Figures from aerospace trade organisation, ADS Group has highlighted the surge has resulted in the largest ever month-on-month increase in the order book. Looking to the rest of the year, we expect the focus to shift to maximising production and delivery numbers. “Already this year, we have seen the number of aircraft being delivered increase sig- nificantly, putting us on track for a record-breaking year for aircraft deliveries, contribut- ing more than £10 billion to the UK already this year.” In total the UK aerospace sector directly and indirectly em- ploys a staggering 229,100 people. It has a turnover of £27.8 billion and has a 17 per cent global market share. The industry has also seen a 9.4 per cent annual growth. The UK aerospace industry has a global reputation for spe- cialising in the development and manufacture of some of the most complicated and high tech parts of modern aircraft. This expertise is expected to generate around $600 billion for the UK economy between now and 2032 due to increased requirements for large civil airliners, business and region- al aircraft and helicopters. The trade mission was beingled by Deputy Prime MinisterNick Clegg.

Renishaw, which has itsheadquarters in Wotton-under-Edge, in Gloucester-shire, is being represented byRhydian Pountney, generalmanager – ROW sales divi-sion. The 40-strong trade del-egation aimed to take advant-age of the opportunitiespresented by the new Indiangover nment’s focus on eco-nomic growth. It included

the Advanced ManufacturingGroup of the India-UK JointEconomic and Trade Commit-tee (JETCO), said, “It is a greathonour to be invited to attendthis mission and comes at atime that Renishaw is makingfurther investments in Indiathat will be announced by theDeputy Prime Ministerduring the week. Today weemploy more than 250 staff inIndia which includes five salesoffices supporting our expand-ing customer base, plusproduct assembly and soft-ware development at our largefacility in Pune.”

Renishaw was part of thedelegation focused on theaerospace sector and speakingin New Delhi on Monday, NickClegg said, “As the leader inthe global aerospace industry,the UK can also help Indiastrengthen its lead in thisvaluable market. Ouraerospace industry – wh i chcomprises big names like RollsRoyce, BAE systems, Airbusand Cobham and smaller com-panies such Group Rhodes,Renishaw and logistics com-pany Patton Air – p ro d u c e sand supplies some of the mostpioneering aircraft compon-ents in the world.”

The delegation was organ-ised by UK Trade and Invest-ment (UKTI) the governmentdepartment that helps UK-based companies succeed inthe global economy. Renishaw,which last year celebrated its40th anniversary, now em-ploys just under 3,400 peopleglobally, of which 1,900 are loc-ated at its five main sites in thecounty. Last July, the companyreported a record turnover of£355.5 million for its financialyear, of which 94 per cent wasdue to exports.

Renishaw invests in Indian market by expanding 3D printing

On the final day of the tradedelegation that he led to India,the UK Deputy Prime Min-ister, Nick Clegg, made aspeech in which he announceda new investment in 3D print-ing being made by Renishaw.

The decision we have madeto create our first Indian ad-ditive manufacturing (metal

3D printing) technical centreat our existing facility inPune, forms part of Ren-i s h aw ’s continuing invest-ment in the development,manufacture and applicationof exciting additive manufac-turing technologies. The newPune additive manufacturing(AM) technical centre alsomaintains our long term com-mitment to the Indian marketwhere we have traded sincethe early 1980s. Additive man-ufacturing, often referred toas metal 3D printing, is widelyrecognised as a potentiallytransformational manufactur-ing technology that will

impact on everything fromcomponents in aircraft en-gines and satellites, to dentalrestorations and surgery forfacial reconstruction. Today,Renishaw is the only UK sup-plier of these types of ma-chines which are developed atour sites in Staffordshire andGloucestershire, and manu-factured at our facility nearCardiff. Hundreds of bottles of thequar tet’s Cheltenham-basedproduct Sibling Triple Dis-tilled Gin will be stocked atstores across the UK and Ire-land.

Cicely Elliott-Berry, direct-or at Sibling Distillery, said itwas a dream come true for theteam.

The drink took severalmonths to develop after ex-tensive research and tastingsessions and includes local in-gredients where possible.Water used in the process isfrom Noverton Farm in Prest-bury, while the vanilla is fromMadag ascar.

The gin is produced using acrystal distillery, thought to bethe first of its kind in Europeand even the world. The glassand steel design, which partscan be added to allowing in-creased production, means thegin can be monitored at allstages. It was reported earlierthis year the product wasalready being stocked in keybars in the town.

This includes Lily Gins onRegent Street, No 131 andCrazy Eights on the Promen-ade, Soho Bar and John Gor-dons in Montpellier, The Re-treat on Suffolk Parade andThe Tavern on Royal WellPlace. Sibling also receivedcase orders from bars inLondon and even Malmo, inthe south of Sweden. And theteam sold so many bottles atthis year’s Cheltenham Foodand Drink Festival, in Mont-pellier Gardens, that they hadto make several trips over theweekend to restock theirstand.

Survey reveals city businesses need help to break into overseas marketsMany businesses in the Bris-tol area are exporting success-fully, but those which aren’twant more help if they are tobreak into overseas markets.

That was the findings fromthe third and final BusinessPulse special report from thefirst survey, published yester-day by accountancy and busi-ness advisory firm BDO LLP.

Business leaders from thecity and surrounding areastook part in the exclusivesurvey and gave their views onthe topic of exporting and thejourneys taken to tap into for-eign markets.

Exporting has been high-

lighted by business expertsand the Government as a keydriver to economic recoveryand for building on Bristol’sposition as a leading hub forcommerce and business, notjust in the UK, but acrossEurope and beyond. The re-cently released Great BritishExport Report from FedEx re-ports that SMEs based in theSouth West and London arethe most likely to export over-seas. However, it also high-lights that there is still a lackof awareness; not only of thebenefits to exporting but alsoof the resources available. TheBusiness Pulse survey asked a

West firms are prepared totravel across the globe for thecorrect opportunity. Despiteongoing instability in theeurozone, western Europe wasidentified as the most populardestination for internationaltrading by firms in the region,which has been supported bythe close transport links andthe EU. Graham Randall, part-ner and head of BDO in Bris-tol, said: “The topic of export-ing has produced someinteresting results in ours u r ve y.

“It is clear that the issuessurrounding internationaltrade are complex but some

key points have emerged. Mostimportant is the fact that busi-nesses have the drive toexpand overseas, however theproblem still lies in under-standing how. There is a feel-ing that more help and sup-port is needed and businessesare calling for the backing ofthe Government not only inpractical terms but also whenit comes to understanding cul-tural and regulatory differ-ences and establishing newcustomers. The private sectoralso has an important part toplay to help businessesprosper in new markets acrossthe world.

Nato summit in Wales is good news for Bristol businessesThe hospitality sector in Bris-tol is hoping to make the mostof a major international eventtaking place just over the Bris-tol Channel.

More than 150 leaders anddignitaries from across theworld will be heading to New-port next week for a Natosummit.

While many will be stayingin Wales, the event is beingstaged at the Celtic Manorresort which previouslyhosted the Ryder Cup golftournament, some people willcross the bridge and use Bris-tol as a base.
