RAINGUARD® HDWithout it, you’re not ready. A wet lens or a misguided breath that would fog conventional glass will never cost you a view. This patented, permanent, water-repellent coating causes moisture from rain, snow, sleet or condensation to bead up and scatter less light, so you get a clear, bright view when other optics would be rendered useless.

XTR® TECHNOLOGYUsing 60 layers of coatings on each prism, this revolutionary system harnesses and optimizes available light, boosting Elite binoculars to their world-leading 99.73% light transmission per lens. It’s exclusive to Bushnell,® and hands-down the most efficient means for transporting light through an optical system.

ED PRIME GLASS ED Prime Extra-Low Dispersion fluorite glass delivers amazing color resolution and contrast, and virtually eliminates chromatic aberration and color-fringing to bring out the most distinct details possible in low-light conditions.

ULTRA WIDE BAND COATING An anti-reflection coating process that is customized for every lens element in the optical path, in order to allow the maximum amount of light from the front glass all the way back to the eyepiece. The result? Optimum brightness and true color across the light spectrum.

RAINGUARD® HD Without it, you’re not ready. A wet lens or a misguided breath that would fog conventional glass will never cost you a view. This patented, permanent, water-repellent coating causes moisture from rain, snow, sleet or condensation to bead up and scatter less light, so you get a clear, bright view when other optics would be rendered useless.

WHY EXTRA-LOW DISPERSION? Unlike ordinary lens surfaces, the ED Prime Extra-Low Dispersion fluorite glass used in our new Legend Ultra HD binoculars allows the visible colors of the spectrum to focus at virtually the same point. This helps provide improved color resolution and contrast, practically eliminates chromatic aberration and color-fringing, and brings out detail even under low-light conditions.

Extra-Low Dispersion Glass

Red, green and blue color spectrums meet at the same focal plane to eliminate color aberration and provide the ultimate in crisp, HD-like images.

“ YOU’LL LOVE THEM OR WE’LL BUY THEM BACK. IT’S THAT SIMPLE AND THEY’RE THAT GOOD.”

BINOCULARS

Coated OpticsLens surface coatings reduce light loss and glare due to reflection for a brighter, higher-contrast image with less eye strain.

Types of Lens CoatingsCoated: A single layer on at least one lens surface. Fully Coated: A single layer on all air-to-glass surfaces.Multi-Coated: Multiple layers on at least one lens surface.Fully Multi-Coated: All air-to-glass surfaces feature multiple layers of anti-reflective coating. Fully multi-coated optical systems deliver the brightest, highest-contrast images with the least amount of eye strain because only a very small percentage of light is lost before it reaches the viewer’s eye.

Diopter AdjustmentA fine-focus adjustment ring usually provided around one eyepiece to accommodate for vision differences between the right and left eyes.

ED Prime GlassED Prime Extra-Low Dispersion glass delivers amazing color resolution and contrast, and virtually eliminates chromatic aberration and color-fringing to bring out the most distinct details possible in low-light conditions.

Enviro-FriendlyTrophy® XLT binoculars are made with enviro-friendly materials. That means we use no lead in the glass lenses or prisms, no PVC in the binocular case, no PAHs in the binocular itself and 100% recycled paper board packaging. Now you can see the outdoors with stunning clarity, and do your part to keep it beautiful.

Exit PupilRefers to the size of the circle of light visible at the eyepiece of a binocular. The larger the exit pupil, the brighter the image. To determine the size, divide the objective lens diameter by the power (an 8x 32 model has an exit pupil of 4mm).

Eye ReliefThe distance a binocular can be held away from the eye and still present the full field of view. Extended or long eye relief reduces eyestrain and is ideal for eyeglass wearers.

Field of View (F.O.V.)The side-to-side measurement of the circular viewing field or subject area. It is defined by the width in feet or meters of the area visible at 1,000 yards or meters. A wide-angle binocular features a wide field of view and is better for following action. Generally, the higher the magnification, the narrower the field of view.

Magnification (Power)Binoculars are often referred to by two numbers separated by an “x.” For example: 8x 32. The first number is the power, or magnification, of the binocular. With an 8x 32 binocular, the object being viewed appears to be eight times closer than you would see it with the unaided eye.

