Buschtrommel VII

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. (Isaiah 60, 1)

Blessing

“Arise!” An inner voice told me – “arise”. I didn’t know if I was sitting or lying, I didn’t know at all where I was. At last I realized that I was inside my car, but everything was upside down. Where was the bottom, where was the top and what has happened? The memory came back soon: I had an accident with my car on this steep, from the rain very slippery mud road where the car had turned over. From afar I heard an excited voice: “Mzungo, oh Mzungo!” About a dozen helping hands reached through the broken window and carefully pulled me through the broken window of the damaged car. The men who had hurried up to my car cautiously tried to put me on my feet. They were very glad that I was alive, which istn’t always the case here in Uganda. A policecar came and six policemen in uniform looked after me and my belongings. The officer himself took me to the nearest hospital in Entebbe and his colleagues arranged that my car was taken to the police station. Only three weeks later the same policemen were involved in an accident an fourr of them were killed. I still can’t believe it and I realize how fragile life is here in Uganda. That is why I understand the people much better in their prayer: “Thank you, Lord, for the gift of my life!”

Dear friends,

I am staying at home a lot to recover from the shock, the spin-traumatic, the concussion and the cut wounds. Many people who, had learned about my accident, prayed for me, rang me, wrote to me and encouraged me. I am still overwhelmed from the great sympathy and thank everybody from all of my heart! When the prisoners heard about my accident some of them started weeping. They were desperate and worried a lot – for me personally as well as if I could continue my work which is so important for them. The leader of the Upper Prison in Kampala, O/C Magumo came to see me at my home up on “my mountain”. When he saw in which condition the road is which is leading up to my house he was shocked and he forbid me to drive on it any longer. I didn’t know up to that day that he thought of me as being part of his staff. Without a car it is really difficult, in fact impossilbe to continue my work. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to collect the money for a pick up so far – but we don’t give up! If you have got it on your heart to support us for this, please make a clear notice on the remittance. You can see in the picture what we need the pick up for. We would like to care for all the inmates of the childrens’ house, the youth prison and the main prison in Kampala. And there are many people (in the Upper Prison for example 3000) we deliver a lot of relief supplies. A pick up is very helpful for that I want to thank all of you from all of my heart who have supported us or are supporting us As we are now recognized as a charity we can give you a receipt. So if you want a tax reductible let us know by giving us your full address.

Life in Uganda is not only fragile but also intensive. Before my car accident we had been very active (and we will soon be active again!) We visited

The children’s house

Christine is the happy owner of the most wonderful black coloured dolly which a friendly lady gave to me during my trip in Germany. She had owned the doll for many years an now gave away this piece of rememberence to make a little girl in Uganda happy. That was really great. Christine was really very happy even though you can’t really see it in this photo. This little girl wasn’t able to look at me when I took the photo. She was thrown into the latrine by her mother because she

didn’t want to have this child any more. Neighbours rescued her and brought her to the police. Since then Christine has had a problem especially with women. She doesn’t trust them, doesn’t look at them and runs away when one comes close to her. I do understand her! Christine is one of the 148 children at the age of 2 to 12 years in the children`s section of the prison in Kampala – all of them are children who nobody wants to have. Of course government tries to find another place for them in one of the families who are related to them, but mostly nobody takes them. They can’t be just left in the streets that is why government has to look after these little ones. There are also children who were born in prison and who can only stay with their mothers for two years. Then they are put in this kind of “orphanage”.

We try to alleviate the hardship and our aim is to find sponsors for them. We see them as often as possible which depends on the permittance to go there. The most important task is to tell them about their wonderful creator, who has always wanted and loved them, and give them security as well as give them support in their material needs. We could, for example, bring them the clothes which we collected at the last visit in Gemany. And we are praying for a “House for Healing”, which is part of our vision, where we want to care for these youngsters with their broken hearts.

Painting class in prison

It obviously was the first time that a painting class was offered in a Ugandan

prison. I have no idea what the leader of the prison thought when I asked him if we could have an exhibition with the pictures. He looked as if he had eaten a lemon, mumbled somthing in Luganda, which I couldn’t understand, but I was sure that at the end I understood: “Yes, alright!” The men were on fire from the very beginning, and Evelyn, our volunteer and artist, did not only lead the course but also discovered many talents. You can see some of the results in the photos. I bought three pictures and had them

framed – just wonderful!

During the painting lessons, which took place over several weeks, we often had the chance to preach the gospel to the men and to talk to them. We

asked some of them how and what they felt and also asked them about the meaning of the subject they were painting. All of them felt well because they didn’t think of what they had done, the sentence or the circumstances in the prison but were fully concentrated on the colours and leading the brush. Most of the subjects had to do with their “homes” where there were cows or rabbits. But we also found Jesus on the cross painted by an inmate who hadn’t known about the meaning of the cross. There also was a broken heart

which was one of the pictures I bought. The big crack reminded me that we want to fill the gap – also in the broken hearts!

