here&there... at SaratogaNAMES OF THE DAYHomewood Field, first race. Nothing to do with the 3-year-old colt’s pedigree, but he takes his name from “the Yankee Stadium of lacrosse” at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The horse’s co-owner, Sol Kumin, played lacrosse at Hopkins.

Chiltern Street, ninth race. The 4-year-old colt is out of Marylebone, a section of London, En-gland. Chiltern Street is considered the “must-visit street” of the neighborhood.

Magritte, sixth race. The 4-year-old colt knows his art. His dam Pissarro is named for Camille Pissarro, an 1800s impressionist known for establishing a society of aspiring artists and being a mentor to Cezanne, Gauguin and Renoir. Magritte is named for Rene Magritte, a Belgian surrealist whose works include (among others) “The Lost Jockey.” The horses were bred, and named, by Marylander (and art collector) Robert Meyerhoff.

Trainer Ricky Hendriks, who won 130 races as a jump jockey, crediting Sean McDermott with some patience in Wednesday’s steeplechase win with Detroit Blues

“I felt a bit of a relief crossing the line, I think it’s more from what happened to the connections last week. It’s different if you’re a jockey riding four or five races a day, if one goes wrong you move on to the next, but when it’s only one day, there’s a lot of effort to get one horse here, for the stable staff, the trainer, everybody concerned so it’s important to get it right and thankfully it worked today.”

“Preston Burch was a great trainer, not just because he wrote the book but he was good. I tried to read his book once a year. Just basic things, you’ll say to yourself, ‘Yeah, he’s right about that.’ He shod a lot of his horses every three weeks, I always thought four, that was one thing that surprised me. He claimed if you were run-ning a horse who you were afraid you hadn’t done enough with, cut his feed back. He didn’t feed much alfalfa. You won’t hardly dis-agree with anything he says in there. There are things in there that will click with you and that was 50, 60 years ago.”

The sun is still waking up, seep-ing through the hazy fog that rested atop the Oklahoma Training Track as 7:40 rolls around Thursday morning. The first break comes to an end and horses begin to tromp onto the dirt, beginning their morning workouts. A frisky bay parades onto the track, knees kicking high, jigging side to side, with Rudy Rodriguez sitting on top smiling, the yellow letters of his saddle cloths standing out against the blue hues of the foggy track.

Fast forward to a half-hour later and Rodriguez is spotted again, this time on the ground holding the shank of a nervous 2-year-old chestnut with a big white blaze as a parade of five other horses follows along the perim-eter of the Oklahoma.

While Rodriguez catches a break from sets around 9, he is in his office scanning through the program check-ing on potential claims. He checks on his horses again as training comes to an end, and moves on to prepare for his afternoon starters.

“I try to stay busy,” Rodriguez said. “It’s hard work, there’s no time to relax over here. We’ve put in a lot of work and we’ve got a good group. We’re happy the horses are happy and running good, and we’ll try to keep the owners happy.”

Rodriguez has won eight races with five seconds and four thirds from 42 starts through Thursday, good for fourth in the Saratoga standings. The barn is seventh by purses earned with $498,017 through Thursday.

“(The horses) look like they love Saratoga; we love Saratoga, too,” Rodriguez said. “You never know, you’re in Saratoga. You’ve got to be in it to win it.”

Rodriguez spent a few moments between morning workouts and Monday’s races to talk about some of the horses in his barn with The Spe-cial’s Shayna Tiller.

Everybodyluvsrudy: Two-year-old Union Rags colt finished second in a July 1 maid-en at Belmont Park. “He was supposed to run the other day and he had some kind of reaction and we had to scratch him. We did the right thing; he looks very good right now. Ready to go. Named by Michael Imperio, one of the best owners we have, as well as Michael Dubb. I’ve had another owner name a horse Rudy Rudy Rudy, and I had to put him in for claiming. Same with Mr Rodriguez. If they run, they stay. I can’t fall in love with them; it’s a business, too.”

Pure Lemon: A stakes winner in Puerto Rico imported by owner Luis Archilla, 3-year-old Eskendereya filly won an allowance-op-tional at Pimlico June 11 and was 10th in a Belmont allowance-optional July 17. “We

entered her over here a couple times and she didn’t get in. She’s here, she’s ready to go.”

Asset Inflation: Claimed out of a winning allowance-optional July 27 by Michael Dubb and Gabrielle Farm, 6-year-old Greeley’s Gal-axy gelding is entered for Saturday’s Troy Stakes. “He seems like a nice horse. I’ll run him in the Troy. We claimed him for $40,000 and he seems like a nice horse, solid horse.”

