A Note from the Agent

Recent findings from Tufts University's 4-H Study of Positive

Youth Development indicate that young people in 4-H are

three times more likely to contribute to their communities than

youth not participating in 4-H. Notably, the Tufts research

discovered that the structured learning, encouragement and

adult mentoring that 4-H'ers receive play a vital role in helping

them actively contribute to their communities. In Burnett

County, more than 100 4-H members and 50 volunteers are

involved in 4‑H.

4-H youth are a living breathing, culture-changing revolution

for doing the right thing, breaking through obstacles and

pushing our country forward by making a measurable

difference right where they live. Learn how you can Join the

Revolution of Responsibility at 4-H.org/revolution.

National 4-H Week is October 7-13, 2012

Attention 4-H Club Members!

The 2012 National 4-H Week promotional theme will be “Join The Revolution of Responsibility”. Your club has a great opportunity to promote 4-H and gain new members for your club. During National 4-H Week, clubs are asked to put up win-dow displays in your communities to help promote your club and the activities you

are involved in. Displays can utilize a store or business window, business lobby, out-door setting, or whatever works to get your message across about 4-H.

Displays will be judged, with cash prizes awarded to the clubs.

Don’t let your club miss out!

County-Wide Project Leaders Needed! Do you have expertise in a certain project area? Volunteer as a county-wide project leader. We need knowledgeable adults to serve as county-wide resource leaders in the different project areas available to 4-H youth. Project Leaders hold meetings a couple times a year based on member in-terest and availability. Often, these meetings can help assist members in creating their projects for the fair or simply as a fun educational workshop for members to learn more about that project area!

Already serve your club as a project leader? Do you already hold regular project meetings? Open them up to other youth in the county. Many clubs only have one or two youth enrolled in a project, but there may be people from other clubs enrolled in that project too! Team up and learn together!

Have a question about how to get involved?

Contact Dani for more information and resources.

Each year the President proclaims November Military Family Month. Military Family Month exists in order to rec-ognize and appreciate the sacrifices and commitment of the families behind the Nation’s service members. What better time to engage military families in 4-H programs and activities? Wisconsin 4-H Operation Military Kids invites you to show your appreciation by holding an event in your community. Hold a family fun night during your 4-H Club meeting and invite military families to attend. Public librar-ies across Wisconsin have access to books through the OMK Read Project. Contact your local library to collabo-rate on an event to recognize and appreciate military fami-lies in your community. A calendar of events and suggest-ed activities for Military Family Month can be found at www.uwex.edu/ces/4h/omk. Operation Military Kids programs offer a positive resource to military families in collaboration with partners statewide including branches of the military, the Department of Public Instruction, and Co-operative Extension 4-H Youth Development. To learn more about Operation Military Kids in Wisconsin, check out this informational video or visit www.uwex.edu/ces/4h/

Changing or Starting a New Club As we start a new 4-H year, families often think about switching clubs or starting new

clubs. We encourage families to find a club that works best for your family. You may

switch to a different club anytime of the year however; enrollment time is the best

time to make a change. Stating a new club is always welcome! New clubs attract new

people.

Requirements for a new club are: • Having at least one certified adult willing to provide general leadership.

• Having a minimum of five members from at least three different families.

• Complete a 4-H Charter Application.

If you wish to switch clubs, please notify your current club as a courtesy. Those inter-

ested in starting a new club, please contact Danielle Miller at (715) 349-2151
