HOMEBUSH CELEBRATES MULTICULTURISM

Our Multicultural day celebration was again held at Homebush BHS to showcase the diversity, harmony and tolerance of our school commu-nity. The day began with an assembly, which was opened by the iconic international flag march led by the school’s drum corp.

Also in attendance were distinguished guest speakers from the DEC and from the political arena who were entertained with a variety of cultural performances, which were absolutely riveting.

The day continued in the hall with performances that ranged from eastern, western classical piano pieces, Indian classical drums and flutes to beat boxing battles, cultural Indian dancing and also bands from our very own school. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Sadly I begin this edition of the Bush Bulletin with a message from Adam Lees’ father. Mr Lees expressed the following:

John,

Can you please accept my thanks and pass it on to all of the Homebush Boys students & staff who attended or who offered their support for Adam Lees. It was a special moment to see all of his peers on his final celebration.

Please ask all students to stay safe and to strive to achieve their goals and dreams..... While having fun!!

Thank-you for everything from the entire Lees family.

As you would be aware we lost Adam Lees late in June and Mr Khurshed wrote a very fit-ting memorial about him which can still be found on our school website.

Curriculum MattersParent Teacher Evenings

I would like to thank all of our parents who have attended our three Parent Teacher Evenings. Our P & C Meetings in Term 2 raised some issues about these evenings. We have tried to heed some of this advice and trialled having all teachers on the ground level of Building A. We have uploaded the Parent Booking Sheets earlier and we have also created more signs to indicate faculties and staff members. We hope these improvements have assisted.

CAPA Evening

Our Creative Arts and Performing Arts faculty recently held a brilliant showcase of Year 7-11 students Visual Art compositions and Musical items. This intimate evening was coordinated by Mr Albertson and the entire CAPA faculty ensured that it was a highly successful event. Numbers on the night had increased by at 20% on last year’s atten-dance. Well done Mr Albertson, Mr Attwood and the CAPA staff and students.

A good roll up attended our exhibition opening at CAPA night

Community MattersDrum Corp

Our Drum Corps continue to be brilliant representatives for our school. Although it was quite a while back at the start of this term the boys under the leadership of Zac Foster, Mr Sculthorpe and Ms Brown marched and performed in the Annual Anzac Day Commemoration in the city. The boys were organised and were brilliant ambassadors for the school on the day. We gained great coverage on the ABC but what was most important was that the RSL were truly grateful for our attendance and participation once again in the city.

The Drum Corp will next perform at the Sandakan Ceremony in Bur-wood Park and at Concord Repatriation Hospital on Remembrance Day.

Citizenship Ceremonies

Many of our SRC and Prefects volunteer at the Burwood Council and Strathfield Council Citizenship Ceremonies. They perform differing roles on the evenings but they always do so with aplomb. I must thank Ms Singh and Ms Kamil who ensure we are always represented so ably in the wider community.

Multicultural Day

Multicultural Day was an extraordinary success again this year. Under the guidance of Ms Kumaralingam and Ms Singh our SRC, Prefect body and our Multicultural Day team put on a gang busters show which brought the house down. There is a further report about the day in this bulletin for you to read.

DiscoI would like to congratulate the Year 12 boys who coordinated the very successful Junior Disco at Burwood Girls High School in June. The attendance of our students saw an increase and the enthusiasm of our Year 12 boys to get our juniors onto the dance floor and to meet the girls was to be commended. As for the boys 1970’s costumes I will reserve judgement!

IFTAROur Annual IFTAR dinner was held in late June. The purpose of this event is to highlight to all in our community the importance of the period of Ramadan to our Muslim community. Once again a group of staff and student volunteers ensured that nearly four hundred people were not only fed but had a great insight into this event. Congratulations Mr Abbou for your coordination of this event.

Red Shield Appeal Raises $32,000This year many of our local schools took part in the Red Shield Appeal. Nearly thirty of our boys volunteered over the two day period of collection. I am very proud and pleased to announce that all schools in our area raised over $32,000 on the day. Our boys were thrilled recently to have The Hon Craig Laundy to visit and to celebrate with our many volunteers.

Volunteers at Meals on Wheels, Chalmers Road Special School and St Anne’s Primary SchoolIt probably goes unnoticed but all of our Year 9 boys volunteer to support our local Meals on Wheels program with the Strathfield Council. Each Friday four of our boys give up half their day to assist with the distribution of these meals.