Mighty Moses: Previously trained in Cal-ifornia by Bob Baffert, Zayat Stables shipped the 3-year-old Candy Ride colt to Rodriguez this summer and he finished fourth in an Aug. 8 maiden at Saratoga. “He had trouble in the race, but he ran a good race. He’s a nice horse. The owners want to run in Saratoga so I’m try-ing to keep them happy.”

Summer Revolution: Jeff Drown’s Sum-mer Bird colt ran record to 2-for-2 with allow-ance win at Saratoga Aug. 6. “We have big hopes for him. We ran him the other day and he ran very, very big. Hopefully we can run him in the King’s Bishop. He ran pretty fast so I guess he likes it here.”

In It For The Gold: A $225,000 buy at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale, Speightstown filly finished third in back-to-back maiden races July 2 at Belmont and Aug. 7 at Saratoga. “The other horses looked like they were pretty good (in Aug. 7 race). She’s a very nice filly. She’s been unfortunate to run with some tough horses. She ran with Libby’s Tail first time, but she’s doing good. Hopefully I’ll run her one more time up here.”

Frosty Margarita: Gabrielle Farm’s home-bred Frost Giant filly, last year’s champion New York-bred 2-year-old filly, pins her ears

and takes a nip at Rodriguez as he approaches her stall. She finished fourth in the Cab Cal-loway division of the New York Stallion Se-ries Aug. 11. “I don’t think she was ready to run. She came back with a little splint (after her June 26 start at Belmont), so we missed a couple weeks with her. I just gave her the race, I thought maybe the class she could overcome, but oh well. She’s a homebred, very special to us. She never finishes out of the money and always tries. We’re going to give her another chance. She’ll be ready now. She’s big; mean, too.”

Colorful Charades: Michael Ryan’s 2-year-old Discreet Cat filly, a winner going 6 1/2 furlongs in her debut Aug. 14, sticks her head out and gets some affectionate pats on her dappled grey head. “Hi baby! She won yesterday. I really like her. She’s nice, nice fil-ly. We want to keep her here and take a look at the Spinaway at the end of the meet. Hopefully she can recuperate, she’s a little light. I don’t know how she’s going to take the race, but she looks happy and alert.”

Royal Posse: One of three stakes winners at the meet for Rodriguez, 5-year-old Posse gelding won the Alydar Aug. 7. “Very, very nice claim. We claim him for $20,000 and he’s very, very, very good. Since we’ve claimed him he doesn’t finish worse than second. He’s won five races (and finished second five times) with us. He loves Saratoga so we’ve got a couple more races for him. There’s a stake at the end of the meet for New York-breds (Evan Shipman, Sept. 2).”

Libby’s Tail: Two-year-old Tiz Wonderful filly, entered in today’s Grade 2 Adirondack, excitedly greets Rodriguez with a nudge as he steps in front of her stall. “She’s a pretty spe-

cial filly. Very nice, very kind. She was the fa-vorite, more pressure for us. She’s doing every-thing that we’re asking. We have to give credit to the buyer (Kim Valerio, agent for Dubb), she does her work and they got a nice filly. I wish they ran the other day, but I was happy that they cancelled the races because I really didn’t want to run them on the track. They’re just babies. We’re looking forward to see her run.”

Jamyson ’N Ginger: Magic Cap Sta-bles purchased the filly for $280,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida sale of selected 2-year-olds in training. She finished third in her debut going 6 1/2 furlongs Aug. 14 at Saratoga. “I’m going to keep her here, hopefully we can run her one more time. I’m not sure. She ran a good race and got a little tired. It was her first time so you expect her to get a little tired, but I was proud of her. We’re just happy that the owners give us these opportunities with these types of horses. She’s well bred, by Bernardini (out of Canadian champion Ginger Brew). Looks like she came out good, alert, happy.”

Celestial Sighting: Second in last year’s Bolton Landing and Lady Finger Stakes, 3-year-old Eskendereya filly makes first start since Jan. 8 in state-bred allowance Saturday. “She ran last year here in Saratoga, then ran in a stake. She’s doing good. A little skinny, we’d like to put on more weight but that’s the way she is. She thinks she’s a model.”

Condo Prince: Second in July 9 debut at Bel-mont, 2-year-old Paddy O’Prado colt is entered in Saturday’s seventh going 6 furlongs on the main track. The colt was asleep, his head rest-ing on his hay net. “It looks like he’s going to be nice. We’ll see. He’s doing good. Eventually he’ll go long distance.”

