Bu regains volleyball tilt in men’s competition

by Orson Mike Privaldos Playing at their home court, the Bicol university (Bu) men’s volleyball team regained their volleyball title of 2007, winning in straight sets, 25-13, 25-20, 25-22, over Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr, Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology (DEBESM-SCAT) Friday morning at the Bu volleyball court. Bu showed great command at the start of the game racing out to a 12-point win in the first set capitalizing on poor reception and errors by DEBESMSCAT. In the second set, the DEBESMSCAT spikers scored six out of seven points off the errors of Bu at the start of the game. Down 8-5, Bu rallied to score six straight points and main-tained the lead throughout the set. Bu raced out to a 6-3 lead in the third set but DEBESM-SCAT made a 5-0 run targeting the opponent’s weak side. Since then, the game became a see-saw match. Tied 22-all, Bu showed poise-under-pressure scoring three straight points on well-placed serves to their spikers. “Two straight years na kaming hindi nagcha-champion kaya pinilit talaga naming manalo,” Mario Arcabo, coach of Bu men’s vol-leyball team said.

Alwin Hugo, native of uson, Masbate defeated the twelve toughest athletes of the region marking 47.58 meters in the second attempt of the first throw. ramer Cruil of Partido State university (PSu) thwarted the others scoring 45.29 meters and paved his way to second place while Bicol university (Bu)’s bet rodel Cerezo plucked the third place with his 44.60-meter throw in his second attempt. “Ang masasabi ko lang ay nagbunga ang sakripisyo ng bata, halos walang practice na ginawa dahil masyadong busy sa training sa roTC. Tatlong araw lang ang kanyang preparasyon para sa kom-petisyong ito,” Dr. Arnulfo Marcos, DEBESMSCAT’s coach proudly said.

Meanwhile, rosalie Amor of Sorsogon State College (SSC) lobbed her best shot plotting 35.50 meters beating other lady throw-ers. With 32.71 meters, Valerie Tendenilla of Bu secured the silver medal followed by France Pedrasa of CBSuA with 31.81 meters. ”I am happy that I have maintained my title as a gold med-alist,” Amor stated. As the final round started, she bounced back with her first throw making it to the top. on the other hand, Hugo wielded an unreachable score in his second attempt of the first three throws, making his opponents lose their determination, expecting the Masbateňo to win.

has been the consistent SCUAA champion ever since it joined the tournament. With CNSC being the host for next year’s SCUAA tour-nament, Dipasupil said they are “pressured to surpass the grand opening prepared by BU.” “Hindi namin maipapangako na kaya naming tapatan ang ginawang paghahanda ng BU,” Dipasupil said, noting that they have a limited budget for the next SCUAA. He even called for help from other SUC presidents to make next year’s SCUAA equally exceptional. “That’s quite understandable. Everyone wants to show-case their best. But competition is not the real essence. It is pro-moting solidarity that matters,” was President Lauraya’s reaction upon being told of CNSC’s concern. Despite failing, the sports coordinators and some ath-letes from other participating schools talked about their great experiences in the 5-day tournament. “It’s not about how we win, or how we lose, it’s all about how we played the game. As long as there is no injury. Pero sa amin, kung sino pa ang naka-gold, siya pa ang injured,” Partido State University (PSU) Sports Coordinator Josephine Botor jest-ed. Meanwhile, Emily Berja, Camarines Sur Polytechnic College (CSPC) sports coordinator said that they plan to roam around Embarcadero so they could unwind before going home. She also mentioned that they will train earlier for the next SCUAA Meet. “The whole experience gave everyone time to grow, given that we’re away from home and we’re in quarters that’s dif-ferent from home,” Dr. Lily Custodio, vice president for adminis-tration and financial affairs of Catanduanes State Colleges (CSC) said. She added that their delegation this year was the biggest so far with 200 participants. BU will host SCUAA again in 2019. When asked if her recent reappointment as BU President has bearing with the school’s grand hosting of SCUAA 2010, she replied. “We’ve been doing our best for the last three years. I will double the efforts to ensure that BU remains number one. ” Lauraya also extended her congratulations not only to BU winners but the entire university and other delegates.