Objective LensThe second number in the formula (8x 32mm) is the diameter of the objective or front lens measured in millimeters. The larger the objective lens, the more light that enters the binocular and the brighter the image.

Porro Prism SystemIn porro prism binoculars, the objective or front lens is offset from the eyepiece. Porro prism binoculars provide greater depth perception and generally offer a wider field of view.

Roof Prism SystemIn roof prism binoculars, the prisms overlap closely, allowing the objective lenses to line up directly with the eyepiece. The result is a slim, streamlined shape in which the lenses and prisms are in a straight line. Roof-prism binoculars are less bulky and more rugged than an equivalent porro model.

Prism GlassMost optical prisms are made from borosilicate (BK-7) glass or barium crown (BaK-4) glass. BaK-4 is the higher-quality glass, yielding brighter images and high edge-to-edge sharpness.

RainGuard® HDWith this permanent, patented, hydrophobic and oleophobic lens coating, a foggy view is no longer an issue. This unique coating acts on water drops from rain, snow, sleet and even your own breath, reducing them into much smaller droplets. These tiny drops scatter less light, ensuring a clearer, brighter view.

ResolutionResolution, or definition, is the ability of a binocular to distinguish fine detail and retain clarity.

PC-3® Phase CoatingFound on the best roof-prism binoculars, this chemical coating is applied to the prisms to enhance resolution and contrast. Would not provide an advantage on porro-prism models.

Ultra Wide Band CoatingAn anti-reflection coating process that is customized for every lens element in the optical path, in order to allow the maximum amount of light from the front glass all the way back to the eyepiece. The result? Optimum brightness and true color across the light spectrum.

Waterproof/FogproofSome binoculars are O-ring sealed and nitrogen purged for total waterproof and fogproof protection. These models can withstand complete immersion in water and stay dry inside. The interior optical surfaces won’t fog due to rapid temperature change or humidity.

XTR® TechnologyAs light passes through the many prisms and lenses of a roof-prism binocular, some light is usually lost along the way. Our exclusive new XTR technology – utilizing 60 layers of coatings on each prism – conserves, harnesses and optimizes the available light. XTR delivers an amazing 99.73% light transmission per lens for a combined light transmission of 90%, making the Bushnell Elite® series the brightest binocular in its class.

Coated OpticsCoatings on lens surfaces reduce light loss and glare due to reflection, resulting in a brighter,higher-contrast image with reduced eye strain. Bushnell® spotting scopes are coated with amicroscopic layer of magnesium fluoride. More coating leads to better light transmission.

Types of Lens CoatingsCoated: A single layer on at least one lens surface.Fully Coated: A single layer on all air-to-glass surfaces.Multi-Coated: Multiple layers on at least one lens surface.Fully Multi-Coated: Multiple layers on all air-to-glass surfaces.

DigiscopingLong-range photography of birds or wildlife with a digital camera mounted behind theeyepiece of a spotting scope, using an accessory bracket or camera adapter tube.

Exit PupilThe exit pupil refers to the size of the column of light that exits a spotting scope. The larger the exit pupil, the brighter the image. To determine the size, divide the objectivelens diameter by the power. Thus, a 15x 45 model has an exit pupil, or useable light,of 3mm (45/15 = 3).

Eye ReliefThe distance a spotting scope can be held away from the eye and still present the full fieldof view. Extended or long eye relief reduces eye strain and is ideal for eyeglass wearers.

Field Of View (F.O.V.)Field of view is the side-to-side measurement of the circularviewing field or subject area. It is defined by the width infeet or meters of the area visible at 1,000 yards or meters.A wide field of view is better for following fast-movingaction or scanning for wildlife. Generally, the higher themagnification, the narrower the field of view.

Magnification (Power)Spotting scopes are often referred to by numbers separatedby an “x”. For example: 15–45x 60. The first part is thepower, or magnification, of the spotting scope. With a15–45x 60 variable power spotting scope, the object beingviewed appears to be 15–45 times closer than you wouldsee it with the unaided eye.

Near or Close FocusThe closest distance you can be to an object and maintainvisual clarity.

Objective Lens SizeThe number after the “x” in the formula (15–45x 60) is the diameter (60mm) of the objectiveor front lens. The larger the objective lens, the more light that enters the spotting scope andthe brighter the image.