Jules N Rome: Dubb’s 4-year-old Dunkirk filly is another of Rodriguez’s Saratoga stakes winner, taking Monday’s Saratoga Dew. Dubb and Rodriguez claimed the filly for $62,500 at Saratoga July 27. After the Saratoga Dew, Ro-driguez discussed what he liked. “She’s a nice looking filly that can go long. She’s never real-ly run a bad race. We’re looking for consistent horses and sound horses. We got lucky that she’s nice and sound. Dominick Schettino did a good job to keep her sound and then Danny Gargan kept her sound, too.”

Cespedes: A $62,000 buy this year, 2-year-old colt by Justenuffhumor has breezed five times at Saratoga, twice from the gate. “We’re trying to push, trying to get him ready for the end of the meet. New York-bred, they named him after a baseball player for the Mets. He’s doing good, I’m not sure I can get him ready the way I want, but we’ll see. We still have a couple of weeks.”

BY SHAYNA TILLERThe petite bay filly stands quietly just inside

the entry of her stall, dozing in and out on a qui-et Thursday morning in Rick Violette’s barn. The main track has just begun its break, and the back-side of Saratoga Race Course seems to slow down for a moment. Her ears prick as a visitor looms in the entrance, and she spins around, eager to accept a pat on the head. A golf cart whizzes by the corner stall and her ears flash right, seeming to notice the hay hanging for the first time and begins to nibble.

After being scratched from the race’s original date Aug. 13, Olive Branch is healthy, relaxed and ready to tackle today’s rescheduled Adirondack Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.

six days ago, all races were canceled following the fifth, and the Grade 2 Adirondack rescheduled for today. Olive Branch was scratched before the 6 1/2-furlong race, however.

“She went on a hunger strike on me for a few days,” said Violette. “She was coming back on short rest and things need to be really perfect when they’re coming back on short rest. They weren’t perfect, so we scratched.”

Violette breezed the Speightstown filly 3 furlongs Monday morning, as track conditions returned to normal.

“Just a maintenance work,” said the trainer. “A little half-mile well within herself. Kind of wanted to spur her appetite, but not do too much to put her over the top. We got it done. (The delay) gave us an extra week. Her appetite’s better and she’s doing great so we’ll take a shot.”

Ralph Evans’ Olive Branch broke her maiden at Belmont in May and finished fifth in the Grade 3 Schuyler-ville at Saratoga July 22, with way-

ward behavior in the paddock that impacted her trip.

“She was an idiot in the paddock, tore off a shoe,” said Violette. “We’ve schooled her multiple times, we schooled her yesterday and you could have given pony rides on her. But she’s done that all along and when race day comes the devil comes out a little bit, so we hope we have it under control.

“It’s a tough race, it’s a bunch of maiden winners but there’s some nice fillies in the race. It’s certainly no layup.”

Bred in Kentucky by Stonehav-en Steadings, Olive Branch cost $185,000 at the OBS March sale and gets a chance to live up to it in the $200,000 Adirondack, race 10 of 11. Jose Ortiz gets aboard from post three in a field of seven.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas looks forward to putting Churchill Downs Racing Club’s Dial Me in the rain-checked Adirondack today.

“(The delay) might have been a plus,” said Lukas, aboard his pony Starbuck between sets Thursday morning. “We shipped her up here and got a little work into her and now

because of the delay we got another work on the racetrack. So it didn’t hurt us for sure, and it might even have helped us a little bit.”

The Churchill Downs Racing Club is a new partnership based at Chur-chill Downs, comprised of 200 peo-ple paying a $500 fee to participate in Thoroughbred ownership. The club selected Hall of Famer Lukas to train and manage the club’s horses, and he privately purchased Dial Me in Oca-la, Fla. this spring.

“I don’t think even in our most grandiose idea we could have project-ed that she was going to be in a Grade 2 already,” said Lukas. “She’s doing super and she’s certainly better than I anticipated her to be. We’re pretty excited about her. She’s a very aggres-sive, very forward filly.”

This will be the Dialed In filly’s third start after placing fifth at Chur-chill in her debut June 24 and win-ning at Ellis Park July 23. As Lukas said, she’s worked a half-mile twice over the Oklahoma training track (the latest a :49 Sunday).

“We just gave her a maintenance work to keep her sharp and she did really well,” said Lukas. “I feel good, I think we’re jumping in the deep end of the pool obviously. It’s hard to fathom that you could get a very inexpensive filly like this to be at this level already. We’ve gotten lucky and

I think that’s a part of being in the racehorse game – be a little bit lucky and catch lightning in a jar.”

Trainer Rudy Rodriguez brings 5-2 morning line favorite Libby’s Tail to the starting gate, after breezing the fil-ly Monday morning and keeping her sharp leading up to today.

