Customer service drives Symons TireServing the customer isn’t just a term

tossed around at Symons Tire Service — it's the main value that guides the

family-run business.Service and integrity have always been at

the core of the Symons Tire business plan, and after 37 years, it remains as true aswhen Larry and one other employee opened the shop in 1973.And no business can remain at the well-

respected position in which Symons fi nds itself without placing the customer's needstruly top-of-mind. This second generationbusiness has survived and thrived through the decades by adhering to this mantra and ensuring clients get the proper product for the appropriate application all at a price withwhich they are comfortable. When you visit Symons Tire, which prides it-

self on professionally and honestly serving allmembers of your family, you can be sure youwill be looked after, and everything will bedone to ensure you’re pleased with the work. The business has been rewarded for its

efforts with generations of families bringing their vehicles to the shop, and helping thebusiness to grow from its humble beginnings. In 1975, Symons moved to its present loca-

tion, acquired adjacent property and began to

increase the facility.Alignment bays were added, and in 1980

the six-bay brake and muffl er shop wasbuilt, which continues to operate as a MinuteMuffl er and Brake franchise, bringing the total number of service bays to 12. This expan-sion helped the business offer more thanbefore, while still carrying tires for everything from cars to large transport trucks and farmvehicles.Customers can choose from a full range

of services including, brakes, muffl ers andexhaust systems, alignments, front-end and suspension work, tune-ups and general auto-motive repairs. The business has also further grown and started to specialize in mag wheel/tire packages, along with performance exhaust systems.Although evolving with the times, son Jason

manages the business with the same focus on Symons’ core values clearly in mind: customer service, integrity, developing a pro-fessional, competent staff, all while offeringtop-quality products.Symons Tire Service is the place where you

can put your vehicle in knowledgeable hands, and know you can trust their diagnosis, recommendations and repairs.

Jason Symons and the staff at Symons Tire emphasize customer service, in a store that has been in business in Mission for close to 40 years.

Swing Optical helps you look your best

For 28 years, Swing Optical has been helping Mission residents look sharp and see clearly.

Satti Grewal bought the business in 2006 and continues to provide the excellent ser-vice established by its previous owners.“We offer the same type of excellent

customer care and service for which the business is famous,” Satti said, noting Swing has been recognized as the best optical store in Mission for the past 15 years. And now a second Swing Optical store,

offering the same great service and care, has been opened in Maple Ridge this past March to help residents west of Mission with their eyewear needs. Swing offers full optical services, from

contact lenses to sight testing and on-site lab, with some lens work taking less than an hour to complete.

A sight test is a non-invasive procedure done by computer which determines if you need eyeglasses. The test is per-formed by trained opticians who are government certifi ed. Clients qualify for a sight test if they are

between 19 and 64 years old, and have had an eye exam within the past three to fi ve years. And if you’re looking for the hottest

brand name frames and the latest styles,Swing can defi nitely get you looking your best with products from Versace, D&G,Fendi and Gucci. And as always, kids’ frames come in a

variety of bold and fun colours. The key to the store’s success is helping

each customer fi nd that perfect pair of eye wear, according to Satti.“We don’t compromise on quality of

service. We use quality coating lenses because we have a reputation we want to uphold,” said Satti, who along with hisassociate Adrienne Grant, has many yearsof optician experience to help you.Satti is also involved in the community

through the Downtown Business Associa-tion and is on the board of directors for the Mission Chamber of Commerce.

broad range of students at Riverside. Thereare high-school aged students taking entry-level trades programs, adults who go back to school to achieve their career goals andthere is the transitions program, for "thoseunder 19 who need a different setting than ahigh school to meet their needs."Anderson just completed her fi rst school

year as principal at Riverside."It's a really impressive facility. The profi le

from Dewdney Trunk Road is very small, andyou don't realize how big it is," she said."You've got to come through the door to see

what Riverside has to offer. It's a top-northfacility, our instructors are excellent and wehave new and beautiful equipment."There are a couple of points she wants to

make for students considering Riverside.