About twice a term around 10 of our lads attend Chalmers Road Special School where they assist students with socialisation skill development. Many of the students at Chalmers Road have poor coordination and communication skills. Our boys assist with teaching them how to ride bikes, use play equipment and sometimes just act as a sounding board as the students show our boys some of their work from class. Congratulations guys.

A small band of boys also visit St Anne’s Primary School where they do reading and a variety of other activities with the students there. I recently met with their Principal at St Anne’s and he could not speak more highly of our students efforts.

OvalWork will commence in Term 3 on the back oval. Thanks to the Community Builders program under the auspice of our Local Member, Jodi McKay we were lucky to gain a grant of $30,000 which we are matching dollar for dollar. I think you would all agree that the oval was in dire need of repair.

Cricket nets

Similarly I have worked with Cricket NSW and NSW Sport and our Local Member Jodi McKay to revamp our Cricket Nets. Mr David Chapelow from the Strathfield Cricket Club helped us greatly with our submission and we now look forward to a $20,000 redevelopment project.

Maintenance Matters

Boys Toilets

I am pleased to report that a $70000 renovation project on the boys toilets was completed in early Term 2. These toilets were in bad need of repair and I very pleased with the result.

LOTE REPORTGreetings from the languages faculty. It has been a busy and successful term. We welcomed a new volunteer teacher from the Confucius Institute in China, Ms You.

A China Club was established in the Confucius classroom which has attracted more than 30 boys each Tuesday lunch time.

We welcomed a delegation of Principals from Korea. We sold ‘gelato’ at the Multicultural Day. Regrettably we are farewelling a much valued volunteer from the Confucius Institute, Ms Tang who has made an invaluable contribution to the learning of Chinese Mandarin at HBHS.

RECITAL NIGHT CONCERT AND ART EXHIBITIONThe annual Recital Night concert and Visual Arts exhibition was held in the School Hall on Thurs-day evening, 23rd of June. The evening started with a display of artworks from Yr7-11 students that showcased the many talents of our Visual Arts students. This was then preceded with a variety of solo and group performances that ranged from piano solos, electric guitar solo, viola solo, guitar duet, guitar ensemble and the Yr 10 and Yr11 Elective Music class bands.

An appreciative audience that included our local MP Ms Jodi McKay and Ms Marlene Doran from Bendigo bank and of course parents, staff, local friends and students who all enjoyed an hour of diverse musical entertainment of the highest standard.

During the concert there was a lucky door prize draw, and winners received vouchers for servic-es and products donated by local businesses. Supper was served by Interact Club members and volunteers from the Yr11 Visual Arts class. Donations received totalled in excess of $125 and will go towards the Exodus Foundation of Ashfield.

Selection of Artworks for Operation ArtWe have again selected four artworks from students in Yr7 & Y8 for the annual Operation Art exhibi-tion that will be held later in the year at the Armoury Art Gallery. The Visual Arts faculty at Home-bush BHS has had a history of success in this exhibition, where we have consistently had student work then selected for the Art Gallery of NSW exhibition and also chosen to go into children’s hospi-tals allover the state. We wish the boys success when the exhibition opens later this year.

HOMEBUSH BHS EMBRACES MULTICULTURISMThe 5th annual Multicultural day celebration was held on the 3rd of June at Homebush Boys High School and was again another roaring success. At the beginning of the day there was an assem-bly which was opened by the iconic international flag march led by the school’s Drum Corps. This year we had another highlight which was the Lion Dance made up of William Wong and his dance group.

We had the honour of inviting our distinguished guests such as Kathy Powzun from the Depart-ment of Education, honourable MP Jodi McKay and Honourable MP Craig Laundy, Esteemed principals and student leaders of local primary and high schools. The day was organised by Ms Kumaralingam and Ms Singh along with the SRC and Prefects which made it possible for everyone to soak in the spirit of a Multicultural school community. The day continued with multicultural performances held in the hall where the atmosphere was electric as the cultural performances were absolutely riveting. Students from every grade had a turn to view the different acts.

Performances ranged from eastern dancers, western classical piano pieces, Korean classical drums and flutes to beat boxing battles, cultural Indian, Greek, Chinese dancing and also music bands from our very own school were showcasing their talents. We were lucky to not only experience a display of cultural performances from our school, we had students from various other high schools in Sydney perform for us on this day. During the lunch break everyone had the opportu-nity to sample the different cultural culinary dishes that were on sale to students and teachers alike. This was made possible with the huge support of our Parent Council. The day was a great insight into the rich diversity of the many different cultures we have in our school. It is a testimony to, how multiculturalism works both in our school and in the local community.

