Starting with a forum on identity theft that many participants said was the best they’ve ever attended, and ending with the presentation of the state’s Chamber of the Year Silver Award to President John D’Ambrosio, the Orange County Chamber had quite a September.

Although no organization can be everything to all people, your Chamber sometimes comes very close. Just to recap: ● September 1: Hosted by our Government

Initiatives and Education Committee, a forum was presented by representatives of the NYS Attorney General’s office on how to identify and protect yourself from identity theft and common consumer frauds. The free session was so well-received, we’ve invited the presenters to write a piece for The Business Viewpoint. The Government Initiatives and Education Com-mittee hosts informational sessions like these on alternate months.

● September 8: Dozens of new members networked over coffee and bagels at a New Member Power Hour, learning more about how they can maximize their membership in-vestment. These free gatherings are also of-fered on alternate months. Old-time members are welcome to attend as well.● September 15: One of the Chamber’s big-

gest events of the year -- the EXPO business trade show --was held for the 18th year in a row at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor and featured more than 170 exhibitors and thou-sands of visitors. Many of our 2010 EXPO vendors and visitors commented that it was the best EXPO they’ve seen in years, and that it generated a new excitement and a feeling of positive energy everywhere in the building. It was a great way to kick off the end of summer-start of business season.● September 15: The fifth annual Business

Idol competition took place as part of EXPO and featured presentations by nine of our best

small business members. Anyone who stopped in the Idol room during those presentations couldn’t help but be impressed by these busi-nesses and, in many cases, entertained by their creativity. As mentioned elsewhere in this is-sue of Viewpoint, the winner was Storm King Adventure Tours, owned by Kris Seiz who will receive approximately $16,000 in marketing assistance over the course of the next year. Not bad for a $25 investment and three minutes of her time.● September 22: A fascinating presentation

was delivered by Dr. Michelle Koury, Chief Operating Officer for Crystal Run Health-care, who discussed some of the ramifications of the new federal health care reform legisla-tion. Had there been more time for the mem-bership breakfast meeting, questions and dis-cussion likely would have continued for hours. ● September 24: A first-ever Chamber

event called “Dance with the Chamber Stars” was held at a brand new venue (for the Cham-

ber) in the City of Newburgh. More than 150 people danced the night away in the fabulous Green Room of the historic Ritz Theater. “I’d forgotten how much fun dancing is,” said one member. “And for only $25. Chairman’s MessageI come from a family of eight. Each in-

dividual experienced various ups and downs and their philosophies about life and success were different and unique. Throughout the

years, I’ve had disagree-ments with most of my siblings and them, like-wise, with me. Although it might seem unfair, the strength of my re-lationship with each of my siblings, how much I depend, spend time,

and communicate with them varied with the depth of our individual relationship.

This is true even when it comes to how much I’ll share about what’s going on profes-sionally in my life. I know I might be able to share my dream with some and they would say “can’t wait to see that become a reality for you” while others might say “don’t you think you should reach for something more practi-cal or obtainable.”

By this time you might be wondering what this all has to do with businesses and community in Orange County. Well, it is about something my mother passed down to each of us. Family members help, nurture,

support and depend on each other in differ-ent ways at different times and all that might be subjective. However, if a family member is in trouble, the speed with which we quickly drop our differences and rally to the rescue is nothing short of inspirational.

Often I’ve heard about the big divide that sometimes exists between small and large businesses, especially when it comes to the Chamber. At one of our events, you might have heard me say that “we are a business family.” I truly believe that. Yes, we might have differences and go about achieving our goals in different ways. Yes, we might feel that one “sibling” has it easier or better than another. But I believe that each and every one of us knows the power of family. Our business family is hurting and some members are in trouble. Let’s try to help each other out. Let’s try to do a little business with someone we haven’t done business with before. Let’s show our larger businesses how much we appreciate the contributions they make to our commu-nity. Let’s show our smaller businesses how their contributions make a better tomorrow possible. Let’s be family.

Do the right (or left) thingWhether you’re strong and

dignified like the Republican el-ephant or smart and brave like the Democratic donkey ….or some-where in between…you must vote on Tuesday, November 2.

In these “interesting” times, it’s never been more important for every one of us to go to the polls and let our voices be heard. None of us can afford to be complacent with so much at stake.

Unemployment, taxes, health care, educa-tion, crime, terrorism, ethics in government, the environment, our children’s futures…very little is untouched by the people we vote into power. Don’t let these people get into office without you having a say. If you don’t say it on Election

Day, you have no right to whine later on when things don’t go your way.

Two other quick items before I close: • If you have an idea for something

the Chamber could or should be do-ing, please get it to me. Just shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]. Each and every idea will receive care-

ful consideration. • Patronize our local businesses, especially

as the holiday season approaches. Buy locally, give locally, fly locally (Stewart Airport) and build locally. It’s the only way our economy is going to survive.