Firstly, they should know that students un-der 19 receive free tuition, because of the provincial government's commitment to educating young people."The same program that would cost $8,000

as an adult only costs a few hundred dollars for students under age 19," Anderson ex-plained.That has important ramifi cations for stu-

dents who want to take a break for a yearafter they graduate high school. Financially, she recommends they get straight into a program."That could be an expensive year off."Secondly, Anderson is also the principal of

the Summit Learning Centre, which offers online school courses for kindergarteners through to high school students. She wants high school students in particu-

lar to be aware of the opportunities they have through taking online courses. Taking an online course allows students to customize their high school program, opening up elec-tive course options at their home school. An online course through Summit can free

up a spot on a student's course calendarfor a different high school course that they want or require. That's a win for all concerned.

An effective voice for local businesses

Businesses are recogniz-ing the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is an

effective voice for them and a leader in networking opportunities.Membership to the organization

has quadrupled over the past six years because the benefi ts are obvi-ous, says Chamber President Cal Crawford, who has been an activemember for 23 years. The organization coordinates

monthly social luncheons for members and regularly provides topical speakers on issues like sales and marketing, social media, and government-related matters. The chamber also has vital

partnerships with other community organizations, such as the District

of Mission and Community Futures North Fraser. The chamber and the district jointly host annual meetings

with developers and a picnic in thepark to discuss upcoming growth inMission.

Working with Community FuturesNorth Fraser, the chamber provides educational seminars to meet small

business needs. This year the chamber published

the fi rst edition of the Mission Handbook, an important tool to helpmajor, out-of-town contractors fi nd local services, trades and busi-nesses they might need to completetheir project.Mission is the only municipality

that has organized this kind of infor-mation in an easy-to-use document. We also host important networking

events with these contractors as they come into our community to dobusiness, added Crawford. The chamber also has a new

on-line presence with an enhancedbusiness directory, giving membersa venue to post their sales and employment opportunities, and an on-line forum for members to discuss issues and share expertiseand experiences.“The chamber values its role as

the voice of local business and willcontinue to advocate to mitigate thechallenges facing local business,”said Crawford.

Small business drives B.C.'s economyThe provincial Lib-

eral government has worked hard to create

an ongoing climate in BritishColumbia where businessescan prosper.“We recognize the im-

portance of business, and particularly small business,”said Marc Dalton, MLAfor Maple Ridge-Mission.“That’s what we feel gener-ates jobs and prosperity.”While some governments

would increase tax rates totry to fi ll their coffers, theLiberals believe that in havingbusinesses achieve fi nancialsuccess, there will actu-ally be more public revenuegenerated, even though tax rates are kept low."My goal as an MLA and our

goal as government, is to seeour province prosper. As agovernment, we want smallbusinesses to be profi table, because when that happens,

they can expand, hire morepeople, and allow owners and employees to make a decent living," said Dalton.

The BC Liberal governmenthas reduced small busi-ness taxes to 2.5 per cent, one of the lowest in North

America, and it has raised the threshold from $200,000 to $500,000.The new Harmonized Sales

Tax will ultimately result inan estimated $2 billion insavings for business, saidDalton.“In general, the HST will be

a really good move for busi-nesses.”Abbotsford-Mission MLA

Randy Hawes agreed, notingthat the business leaders inthis province are supportive of the HST."Every leading economist

states that the HST is themost effi cient and fairest tax that assists businesses andhelps build and sustain our economy. The HST combined with our very competitive income tax rates, both cor-porate and personal, make B.C. a leader in Canada in building small business con-fi dence," said Hawes. "That confi dence translates into investment which provides jobs, and those jobs are what sustains families."

Hawes understands busi-ness. Before he was thethree-term mayor of Mission,he was a bank manager andreal estate developer. He said businesses in the

Fraser Valley are forced to compete with rivals in other provinces and even other countries, and they can’t beat a tax disadvantage.Hawes said his party ap-

preciates the risks taken byentrepreneurs, and knowshow important their invest-ment is to the economy.“I really believe we have

to respect the people who take money out of their own savings, and take a chance to start a business,” saidHawes."We owe it to them to

ensure we have the most competitive tax climate, the least job-killing bureaucracy, and the highest performing economy possible."

