TERM 1 NO. 3 DATE: 5 March 2020

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2020 Literacy Summit in Adelaide for leaders and teachers from across the State. The keynote speaker for the day was Nancy Frey, an American educator and leader in literacy learning. She reported that she had had the following conversation with a student. Teacher: Where’s your book? Student: At home. Teacher: What’s it doing there? Student: Having more fun than me. Whilst this is a humorous look at the conversations teachers may be having each day, it highlights that in today’s world we need to make learning relevant and interesting so that students become engaged and therefore reach their full potential. At Burra we are fortunate that we are able to offer students a range of pathways through their schooling that were not necessarily available when parents were at school. If you have a student in Year 9 or above and would like to talk about alternative pathways, please contact us to arrange an appointment and we will investigate the possibilities available. Earlier this week we waved off the Year 8s as they headed to Port Vincent for the aquatics camp. The River Murray Youth Council (RMYC) is a fantastic opportunity for high school students (Year 8-12). Students who are interested in the environment come together to meet new people, learn new skills and assist with projects aimed at protecting our environment. The students will be directly involved with real, hands-on projects throughout the year.

For more information contact [email protected]

If you are interested in being part of the RMYC this year, please share this information with your parents.

FROM THE WELLBEING

COORDINATOR

This Friday, our Secondary SRC and Prefects are attending the Halogen Young Leaders Day held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. The day will be focussed on building leadership skills and hearing from influential and inspiring leaders from around Australia. So far, John Coutis, Kane Cornes, Jade Slater, Bianca Chatfield and Marc McBride are confirmed speakers on the day. Again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Regional Council of Goyder for providing funding for this fantastic opportunity.

Last Friday, our school was involved in Clean up Australia Day around our school and town. It was great to see the enthusiasm and pride shown in our living and learning areas. Younger students identified what was general waste and what was recyclable, and disposed of it accordingly. It was also a great opportunity to walk around Burra and appreciate what a beautiful area we live and learn in.

Athletics practice is in full swing during HPE and at lunch times. Please ensure to check the school Facebook page and newsletter for information about the day, and also the long runs and javelin which are held in the days leading up to Athletics Day. A big thank you to Jess Tiver for her work in organising information and the events. Make sure to check out the sports board outside the gym for athletics records and the events timetable.

The ball is rolling with our Nature Play space with plans beginning to come together. We have a handful of enthusiastic parents involved which has motivated our SRC group. If you are interested in being involved in this project or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact me here at the school.

We have a few busy weeks coming up with school sports day, interschool sports day and basketball finals. Good luck to everyone involved, enjoy the competition, represent your house/team with pride and most of all, enjoy yourself.

The Agriculture report starts with congratulating Georgie Lines and Bradtke Stockman. They were successful winners of the Poll Dorset Association scholarship for the 2020 Sheep Expo (15th – 17th April). There is another opportunity for students to win a scholarship to a Sheep Expo. The CWA Goyder region have a scholarship on offer which requires an application to the CWA. More information can be found in the daily bulletin for students, or by contacting Miss Crighton. Registrations are closing soon for Sheep Expo, so please be quick and email Miss Crighton with your confirmation for record keeping purposes. More information and entry can be found here: https://www.sasheepexpo.com.au/. There are also some exciting opportunities coming up for students and they will be continually promoted through the daily bulletin or the communication board down at the Ag Block. One exciting opportunity will be a cattle and sheep education day at the Jamestown showgrounds coming up on Friday 24th July for Year 10-12 students. As more opportunities come up throughout the year, these will be advertised through the daily bulletin and the Ag Block communication board.

Our show team is continually growing with the arrival of our South Australian School’s Merino Wethers competition teams. A big commendation to Cody Jones (Year 12) who has taken on the added responsibility of Wethers as it is his Year 12 External investigation for SACE. This is a huge responsibility and given his previous success with sheep, his contacts in industry and his willingness to support younger students in Agriculture, he is a true asset to our show team. The wethers have now been shorn by Brett Jones (with the help of some Year 10 students) and booked in for their tagging and weigh-in with Merino SA.

Figure 2 Caboose the Limousin during his training sessions

There are now 4 confirmed steers which will arrive over the holidays if all goes well. The team will consist of Gumhill South Devon, Princess Royal Black Angus, Shorthorn from Matt Ashby and the Limousin. I have received regular updates from Dr Emily Buddle who has kindly donated Caboose, the Limo. He is very quiet and taking well to gentle training. There has been big talk around the Ag block about the arrival of miniature goats. These mini goats will provide students with more opportunity to lead animals at the show. At this stage, they have been running with a Buck so there is a high chance that the Does are pregnant. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you can help out the agricultural department in a positive and/or education way, it would be greatly appreciated.

R-7 SWIMMING LESSONS

My class went swimming in week two and three. I had a good vibe about lifesaving lessons in the Burra Pool. We learnt about survival and safety. Our instructor was good at teaching. It was fun and important. I learnt a lot and had so much fun with my friends in the pool.

Tommy Nicholls In week two and three our class had swimming lessons. The lessons were at the Burra Pool. We had swimming lessons because it's important to be safe and know how to swim. We were put into groups. We learnt strokes and new techniques which was really fun. Our instructor's name was Louise. The temperature of the pool was a bit cold. We got to go down to the deep end with a life jacket. It was very, very fun! I really loved swimming lessons and I can't wait to do it next year. Marissa Bevan

R-12 SPORTS DAY Friday 13th March

Sports Day is fast approaching, and it is a wonderful day where students participate in many different events to earn points for our three houses - Jennison, Riggs and Steele. We encourage all students to get behind their house and wear their team colours: Riggs - red; Steele - blue; Jennison - yellow.

A hat must be worn at all times throughout the day (except during running events) in which case sunscreen will be strongly encouraged and available on the day. Please ensure hats are labelled to avoid losing them.

Students arrive at school at the normal time, and R-6 students are to go to their classes in the morning as per normal. Students can leave once the day has concluded (approx. 3.00 - 3.20pm), however they must notify their class teacher when they are leaving and with whom they are leaving with. Buses will run as per normal. If Sports Day finishes early and your child is being picked up at the end of the day, a teacher will be with them until the normal pick up time of 3.20pm.

Lunch can be a packed lunch from home or purchased on the day from the Canteen tent which will be located at the oval. There will be a range of food, drinks and snacks. The Canteen will be closed, so no Flexischool orders please. Cogwebs Coffee Van will also be operating on the day.

Helpers - there are many different ways you can help - in the canteen, with timing, or assisting the class teachers. Your help will always be appreciated.

REMINDER TO PARENTS

A friendly reminder that the top car park (behind Tech Studies / Home Ec. classrooms) is not a drop off or parent parking zone. This park is for community library users, canteen staff and organised school visitors. Please use the bus car park or kindy car park to drop and collect your children. The disabled park is for people with a disability and organisations that provide transport to people with a disability. People using this park are required to display their Australian disability parking permit. For information on qualifying for a disabled park, please refer to:

https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/driving-and-transport/disability/disability-parking-permit

Also, please be aware that the speed limit is 25km/p/h when children are present. A few people are ignoring this, especially around the caravan park/kindy carpark. Remember that the safety of our students and their families is paramount.