Storm King Adventure Tours is new Business IdolStorm King Adventure Tours is “…your one-

stop destination for Hudson Valley outdoor adventures.” It’s also the winner of our fifth an-nual Orange County Business Idol competition.

In business for only four years, SKAT is owned by Kris Seiz, who impressed the Business Idol judges with her passion for celebrating the “Hudson River Valley’s most treasured assets in a unique way.” Sporting a PFD (personal flota-tion device, not a lifejacket, as Kris was quick to point out) and toting a paddle (not an oar), Kris explained during her Idol presentation how she has built a solid client base and dozens of re-peat customers in the four short years that she’s been in business. She offers a Club member-ship, which already lists more than 100 outdoor enthusiasts. SKAT has become very popular with folks from New York City and New Jersey, but as a Cornwall-based business, Kris is anxious to get the word out to her own backyard here in the Hudson Valley. Therein lies the challenge for this year’s Business Idol and it will be the focus for the $16,000 marketing package that Kris has won from the Orange County Chamber.

In addition to offering guided kayaking and hiking tours in the Hudson Valley, SKAT provides instruction for clients, both individ-ual and in groups. In addition, Kris says, “We have the closest access to Bannerman’s Castle of any of the other kayaking outfitters.” With the holidays approaching, Kris says that gift certificates (particularly memberships) are very popular gifts. For $100, a member receives two free kayak tours ($120 value), 20% off all future tours and rentals, a SKAT hat or t-shirt, bum-per sticker and invitations to SKAT’s opening and closing season parties.

With all the above already in place, Storm

King Adventure Tours’ natural marketing savvy was evident, so the company was a natural to be chosen as our 2010 Business Idol. Kris has already met with the Chamber’s PR/Marketing Committee to discuss strategies going forward, and the ideas were flying fast and furiously.

Also supporting SKAT’s Idol selection was Kris’ commitment to giving back to the commu-

nity. The company donates a veteran’s kayak tour every year for the Wounded Warriors. Last year alone, 23 soldiers participated and Gen. David Pe-traeus presented each with Medals of Excellence.

Along with other community organizations, SKAT participates annually in the Cornwall Coastal Cleanup, donating kayaks for the effort. Last year alone, their volunteers pulled 18 tires

and more than 600 pounds of garbage from the Moodna Marsh and the shores of the Hudson River. They are involved in many other local volunteer efforts as well.

Congratulations to this year’s Business Idol! For more information about Storm King Ad-venture Tours, call 845- 534-7800 or visit www.stormkingadventuretours.com.

Business Idol contributors make it happen

The Chamber is very grateful to the following Chamber members who donat-ed the products and services that make up a great ’10 Business Idol grand prize (estimated value of more than $16,000):

• A&E Advertising and Web Design• Clear Channel Radio• ColorPage, Inc.• HV Parent magazine• WGNY/FOX Radio• The winner also receives complimentary

membership in the Orange County Cham-ber of Commerce for 2011, a free booth at EXPO ’11 and e-free inserts in The Busi-ness Viewpoint for an entire year, as well as a free marketing consultation with the Cham-ber’s PR/Marketing Committee.

Cornwall-based Storm King Adventure Tours was the winner of the 2010 Orange County Business Idol held as part of the Chamber’s annual business EXPO at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor. SKAT owner Kris Seiz (center) accepts the Idol banner from previ-ous winners, Julie and Ralph Bush (right), owners of Jack of All Trades. This year’s Idol runner-up was Expert Landscaping and Lawn Care, owned by Craig Pelsue, holding the banner on the left. Pictured at the podium are Chamber President Dr. John D’Ambrosio and Janice Valentino, Co-Chairman of the Chamber’s PR/Marketing Committee, which hosts the Idol competition each year.

Room rental rate reduced

Several months ago, the Chamber was forced to establish fees for the rental of the Larkin Community Board Room on the second floor

of the Chamber Business Center in Montgom-ery. While funds are still required for the regu-lar upkeep and maintenance of that room, the Board of Directors has directed the staff to re-duce those fees in order to make the conference room accessible to more of our members.

As a result, all the fees for member use of the Larkin Room have been cut in half and go-

ing forward, a Chamber member can reserve the spacious Larkin Room for just $50 for half a day or $100 for a full day. If you require the room for a weekday evening (5:00-9:00 p.m.), the charge will be only $85. Hourly rates can be negotiated based on the above charges.

These rates may not cover all the costs in-curred for rental of the Larkin Room, but the

Chamber directors and staff understand how tough it is for our member businesses and we want to make our facilities as accessible to our members as possible. If you are interested in using the Larkin Room -- or any of our other meeting rooms, which are available free of charge -- contact Roseann at 457-9700 or [email protected].