“She went out at 5:30 when the track opened, schooled in the pad-dock,” the trainer said. “She’s a very classy filly. The cancelation didn’t change much. Maybe something for the owners, maybe they wanted to make two races in the meet. Now we’ve just got to push everything back. That’s the only thing. So far so good, she looks like she’s a nice filly, she’s doing everything we’re asking, and let’s just hope for the best.”

Owned by Michael Dubb and part-ners, Libby’s Tail cost $375,000 as the OBS April sale and won her debut at Belmont Park July 2. Irad Ortiz stays aboard the daughter of Tiz Wonderful from the outside post.

Filling out the Grade 2 Adirondack are Nonna Mela, from the barn of Todd Pletcher and coming off a lop-sided maiden win at Monmouth Park July 2; Ever So Clever, who won a 6-furlong maiden for Steve Asmussen at Churchill July 1; Silvertoni, who won twice in Kentucky this spring (once against males) and finished ninth of 18 at Royal Ascot for trainer Wesley Ward June 14; Romantic Mu-sic, the only runner not in the original race, off a Monmouth Park maiden win Aug. 5 for trainer Derek Ryan.

BY ANNISE MONTPLAISIRWellabled worked fine on the dirt at Saratoga

Race Course, but wasn’t showing Larry Rivelli ex-actly what he wanted in the morning.

The trainer knew the Shackleford colt was tal-ented, liking him enough to lock into a bidding war this spring at the OBS April 2-year-olds in training sale.

He liked him even more when he dominated his debut at Arlington Park and he likes his chances in today’s $100,000 Skidmore Stakes.

“I knew he was pretty special when we bought him,” Rivelli said Thursday morning outside his barn near the five-eighths pole on the main track. “I worked him on the dirt when I first got him here and he worked OK, but kind of a laboring track

for him. I worked him again, he worked a little bit better, still laboring.”

Rivelli needed to make a decision – stick with the original plan and enter the Grade 2 Saratoga Special Stakes going 6 1/2 furlongs on a dirt surface the colt didn’t seem to appreciate or try a different avenue. He chose the latter and entered the Skid-more at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

“I worked him on the turf and he worked much, much better, so we went with the turf race,” Riv-elli said. “And here we are, unless he just doesn’t like the turf for some reason. I worked him three-eighths, (jockey) Irad (Ortiz) worked him and said he loved him.”

Rivelli purchased Wellabled for $340,000 at the OBS April sale on behalf of owner Carolyn Wilson.

“He’s probably one of my best horses that I’ve had in a while,” Rivelli said. “He was a big, athlet-ic looking horse and we got in a bidding war with somebody and we won. (Wilson) was there with me, she was giving me the go-ahead.”

Wellabled shipped to Saratoga shortly after his maiden victory on the synthetic Polytrack at Arling-ton, where he led the field gate-to-wire in a 5-fur-long maiden July 9. Rivelli said the colt never put a foot wrong from the time he arrived after the sale to training, paddock- and starting-gate schooling.

“Since Day 1 when I ran him at Arlington I was confident he was going to win,” he said. “Trained forwardly, never missed a beat. He broke out of the gate, handled himself great in the paddock, never turned a hair, opened up and just was gone . . . it was no contest that day.”

The starting gate of the Skidmore will be cocked and loaded with speed horses, as Wellabled, Iron Mane and Freud’s Friend all showed speed in maid-en wins. The maiden Gemologister also showed speed before finishing fourth in a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint at Saratoga Aug. 11.

Rivelli isn’t concerned with the projected speed.“We’ve got the rail so we’re going to go, we’ll

be gone,” Rivelli said. “I don’t think there’s any-body as fast as him, he’s really fast. It’s just how comfortable he gets up front, how much pressure

he gets. I’m assuming Irad will be able to handle it from there. It will be a contest; it ain’t going to be so easy.”

One who won’t make it easy for Wellabled is the only New York-bred, Freud’s Friend, who won over the track and trip July 29. Trained by Charlton Baker, the Freud gelding raced on the lead and won by a nose.

Freud’s Friend drew post five in the field of six, which Baker said is key.

“We got a great post on the outside,” Baker said Thursday. “We got pace. I think I’m going to leave it up to (jockey) Manny (Franco), see how it plays at the break. He’s got pace from the outside. He’ll rate a little bit off it. On the grass he should do that, it’s not too much kickback. If they go he can always sit, and he’s got a great post from the outside, we can do both.”

