The Beating Heart Of New Zealand

The Waikato region covers most of the central North Island of Aotearoa, New Zealand. It is the country’s fourth largest region and home to approximately 10 per cent of the population, with about 440,000 people calling the Waikato home. The Waikato is a place of powerful possibilities – a thriving economic area and a place rich in breath-taking natural wonders.

While it will be tempting to remain in the Waikato, the region is in close proximity to other activity hotspots, such as Rotorua, Taupo and Auckland. It’s the perfect base from which to explore the central North Island, with several highways passing through, and with an airport on the outskirts of Hamilton city.

“Hamilton & Waikato is an easily accessible destination from Auckland with a wealth of experiential assets for a business event and incentive programme. The wealth of expertise in the region covers a spectrum of industries, which all add potential for enhancing corporate and conference event programmes. With high-tech contemporary facilities, the region offers a broad focus on agriculture, medicine, science and technology, the arts, sporting excellence, cultural experience, glow worms, a tea plantation, motor racing and movie making. Worth your consideration.”

David Addison / Director of Strategic Development / Sane Event Group / Sydney

“The venue (Claudelands Conference & Exhibition Centre) is a great credit to the region and city. It surely reflects “cathedral” thinking by locals. It is surprisingly large and apparently easily adaptable and well looked after. Staff members are allowed to use their individual initiatives which translates into small touches I have yet to see in other venues.

The Novotel Tainui continues to be one of the most pleasurable places to stay in NZ.”

Nigel Coventry / Inside Tourism / NZ

“What a great destination – with modern state-of-the-art conference venues within walking distance, dining and entertainment opportunities on your door step and a plethora of opportunities from the leisurely stroll amongst the Hamilton Gardens to the adrenalin-filled Black Water Rafting at Waitomo; as a conference destination Waikato and Hamilton has it all.”

Georgina Torrington / Sales Manager / Continental Catering Delegate, 2016 CINZ Conference

“I’ve come away with a completely overhauled impression of Hamilton. I’m impressed! I would now, for example, really go all out to promote pre-and-post for Auckland (and Wellington) international conferences, to drive or fly to Hamilton to include an overnight stay to see the Hamilton Gardens and dinner at Hobbiton Movie Set- then on to Rotorua for a night. These two places are truly unique. The dinner was probably the best conference dinner experience I’ve had. Hamilton is now firmly in my radar as a destination. Claudelands is a fantastic venue with a great team of staff.”

Janet Matheson/ Managing Director Conferences & Events / Professional Conference Organisers Association representative / NZ

“I’ve just come back from a conference in Hamilton and all I can say is WOW. Brilliant conference facilities, such friendly locals and great options for pre-and- post activities. Gutted I missed the yoga in the Japanese Garden at Hamilton Gardens, as this sounded like a highlight. Thanks Waikato for delivering a great experience.”

Jake Downing / Head of Tourism / Weta Workshop / NZ

“For my money, holding the CINZ 2016 Annual Conference in Hamilton, Waikato was a stroke of genius. Not only did it reveal how Hamilton is at the centre of things, with the Hobbiton Movie Set a clip up the road and the impressive, organic Zealong Tea Estate with its new conference & events centre 10 minutes away, it’s also home to the world-renowned Hamilton Gardens, the Waitomo Caves and a host of sporting venues. The gala event at Hobbiton Movie Set, and being able to dress up and be part of it all, was truly the icing on the cake. It was like being a part of the film. The way they put it together and the fact that everybody dressed up for the event was something I’ll never forget. It has been a real highlight of my year travelling in 2016.”

Jill Varley / Associate Editor / BTPublishing / Sydney

The Waikato is proud to be home to the Māori King and the cultural significance of the region is evident in the many taonga (treasures) of the Tainui tribe, which adorn the local museums.

The region is one of the richest agricultural areas in New Zealand, and in the world. It also has a proud reputation as a centre for innovation and creativity across a wide range of industry and business sectors.

Hamilton and the Waikato are conveniently located. Several highways pass through the region, including State Highway 1, which connects to Auckland in the north and Taupo in the south. A train service also operates between Hamilton and Auckland. State Highway 3 links Hamilton with Waitomo, taking in towns such as Otorohanga where the popular kiwi house and native bird park are located.

The region’s climate is temperate with summer temperatures generally in the early to mid-20s with some days reaching 30 degrees Celsius. Winter temperatures average between five and 14 degrees Celsius.

The metropolis of Hamilton city is where sophistication meets friendly kiwi lifestyle. World-class events and visitor activities on offer are complemented by a rich cultural mix, vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene, extensive shopping options and leading art galleries.

The region’s diverse natural landscape offers sensational opportunities. The diversity includes ancient mountains, stretching plains, rugged black sand beaches, and subterranean cave systems. The Waikato is known for its rolling green hills, native forests, and mighty river (the Waikato River), all of which combine to make the region an excellent walking, hiking, cycling and water-sport destination.

