August 12th was not goingto be any different fromany other Monday, or so Ithought. As I was getting
ready for work,I was doing whatmost of us do first thing in themorning, and that was scrollthrough my Facebook account toread the various posts. What I hadnot expected to read was that myfriend Brian Miller from back in myrestaurant days had suddenlypassed away the previous night. He
was my co-worker,my boss, andmy friend. I was in a state of shock.
Struggling with feelings associ-ation with losing my close friend,I decided to keep my usualschedule and attend the monthlyTRAFC meeting. Our meeting
started out with the announce-ment that long-time SolanoCounty resident and TRAFC mem-ber Mike Gonzalez had passedaway the previous Thursday. Mike
was a member of the VacavilleChamber of Commerce since1952, served twice as the Chairof the Board, and was a pastrecipient of the TRAFC Volunteerof the Year Award.
Mikes funeral was theupcoming Thursday with Briansopen house on Saturday.
As I at tended Mikes funeraland listening to three separateindividuals speaking on theirmemories of Mike,I could nothelp but to have wished I hadknown him better. Listening tothese close family friends speakabout Mike went to the absolutecore of the type of person Mike
was. He was a devoted husband,a father of two, and a father-fig-ure to many.Mike was an amaz-ing man who touched many peo-ples lives. Mike and I had talkedabout going out to lunch onmany occasions, but we couldnever set the date. What I wouldgive to roll back the clock andhave that lunch with him.
So now two days later, it is
Saturday and needless to say Iwas nervous when walking upto Brians house.Considering Ihad not seen or spoken to himin over three years,I selfishlyhad a self-centered moment in
wondering if I would even bewelcomed here. It could nothave been further from thetruth. Brians open house was acelebration of his life andreunion of sorts as I was able tosee many friends from my daysin the restaurant business. We
were allthere toconsole hisfamily andto remem-ber aboutBrian, butthere wasalso a lotof laughterin tellingstories, giv-ingspeeches,and talkingabout the
good ole days with him.We disliked knowing that we
were all back together underthese circumstances, but someone
even stated that Brian would haveloved knowing how much we allcared to come together like this.
Although it had been three yearssince I have seen Brian I will misshim. To sum it up,Brian was anamazing husband, father, grandfa-ther, and loyal friend.Anyone thatcrossed his path could tell you a
wonderful story about him.Hewas truly genuine and would giveyou the shirt off his back even ifhe didn't have another one toreplace it with.
You know folks; there is noth-ing like back-to-back deaths thatsure make you think about howshort life really is.One friend Iknew really well, and one friendI wish I knew more.
Facebook is a wonderful wayfor all of us to keep an eye on
your fr iends and family withoutever having to speak to themdirectly. The downside is we canget so comfortable in thisprocess,we often forget to pickup the phone and check in onthem from time-to-time to heartheir voice and to hear how theyare really doing.
I was speaking to fellow col-league and friend Debi Taveyabout both friends and how I
wished I had the time to s tay incontact with my family andfriends. She simply said,Youhave to make time. She is rightand although we are in August, itis never too early for any of usto set new resolutions in life.
I am sorry if my article thismonth is not about businessrelated items. But then again wealso need those friendlyreminders that life is short and
we all need to f ind our balanceand focus on our priorities.

No excuses, Make time!
Our Three-Part Strategic Plan
As Our President/CEOMark Creffield talk aboutlast month, each June, the
Vacaville Chamber ofCommerce Board of Directorstakes a retreat to outline priori-ties for the coming fiscal year. This year, our strategic planningprocess yielded three key initia-tives for 2013-14.Our three-partplan is to re-start a countywidelegislative advocacy group, createan ombudsman process at theChamber to help new businessesnavigate the regulatory processof getting starting in Vacaville, and to more frequently commu-nicate our successes to Chambermembers and the broader com-munity.Last month ourPresident/CEO Mark Creffieldbriefly touched on the strategicaction plans that came out of ourboard retreat.