Trainer Wesley Ward, who won Wednesday’s Bolton Landing for 2-year-old fillies going the same trip on the Mellon Turf Course with Con Te Partiro, sends out Calumet Farm’s homebred Iron Mane. The son of The Factor and the 9-5 favorite on the morning line won his debut going 5 furlongs on the turf at Indiana Grand July 23.

Harlan’s Harmony makes his second start for trainer John Terranova after winning going 6 fur-longs on the turf at Belmont Park July 14.

Gemologister and first-time starter Mbrace Grace, both maidens trained by Jaime Mejia, com-plete the field.

BY TOM LAWSheila Rosenblum sat on the edge

of her seat in her box past the finish line, knees together, arms around her legs and head down. She could barely stand to watch the start of Thursday’s $100,000 Union Avenue Stakes, ever concerned for a good start for Hot City Girl.

“I can’t be pidgeoned in so any-body who is with me knows I can’t be boxed in,” the owner said. “Oh yes, I was nervous.”

Not far away Bob Ribaudo saw the break and couldn’t be faulted if he didn’t want to watch Quezon and the other five New York-bred fillies and mares make their way up the back-stretch in the 6 1/2-furlong Union Avenue.

What the trainer saw was Court Dancer, the only member of the field

expected to put any early pressure on Hot City Girl, cock her head to the right before the bell and walk out of the gate at the start.

“Whew, right there, that was it,” Ribau-do said of the start, which left Hot City Girl without any pressure on the lead and cruis-ing through manageable fractions. “It was a tough task without the help, absolutely.”

Quezon saved ground, tried to engage the leader near the quarter pole but couldn’t get past like she did last time and Hot City Girl went on to win the Union Avenue un-der Jose Ortiz by 1 3/4 lengths.

Rosenblum, who also campaigned Hot City Girl’s half-sister and 2015 champi-on female sprinter La Verdad in her Lady Sheila Stable colors, admitted to not feel-ing much relief despite the bad start from Court Dancer and lack of pressure early.

“It’s amazing that sometimes a horse can still come from behind and win so no, it didn’t make me any more relaxed,” Rosen-blum said. “Until we went across the finish line I was probably as nervous as ever.”

Hot City Girl crossed the finish in front for the first time since mid-November, when she shipped from trainer Linda Rice’s

barn at Belmont to Laurel Park to win the 7-furlong Safely Kept. That was her third straight win and it earned the daughter of City Zip a trip to California for the Grade 1 La Brea on the opening card of Santa Anita Park’s winter-spring meeting.

Hot City Girl led the La Brea by 2 lengths in midstretch but got caught late by Birdatthewire and wound up second, beat-en a half-length but 1 1/4 lengths in front of Grade 1 winner Cavorting.

“That was heartbreaking, she bled a lit-tle bit in the race and it’s tough to ship from the East Coast to the West Coast,” Rice said of the La Brea. “We really wanted to get her that Grade 1 win that La Verdad never got and I thought as a 3-year-old filly that was a great spot.”

Rice admitted she and Rosenblum reached a bit when they tried Hot City Girl in Laurel’s Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie going 7 furlongs in mid-February, where she gave up the lead easily and finished sixth.

“She was over the top and we just ran her one too many times,” Rice said. “So I sent her home and turned her out for three months. Frankly I told Sheila, ‘Look if we can go backward, we wouldn’t have run her in the Fritchie.’ We were kind of in an awk-ward position with La Verdad at the time,

run her, not run her. We ended up re-tiring her, so we ran this filly instead and it didn’t work out very well.”

Rice picked the Dancin Renee against state-breds going 6 furlongs July 2 at Belmont for Hot City Girl’s return. Bet down to 7-5, she couldn’t handle Haveyougoneaway and Que-zon in the stretch and finished third.

The loss wasn’t as bad as it seemed. Haveyougoneaway followed up

her Dancin Renee victory with a score against open company in the Grade 2 Honorable Miss at Saratoga July 27 and Quezon was a state-bred stakes winner who’d never finished worse than fourth in her seven starts.

Bred by Eklektikos Stable, Hot City Girl continued to progress after her break and the Dancin Renee, at a slightly slower rate than her more accomplished half-sister, but progress nonetheless. Rice picked the Union Avenue, favoring the more than six weeks between races versus the 25-day gap between the Dancin Renee and the Honorable Miss, a race La Verdad won last year before she was disqualified for a clenbuterol positive.

“Turning her out turned out to be the right move; it worked out very well,” Rice said. “When we turned out La Verdad for three months she would come back in career best form. We were hoping we’d get some im-provement with this filly as well, it just took her a little longer. We were disappointed in her first race back but hopefully we’ve got her on track now.”