Prism GlassMost optical prisms are made from borosilicate (BK-7) glass or barium crown (BaK-4) glass.BaK-4 is the higher-quality glass, yielding brighter images and high edge-to-edge sharpness.

Prism SystemsThe prism system turns what would otherwise be an upside-downimage right side up.

Roof-Prism SystemThe prisms overlap closely, allowing the objective lenses to lineup directly with the eyepiece. The result is a slim, streamlined shape in which the lenses and prisms thatmagnify and correct the image are in a straight line.

Porro-Prism SystemThe objective or front lensis offset from the eyepiece. Porroprisms provide excellent performanceand generally offer a wider field of view.

RainGuard® HDThe new improved, patented, hydrophobic(water-repellent) coating on whichcondensation from rain, fog or snowforms in much smaller droplets thanon standard coatings. Smaller dropletsscatter less light, which results in increasedlight transmission and a clearer image.

ResolutionResolution, or definition, is the ability of aspotting scope to distinguish fine detail andretain clarity.

ED Prime GlassED Prime Extra-Low Dispersion glass delivers amazing colorresolution and contrast, and virtually eliminates chromaticaberration and color-fringing to bring out the most distinctdetails possible in low-light conditions.

PC-3® Phase CoatingFound on the best scope, this chemical coating is appliedto the prisms to enhance resolution and contrast. Wouldnot provide an advantage on porro-prism models.

Ultra Wide Band CoatingAn anti-reflection coating process that is customized forevery lens element in the optical path, in order to allow themaximum amount of light from the front glass all the wayback to the eyepiece. The result? Optimum brightness andtrue color across the light spectrum.

Waterproof/FogproofSome scopes are sealed with O-rings and nitrogen purgedfor waterproof and fogproof protection. These models areable to withstand complete immersion and remain dry inside.

ARGON PURGING An improvement over traditional nitrogen purging, argon purging delivers the ultimate in long-term waterproof integrity. It’s longer lasting thanks to a larger atom size, provides superior protection against thermal shock and won’t bond with other elements like nitrogen.

ULTRA WIDE BAND COATING Using 60 layers of coatings on each lens, this revolutionary system harnesses and optimizes available light, boosting Elite riflescopes to their world-leading 99.73% light transmission per lens. Coated OpticsCoatings on lens surfaces reduce light loss and glaredue to reflection for a brighter, higher-contrast imagewith reduced eye strain. Bushnell® riflescopes arecoated with a microscopic film of magnesium fluoride.More coatings lead to better light transmission.

Types of Lens CoatingsCoated: A single layer on at least one lens surface.

Fully Coated: A single layer on all air-to-glass surfaces.

Multi-Coated: Multiple layers on all lens surfaces.

Fully Multi-Coated: Multiple layers on allair-to-glass surfaces.

Exit PupilThe size of the column of light that leaves the eyepieceof a scope. The larger the exit pupil, the brighter theimage. To determine the size, divide the objective lensdiameter by the power (a 4x 32 model has an exit pupilof 8mm).

Eye ReliefThe distance a scope can be held away from theeye and still present the full field of view. Bushnellriflescopes provide an extra margin of comfort andrecoil safety with extended eye relief and soft neopreneeyepiece guards.

Field of View (F.O.V.)The side-to-side measurement of the circular viewingfield or subject area. It is defined by the width in feetor meters of the area visible at 100 yards or meters.A wide field of view makes it easier to spot gameand track moving targets. Generally, the higher themagnification, the narrower the field of view.

Image QualityFor optimum image quality, it is important that theoptical system of a riflescope delivers as much lightas possible to the eye of the shooter. The lighter orbrighter the image, the sharper the resolution and theclearer the shot. The quality of the glass, lens design

and optical coatings all contribute to a riflescope’sability to manage light effectively. When selecting yourscope, consider magnification, objective lens size, exitpupil, resolution, field of view and eye relief.

MagnificationChoose a riflescope with the magnification or powerthat is appropriate for your particular application.

Low Power: (examples: 1.5–6x 32, 2–7x 32) Theseriflescopes are ideal at close rangeand for shooting moving targets. They provide the most effectivelight management and produce abrighter sight picture and widerfield of view – even in low-lightconditions and thick brush.

