Commodore Mike Smith
November 2014
Here we are November 2014! Long way from
starting the process of running the chairs and represent-ing BRYC from Fleet Captain, Secretary, R/C, V/C to
Commodore. I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of
the best people around the bay; I may be bias but I firmly believe that the Commodores and First Ladies of
2014 are the best of the best! I would like to thank my Fleet Captain Ted Par-
ker and Lady Chris for all of their tireless efforts that
they put forth for our club from Cruises, to entertainment, to the up-coming NY City trip the list goes on and on – our friendship started many years ago and
only continues to flourish. Michelle and I thank you and love you both. To our friends that have supported us here at BRYC you all know who
you are, “thank you” for your friend-ship. Patti Pearce you are one out-
standing lady, you have always jumped
in to make the club stand out for each event/holiday. You also put on one
heck of a Super Raft off, your generosi-ty and kindness to the club never goes
unnoticed we all thank you for all that
you do. We started off this year with a
Princess and came home with the Queen! To Queen Katie, you have made my year as Commodore a wonderful
and memorable one. You are truly a lovely young lady and represent yourself as Queen with such honor. Michelle and I enjoyed spending time with you over
the Ball and Opening Season. Michelle and I wish you success in everything
you do. To my First Lady Michelle, I would like to thank you for your continued
love and support over the years, as this would not have been possible. Now it is time for the next chapter in our lives, I love you.
To the members of BRYC, it really has been a true pleasure represent-
ing our Club around the Bay from Balls, Openings, special events that have tak-en place at our sister-clubs so many memories that will
last a lifetime. As I finish my tenure as Commodore, I would like to remind the members of BRYC that this is
your club and you do have a voice. Try not to let oth-
ers personal agenda’s reflect your thoughts, visions and voice. With that farewell, it’s been a pleasure to have
met and enjoyed your company over the years.

November 2014
November has snuck up on us and be-fore you know it everyone will be celebrating Thanksgiving with family and friends. Of course right after that will be the countdown to Christmas. Speaking of Christmas, don’t forget the tree trimming party on Dec 12, 2014 at 7PM. Bring an ornament to hang on
the tree.
November is a pretty busy month at the club. Nov. 7 is officer elections and on November 21 is the installation of officers, followed by the Princess pageant and the crowning of the new princess. After installa-tion and once the Princess crowning is over
the bell will be rung. I am sure everyone knows what that means…….
November 22nd is the last clean up of the year. This includes winterization of the piers. If you are in need of hours please come out and help the club get the work
done.
November 26th is the Pre-Thanksgiving happy hour. Club will be opened at 6pm.
Monica and I wish you and your family a very Happy Thanks-giving!
See you around the club,
~ V/C Wade Graham