The lack of any early pace pres-sure certainly helped get Hot City Girl back to the winner’s circle, but as the only member of the field with a graded stakes victory she was a clear standout. She stood out in the pad-dock, too, warming up just a touch before the call for riders up.

Ortiz gave her a good warm-up af-ter the post parade, breaking from the pony and galloping from the eighth pole under the wire and most of the way around the turn. Court Dancer and Familyofroses got similar warm-ups, while Quezon, who came to the paddock and went to the post parade with cotton in her ears, stayed with the pony for the preliminaries.

Hot City Girl got two taps on the

shoulder from Ortiz leaving the gate and was in front by nearly 2 lengths before the field ran a sixteenth of a mile.

“Plan A was to sit second, but the other horse with speed didn’t break well,” Ortiz said. “So I took charge when she was taken out of the race.”

Hot City Girl clicked off a :22.46 opening quarter as Hot House Rose and Dr. Fager’s Gal tracked. Quezon was close, too, racing about 4 lengths back as the field entered the far turn.

“The speed didn’t show up,” Rice said. “Watching I said, ‘Wow, the 4 didn’t break.’ Obviously we were pleased. That put her in her favorite position; she’s done her best work on the front end like La Verdad. She has rated and won from off the pace be-fore, but it’s not her A game. She’s like her sister, so much natural speed that she just puts herself there.”

Franco guided Quezon inside of Dr. Fager’s Gal and Hot House Rose past the half in :45.17 around the bend and tipped out past the quar-ter pole. Ortiz gave a peek under his right arm just before pointing Hot City Girl to the finish, went left-hand-ed just outside the eighth pole while Franco shook up Quezon and went right-handed to try and close the gap.

Hot City Girl led by 2 lengths at the eighth pole and maintained that margin until just before the wire while Ortiz hand rode the chestnut fil-ly to the line. The Union Avenue was his fourth win of the day and moved him into a tie atop the rider standings with his brother Irad Ortiz Jr. They each have 32 winners, four more than John Velazquez and Javier Castellano in a race that could get interesting in the final 16 days of the meet.

The last time Breaking Bread was seen on the racetrack she finished second, beaten 9 3/4 lengths by eventual Grade 1 winner Carina Mia, in her late October debut at Keeneland. The 3-year-old Quali-ty Road filly returned in the third race Thursday at Saratoga Race Course and won the 6 1/2-furlong maiden for owner Justice Family Racing and train-er Al Stall Jr.

race and gave her tons of time,” Stall said. “She’s a huge filly with a lot of quality. The Justices are good with the time and we gave her all the time. Now hopefully she’s on track.”

Breaking Bread, a homebred out of the Indian Charlie mare Cathy’s Corn-bread, hopped a bit at the break, but rushed into contention from her inside post to track dueling leaders Chase Motto and Felini through a :21.92 quarter.

Shaun Bridgmohan edged Breaking Bread to the outside around the turn, passed a spent Chase Motto and took aim at Felini past the half in :44.51. Breaking Bread and Felini came into the stretch on even terms.

A few taps on the right shoulder fol-lowed by a few strikes on her left side from Bridgmohan and Breaking Bread stuck a nose in front. Although she ran with her head cocked to the right for much of the stretch run, Breaking Bread prevailed by a half-length as the 7-5 favorite.

“She’s a stakes type as we go down the road,” Stall said, watching the re-play in the clubhouse. “She’ll go to Keeneland and run in a regular allow-ance race.”

Breaking Bread gave Stall his third win at the meet from just eight starters.

“It’s typical horse racing,” he said. “Some things good, some things not so good. We’re happy to be finishing up this second book with three wins and we got the majority of our stable to run in the last condition book, so we have a few more pops at it. We’re good to go, happy.”

• No one celebrated the stretch run of the opener, a $32,000 claimer going 11 furlongs on the grass, louder than the partners of Zilla Racing Stables.

On their feet with hands in the air, they cheered as Winter Springs swung three-wide into the straight, gobbling up his early 9 1/2-length deficit and striding away to a 1 1/4-length victory.

After getting their picture taken, the 31 Zilla partners on hand congratu-lated trainer Raymond Handal, who scored his first victory at Saratoga and only the seventh of his career.

“Oh man, it just feels surreal at this point,” Handal said as the win-ner’s circle cleared. “I really feel for-tunate to have good owners and good horses that put me in a position to run up here and be competitive. It’s just a blessing.”

Handal went out on his own at the end of the 2014 Saratoga meet after working with Tony Dutrow and Tom Morley. He saddled three horses last season with one third. Winter Springs is only his second runner this year from his barn of six, four of which are owned by Mike Piazza’s Zilla Racing Stables.