Medium Power: (examples:3–9x 40, 2.5–10x 50) Selectthese riflescopes for huntingbig game at medium range.

High Power: (examples: 6–18x 40,6–24x 40) These riflescopes arebest for target shooting whenthe target is motionless, and forvarmints and other small game.

Objective Lens SizeThe second number in the formula (4x 32) is thediameter of the objective or front lens in millimeters. The larger the objective lens, the more light thatenters the scope, and the brighter the image.

Ocular LensThe lens closest to your eye.

ParallaxA condition that occurs when the image is not focusedprecisely on the reticle plane. Parallax is visible as anapparent movement between the reticle and the targetwhen the shooter moves his head, or in extreme cases,as an out-of-focus image.

Precision AdjustmentsThe windage and elevation adjustments affect accuracy.Windage is the horizontal (left-to-right) adjustment, usually the side turret of the scope. Elevation is thevertical (up-and-down) adjustment, usually the top turretof the scope. Bushnell scopes feature 1/4 MOA (1/4” at100 yards) or finer windage and elevation adjustmentswith audible clicks for greater precision.

RainGuard® HDThis permanent, patented, hydrophobic and oleophobiclens coating prevents fogging by causing condensationfrom rain, sleet, snow or even your own breath to beadup into much smallerdroplets than onstandard coatings.Smaller dropletsscatter less light, which results in a clearer, brighter view. Now thehunter won’t miss the shotof a lifetime because of rainor accidentally breathing onhis eyepiece.

ResolutionResolution, or definition, is the ability of a scope todistinguish fine detail and retain clarity.

Rugged Body ConstructionBushnell riflescopes use a high-durability aluminumalloy. They are also anodize-finished and are sealed toprotect the inside from the elements. Each riflescopeis rustproof, virtually scratchproof and a beautifulcomplement to the most expensive firearm.

Sealed, Waterproof and FogproofBushnell riflescopes remain crystal clear in all types ofweather. All 1” and 30mm diameter riflescopes are notonly nitrogen purged to remove any vestige of internalmoisture, but they are also O-ring sealed to prevent theentry of dust or moisture.

How to choose. A quality riflescope is the key to a successful

day at the range or in the field. Riflescopes bring distant targets

and surrounding objects up close and personal, allowing safer,

more accurate shooting. They gather and utilize available light,

making it possible to shoot in lower light conditions and allowing

the hunter to hunt from dawn to dusk.

Pairing the correct riflescope with your gun and ammunition

will help you get the most out of each and every shot. Selecting

the optimum scope to fit your needs involves a number of

considerations, from mechanics and construction to image quality

and magnification. Keep in mind when and where you shoot

most often and choose a riflescope with features that best fit the

requirements of your particular sport.

77

RIFLESCOPES

Types of ReticlesA reticle is the crosshair or pattern placed in the eyepiece of thescope, which establishes the gun’s position on the target.

MechanicsThe inner workings of a scope have adirect affect on shooting accuracy. Asadjustments are made during sight-in,the cam tube, which holds the reticleand lenses in place, moves inside thescope. To stay on target and produce aquality image, this tube must be strongenough to absorb the impact of heavyrecoil during shooting and remain in place. When selecting your riflescope, look forprecision (positive) adjustments, point-of-impact consistency, reticle strengthand waterproof, fogproof and shockproofdurability. You’ll also want to considerweight, bulk and ergonomics, which areespecially important during long days inthe field.

DOA™ (Dead On Accurate™)ReticleIt dramatically extends your effective rangewith long-distance aiming points and helpsyou judge a buck’s trophy quality with RackBracket technology.

DOA 600 (For Centerfire Rifles)Aiming points from 100 to 600 yards in100-yard increments, compatible withtoday’s most popular deer hunting bullet/load combinations.

DOA 250 (For Muzzleloaders)Aiming points from 100 to 250 yards in50-yard increments with the most commonmagnum loadings for in-lines.

DOA 200 (For Slug Guns)Aiming points from 50 to 200 yards in50-yard increments based on the ballisticsof today’s high-performance slug loads.

