TAKING BETTER AIMEIT WOULD be impossible for AIMEto sneak past the eagle-eye ofthis columnist particularly sinceI have been a major critic of theshow in previous years To merelysay that this year AIME was animprovement on the 2015 showis to compare the living with thedead last yearrsquos show being anabsolute asco However it mustbe said that AIME this year wascertainly better organised

I must admit that my reservationsabout the educational sessionsbeing conducted in roomsconstructed on the show oorwere totally unfounded andindeed they were laid out in away which maximised audienceparticipation That these sessionswere also free attracted a lot more

people than in previous years Agreat plus for the show

The welcome function wasreintroduced this year butnobody could call it a networkingopportunity as it was promotedin the AIME literature The noiselevel was dangerously high andthe various rooms at 400 City Roadwere either in complete darknessor lit with a blinding white lightThe cost too was outrageous$15000 for a welcome receptionFor a sit-down gala dinner maybebut not for a buet style event

with minimum seating and evenless chance to actually networkhellipunless you fell over other people inthe dark (or the light)

There were some notableabsences this year No Marriottno Virgin no Qantas no Dubaino Emirates And almost everyother stand was smaller than inprevious years The reason mostorganisations give for not havinga presence at AIME this year is a

lack of ROI AIME is apparentlythe most expensive trade show inthe southern hemisphere (perhapsin the world) because it has twomasters MCB and Reed and bothwant their pound of esh If AIMEis to bring back the exhibitorsit has lost the MCB must vastlyreduce the amount it takes out ofthe show (after all other bureauxin Australia donrsquot have such anincome stream and still functionvery well if not better)

There are other trade showorganisers waiting in the wingsto bring a major worldwide tradeshow to this region it wouldbe a pity if AIME was to loseout because of the greed of itsorganisers

Worldwide trade shows mainly

held in the northern hemispherediscourage hosted buyers fromAustralia and New Zealand Iassume because of the cost oftravel and accommodation Thisis why Australia needs its ownworldwide show so buyers herecan discuss business face-to-facewith exhibitors from Europe theMiddle East the Americas in factall points of the compass Severalyears ago AIME actually achievedthis but not any more

If Reed canrsquot organise a worldwideshow and the MCB canrsquot stop its

money-grabbing then maybe theyshould move over and let someoneelse have a go