“Zilla, we got involved back when I was with Tom Morley,” Handal said. “I galloped his horses for him right before I started training. Mike and I really communicated well and he respected me as a horseman and when I decided to go off and train, he decided to give me a shot. He went partners on a horse, just took a little piece, 25-percent of a horse and we had some fun with him, won a few races, made some money.

“At the beginning of this year, we decided to start getting more involved with the claiming,” Handal contin-ued. “He fully supported me and is confident in me as a trainer. He lets me pick them out and as long as he’s OK with them, we go ahead and drop. He’s been awesome. It’s a pleasure to train horses for owners like him.”

Handal and Zilla claimed the French-bred 4-year-old Winter Springs from Chad Brown for $25,000 at Saratoga July 23. Thursday’s vic-tory is the first for the Stormy River

gelding since an allowance score at France’s Marseille Borely Racecourse in September 2014. Handal added blinkers Thursday and stretched Win-ter Springs out to 1 3/8 miles.

“I wish I could say I claimed him with the intent to stretch him out, it just happened that way,” Handal said. “He’s a very athletic horse and I don’t know necessarily the distance made the difference today, but he’s a nice horse. Chad does a good job with his horses and I know when I claim off of him I’m going to have a

horse after the race. I liked the way he looked, his European form, he looked consistent in America with the figures he was running.

“When I claim a horse, one of the most important things is they’re con-sistently running the same race . . . Hopefully if you can improve them a little bit, that’s a perk, too. I want to be able to claim them and be good enough to win without needing to im-prove them.”

• Very Fashionable strolled around the paddock before the fifth, a state-bred maiden special for 2-year-old fillies going 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass. Ears pricked but head level, she stood calm while being tacked up, her weight limply shifting side to side as the girth was tightened.

The dainty chestnut daughter of Old Fashioned walked out of the paddock with Jose Ortiz aboard as if she was going on a leisurely trail ride, walking into the gate without a fuss. She transformed when the gate opened, exploding from the start and staying in front en route to a 1 ¾-length victory.

Trainer Mike Hushion was ab-sent for the victory, as he was feel-ing ill, but owner and breeder Barry Schwartz met the filly in the winner’s circle.

“I finally won a race, so that’s pretty good,” Schwartz said as he watched the replay. “I felt confident even though it’s hard to handicap 10 maidens.”

Schwartz purchased the Tale Of The Cat mare Delectable Cat in foal to Old Fashioned at the 2014 Keene-land January horses of all ages sale. Two months later Very Fashionable was born.

“She trains very well,” Schwartz said. “Nothing seems to bother her, nothing upsets her, and she ran just like she trained.”

• Night Officer finally found his spot. After scratching from the Lucky Coin Stakes July 25 and a 5 1/2-fur-long off-the-turf allowance-optional at Saratoga Aug. 1, Night Officer got his favorite type of late-closing trip to win the eighth.

Holding his 3-year-old daughter Reagan, who clutched a stuffed pony and hugged her father closely, trainer Bruce Brown beamed as he walked onto the track to see Night Officer gallop back to the winner’s circle after winning the 5 1/2-furlong turf allow-ance-optional. Reagan’s twin sister Riley tailed him closely after the win photo was taken and while her father discussed Night Officer.

“With turf horses like this you have to be patient with them,” Brown said about finding the right spot for the 8-year-old gelding. “But he showed up today for sure.”

Night Officer’s last start was the Jim McKay Turf Sprint at Pimlico May 20, where he finished fourth be-hind Maryland legend Ben’s Cat.

“He came out of that last race with some feet issues, he had bruised-up feet,” Brown said. “So it took us a while to get him over that. We put some new shoes on him, and it took a while but it’s finally paid off.”

Night Officer broke from post No. 6 and dropped back from the early pace battle between Sandy’z Slew, Angry Moon, Saratoga Dreamer and

Mosler, who ran in a tight bunch through an opening quarter in :22.28. Night Officer cruised along the out-side next to Flashaway, and began inching forward as they ran into the turn. Rounding into the stretch, Night Officer ran to the far outside, the early front-runners forming a wall as they drove to the finish.

Angry Moon came through the middle of the mad dash as Night Of-ficer bore down along the outside. Jockey Jose Ortiz scrubbed on Night Officer’s neck as they approached the wire and the pair held off a late run from Flashaway to win by half-length.

“He likes to sit in behind, relax and then swing out and make his run, so it really went exactly as planned,” Brown said. “He breaks good, but when he’s too close to the pace he kind of ruins his race, so it was good that Jose kind of got him back in be-hind those horses.