DOA CrossbowAiming points from 20 to 60 yards in10-yard increments with most moderncrossbows exceeding 300 fps.

FireFly®

Developed by Bushnell engineers especiallyfor the lowest-light hunting situations, the patented FireFly reticle illuminates thecrosshairs after only a quick 10-secondflashlight charge. Unlike battery-poweredreticles, which often fail at the absoluteworst times, the FireFly will glow greenand you will see your crosshairs againstyour quarry.

Rack BracketReference lines at each aiming point helpyou judge whitetail and mule deer antlersize, and also estimate range. With thescope at full power, Rack Bracket linesmeasure 24” (common mule deer earwidth) at respective distances, with hashmarks at 17” (common whitetail ear width).

Light path through a Maksutov-CassegrainWith a unique meniscus-shaped front glass lens element, the Maksutov-Cassegrain optical design has a strong heritage in astronomy. Utilizing a spherically curved front lens element in conjunction with a similarly curved primary mirror, this incredible design provides remarkably sharp images in a compact folded-light path package. The total optical system provides a focal length much longer than the actual optical tube body length to yield an awesome scope image, yet compact enough to take out in the backyard or on the road. This advanced design has typically been found only on many higher-end systems often used by professionals.

Barlow LensAn auxiliary lens that increases the power by a factor. For example, a 2x Barlow doubles the magnificationof the telescope.

Erecting LensLens used with a refractor telescope when viewingland-based objects to correct the normally upside-down image provided by an astronomical telescope.

FinderscopeOn most astronomical telescopes a lower-poweredfinderscope with a widerfield of view lets the userquickly locate the objectto be viewed and aim thehigh-magnification maintelescope.

Focal LengthThe measured light path of the optical system (tubelength), typically measured in millimeters. Telescopesare listed as 900 x 4.5” or 750 x 60mm. The firstnumber refers to the focal length of the telescope.

Focusing KnobControls the rack and pinion focusing system.Permits smooth movement of the eyepiece forprecise, sharp images.

Objective Lens Size (or Aperture)The second number in the formula (900mm x 4.5”)is the diameter of the objective lens or mirror ininches or millimeters. The aperture relates directlyto how bright images will appear and how muchdetail is revealed. The larger the objective lens, thebetter. The size of the telescope’s objective lens,or aperture, limits the amount of power that can beused effectively. As the magnification of an objectincreases, the brightness of the image decreases. This is because the light gathered by the telescope isbeing spread over a larger area. Aperture also limitsthe clarity of an image at increased magnification. When magnified beyond an aperture’s recommendedpower, the image dims and becomes fuzzy.

Magnification (Power)With a 100x telescope, the object being viewedappears to be 100 timescloser than you would seeit with the unaided eye. Themagnification of a telescopeis determined by dividingits focal length by the focallength of the eyepiecebeing used. For example,a 500mm telescope witha 5mm eyepiece wouldmagnify objects 100x.

Note: Magnification is calculated magnification. Low power is recommended for most viewing conditions.

ResolutionResolution, or definition, is the ability of a telescopeto distinguish fine detail and retain clarity.

Refractor: An optical system that utilizes a seriesof glass lenses to refract or bend the light from adistant object such that it can be focused to a pointand magnified by an eyepiece. Popularized by Galileoin the 17th century, it is sometimes referred to as aGalilean refractor.

Reflector: The optical system in a reflector uses aprimary mirror to reflect the light from a distant objectsuch that it can be focused to a point and magnifiedby an eyepiece. Popularized by Sir Isaac Newton inthe 17th century, it is sometimes referred to as aNewtonian reflector.

Maksutov-Cassegrain: A design that utilizes aspherically curved front lens element in conjunctionwith a similarly curved primary mirror. Thisconfiguration provides incredibly sharp images in acompact folded–light path package. The total opticalsystem provides a focal length much longer than theactual optical tube body length.

How to choose. When selecting a telescope, consider which target objects you plan to explore, as well as your level of

experience. For viewing most night sky objects, you’ll want a telescope with as much aperture as possible. Keep in mind that as

the size of the objective lens or mirror increases, so does the size of the telescope. So be sure to select a telescope that isn’t

too heavy to manage or too complicated for you to set up especially if portability is a necessity.