Matus, are sleep experts andthe store carries only quality products, from mattresses topillows and an assortment ofbedding needs. The Sleep Experience corner

is inviting and calm — theperfect setting for a good rest. There is a range of mat-tresses to choose from, suchas memory foam, wool and latex.Memory foam is both tem-

perature and weight sensitive, relieving the body of stressand strain during the night.Wool is temperature regulat-

ing, which creates a drysleeping environment for ev-eryone. Studies have shown those sleeping on woolreduces tossing and turning

by up to 75 per cent.Whether you prefer a fi rm

or plush mattress, there is a latex mattress to suit your needs.Latex, says Shelly, is

newer to the North American

market, but is a constant in Europe. We usually change our mat-

tresses every fi ve to 10 years, but with a latex one, it doesn’t need to be replaced for up to20 years. It also doesn’t need

to be fl ipped or turned.Latex beds give your body

optimum orthopedic support, keeping the spine in its mostnatural and comfortable posi-tion. Air also passes through it easily and keeps away any

moisture. Latex is a natural product

and is better for people with allergies, explained Shelly. It isantibacterial and hypoallergen-ic. Even those who are allergicto latex can be comfortable on it because you’re not sleeping directly on latex. It’s a great investment. The Sleep Experience is just

Downtown a great place for shoppingDowntown Mission is attract-

ing some unique busi-nesses, making it a desirable

place to visit and shop.Shoppers come from Vancouver

and all over the Lower Mainland for the selection of designer brands and unique blends of specialty products.Customer service is superior

because most of the shops are runby owners, who have extensive experience in the industry and knowwhat shoppers need.Mission is the gem of the Fraser

Valley and the downtown plays a vital role. The Mission Downtown Business Association (DBA) always looks ahead and tries to make theshopping experience here a little more interesting each time. The downtown is also still proving

to be a viable place to do business,as occupancy numbers are increas-ing, said DBA president LyndonBalisky. A new restaurant, DakotaJoes, is opening in the former Sta-sia's site, while MTF Price Matters is taking up residence in the former Sears building.

"The downtown has all the advan-tages of a mall, with the same com-pactness, but it's always a lower cost per square foot" for merchants,he said. The face of Mission is changing,

and in anticipation of future growthin the community, the DBA is fi nd-ing ways to bring in new businessand stores. Mission’s downtownmerchants have become more sophisticated about marketing, andhired a professional fi rm, which em-phasized the residential and social component of the area, alongsidethe business community. The recently elected DBA board of

directors is working hard to organize events sure to attract new andreturning customers to the historicarea, said Balisky. One of the sure standouts for the

summer calendar will be a street festival held in conjunction with theRockin' River Music Fest, happening Aug. 12-13.For more information, visit down-

townmission.ca or call 604-814-2022.

Lyndon Balisky, DBA president, said Mission's downtown merchants are planning some events this summer todraw the public to First Avenue, including a car show and a festival held in conjunction with the Rockin' River Music Fest.

service industry, Ted has nurtured inhis staff a real caring and personalapproach for the customer.“It is not unusual to come into the

restaurant and see customers chat-ting with staff about their family andlife moments as some have been en-joying our pizzas for so many years that we really do feel like we know them,” said Ted. “My staff consider some customers as friends and take a genuine interest in them.”The quality of product, customer

care, and attention to detail com-bine to show that Pete’s goes aboveand beyond to make sure they aresuccessful.Pete’s Place and Ted are proud to

best pizza in town, and I believethat it is because of the care we putinto everything we do,” said Ted. “We make our own sauces, prepare our own fresh dough, dice our ownonions, and chop our own peppers. tool to help you get the job done.Whether you need a chainsaw and a chip-

per-shredder, or just a hatchet and gloves, the experts here can help. You will fi nd top brands of outdoor power

equipment, such as Stihl and Husqvarna. The staff at Prospect Equipment will guide

you in the right direction and offer sound advice. With warm weather around the corner, you

might want to start thinking about cutting andmaintaining your lawn, said owner Pascal Deissner, who recommends mulching as an alternative to bagging your grass clippings. Not only is mulching easier, it is better for

