HOW WILL THIS WORK AFFECT TRAFFIC AND RESIDENTS?

During construction, there will be temporary lane closures, but traffic will remain open in a single-lane alternating traffic pattern during construction hours. Construction hours will be scheduled to avoid peak-traffic times. Two-way traffic will resume outside of daytime construction hours.

Every effort will be made to minimize disruption to residents, businesses and transit users during construction. Residents will be notified well in advance of any traffic disruption or utility shutoffs.

URBAN TRAILS (paved/unpaved) are separated from roads and trac, shared with pedestrians, joggers and in-line skaters.

BIKEWAYS are signed routes, usually on quieter residential streets.

SHOULDER BIKE LANES are paved shoulders on busier roads. They are usually marked with a bicycle logo on the pavement.

CONNECTORS fill in some of the gaps in the "ocial" bike network. They are often popular with cyclists, but have no special accommodations for bicycle trac. Personal judgement is required in determining whether a particular route is suitable for your skill level.

BURNABY NORTH STREET UPGRADE PROJECT

New sidewalks and urban trails will be funded by the City’s existing capital reserves.

v

When construction requires removal of a tree, the City always ensures that at least one replacement tree is planted in an appropriate location. The number of replacement trees planted will depend upon the size of the tree removed.

The Burnaby Transportation Plan is being updated now – sidewalks are a key component of the Plan!

Construction of sidewalks and

urban trails provides opportunities to create

new areas of green space and vegetation,

helping to meet the City’s commitment to address climate

changes and to support a healthy and livable

community.

Approximately 25% of Burnaby is parks and green space.

Curb bulges help to:Enhance pedestrian safety by increasing pedestrian visibility;

Reduce cross distances between curbs;

Encourage vehicles to slow down;

Visually narrow the street; and

Increase green space and opportunities for street trees, and provide locations for the placement of fire hydrants.

Curb bulges are traffic calming measures that narrow the street and provide additional pedestrian and landscaping space at key locations. Bulges can be used at street intersections and at mid-block.