DEBESMSCAT strips title off BU for takrawBy Ivy Cascante, Jyrevi Mae A. Fernandez & Vevie Via galemba

Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Ag-riculture and Technology (DEBESMSCAT) sepak takraw team will head home as champions, having controlled the deciding match against Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) 19-21, 21-15, and 15-10 Thursday morning. With both teams taking turns for the lead, CBSUA owned the first set as they made it to the 21-point ceiling with their somersaults. However, the crowd tensed as DEBESMSCAT controlled the second set with skillful and precise maneuvers, leaving a 6-point margin over CBSUA. The supporters from both parties began to taunt each other for the tiebreaker. With a swift serve from DEBESMSCAT’s Tekong, Mark Anthony Enteriso, both teams began to take turns once again for the win. DEBESMSCAT made it to 15 points, roll-ing over CBSUA by 5 points. By the end of the tiebreaker, weeks of training finally paid-off for Enteriso and teammates Marvic Arigadas, Marco Es-

pares and Charlie Tamayo as they fought hand-in-hand during the 3-day sepak takraw tournament. “It was a good match. CBSUA players are good, and it proved to be a challenge,” DEBESMSCAT sepak takraw coach Gerald Ramo said. In the face of being so close to being hailed as champi-ons, CBSUA players said that it was okay, since the players from the opposing team played very well. DEBESMSCAT made a mark as they broke Bicol Univer-sity (BU)’s almost grand slam for the top rank in sepak takraw, with the latter winning first place for two consecutive years. According to BU sepak takraw coach Danilo Mendevil, the players basically lacked training, but they aim to take back what was taken from them in the succeeding State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) meets. Following CBSUA is Camarines Norte State College (CNSC) in third place.

undefeated Bu retains soccer title, brings down CBSuA 4-0; CNSC gets 3rd place

A strong second half propelled defending champions Bicol university against Central Bicol State university of Agriculture 4-0 in the finals of the 2010 SCuAA football tournament. CBSuA, fresh from a victory against Camarines Norte State College was ready to upend the hosts even if they just came off a game 30 minutes earlier. Bu, who enjoyed a twice to beat advantage need-ed only to fend off their challengers to secure their football crown. The scorching late morning sun shone over the field as Fed-erico Almaquer of Bu made an attempt but the ball went high off the bar. In the 10th minute of the first half, Marvin Balilo made a cross pass from the right to a waiting Marvin Echaluce who literally used his head to score Bu’s first goal in the game. The hosts remained aggressive offensively as Vincent Man-lapaz tried to goal from the left but went off the side. Almaquer once again had a good look but like his previous attempt, went too high. It was CBSuA’s turn to strike with Erwin Miña making a cross pass from the left but was taken away by Bu goalie Arnold Padilla before Miña’s teammate Jim oliver could make a move. Another good attempt by Miña was tipped away by Padilla. oliver tried to make another shot but flew off the top of the goal. Miña kicked a long one from midfield that seemed to be on target but fell short as the ball bounced off the left post. CBSuA shouted cries of disbelief on the potential equalizer as referee Butch Javier blew the whistle to end the first half. Bu retained its aggressive form heading into the second half as Manlapaz made a good corner pass from the left but was deflected by CBSuA’s agile Christopher Cariño. Manlapaz made another cor-ner pass from the left corner with Echaluce attempting to make the same header that gave them the lead but this time the ball went way over the top. In the 49th minute, Echaluce made an unchallenged goal from what seemed to look like an offside but the linesman signaled the play was good. The CBSuA side loudly protested the controver-sial move but the game went on with Bu leading 2-0. An aggressive Almaquer looked to score but was denied in his next two attempts. Finally his dedication on offense paid off as Almaquer scored the final two goals in the game at the 60th and 65th

minute. Bu continued it’s aggressiveness until referee Javier blew the final whistle which caused celebration from the home side. “Compared to the previous game against CBSuA, this time we converted a lot of our plays,” Bu Coach randy Austria said. “We still made errors in the first half but we managed to regroup by the second,” he added. “We fielded in our second stringers in order not to risk an extension of the game and to ensure the win,” he said. “It was a good game. They gave us a good fight and we let the Lord lead the way for us,” Federico Almaquer said. “our strategy was to play on the ground, avoid long passes, and keep the team in-tact,” he added. “We were focused, but to be fair Bu was strong,” CBSuA Assistant Coach Alfie Bonot said. “I think our game was fair. It was ok as long as we played good and clean,” he added. “There was an off-side in the second half that wasn’t called by the officials but we didn’t complain further as the refs had already decided then,” he said. “We’ll meet them again next year that’s for sure,” Bonot said. In the first game, after defeating Sorsogon State College 2-0, Camarines Norte State College (CNSC) faced Central Bicol State university of Agriculture (CBSuA) for the battle of the last spot in the finals. The game fired up with a scorching hot atmosphere and a soft breeze. Some attempts proved futile as they scored nil-nil during the first half. The game heated up as Erwin Miña scored two consecutive goals for CBSuA in the 35th second of the 10th minute and 23rd minute of second half. The players got a break as Norwen roldan, goal keeper of CNSC, got injured in the second half and was sub-stituted by Michael de Asis. In the last minute, Marco Archimedes scored and gave CBSuA a 4-1 lead. “The team got stronger considering the difficulties we’ve faced” confessed Felomino Fernandez, CNSC Football Head Coach. “Even though we didn’t win, the good thing is we retained the third spot.” he adds. CBSuA Coach Martin Encinares said that it was great to be a part of the finals though his team didn’t anticipate winning. It was CBSuA’s first time to be in the title fight. CNSC meanwhile got the bronze medal despite the defeat.