November 2014 Final, Final Greetings from the Rear Commodore: Well; this is it. My final article. Sorry but I don't think that I can do this in one page. As you've probably heard by now, I have decided not to continue to "run the line" and not move up to Vice Commodore next year. There is a myriad of reasons for this and it was a very pains-taking and difficult decision. Ultimately, I had to make the decision that was not only the best for me and my family, but one that was in the best interest of the Club and I think it is the right thing to do at this time for all concerned. But more about that later... When Miss Bessie passed away last year I felt a shadow cross my heart. She was one of a kind. I remember every Friday night bounding down the steps and seeing her across the room sitting at a table in the lounge. I would walk over to say hi and she would grab my face with both hands and kiss me saying something like "You are such a dear sweet boy". She was one of very few people that could still make me feel like a kid at 50 years old and it was endearing. She once beat me in a poker tournament. For three hours, hand after hand, she pretended that she didn't know what she was doing while she strategically disassembled every player at the table. We all knew she was pretending, and she knew we knew, but she did it anyway and it was funny. I truly miss her. I had a trial the day of her funeral and could not make it and I regret that. I hope Mr. Andy understands. Most of you probably never knew or don't remember Al Cald-well. He was a quiet unassuming guy. My first year at the club his boat was right behind mine on C pier. We would often find ourselves sitting in our chairs on the pier talking about anything and everything, but mostly complaining about our boats and the state of the world. Just about every Friday night, regardless of how crowded it was, Al would somehow eventually find a seat at the bar. When he did he would wave me over and buy me a drink. Again we would share a few minutes talking about miscellaneous stuff. When boating season end-ed last year I stopped seeing him around the Club. I just assumed he was busy and didn't think much of it. Around January I heard he died from pancreatic cancer. I don't know a whole lot about this particular type of cancer, but my limited understanding is that it is a slow painful disease that takes a long time to eventually cause death. In all our
7
talks, Al never once mentioned having cancer and I'll never know why. I can only guess that he didn't want to burden me with it. I really en-joyed my time with him. Running my law firm is an all encompassing endeavor. Most days I am lucky if I only feel like having a heart attack and manage not to rip my own head off. Taking on the additional responsibilities at the Club often left me in the position of having to choose whether to keep up with my real job or keep up with the Club business. Often there simply was not enough time for both, not to mention trying to make time for all the family activities and obligations. Since I had mentioned in my last article that the Club business is non-income producing, the choice was obvious. Also, I agonized over missing football, soccer games and concerts of my kids. You can't replace that stuff and once it's gone, it's gone. I did the best I could with the time that I had for the Club, but I feel that at this juncture, it is in the best interest of both me and the Club if I step aside as my sporadic involvement does not fulfill the requirements of the office and the membership deserves bet-ter representation. The club will be in good hands the next two years. Both Wade and Henry are really decent people. I have spent a lot of time with them, both regarding Club business and personally, and can attest that they genuinely have the Club's best interest at heart and work very hard and sacrifice both time and money to benefit the membership. We are lucky to have them. I feel the same about our current Commo-dore Mike. I have seen the sacrific-es he has made and how he has represented the Club around the bay and think he deserves some acknowledgement for that. The Club has been a great experience for both me and my family. We have grown close to many other members and enjoy many of the events the Club has to offer. For those reasons, I will still be around as a member and hope that the friendships and relationships I have forged while being here will not be effected by this decision. I sincerely wish the new Board and Bridge the very best and will continue to assist them in any way to keep the Club moving forward. See You Around; Jim Otte; Rear Commodore (RET)

The LAX has had an exciting Fall sea-son! The children’s Halloween Party and Trunk or Treat on October 25th was a great opportuni-ty for the children to enjoy Bush River. Thank you to Karissa Otte for heading up this activity which always brings a lot of smiles to our
youngest members. Thanks to all of the generous members who came out to bring the children goodies at the Trunk-or-Treat too! We are so lucky to have Katie Lindsay as our beautiful Queen of the Chesapeake this year. She is so energetic, charming, and positive at all of the events around the Bay especially the various openings and balls of our sister clubs. We have had two young ladies apply to be the princess representing Bush River Yacht Club next year. Ashley Lindsay and Julianna Hamilton are both lovely and it will be difficult for our judges! We will have the princess pageant to choose our representative and honor them both at the Cocktail Party immediately following the In-stallation of the officers on November 21st. This takes place after the Gen-eral Membership Meeting at 7PM. We will need donations of appetizers for this event. The new bridge will be elected on November 7th. In December, the Children’s Christmas party is always a hit. This year it will be held on December 13th. We are usually very fortunate to have Santa and even Mrs. Santa come and hand out gifts. The adult Christmas Tree Trimming Party is on Friday evening, December 12th. The LAX will again ask members to be generous to those less for-tunate. Karissa Otte will provide a list of needs for young people who are residents at Sheppard Pratt Hospital. They will be spending the holidays at the hospital so we urge all members to be generous. We will let those who are lonely know that someone does care. Again, we thank our mem-bers for all that they do and we will have this list as soon as possible. The LAX is searching for a Vice-President and Concessions Chair. Thanks so much to Kim Piercy and Chris Parker for their work this year. The Sick and Welfare position has been accepted by Debbie Sanford. We thank Debbie for helping us to support those club members experiencing difficulties. This means a great deal to our members. Hope that your November is a special time for family and friends as we give Thanks for all our blessings. I feel blessed by the friendships that have been made at the Bush River Yacht Club! Peace,
Ginger Bahr