A countywide legislative advo-cacy group would consist of allnine Solano County Chambers.Asa group, we plan to focus onstate, federal and county-specificissues, backing statewide officesand positions. Our collectiveforce will give us a more power-ful voice to influence candidatesand legislation to be businesssupportive. Our goal is to be fullyup and running by next summer,in time to have a real impact onthe 2014 elections. BAC-PAC, theChambers Business andCommunity Political ActionCommittee, will continue to focuslocally on Vacaville, while thecountywide group tacklesbroader scale legislation andpolitical races.
Our ombudsman program willfill a critical current gap for busi-nesses wanting to open in
Vacaville.TheChambersgoal is toconnectnew andfuture busi-nesses withresourcesand a pointof contactfor ques-tions aboutthe city, state andfederal
processes each business isrequired to undergo when settingup a place of business in town.
We envision a road map andboth a print and online tool thatcan be followed. This not onlyhelps Vacaville attract and retainnew businesses, and get them
started in a timely manner, it alsoshows the intrinsic value of theChamber and our business com-munitys desire to be a place ofgrowth.
Finally, we plan to focus onincreasing awareness of what theChamber does, and to more con-sistently deliver the good news of
what we have accomplished.YourChamber staff and Board ofDirectors are constantly at workon your behalf, but so much goeson behind the scenes that youarent always aware of exactly
what we have done.We plan tobe more proactive in the coming
year in letting you know what weare doing and how it benefits you.
I will bring you updates onour initiatives as we executethem. For now, look forward to anexciting, strategically focused
year ahead.

One of my favorite things about
Solano County is that the resi-
dents here really make exerciseand fitness a priority.
And there are so many ways to sneak a
bit of fitness into your daily routine.
Whether a quick bike ride or a weekend
hike with the family, I try and find time to
weave exercise into my daily habits.
There is an easy way that you can easilyenhance your overall health while at work.It wont cost you a cent. All you need are
some sturdy shoes and a couple of extra
minutes to spare.
What is it? A walking meeting.
Everyone is busy these days so why not
take that weekly staff meeting outside and
pound the pavement? You get the benefit ofworking while exercising and enjoying the
outdoors. We are all so busy at home and at
work, so re-claiming some fresh air and
exercise during the workday is smart timemanagement.
The health benefits of walking are well
documentedjust 30 minutes a day,five days
a week is enough to improve your health.
Research has shown that regular brisk
walking lowers blood pressure and the
effects of depression.Walking reduces therisk of stroke and heart disease by 40 per-cent and can be good for stress reduction.
It can be hard these days to get away from
distractions like email, smart phones,and
instant messaging;a walking meeting
changes up the scenery a bit, letting you
concentrate and focus. Clearly, the more we
walk and the farther our two feet take us,the more rewards we reap.
As an organization, Kaiser Permanente
has been walking the walk talk in myriad
ways. The most visible evidence is ourEverybody Walk! program (www.every-
bodywalk.org).On the website,youll find
plenty of free resources, including a mobile-
phone app to keep you moving.
Walking meetings can also strengthen
work relationships with your team.Getting
out of the traditional office lets you con-nect with people in a different light.Thechange of atmosphere and movement can
stimulate creativity as well,letting you
return to the office with new focus and
clarity.
Yes, there are some logistics involved to
taking your staff meetings outside.Consider
keeping T-shirts, workout pants, hats, appro-
priate shoes and sunscreen in your office. If
you are looking to walk around the lunch
hour, choose a, park,a quiet street, or just a
destination route that ends in picking uplunch or coffee.
But remember: Only certain meetings
are fit for walking. The ones that work
best are more conversational, such as
check-ins, brainstorms,getting to know
you, or shared problem-solving sessions.
This is not the time for extensive notetaking!
As with any productive meeting, its
always a good idea to conclude your walk-
and-talk with a summary of how each par-
ticipant is going to follow up.
No matter what your role or position,
daily exercise is important.Walking meet-
ings are a great choice to help stay healthy
and strong.
