat loss andremember that the 8 strategies you have justread are pure ‘fact’! If you want to get startedand need more help please feel free to get intouch for an informal chat and we can discussyour requirements further.

To try and forecast a month ahead forecastershave to use what we call ‘teleconnections’ to getan idea of the most likely weather that far ahead. Our weather is affected by what happens aroundthe equator and tropics with indicators of whatthe Pacific and Indian Oceans are showing.

Terms like La Nina and El Nino may be familiarto you? This in turn can set up weatherindicators further north over the northernhemisphere into the north Atlantic and higherlatitudes. In a seasonal way they can give someindications several months ahead, for example,of the type of hurricane season, more or lessthan usual, or will Winter be colder or milderthan normal.

As an aside this year some forecast centres arepredicting a higher than average number sosomething to remember if you are planning tovisit the south eastern parts of USA and theCaribbean from mid-Summer onwards?

Looking at the various bits and pieces ofinformation that MAY help peer through the fogof long range forecasting and its not showingmuch signs yet of any heat wave!

The reverse really, with every indication that weare likely to see air that has originated from apoint north of the country rather than south of it,perhaps for 50% of the time. The breeze fromthat northerly direction, anywhere between west

through north into the north east could beenough to upset hair do’s now and again butmostly light to moderate in strength. Even frostis likely to feature now and then so bewarebeing too enticed by those displays in gardencentres, pop them in a greenhouse for a littlewhile longer.

As to precipitation then anyone wanting to seesnow is likely to have to get further north thanhere but the Scottish ski resorts seem set toenjoy a late season this year.

Rainfall in the local area is probably going to bearound average or even a touch below for theperiod quoted. Don’t despair though sunshinewill be there on many days and on the 30-40%of the time the air comes from a southerly pointthen temperatures climbing almost into thewarm category.

So all in all a pretty usual and rather mixed bagwith the odds slightly favouring temperaturesspending more time below than above normalfor late April and early May.

Ta-ra, I will try again with the next issue, and inthe meantime please do visit my web site for ashorter range forecasts issued on Monday andThursday each week.