By the way,

prison are not money but soap! I will tell you more about that in my next bush drum, so don’t miss it. I will also tell you more about the conditions in prison. They are still very bad in Upper Prison because the old building is totally overcrowded. It was built for 600 inmates but in the meantime there are 3000 men from 17 to 67. So many of them can’t lie down to sleep at night because they can’t find a space. They sit or squat and move their bodies from one side to the other to find some relaxation. The release of 500 inmates, which had been planned, hasn’t taken place yet. Nearly every day yout can find articles in the press about intolerable conditions but so far nothing has happened. Now I’d like to introduce Evelyn to you who has been such a great blessing to all inmates of Upper Prison.

Evelyn Pichler

My name is Evelyn Pichler from Klagenfurt at the Wörthersee which is in the sunny south of Austria and I will be 60 soon. I have got 2 children, my daughter Nina, 26, and my son Markus, 33. Markus is married and has got 2 children at the age of 3 and 1. Through God’s guidance I travelled on 2nd April from Istanbul to Uganda together with Erika to be her first volunteer. I got to know her through two trips to Uganda. Our wonderfull creator has given me special artistic giftings and called me in his kingdom as a painter. By the way, you can look at some of my pictures as well as a video from the opening of an exhibition on 8th March 2012 under http://www.woche.at/klagenfurt/kultur/vernissage-evelyn-pichler-reiseimpressionen-d72207.html You can also buy the paintings. Here in Uganda the door of Upper Prison opened for me to minister to the prisoners through art. As you could already read from Erika I could offer a painting class with an exhibition at the end. The men eagerly worked on the

pictures and God’s acting on them was just wonderful and amazing and I am so grateful for this and the great time which I could have here together with Erika. Evelyn Pichler, artist

Visit at the project for the blind

The project for the blind run by mama Edith in Jinja has got new equipment: a sewing machine could be bought where the young blind women can learn sewing. Moreover mama Edith, who lost her sight at the age of 5, teaches the young people weaving mats and cooking. They had even rehearsed some traditional dances and songs to welcome us. When we visited them we

could hand over the donations which we were given for this project. Many thanks for them!

The people who work for us introduce themselves. Today:

My name is Helga Erberich. I have been widowed for some time and I have two grown up children and three grandchildren who live further away. I used to work as an accountant. I got to know Erika at my visit to Uganda in 2010. As I was looking for a new task and as I had already built a relationship to Uganda through visits to missionaries in this country I am happy to be the treasurer of “Fill in the Gap”. I will try to do this task to my very best.

Helga Erberich, treasurer Dear friends, without our staff we coulcn’t do our ministry. That is why it is important for us that everybody knows who is serving us with his/her giftings. Helga Erberich isn’t only our treasurer but she als is a treasure! Many thanks to all our volunteers and our staff. They will introduce themselves in the next edition.

We are looking for a sponsor

for Herbert Ahimbisibwe. Herbert is a former policemen and got a death sentence which was changed into “for life”. He is 41, married and has got 4 children between 11 and 18. He has been in Upper Prison for 10 years. He met Jesus while he was in the part for the men with a death sentence and received forgiveness and new life in Jesus. Herbert is not only a leader of the Anglican Church and trained bible teacher but also a strong believer, excellent councellor, adviser and intercessor. His service in prison is sometimes of more importance than ours outside.

Herbert’s family live far away in the west of Uganda and can’t visit and support him. That is why we are looking for a sponsor that fhis helpful man can get some soap for washing and shaving. Usually we support all inmates and not single people in prison from the donations we get. That is why we look for a sponsor for Herbert who also supports him in prayer. 20 Euros per months would be enough to help him. It needn’t be a single person to support him, it could also be a house group. If you have got it on the heart to support Herbert, please send an e-mail to me. We can give you more information about Herbert if you wish.

At last…

after all this serious information something to laugh at:: Some weeks ago we supported a football championship at Upper Prison where ten team took part. The team “Liverpool, coached by Robert, won. They got a cup as well as a goat. The men, who usually don’t get meat for their meals, were so happy, but in the end they didn’t kill it – Musisi had chosen it because she was very fat – she was pregnant. The goat was given back and 15 kg of meat were bought for the men. The goat expects twins – so fruitful is our service. More gaps could be filled at the youth prison. We are lucky that there are no more bed bugs, but one day the provider for the food “forgot” to deliver maize porridge (posho). So the kids didn’t have any food. “Fill in the Gap Intl” could help thanks your donations and give food to all of them. From this example we can learn

We can only collectively fill the gap!

We could also help in the prison of Nakasongola, especially the women with hygiene articles and the babies. We could also provide extra food for the prisons we are visiting as well as writing book and pens, tea, sugar and special food, medicine and blankets for the seriously ill. So much is happening that it would fill another bush drum – I will wait untill August/ September for more.