EyepiecesLower-power eyepieces provide a wider field of view and a brighter image, makingthem ideal for viewing the full moon and planets, star clusters, nebulae andconstellations. To focus in on the finer details of the moon and planets such asmountains, ridges and craters, use an eyepiece with higher magnification.

“Go To” Computerized Star LocatorThis exciting feature utilizes an onboard computer and advanced motorizedtechnology to allow you to quickly locate and automatically follow over 20,000preprogrammed astronomical objects with the touch of a button. Educationaldescriptions of each object are also provided.

Real Voice Output™Talking telescope describes the night sky with the touch of a button in a realhuman voice – an interactive and educational way to explore the heavens.

ReflectorsReflectors feature larger apertures for a wide rangeof viewing options at an affordable price. Designedwith the eyepiece located at the top of the tube, reflectors are more comfortable to use for viewingnight sky objects such as nebulae, the moon, planetsand galaxies. Reflectors tend to be heavier and largerthan refractors.

RefractorsRefractors are less affected by atmospheric instabilities, making them perfect for observing the moonand planets. Perfect for first-time and noviceastronomers, small refractors are lightweight, portable and require very little maintenance. And, ifyou’re interested in viewing both land and celestialobjects, refractors are equipped for both uses.

Sky Tour™ Talking HandsetsThe Sky Tour talking handsets included with our new Voyager® series telescopesare the ultimate way to learn the lay of the universe. While the voice highlights yourchoice of constellations, planets, mythology or amazing facts (in English, Spanishand French), the telescope’s Illuminated Smart Mount lights up to get you dialedin on the celestial object. The red LED display and buttons are illuminated for easynighttime use. It’s the ultimate way to keep first-time telescope users and amateurastronomy enthusiasts engaged, entertained and learning.

MountsThere are two basic types of telescopemounts, the altitude-azimuth (or altaz)and the equatorial. Altaz mounts are theeasiest to maneuver and are ideal for first-time astronomers.

Illuminated Smart MountAllows precise left to right and up anddown motion along with illuminated dialsfor navigating the night sky.

Kinematic MountUndoubtedly the most precise, yet simpletelescope mount in years, this high-precisionaltaz mount uses the principle that itrequires three points to form a plane.Designed for optimum shape, the kinematicmount features three points of contact inboth horizontal and vertical planes.

How Bushnell® Rangefinders Work.Bushnell’s rangefinders use an invisible, eye-safe Class 1 laser beam (as classified bythe FDA), which is “bounced” off distant objects with the press of a button. Then, therangefinder’s high-speed digital clock measures the time it takes for the laser beam to reachthe target and return to the unit. Next, using advanced digital electronics, the rangefinderinstantly calculates the distance within +/- 1 yard and shows the range in either yards ormeters on a through-the-lens display. The entire process is so fast that less than a secondelapses between the time you press the button to generate a laser beam to the time theexact range to your target is displayed.

Reflectivity of Target Types.Because rangefinders “bounce” a laser beam off the target in order to take a measurement, their range is partially determined by the reflectivity of the target. In other words, hardor “reflective” targets – such as a rock cliff or semi-truck – can be measured at greaterdistances than soft surface targets – such as a deer. Ranges for moderately reflective targetsand trees, fall somewhere in the middle. Most experienced hunters will use their rangefinderto frequently estimate ranges to near and distant landmarks before they actually encounter agame animal. By pre-measuring ranges to spots where a game animal is likely to appear, theycan concentrate on making an accurate shot when the moment of truth arrives.

Extreme. Speed. Precision. (E.S.P.)™Optimizes measurement accuracy based on targetconditions. The laser analyzes multiple individualmeasurements to the targetand displays the ideal strength.E.S.P. automatically assessesany target variations that may disrupt the laser andimproves the measurement up to 1/2 yard accuracyfrom 5-125 yards. When this occurs, display precisionis refined to 1/10th yard readout.

Variable Sight-In (VSI)™ FeatureThis Rifle Mode feature allows youto set your holdover/bullet-dropinformation for your rifle’s zero – selectbetween 100, 150, 200 and 300-yardsight-in distances for deadly accurate information atthe push of a button. Measurements can be displayedin MOA or inches, and VSI also provides shot angleinformation from -90° to +90°.