“I was riding,” Brown added with a laugh, referring to the tight finish.

Watching horses and contemplating trainers, Kidd Breeden leaned back in his golf cart and sighed, “And everybody wants to be a horse trainer.”

We were in the midst of talking about picking spots for horses, wondering if it’s better to run a week early in an easier race or a week later in a tougher race. We never really came up with an an-swer as the agent drove off to pick up Kendrick Car-mouche after he breezed Reporting Star for Eliza-beth Voss and I went to chase down Jimmy Jerkens for a Fasig-Tipton Stable Tour.

I thought about what Breeden said, as Jerkens walked the length of his shedrow, pointing at the brawn of Effinex and the refinement of Jay Gatsby.

In a way, Breeden might be right, perhaps, all of us want to be horse trainers.

For me, sure, but only on my terms. These terms . . . For starters, all the horses are like Effinex and

Jay Gatsby. We go to a little track in the spring and fall and

a short summer stop in the middle. Part Keeneland, part Saratoga, part Goodwood and part Galway. There is no winter racing, because we don’t need the money and the horses need a break.

Men wear suits, women wear hats and kids get in for free.

Horses go long. Pillows of straw puff in front of the stalls, like the

old days, deep and cozy where grooms take naps in the afternoon and use the pillows to start bedding down stalls the next morning.

We take the horses for long walks before they train, longer after they train.

The exercise riders have patience like Shug’s girls and use their legs like Phillip Dutton. They banter like Rodney Paine and smile like Lorna Chavez. The grooms are old, young, wise and energetic. They show up on time, get two days off a week and they tell great stories.

We cook oats and make weekly mashes. The smell makes us want to sit down for Sunday brunch.

The races in the condition book go, there aren’t any extras. We point for each race, knowing it will fill. Unplanned breezes? No need, because there is always a plan. Like training a stakes horse, you know the target. Every horse runs when you want them to run.

The racing secretary doesn’t count your starts and cut your stalls. The agents tell the truth. The bettors win big. And all the jockeys listen.

Trainers come back at night, just to see how the horses are doing, to enjoy the solitude and appreci-ate their craft.

There is no claiming game. My son works with me, but not because he

can’t do anything else, hell, he’s got a masters from Brown, but just because he wants to spend time with his dad.

The exercise riders could have graduated from college but they chose to make a living here, loving horses and relishing the lifestyle.

Everything is leather, from boots to bridles. The mornings are crisp, a couple of layers peeled

off with every set. The afternoons are warm, with a breeze, never humid. Nights are chilly, enough for a Baker blanket, and that’s all.

Barn cats roam the shedrows, there are no mice. The track kitchen serves food like your mother’s

home cooking. Security at the gate recognizes you every morn-

ing, there’s no need for badges. Old trees. Shade trees. Apple trees. There are

trees everywhere. Grooms grow carrots outside the barns. The stakes horses take an extra turn of the pad-

dock, the crowd squeezes in to see their stars. Simulcast signal? All-sources handle? Takeout?

Nobody even knows what they mean. Each trainer has one division, never more than

30 horses. Old men and young kids play the game equally, respectfully.

There is an ocean breeze like Del Mar. And an Adirondack feel like Saratoga.

The only macadam on the backside is for the eve-ning basketball games.

Cars are parked outside the gates. There is a deep, forgiving main track, which

never gets churned up or run down. The training track offers a respite to the grind. The pony track alternates directions each day, Monday we go right, Tuesday we go left, Wednesday we go right...we take Sundays off.

It rains, but never floods. There is dirt, synthetic and turf to choose from

when you want, where you want. A walking path meanders miles, around the outside of the stable area, away from the combustion, horses decom-press, breathe fresh air and walk flat-footed.

Of course, there is steeplechasing.Paddocks of all sizes are everywhere, trainers use

them, horses love them. There is grass to eat. There is space – Horse Haven, Oklahoma, the

main track, Clare Court, Greentree, the harness track, the showgrounds and Yaddo too.

Turf slips? What’s a turf slip? All the horses have the fortitude of Wise Dan, the

eye of Royal Delta, the moxie of Fourstardave, the class of Rachel Alexandra and the kick of Zenyatta.

For advice, there’s Allen Jerkens on his pony, whenever you need him.

Owners pay their bills. The softball league serves as evening entertain-

ment, the barn rivalries heat up but are never heat-ed.

The racing pub is outside the gate. There’s never a line. And it’s always crowded.

The horses stay sound, the trainers stay sane and the game flourishes.

Sure, I’ll be a horse trainer. Who’s with me?
