It’s safe to say that the bourbon in-dustry has become an integral part ofKentucky’s economy. In conjunctionwith the Kentucky Book Festival, Com-merce Lexington’s next SPOTLIGHTSeries event presented by WealthSouthon Friday, November 15, from 8:00 -10:00 a.m. at the Venues of the GrandReserve (903 Manchester Street) willfeature three authors of books aboutbourbon.

The authors - Brian F. Haara, LindaRuffenach, and Blair Thomas Hess -will offer their unique perspectives on this specialspirit: from tasting it, to traveling for it, to writingabout it. Gathan Borden of VisitLex will serve as mod-erator.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:Brian F. Haara is a Louisville attorney who founda way to combine his passions for law, bourbon, and history. Linda Ruffenach is a businesswoman, entrepre-neur, and the founder of Whisky Chicks. She be-lieves that sharing a glass of bourbon and learningabout America’s native spirit are great common de-nominators to bring people together. The Leadership Central Kentucky program kickedoff its 20th year in August with a two-day retreat heldin Woodford County. The 2019–2020 class is com-prised of 25 emerging leaders who work in a varietyof disciplines and roles, and are from throughout theeight-county region - Bourbon, Clark, Fayette,Franklin, Jessamine, Madison, Scott, and Woodfordcounties - that is the focus of the program. The classwill visit each of the counties over the course of theprogram during day-long excursions to learn aboutkey industries, meet with local leaders, and contributeto an ongoing discussion about opportunities andchallenges within Central Kentucky.

During the two-day retreat, the class participatedin leadership challenges and team-building exercises;discussed various aspects of leadership and of per-sonality styles and conflict resolution; as well as whatis meant by “regionalism.” The group also enjoyed anevening out with a banquet hosted at Versailles Brew-

ing Co., along with stops at Spotz Gelato, Mrs. RogersPopcorn and Sweets Shoppe, Amsden Bourbon Bar,and Rolling Oven pizzeria in Versailles’ historic down-town district.

Working with horses at the Life Adventure Center,as well as an introduction to the enneagram systemof core personality types, were both new features ofthe program introduced this year. Both activitiesprompted enthusiastic and engaging discussionamong participants.

Dr. Virgil Grant, who has facilitated the retreat forseveral years, said the equine experience and the en-neagram assessment offered non-conventional op-portunities for participants to learn more aboutthemselves and others. “This is the unique character-istic of Leadership Central Kentucky,” he said. “Eachclass gets its own tailored experience due to the eightcounties involved.”

Recap by Charles Wilson, TatesCreek High SchoolThe first meeting for the Lexing-

ton Leadership Youth Programwas on September 4, and followingthis initial meeting, I believe thiswill be an amazing experience forall of the students. We began theday with an icebreaker game. Thisactivity allowed us to find connec-tions as we found people who hadcompleted certain activities on our bingo grid. As wefinished the game, we met our groups for the first time.

Very few of us knew what to expect as the UK ROTCentered the room. I will admit, I was a little worried thatwe were going to have to run and do sit ups. It provedto be an engaging experience to help us in team-build-ing. Following this activity, we had lunch. This gave us

more time to meet with the steer-ing committee members. We arelucky to have a group leaders whofind it valuable to help with theyouth program.

Next, Grace Gorrell conducteda mini UK leadership class. Wetook the color personality test. This was interesting to see whohad similar colors. Finally, wepicked our group names. There

were a lot of funny choices from Dance Moms to W.H.O.(we hate oranges). I believe this activity really helped thegroups to mingle and get to know each other better.

After the initial morning activity, we quickly began tobond and become a team. Overall, the orientation en-gaged and encouraged us that the year ahead will be fullof valuable experiences.

Discovering our city’s rich history and learning to bethoughtful and valuable citizens were the objectives ofLeadership Lexington’s first day session for the 2019-20program. To start the day, we welcomed Tyler Scott, Lex-ington Mayor Linda Gorton’s Chief of Staff, who pro-vided a rundown of the mayor’s key priorities for the Cityof Lexington, which include growing our workforce, de-veloping and supporting agriculture, making the TownBranch Commons a reality, and addressing the addic-tion epidemic. The class then had the opportunity to hear from Jason

Cummins, who currently serves as the Executive Asso-ciate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Experienceat the University of Kentucky. Jason emphasized to classmembers the importance of “owning your outcome” –being deliberate in developing your vision for your life.Jason’s focus on the need to impact others in order tobe successful left class members with a challenge:“When you come into this world, you cry while the restof the world rejoices. Live your life so that, when youleave this world, everyone cries while you rejoice.”

From Commerce Lexington, the group traveled tothe Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden to hear fromformer class members, David Cozart and Michael Kun-joo, about their class projects and tips to excel.

Then, it was on to the Lexington Public Library tohear from Heather Dieffenbach, the Director, and FosterOckerman, Jr., President and Chief Historian of the Lex-ington History Museum. As an added bonus, eachclass member received a copy of Foster’s book, “His-torical Lexington: Heart of the Bluegrass.” Mr. Ocker-man emphasized the importance of history, stating “if

you don’t know how you got there, you cannot make aninformed decision.”

One of the highlights of the day was our historicalbus tour of Lexington’s East End. Yvonne Giles, a localhistorian, led the tour, sharing with us her extensiveknowledge of the East End and its vibrant history.

The day ended at VisitLex, where class membersspoke with Julie Schickel, the organization’s Visitor Cen-ter Manager. Ms. Schickel and her team are taking greatstrides toward making Lexington a destination city andincreasing and developing the tourism industry here.

Leadership Lexington’s first day session set a solidframework for the rest of the year, allowing us to lookback on our city’s history and where we’ve been, yet alsogiving us a glimpse into the future and all that is tocome for Lexington.
