Ahmedabad Page 3 Business 3 Bengal issues tender to sell Saradha properties Kolkata, The West Bengal government has issued a global tender to value the seized assets and properties of the scam-tainted Saradha Group in West Bengal and other states, a government counsel Monday told the Calcutta High Court. During the hearing of a public interest litiga- tion seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Saradha Group scam, gov- ernment pleader Ashok Banerjee said 208 dif- ferent properties of the group in the state have been seized and around 180 other properties are located in other states. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier said that the government will try to indemnify the duped investors of the company by selling the properties of the company. Meanwhile, a division bench of Justice A.K. Banerjee and Justice M.K. Chaudhuri asked the amicus curiae (friend of the court) whether a committee consisting of experts from different fields be set up to look into all aspects of the case, including the return of money to the inves- tors. The amicus curiae appointed by the court to assist it is slated to inform the court about his views Tuesday when the matter comes up for hearing next. Appearing for the state, Banerjee opposed the prayer for a CBI probe, and stated that the state investigating agencies were doing a good job and that they should be given adequate time. WESTERN TIMES AHMEDABAD WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 2013 Rupee hits new low of 58.95 against dollar Mumbai, The Indian rupee Tues- day hit a new record low of 58.95 against a dollar on continued worries over current account deficit and increased demand for the US currency from import- ers in the absence of any intervention by the central bank. The partially con- vertible rupee weakened by 77 paise to hit a new low of 58.95 against a dol- lar at the interbank foreign exchange market here. The Indian currency had registered its biggest fall in almost two years Monday. It had slumped by 1.9 percent to close at 58.16 against a dollar. The value of rupee has depreciated by more than eight percent in the past one and half month. It has dropped in 16 out of the last 18 trading sessions. The rupee is under pressure due to worries over widening current ac- count deficit and firming of the dollar against major global currencies, includ- ing the Euro and the Japa- neseYen. Absence of any intervention from the Re- serve Bank of India (RBI) has intensified pressure on the rupee. The slide continued even though the government said it was taking medium-term mea- sures to control current account deficit. Economic Affairs Sec- retary Arvind Mayaram said the panic in the mar- ket was “unwarranted”. “I think this will settle down in a while. We should not worry but we are watching the situation closely,” Mayaram told re- porters in New Delhi Mon- day while reacting to the sharp drop in the value of rupee. The sliding rupee put pressure on the markets. The benchmark Sensex of the Bombay Stock Ex- change (BSE) slumped 1.33 percent to 19,182.90 points, while the Nifty of the National Stock Ex- change also declined by 1.33 percent to 5,799.95 points. Case against Jindal Steel, others in coal allocation case New Delhi, The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Tues- day said a case has been filed against Jindal Steel and others for alleged ir- regularities in allocation being conducted in 19 lo- cations here and in Hyderabad.cations in Delhi and Hyderabad in connection with the case," the agency said, adding the case pertained to award of coal blocks in Jharkhand and had been referred to by the Central Vigilance Commissioner. Oil firms right in redefining business models: Moily New Delhi, In an indication of the government's thinking on revising gas prices, Petro- leum Minister M. Veerappa Moily said Tuesday oil companies were right in redefining their business models in view of rising production costs and re- duced profits. "The average produc- tion cost has risen from $2 per BOE (barrel of oil equivalent) in 2001 to $12 per BOE in 2012 and their (international oil compa- nies') operating profit mar- gins have reduced to 11 percent in 2012 from 16 percent in 2005," Moily said. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 3rd IEF NOC-IOC Forum here co- hosted by ONGC and Shell. Observing that lique- fied natural gas (LNG) pricing is fast turning an issue, Moily said importers now desire to move away from oil-linked gas prices to the international Henry hub gas pricing because of the current high oil price band. "So how new deals will take place, is fast turn- ing into a watchable game," the minister said. The C. Rangarajan Committee, appointed by the prime minister to look into the mechanism of ex- ploration Production Shar- ing Contracts (PSCs), has recently submitted its re- port. "The Rangarajan Committee report is under active consideration and the actions for implemen- tation of Rangarajan Com- mittee recommendations have been initiated," Moily announced at the confer- ence of national and inter- national oil companies. Putting the issue in perspective, Moily said: "Government, on the other hand, all across the globe has this task of maximiz- ing the returns from their oil and gas resources be- sides doing economic and social goods to their masses by and large. This will require IOCs (interna- tional oil companies) to shed off their pure com- mercial objectives and partnering in host government's concerns towards society and nation building."Pointing out that top 10 IOCs have an aver- age reserve life of only 13 years and declining further compared with 78 years for the top 10 national oil companies (NOCs), which is not a good sign for the industry, Moily said NOCs will require partnerships for extraction of huge un- conventional reserves. "Need of the hour is to undertake huge R&D ac- tivities in areas of shale oil and gas, tight oil, gas hy- drates, coal gasification. We require the partner- ships and investment there. There is also a need for partnerships in ma- tured conventional fields where a lot of oil is still left to be exploited," Moily said. Rupee will stabilise in 3-4 days: Government New Delhi, The Indian rupee, which has plunged by al- most 2.5 percent in the last two sessions and hit a record low of 58.95 against a dollar Tuesday, is likely to stabilise in the next three to four days, a top government officials said. "In next three-four days, we will see a mid- course correction... Rupee is going to stabilise and we are going to see a positive movement,” Economic Af- fairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram told reporters here. The partially convert- ible rupee weakened by 77 paise to hit a new low of 58.95 against a dollar at the interbank foreign ex- change market in Mumbai. Mayaram said the gov- ernment was not “unduly disturbed” by the recent fall in the value of Indian cur- rency. "This is a temporary phase. This is simply a cor- rection. Our indication is some of the FIIs (foreign institutional investors) are now poised to bring in large funds,” Mayaram said. "Certainly we are not happy about it, but we are certainly not unduly wor- ried about it. There will be a course correction,” he added. Chief economic advisor in the finance min- istry Raghuram Rajan said the market regulator Secu- rities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Reserve Bank of India would take “warranted” action to control the rupee slide. "SEBI, RBI and the government are keenly fol- lowing what is happening and everybody will act when the time comes,” Rajan said while address- ing a press conference here. Rajan said the factors that were responsible for rupee slide were reversing and the currency would stabilise in a few days.