CBSUA edges CSC in baseball men finals

by Gerard Francis Ogad The Central Bicol State university of Agriculture (CBSuA) capitalized on the sloppy fielding of Catanduanes State Colleges (CSC) to score a 9-6 victory, making them the baseball champion in the 22nd SCuAA meet. CBSuA trailed no defeats in the five-inning elimination matches which advanced them to the seven-inning final fight against CSC that holds a record of only one defeat in the entire tourna-ment. The four-runs third inning was a good start for CSC while CBSuA only had two runs on the second and third innings. As CSC led the first half of the match, they made another two-run fourth inning, placing CBSuA behind with a four-run lead up to the fifth inning. CBSuA however bounced back at the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs. Most of the damage made by CSC occurred during the fifth up to the last inning with one error. Coach Jhohan Socito of CSC spotted their players’ fielding and some batting strategies as factors which left them behind on the last half of the game. CBSuA took the lead on the sixth up to the final inning by 3 points that finished off the game. rafael Cordovilla, tourna-ment’s resident referee and umpire commented that CBSuA made safe moves during those innings to regain the battle. With another win this season, CBSuA already completed five championships. Jaime Paruma, CBSuA’s baseball trainer attrib-uted their triumph to god and to effective set placing of different positions, as well as to Coach Cesar Camba Sr. who was once an international baseball player. At the end of the game, Cordivilla tagged CBSuA players Merate and Delos Santos and CSC’s Melgar as the tournament’s slug-gers. Tournament Manager Prof. rolando Llona noted that the teams in this year’s baseball tournament were all competitive.

Baylon added that the team was able to overcome obstacles and fix errors during the game so that they could win. “Nahirapan kami sa CSC,” ryan revilla, Bu’s highest pointer said. He scored 31 points during the championship game. “Malalaki kasi ang mga kalaban namin at magaling ang de-pensa nila,” he added. revilla stated that he did not expect to score 31 points con-sidering that this was his first time to be included in Bu’s SCuAA basketball line-up. revilla is a senior from Bicol university Polangui Campus.

BU players still on topin racket games

Bicol University (BU) players maintained a good stand-ing in racket games as they routed opponents from two schools during the third day of the SCUAA tournament, Thursday. BU table tennis players remained unbeaten when they crushed opponents from Central Bicol State University of Agri-culture (CBSUA) in table tennis men division. Scoring 11-4, 11-8, 11-4 and 11-5 in a best of seven set, Gniezno Sarmiento of BU gave no room for CBSUA player Brian Kim Valeros in the singles division. The flies watch as the ants play There are eight colorful trails of ants bracing up for a week-long battle. oh, they seem to appear like platoons of soldiers warmly welcomed by the two higher ups; one is the oh-tie-a-yellow-ribbon-‘round-the-old-oak-tree’ and the recently reappointed president of the acing blue. And here comes the buzzing bee to spice up the event with confetti. But the ants are no ordinary ants, because they dance on the field, they throw, dribble, bat and toss a ball, they are well-versed of the fair and square rule, they don’t even mind the rain and, oh heaven, they can swim. They are gathered to collect gold, silver and bronze. So blow a wish that all colors unite to form a newfangled rainbow so at its end they’d be awarded with a pot of gold. But who are these flies swarming the area as though it’s a feast. Look, they are a bunch of pesky goons keen of asking and asking about whatever. only that you just can’t press and shoo them because they got several ears and nose around. Who knows their base, I heard they needed extra ink, bond papers and computer units. Ahem, extra food would do. And they need ‘day’ so the guard won’t shoo them away when the clock ticks at 10pm. People, who do not care, please care not to read. Anyone who knows the line of the week, “Please clear the truck.” I mean track. Who found the student’s wallet with more than 7, 000 pesos in it? Care to give it back; it’s for her enrolment fee. And poor caterer, who snatched his wallet? kindly return the ID to Bulaklak. Calling medical team in front of the basketball court, a volleyball player was injured. Did he or she faint? oops, a commotion in the oval, the yellow ants exchanged words with the blue ants. Because the yellow team had an early jumped for triumph but officials called another run to win the match. In the end of the bout, “kanila pa rin ang huling halakhak.” Turn a bit to the other side; athletic ants stride like horses