If a good taste of New Zealand’s world-famous adventure is on the agenda, then the Waikato will thrill. The Waitomo Caves offer an underground playground of black water rafting, abseiling and cave exploration under glow worm-studded ‘skies’. Above ground, the mighty Waikato River wends its way through the region, offering great kayaking, cruising, trout fishing and jet boating – particularly on the picturesque hydro lakes, such as Lake Karapiro.

Regional SnapshotConference and business event attendees are spoilt for choice when coming to the Waikato. Not only are conference facilities top-rate, but the variety of experiences and activities on offer for team building, and pre-and-post conference opportunities, are phenomenal. From legendary surfing beaches, underground wonders, Middle-earth movie magic, and a thriving metropolitan city, the Waikato region boasts diversity and endless activity options.

Hamilton and the Waikato’s international gateway is Auckland International Airport, which is just over an hour’s drive from Hamilton city. The Hamilton & Waikato Business Events team provide a complimentary meet and greet

service at Auckland International Airport for large international conferences. This service includes welcoming international delegates and coordinating movement to shuttle buses or car hire.

Hamilton Airport is a 20-minute drive from the central city and services regular flights from Wellington, Christchurch and Palmerston North. It has international charter flight capability for aircrafts with a capacity of up to 14 seats.

Hamilton city is the centre of the upper North Island’s recently developed road network.

HamiltonHamilton is the region’s main city at the hub of the Waikato. Hamilton is renowned for its cultural and creative diversity, pulsing and pleasing restaurant scene, wide range of events and festivals, and shopping opportunities (The Base Shopping Centre is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere). Te Awamutu and Surrounds“The Town of Roses” offers wonderful walking, hiking and cycling options. Hiking opportunities include scaling the Waikato’s highest peak of Mt Pirongia (959 metres). Another towering gem is Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, a mainland ecological island and wildlife sanctuary, where 3,400 hectares of pest-proof mountain reserve is protected.

North WaikatoSteeped in cultural history (including the home of the Māori king), this area also boasts stunning natural landscapes, an international motorsport park and boutique lodges. It is also on Auckland’s doorstep.

South WaikatoHome to the Waikato River Trails – 100kms to explore on foot or bike – and the internationally acclaimed pure water from the Blue Spring, accessed via Te Waihou Walkway. Corrugated iron creations, artisan cheese, trout fishing, a timber museum, farmland and forestry add to the area’s identity.

Te Aroha and SurroundsOne of the world’s only hot water soda springs feeds the therapeutic mineral pools in this town. Te Aroha also offers art gallery foraging, walking, hiking and biking opportunities. Commanding views can be enjoyed from the top of Mt Te Aroha.

RaglanRaglan is synonymous with surf – its black sand beaches are legendary, offering one of the world’s longest left-hand surf breaks. Raglan’s bohemian vibe and alternative accommodation options (silo, yurt, caboose, tepee, and beach bach) are also a delight.

Waitomo and SurroundsFrom boat rides under thousands of glittering glow worms to adrenalin-fuelled black water rafting and abseiling… this has to be one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring places.

The Hobbiton Movie Set TourThe Hobbiton tour acts as a perfect incentive activity. Be escorted by a guide through the five hectare site, recounting fascinating details of how the Hobbiton Movie Set was created. Hobbit Holes™, The Green Dragon Inn, the Mill and other structures can be viewed – enjoy seeing how this beautiful piece of Waikato farmland was transformed into the Shire™ from Middle-earth™.

Hobbiton™ Movie Set

Situated on a 550 hectare working sheep and beef farm is The Hobbiton Movie Set. When scouting around for settings for his epic movie adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Kiwi Director Sir Peter Jackson found exactly what he was looking for in the green paddocks of the Waikato, just outside Matamata.

To conclude a Hobbiton Movie Set experience, why not experience a tour of the Shire under moonlight. Each guest will receive an authentic handheld lantern to light the way through the wandering paths of Hobbiton. This stunning journey under the stars will travel through the village, breathtakingly lit up with smoking Hobbit hole chimneys and lanterns glowing against the darkness.

The Party MarqueeThe Party Marquee is a fully themed marquee created from authentic canvas. The marquee has beautiful hardwood floors and has been placed adjacent to the Green Dragon Inn. Festively decorated throughout with glowing lanterns and coloured bunting, the Party Marquee creates a party atmosphere to remember. The raised garden bar looks out over Hobbiton Movie Set’s lake ‒ the perfect backdrop to any event.

The Green Dragon™ InnThe Green Dragon Inn was the meeting place for all residents of Hobbiton, who would gather in the warm surroundings of the bar to chatter about the day’s events. An exact replica of The Green Dragon Inn, as seen in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies, has been masterfully recreated in the heart of the Shire. The barrels of The Green Dragon Inn are filled with the Inn’s exclusive Southfarthing™ ale, stout, cider and gingerbeer - a perfect match to any feast in the Shire. The Green Dragon Inn is fully themed with indoor and outdoor fireplaces and provides professional catering services with fully licensed bars.
