IMPLEMENTING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (EQ) AT WORK – EXGEN 5406

Have you ever wondered why some people succeed while others, equally intelligent, fail? Or, why some people seem to have so much empathy and self-awareness while others bumble along in an interpersonal ‘fog’? What is emotional intelligence and why does it matter? EQ styles play a very important role in daily workplace interactions such as learning how to respond to criticism, how to deal with diversity, understanding the need for tolerance with certain behaviors or situations or how to motivate ourselves and others. According to many experts, Emotional Intelligence (EQ) may be more important than IQ in determining success, both on the job and in personal life.

LEADING SUSTAINABILITY AT WORK – EXCPE 5441

The core skills of perspective taking, facilitation, coalition building, planning and implementing, are applicable to any home or workplace. With lots of open discussion, you will have the opportunity to learn from and share your own knowledge with others. You will complete a sustainability project as well as practice talking with one–three people (or in the larger group) by giving a mini-presentation.

MANAGING ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE – EXCPE 5439

This course examines the change process and tools and techniques to manage organizational change. Through reflection on past experience, you will examine key concepts of change and how to utilize a structures method to approach, plan, and sustain a change program. This course is part of the Change Management Workshop Series.

MENTAL TOUGHNESS: TRAINING FOR SUCCESS – EXGEN 5372

It has become common knowledge that highly successful people are different in their thinking and behavior than other people. But what are the unseen, often unknown mental toughness practices of these individuals? Mental toughness is a set of practices that enables you to master yourself mentally and emotionally. This seminar has one main objective: to teach you how to become your own success coach so you can get the results you want in your job and your life. Specifically, it will teach you the practices of mental toughness so you can overcome fear, take action, and create confidence for yourself in the face of any challenge.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS – EXCPE 5427

Project Management is a skill sought by employers in both the private and public sector and is in high demand. This two-day seminar is designed to provide the learner with the fundamental approach in planning and monitoring a project throughout the project life cycle. Utilizing a real-life case study, project scope, cost and time management will be combined with a core set of project management principles and foundational skills. This course is part of the Project Management Workshop Series.

This course is part of the Project Management Workshop Series.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: RISK AND RESOURCING – EXCPE 5443

Risk management and resource planning (maybe remove the phrase “in project management”) are key elements in the successful completion of a project. The processes and activities necessary to manage risk, a detailed understanding of the increased importance of project procurement, and the core concepts, as well as tools and practices, to be employed for effective project human resource management will be studied in this two-day seminar. Using an applicable case study, the concepts learned in the classroom can be immediately applied to your real-life project. This course is part of the Project Management Workshop Series.

STRATEGIC PLANNING – EXGEN 5428

Strategy is more important than ever before in our highly competitive world. Whether a high-tech software organization, a health care organization, a government-funded non-profit company, or a publicly traded multi–national conglomerate, strategy is key to setting the plan to be successful. Strategic planning allows an organization to set up a plan to achieve its objectives. Developing strategies often requires individuals to think creatively. Learn the elements of strategic planning to position your organization to be more effective in achieving its stakeholder’s goals.

National Advanced Certificate in Local Authority Administration

The Faculty of Extension has a long history

of continuing education in local government

administration. Courses on governance and

public administration have been offered

continuously since the late 1930s, with the first

certificate in local government being available in

the mid-60s. Since then, the National Advanced

Certificate in Local Authority Administration

(NACLAA) programs have evolved to their

current form, with two distinct certificates.

NACLAA Level I and NACLAA Level II are award-winning programs that are open to students from across Canada. Our courses are developed and delivered by academics and practitioners from all corners of the country who are experts in their field. NACLAA programs focus on the concepts, structures, and processes that define local government administration. They identify and analyze community issues relevant to Canadian municipalities, and foster students’ development of the theoretical and practical knowledge that are essential for success working in local authority administration.

PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS

Completion of both NACLAA Level I and NACLAA Level II fulfills the educational requirements for the Certified Local Government Manager (CLGM) designation in Alberta. The CLGM is conferred by the Society of Local Government Managers (SLGM), the organization that regulates the practices of local government managers and ensures its members act in the local government’s best possible interest.

Other certification requirements for the CLGM designation include at least five years of experience in local government management in Canada, belief in and practice of the SLGM’s Code of Ethics, and membership in the SLGM. For more information on the CLGM/SLGM, visit www.clgm.net.

efficient work units, the supervisor as a trainer,

and new trends in labour and management.