HOMEBUSH BHS STUDENTS AND STAFF CELEBRATE RAMADAN IFTAR EVENING 2016

Our school celebrated the 7th Annual Ramadan Iftar on Thursday the 16th June. Under the guidance of Ms Bolbol, Ms Houvardas, Ms Kamil, Ms Bown, Mr Achmed and Mr Abbou, the boys worked closely with the teachers to run another fabulous evening of food, fun and celebration of our school’s multiculturalism.

The boys worked closely together, volunteering their time to organise a wonderful night that was attended by students of all faiths and cultures. It was lovely to see boys who had graduated from Homebush return and join current students and teachers. Special guest speakers on the night included Dr. Zachariah Matthews, educator in leadership and religion; community and me-dia advocate, Mr. Kamal Salah, OnePath Network media presenter as well as Mr. Omar Al Jamal and Mr. Amin El-Bureeny, representing Human Appeal International Australia.

Ms. Jodi McKay Member for Strathfield, Mrs. Yvonne Yun, Mrs. Kathy Totidis, Mr. Tim Jurd, Ms. Caitlin Dwyer and Mr. Peter Hughes were all Special guests present at the Iftar.

The night was mainly sponsored by Human Appeal International Australia.

Human Appeal International is a charity organisation that provides support and relief to people in need all over the world. The school was honoured to hand over a cheque of over $2000 raised from ticket sales. Human Appeal was also appreciative of further contributions made on the night by teachers and students.

The food, provided by Doggies Catering in Bankstown, consisted primarily of Middle Eastern foods, such as kefta, rice and several variants of chicken as well as the typical tabouli and other salads, plus more. Desserts were plenty and enjoyed by all. The night was enjoyed by all, which was evident by the sound of their chatter and seen while the attendees were connecting with one another, each representing a various religion and background.

The purpose was to promote the cultural diversity within our school and to share with our com-munity the experience of Muslim fasting and breaking the fasting. As well as this, we saw two of our teachers Ms Emily Yong and Ms Michelle Coutinho partake in the fasting, which lasts from sunrise until sunset.

That is really what the purpose of the night was about; to both inform people about this month as well as to unite the school community by showing support for each other.

We would like to thank students, teachers and members of our community for participating to make the night a great success and an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Ramadan Iftar Team.

Homebush BHS Rugby Team’s KING’S Experience

Homebush Boy’s 13 years rugby team played a ‘friendly” match against The King’s School at Par-

ramatta on Monday 20 June.  The game was vigorous, competitive and played in great spirit and

provided our boys a wonderful rugby experience. King’s eventually won 33-39 but not before the

lead changed hands several times.

Homebush 33 (Adam Paterson, Tarek Tabbah, Angelo Mun, Mark Seo, Zane Bardouh tries and Zane

Bardouh 3 and Jihad 1 Tabbah conversions. Homebush’s two best players Vinujan Vijayathas &

Kapeliele Fusi were presented with a new King’s rugby ball after the match.

Mr. Stephen James, King’s Rugby Coordinator and ex Wallaby said “the Homebush boys were a

credit to the school. They carried the ball into contact strongly and tackled aggressively”. King’s are

keen to host Homebush Boy’s High on an annual basis. In a generous gesture, Mr. James presented

each Homebush boy with a King’s rugby ball.

Homebush Boys High School this season has three rugby teams compared to King’s who field 30

teams in the GPS competition and have ten rugby fields. Their efforts highlight what a great effort

it was from our boys to provide quality opposition and demonstrates the strength of Public Edu-

cation. After the game, Homebush and King’s players joined together for speeches, presentations

and a photograph.

The 13 years team has trained twice a week at 7.30am since February with many boys playing

their first season of rugby. Recently, the team has participated in rugby sessions with the Waratahs

development officers. The team has made great progress in their play and in the match after the

King’s experience, drew with Ashfield Boy’s HS who currently lead the North West Zone competi-

tion.

ATHLETICS CARNIVALThe annual school athletics carnival was held on Friday the 1st of May. In contrast to last year we had perfect condi-tions to the horrible weather we had last year, which meant we a big turn out on the day, with a solid number of students participating. Special thanks also go you to all staff for their assistance in making it an enjoyable day for all. Well done to all students from the Vaughn House who were eventual winners on the day.