Vivid Display Technology (VDT)™Created specifically forour premium rangefinder, this optical enhancementdramatically improves contrast, clarity and light transmission, whileincreasing the brightness of digital readout informationfor rapid, positive identification in all lighting conditions. The best of heads-up projection displays.

Selective Targeting Modes:

Rain – This feature compensates for precipitation to guarantee anaccurate distance measurement through rain or snow.

Reflector – This feature increases the maximum measurement rangefor most highly reflective objects and is built into all of our rangefinders.

Scan – SCAN across the course while viewing acontinuously updated display of the distance betweenyou and your target.

BullsEye™ – Geared for close-range use, this modeacquires the distances of small targets and game withoutinadvertently measuring background target distances. When more than one object is acquired, the closer of thetwo objects is shown on the display.

See more with our exclusive square beam technology. Edge to edge, no flashlight in the world

today delivers a comparable level of radiant intensity and

consistency of brightness. Using patented technology that

produces a perfectly uniform, square, pattern of light, our

HD Torch completely illuminates every inch of its range

with a bright, clean light offering superior image definition.

Unlike conventional circular flashlight beams, it emits no

irregular “blobs” of light and prevents shadows. Thus, it

is the perfect tool for bloodtrailing or locating lost items

using the grid/quadrant search method. It can light up an

entire wall without moving the beam side to side and is

the optimum choice for reading as well. The 165-lumen

output lasts for up to 1.5 hours on its two

3-volt lithium batteries (included).

NIGHT VISION

113

Digital Night VisionBushnell Digital Night Vision products collect existing light through the objective lens, which is then processed through a CCD or CMOS digital image sensor which convertslight into an electronic signal – similar to the ones commonly used in digital cameras, but with greater sensitivity extending into the infrared range. After additionalprocessing, the digital image is then transferred to a “near eye” LCD micro-displayfor you to view. The image quality is comparable to Gen 2 or higher night vision unitsthat use conventional analog image intensifier technology (digital night vision doesnot use the “Gen _” classification system). Another advantage offered by digital nightvision technology is video output capability, allowing real-time transmission to videocamcorders, TV monitors or computers.

Image-Intensified Night VisionAn optical device comprised of high-quality, image-intensifier tubes and optics thatamplify existing light to allow you to see in conditions too dark for the naked eye.

How Does It Work?1. Available light (energy) is collected by the objective lens and focused on

the image intensifier.2. Inside the intensifier, a photocathode is “excited” by the light and converts

the energy into electrons.3. The electrons accelerate across an electrostatic field inside the intensifier

and strike a phosphor screen (like a monochrome TV screen), which emitsan image that you can see. This acceleration of electrons provides gainand enhances the image.

Types of Bushnell Night VisionGeneration 1 (Analog): Does not require an active infrared light source.Instead it amplifies available ambient light.Digital: An infrared sensitive digital sensor and LCD display producehigher viewing quality than analog technology.Night Vision Monocular: A night vision device for use with one eye.

Field of ViewThe width of the field visible through the night vision systemat a distance of 100 yards or meters.

Eyepiece FocusUsed to match your night vision scope to your specific eyesight.

Image Intensifier or Intensifier TubeThe active component in an analog night vision system thatamplifies light and presents a usable image.

Infrared (IR) IlluminatorProvides a light source for the system to amplify, yielding enhancedimages in very low-light conditions such as caves, where no ambient lightis available for amplification.

Objective LensCollects all available light and focuses it on the image intensifier. It also providesimage magnification. The best objective lenses are high-speed (f2 or faster) and arecoated for maximum efficiency in the near-infrared bandwidth.

Phosphor ScreenPositioned at the back of the intensifier tube, the green phosphor screen renders avisible night vision image. The human eye is most sensitive to green contrasts.

PhotocathodeConverts light (photon energy) into electrons (electrical energy), which arethen amplified in the intensifier. The objective lens focuses available light onthe photo-electric surface of the photocathode, which is excited and passeselectrons within the tube.

ResolutionA measure of the ability to render and display a detailed image. Image-intensifierresolution remains constant and is expressed as the maximum number of linepairs per millimeter (lp/mm) that can be discerned when a black-and-white stripepattern is focused on the photocathode.