in the track. And their only drive is the crowd’s cheers pumping more blood in their veins. But poor ants when they get to the finish line, some seem to lose breath but others look like they don’t break into a sweat. Boy, you can only say, “Hain daw ang orag?” if you can hit the apple above a target’s head but there is no apple. Stamp a foot as you serve the ping-pong ball, it’s a charm to win a bout. Make sure you got extraordinarily long legs to jump extraordinarily far and do not make a midget serve the takraw, it always is netball. oh, let the tall one serve the ball so he could smash it right there on the receiver’s court. Poof, you score. Do not dream while executing a backstroke, the water is not a bed. When darkness seeps through the place to scare off kids, lovers take courage to slip away. oh, men love playing Pusoy dos and Tong-its to kill the night. others? They want to shut up whoever is singing badly in the middle of the night and retire to bed ‘til the break of dawn. After a tedious and tiresome week, you’ll ride on a coaster with your team and as you peek through the windowpane, release a sigh. Bravo! You did it. Even if you do not crack the crown this season, you are a horse with an extra leg, a batter that strikes a ball 5 miles from the mound, you are an archer that hits your loved one-bull’s eye, you are a sexy swimmer who looks sizzling hot on the pool, you did checkmate your dad when you ask for a thousand pesos of pocket money, you already made a goal when you reach this level. And you already win when you dream. Because your heart hopes and gets what it least expects. And the least you expect, the widely you accept things that go along your way. For some time, you would real-ize that the writer is just consoling a crestfallen. You will look for this fly and slap its face. Do it! Then you ponder. Flies watch while you play.

CBSuA remains champion in softball, 21-8By Franco Honesto Lasay and Henor gotis

Trailing the same fate in last year’s competition, Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) demolished Cat-anduanes State Colleges (CSC) in a score 21-8 at the finals of the 22nd SCUAA softball tournament, Friday. CBSUA unleashed their major weapon Shane Silot, who has played twice in the Palarong Pambansa competition. The tight game started at the score of 1 all. In the sec-ond inning CBSUA find luck making 2 runs to shutdown the mo-rale of CSC battlers. As the game heats up, CBSUA kept their fire burning by sliding 6 runs worthy to nail CSC being scoreless on the third in-ning. CSC managed to steal points by finishing 4 runs but CBSUA outgunned them by pounding them with 7 more runs, ending in a 16-5 standing. CSC smelling tension in the game, managed to trail 3 runs in a hope to prevent CBSUA in complet-ing a single run at the fifth inning. CBSUA bounced back in a revenge during the the sixth inning by delivering a 4 run turn around, flashing a series of catches that crippled the points of CSC, hammering them with a 12 point lead. In the top of the last inning, CSC still kept their hopes up, allowing only a single run for the Camarines Sur battlers.

CBSUA made an easy block on CSC’s last three batters which in-cluded the winning catch that secured their victory, 21-8. “It was a nice game. The opponents were really good especially their pitcher,” CSC coach Vergilio Decano said, “Next time I’m going to produce a good pitcher.” Coach Mariel Almelor of CBSUA also took their once-again-rival a worthy opponent and has noticed that it was their pitcher that carried them through the game against CSC’s skilled batters. “They can’t stand long hours in the field. Our strategy is to delay the game and exhaust them,” Almelor added. Almelor furthered that his team undergoes individual trainings and does group trainings with other schools in their province (Camarines Sur) prior to the tournament. Adding up that most CBSUA play-ers are Palarong Pambansa representatives and there are only three newbies on the team. “I am glad with our victory. I wish that four of my players could graduate this year because they are senior students,” said Almelor. The team not only aims to take home the trophy, they are also going to use the incentives to help with the X-ray ses-sion of one of their players who is believed to be suffering from a cyst.