the roots and for water retention.Cut only one-third of the height of the grass

and keep it around three inches high. This gives clippings a place to hide.A sharp blade will allow grass to be cut up

fi ner and it’s better for mulching.Prospect Equipment has a full complement

of replacement blades, belts and parts thatare always in stock, as well as other tools toenhance your lawn and home, such as trim-mers, riding mowers, pressure washers andgenerators.Kombi tools offer different power heads and

attachments that can be used for variousjobs, including edging, hedge trimming, prun-ing, cultivating, etc.A revitalized showroom at Prospect Equip-

ment now offers a range of climbing gear from spurs to rope and harnesses. In addition to the equipment available at

700 Mission kids have benefitedArecent Vision Critical/Angus

Reid survey commissionedby Canadian Tire Jumpstart

Charities found that the number onereason children are not participatingin sports is cost. One-third (34 per cent) of Canadian parents surveyedreported price has been a barrier inenrolling their child in sports. Many kids in our community are missing out, but as a community, we can help!Canadian Tire Jumpstart is our sig-

nature program that helps fi nancially disadvantaged kids get involved inorganized sport and recreation activi-ties. The Canadian Tire Jumpstart program was developed in 2005 toaddress the ongoing need in com-munities to make physical activitya priority in the lives of Canadian children. Although national in scope, the program is local in focus. Your local Mission chapter is part-

nered by Mission Parks, Recreation & Culture, Big Brothers/Big Sisters,Mission Community Services and theMission Canadian Tire. Studies have shown that participa-

tion in organized sport and recreation increases a child’s chance for suc-

cess in life. They discover and par-ticipate. They gain self-confi dence. They develop self-esteem. They learn leadership skills. Their lives becomericher. This is the power of CanadianTire Jumpstart. All fundraising initiatives done locally

remain in the community to help kids

here. On May 28, 2011 at our annualJumpstart Day, due to the overwhelm-ing support we had from the Mission community, we raised $3,567 which will remain in the community. Withcorporate support, that number reached $10,701 for Jumpstart! Onthis day alone in Mission, we raised

enough money to help more than 85Mission kids "get in the game." “The response from the commu-

nity was amazing,” Canadian Tireowner, Vicki Gould said. “My mostmemorable moment of the day was talking with a young girl who was so excited to tell me all about her fi rstswim meet that she had been in thatmorning….. her mother told me shenever would have been able to jointhe swim club if it hadn’t been for Jumpstart. That really puts all we doin perspective.”Pamela Hilton utilized the program

for the fi rst time three years ago for swim lessons for her daughter, Meaghan, but didn't realized it couldapply to other activities until this past February when she saw a notice ather daughter's dance school. Now Meaghan dances up to six

days a week and she is grateful for the help. Pamela knows howimportant it is to keep kids active andencourages her daughter whenever she can. Meaghan, 11, says dancingis one of the most important thingsin her life now.Our goal is to use the funds raised

to provide as many Mission kids withthe opportunity to participate in sport and recreation activities on an annualbasis as we can. We get kids in the game by covering the costs of equip-ment and registration. Youth are benefi tting greatly, said

ball hockey coach Mike Van Egmond, noting players are improving their skills and interacting and developing relationships with professionals ."The Jumpstart program funded

hockey sticks and goalie equipmentfor the kids which has helped them be able to play hockey, which theyotherwise many not be able to af-ford," said Van Egmond.Since 2005, Canadian Tire Jump-

start in Mission has helped more than 724 kids in the community learn to swim, skate and participate inhealthy sporting activities. For more information on your local

Mission Chapter, please call Vicki Gould, the owner of the Mission Canadian Tire Store at 604-826-5840 (ext. 222) or Jason Roufosse, program coordinator pool, fi tness& marketing at the Mission Leisure Centre at 604-820-5350.

The Mission chapter of Canadian Tire's Jumpstart program is a partner-ship between four organizations, represented by (left to right) Amy Thain, Big Brothers/Big Sisters; Jason Roufosse and Mayor James Atebe, Districtof Mission's parks, recreation and culture department; Vicki Gould, Cana-dian Tire, and Phil Hope, Mission Community Services.