SEIZE THE

THE BUSHNELL IMAGEVIEW DIFFERENCEThe lenses on typical digital cameras simply do not provide enough magnification todeliver a real close-up view of distant subjects. Blowing up the image (cropping andenlarging) using computer software simulates a more powerful lens, but with a greatreduction in quality. Our ImageView digital imaging binoculars capture the image throughtheir 8x camera optics. This means your photo subjects will actually appear eight timescloser (not possible with a “3x” or “5x” zoom camera lens), and will be much sharperthan what you get by trying to “blow up” part of the photo from a regular digital camera. The comparison above shows the dramatic difference.

Digital Imaging SensorsThese are silicon chips consisting of millions of tiny photo diodes, which convertlight into an electronic signal. A CMOS sensor is used in Bushnell® imaging products.

File Compression or “Quality”In addition to high- and low-resolution settings, many digital cameras provide optionsfor selecting the amount of file compression applied when photos are stored in memory.Higher-quality settings use less compression, but take up more storage space.

Flash MemoryFlash memory is “non-volatile,” meaning it retains the photo files and user settingseven if the power source is removed for a long period of time. Many cameras haveelectronic components that preserve the memory contents for a few minutes to allowtime to change batteries. However, it’s always wise to download photos beforechanging batteries or storing the camera away if you are using internal memory.

InterpolationA method of increasing the number of pixels in an image after it is photographed. The pixels actually captured by the camera’s sensor are rapidly analyzed by softwarethat creates and adds new similar pixels to the photo file. Some Bushnell imagingoptics provide user options for higher interpolated resolution settings.

Pixels and MegapixelsPixels are the tiny squares of color – like dots on a newspaper photo or grains on aphotographic print – that make up a digital image. The higher the pixel count, thehigher the photographic resolution. A megapixel (MP) equals one million pixels.

Resolution and File SizeThe number of pixels used to produce a digital photo is the primary factor thatdetermines resolution, or ability to reproduce fine detail. More pixels equal higherresolution and a larger data file.

Storage Cards: Digital “Film”These are small removable “flash” memory devices used to hold image data froma digital camera, reducing or eliminating the need for high-capacity internal memory. All Bushnell digital imaging optics have a slot for an SD (Secure Digital) card, themost common type currently used.

Sync FocusNow on our ImageView® spotting scope and Instant Replay™ binoculars, theSync Focus feature is a parallel focus system that sharpens the digital image andthe image through the scopes or binos optics simultaneously. The synchronizedlight path also permits the user to switch between viewing through the camera’sLCD and the scope’s or binocular’s eyepiece.

USB Mass StorageCameras with USB mass storage don’t need a driver for Windows XP or Vista.Connect the camera to your PC and it will be identified as a “Removable Disk,”just as if it were an external hard drive. Your photo files are stored in a folder on this“disk,” and can be copied or moved to the location of your choice or opened directlyfrom the camera within your photo software.

Camera SettingsThe “default” automatic setting on digital cameras works fine in most situations, but some cameras will also let the user override “auto” and adjust one or moreof the following if necessary or preferred:EV (Exposure Value): Also known as exposure compensation. Allows settingdeliberate under or overexposure by a fine amount, such as “+1.5 EV” (one anda half steps overexposed).ISO (Sensitivity): As with film, low ISO numbers (100–200) will produce the highestquality but require the most light. Higher ISO settings will allow photos in low lightwithout flash, or faster shutter speeds to stop action, but with increasingly noticeabledigital “noise.”White Balance: Auto white balance identifies a white reference point (wall, clouds, etc.) in a scene and applies overall color correction if needed, so whites retain a neutralappearance. If this produces poor results, presets for daylight, cloudy, tungsten andfluorescent lighting are often available.

Special FeaturesSelf Timer: When selected, the photo is taken following a short delay after theshutter button is pressed. Used to prevent camera shake or to include yourselfin the photo.Sequential Shot: Shoots a quick burst of multiple frames (usually 3–5 in a row)to increase chances of capturing the action.Movie Mode: Allows the camera to shoot and play back short video clips. These areusually stored in the common “avi” format and can be played on any computer withWindows Media Player, QuickTime or other software.
