So what do you do to maximize your garden or deck’s precious square footage? “I always tell my clients first and foremost to look at their space and figure out its purpose,” says Glenna Partridge, owner of Glenna Partridge Garden Design. “If you want to have your best small garden ever, it starts with the plan in order to achieve a cohesive look.” In the planning stage, the award-winning landscape designer says home owners should ask themselves questions such as: Do we entertain a lot? Or do we just want a quiet little oasis? Or do we love to have lots of casual summertime barbecues? Do we want to grow our own herbs? “Once you have your purpose(s) then you divide your space into zones to really maximize the area you have,” adds Partridge. Plant on a wall, a trellis or a divider. Cover your fence: Covering your fence with different vines offers a privacy barrier. “Although lots of my clients love English ivy, you have to constantly cut it back because it grows so quickly,” says Partridge. “A good one is the Black Eyed Susan, which features beautiful flowers or the Jasmine Ivy … it’s a perennial that grows really quickly.” Upcycle a ea market or vintage item: “When you have a small garden, think outside the box… A Baker’s rack filled with herb pots, an old table, bird cage or a beautiful watering can all double as planters. Unusual items in a small garden add contrast and visual vibrancy.” Add items of interest: Light your tree from below, add faux candles to create a silhouette in your garden, hang weatherproof art work to cozy up a small outdoor room or balcony… all of which add tons of visual interest to a smaller garden.

Make the Most of YourSmall Garden This Summer

Summer! It conjures up great memories of barbecues and garden parties. With Vancouver’s exploding proliferation

of condominiums and townhomes, our outdoor spaces are shrinking. So what do you do to maximize your garden or deck’s precious square footage?

“I always tell my clients fi rst and foremost to look at their space and fi gure out its purpose,” says Glenna Partridge, owner of Glenna Partridge Garden Design. “If you want to have your best small garden ever, it starts with the plan in order to achieve a cohesive look.”

In the planning stage, the award-winning landscape designer says home owners should ask themselves questions such as: Do we entertain a lot? Or do we just want a quiet little oasis? Or do we love to have lots of casual summertime barbecues? Do we want to grow our own herbs?

“Once you have your purpose(s) then you divide your space into zones to really maximize the area you have,” adds Partridge.

Glenna’s Small-Garden Ideas A planter with a large plant or tree: Most

people think a large tree will make a small garden look even more diminutive, but that isn’t the case. It can provide height and privacy.

Vegetable garden: If you love to grow your own vegetables, you certainly aren’t alone. “It’s one of the biggest trends this year,” she says. “You can plant a variety of vegetables to take advantage of the limited space you have by timing your plantings strategically.”

Ketchup ‘n’ fries plant: Potatoes and cherry tomatoes in one planter? Yes, says Partridge. “This is a little tomato plant

grafted on top and underneath you grow a white potato plant.” She cites the reason this works so well is that tomatoes are part of the potato family (who knew?) and are therefore compatible.

Growing berries: There are now small raspberry and blueberry bushes that can be grown in smaller containers. Partridge likes to use a salad bowl type of container/pot to grow them in.

Groupings: First rule of thumb – you don’t want everything on on e level. “You can use a pot for a pedestal by turning it upside down and placing it on another pot, or use a chair, a table or a variety of container heights to add visual interest. “You also want to limit your colour palette and choice of plants and fl owers or your garden will look busy, messy or distracting.”

Go vertical: When space is at a premium, go up. Plant on a wall, a trellis or a divider.

Cover your fence: Covering your fence with diff erent vines off ers a privacy barrier. “Although lots of my clients love English ivy, you have to constantly cut it back because it grows so quickly,” says Partridge. “A good one is the Black Eyed Susan, which features beautiful fl owers or the Jasmine Ivy … it’s a perennial that grows really quickly.”

Upcycle a fl ea market or vintage item: “When you have a small garden, think outside the box… A Baker’s rack fi lled with herb pots, an old table, bird cage or a beautiful watering can all double as planters. Unusual items in a small garden add contrast and visual vibrancy.”

We are captivated by the sights and sounds of water – it brings us peace and makes us feel happier.

Many of us yearn to live close to nature, yet we also want to be close to all the urban amenities city living off ers.

At Falcon Homes’ newest project, Falcon House in Maple Ridge, you get it all.

“Buyers are drawn to the fact that Falcon House backs right onto a protected park and Morse Creek,” says Nicole Buckle, sales manager for Falcon House. “Falcon House is also only a few minutes away from transit, shopping and entertainment, so it really is the best of both worlds.”

Backing onto the meandering Morse Creek in a park-like setting, Falcon House is a collection of 40 condominiums, ranging in size from 631 to 2,014 square feet, in the heart of this central location.

“We off er one, two, two-and-den and a few three-bedroom homes. Several of our homes off er mountain views to the north and are close to a number of parks and walking/cycling trails,” she adds. “In less than three weeks we have sold more than 30 per cent of our residences.”

Clad in classic red-brick, with black-trimmed Juliette windows and fully land-scaped gardens, these contemporary West Coast homes are distinguished by open

interiors. Welcoming and bright, each home off ers over-height ceilings (between nine and as high as 12 feet on the top fl oors), sprawling windows, designer wide-plank laminate fl ooring throughout the living space and laundry rooms with options for counter space and storage.

The master ensuite features frameless glass, mirrored medicine cabinets and in most residences there are also freestand-ing tubs and low-threshold showers.

For more than three decades, the mul-tiple-award-winning builder has built a reputation for constructing superior homes. Known for their building quality and craftsmanship, inspired fl oorplans and an artist’s sense of colour and texture, Falcon Homes is proud to present Falcon House.

“Fred Formosa is well known for his high-end fi nishing. The fi nishes that come standard in his homes are often upgrades in other developments,” adds Buckle. “Several plans off ering a double-ensuite design.”

Falcon House is showcased by kitch-ens that feature a stainless steel appli-ance package with an extra-large 36-inch fridge and built-in microwave, dedicated dining room spaces, closet organizers, private secure lockers ranging from 30

to 96 square feet, and outdoor balco-nies and patios ranging from 140 to 810 square feet.

At Falcon House every detail has been carefully planned to off er aff ordable living spaces. This is your opportunity to be part of a scenic and vibrant neighbourhood minutes from parks, shopping, culture, and entertainment.

Prices start from $241,900 for one-bed-rooms, two-bedrooms from $355,900 and three-bedrooms start at

$544,900. The Falcon House presentation centre, located at the corner of Brown and 224th Street in Maple Ridge, is open daily from noon to 5pm.

“The presentation centre has an inter-active monitor so prospective buyers can see 3D renderings and the various options available to truly customize their new home,” adds Buckle.

For more information, call 604-477-1500 or visit www.falconhouse.ca. Tentative occupancy is slated for September 2017.
