Baking helped Don Harquail regain his health. It might also help make him rich.

Harquail was curling with his team at the Vancouver Curling Club three years ago when he was stricken by a double brain aneurysm. It was, he says, like a nuclear bomb exploded in his head.

Surgery fixed the weakened blood vessels but repairing the damage to his memory, cognitive and motor skills took time. And baking.

The son of a cook, Harquail

knows his way around the kitchen. So as part of his therapy to repair his wounded brain, he opened his recipe books because he knew they’d demand his full attention, he’d have to follow their directions precisely, he’d have to be mindful of detail.

One of his favourite recipes was a baked nut, graham and maple syrup concoction that had been passed on to him years ago by a colleague at the Vancouver Orchid Society, another of his passions. Over the years he’d modified the recipe to incorporate some of the tastes he loved, like a dab of chocolate, pine

nuts, cashews, almonds. He didn’t have a name for his

creation, but it was always a huge hit at Christmas, or at special gatherings of friends and family.

One night, while looking for something to watch on TV, Harquail stumbled on a repeat episode of a show called Recipe to Riches, a reality series in which 21 regular folk try to win a $250,000 prize developing a favourite recipe into a commercial product for the grocery store shelves.

“It was so much fun, and a Canadian production,” says the

Burnaby resident, who ended up watching the entire first season.

When he saw an advertisement for auditions for the series’ second season, he paid it no mind until one night, in the middle of a fitful sleep, his head exploded again. This time with an idea.

“That little seed germinated something in my brain,” says Harquail. “I should try this.”

He went through his recipe drawer and sorted five favourites, including a chicken dish, but he always kept coming back to the baked nut bars.

“It has a uniqueness of ingredients,” says Harquail. “You don’t see many recipes with pine nuts.”

Harquail emailed his recipe to the show’s producers who quickly called him for a phone interview. He attended an audition at the Delta Hotel in Vancouver, bringing along 35 friends for support.

“They were so proud because they had helped me through a difficult time,” says Harquail.

“I knew something good was going to happen.”

He made the show.In February, Harquail was flown

to Toronto to tape his segment, which included consulting with the

producers and marketing experts to give his bars a catchy name, Golden Toffee Nut Gems.

Harquail’s episode, themed Candies and Chocolates, airs on Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. PT on Food Network Canada, and while he can’t reveal what happens, he says he already feels like a winner.

“I would have never ever thought of entering something like that,” says Harquail.

“I’ve got a real sense of pride that I had achieved that.”

There will also be feedback forms for people to submit comments which will be considered as part of the company’s formal application to the National Energy Board (NEB).

Kinder Morgan’s information sessions on the project started last month in Alberta communities. The Burnaby events will be the first of several public opportunities for discussion of the expansion proposal.

The company plans to twin the pipeline, which runs from Edmonton to Burnaby, to increase its capacity from the

current 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 750,000 bpd to allow for increased overseas exports of bitumen crude oil from the Alberta oil sands. The move would result in a significant increase in tanker traffic in Burrard Inlet accessing Westridge Terminal in North Burnaby.

Of the 1,150-km length of the pipeline, 25 to 30 per cent is already twinned, so the company will be applying to the NEB to twin the remaining 900 km.

Kinder Morgan will file its expansion application with the NEB in late 2013 which will include a potential corridor

for the twinned pipeline. If it gets the NEB’s approval, the company would come up with a detailed specific route, estimated in late 2014, which would go through its own NEB approval process.

If it receives all the required approvals, Kinder Morgan will spend $4 billion and two years building the expansion, which would then go into service in late 2017.

You can take the boy out of Burnaby, but you can’t take the Burnaby out of the boy.

When Chris Molnar hits Vancouver on Monday as part of the cast of Disney on Ice that will be performing its Dare to Dream show at the Pacific Coliseum Nov. 21-25, he’s looking forward to spending some quality shopping time at Metropolis at Metrotown.

Since joining the troupe in August, Molnar’s life has been a blur of bus rides, hotels and arenas, from Mexico City to El Paso, Texas, to Portland, Oregon, to Spokane, Washington. He’s learned to pack his life into two bags, one for clothes, one for his cooking implements and his beloved longboard, which he uses to speed his trips around the towns the ice show visits.

Not that there’s a lot of time for sightseeing, with up to three

shows on some days.Molnar, 23, says he

wouldn’t have it any other way.

Joining the cast of Disney on Ice fulfills a dream he’d had for a number of years, as he eyed the end of his competitive figure skating career. In fact, he sent in his first audition tape two years ago, but turned down the job offer that resulted because he still felt he had some winning salchows in him.

Molnar’s been a rink rat his whole life. He and his twin brother Nick played hockey at the Burnaby Winter Club. When they were five, their parents enrolled them in figure skating at 8 Rinks. Eventually the demands of skating, hockey, karate, lacrosse and the myriad other activities in which they

participated called for some hard choices. While his brother stuck

with hockey, Chris picked figure skating.

“I was good at it,” says Molnar in a phone interview from Spokane. “I was a little small when I was younger and I didn’t see myself as a big hockey player.”

Molnar skated competitively all over the world, including a stint in France. So he’s accustomed to some of the rigours of the road.

Performing as different characters in sometimes bulky costumes that must be changed up to five times in a show is another matter.

“It can be challenging,” says Molnar, whose characters include a paper boy in the show’s

opening New Orleans number, a waiter in a restaurant and a

prince. It’s also a lot more fun than

competitive skating.“You have to be focused in

competitions,” says Molnar. “A show is more easy going. No one is judging you. You’re not worried about your edges anymore.”

Which is just the license he needs to play it up a bit when he hits the Coliseum ice; more than 50 of his relatives and friends have bought tickets to the Vancouver shows. Some of them have never seen him skate.

“I’m looking forward to it,” says Molnar. “I get to show them what I’ve been doing for the last 15 or 16 years.”

• Disney on Ice: Dare to Dream opens at the Pacific Coliseum on Wed., Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. and runs until Sun., Nov. 25. Tickets are available for purchase at the box office, online at www.pne.ca or by phone at 604-280-4444.

A man caught tending a Burnaby marijuana grow-operation was given a 15-month sentence recently in B.C. Supreme Court.

Huy Van Dao was convicted in June of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking but Justice Jon Sigurdson found him not guilty of actively participating in the grow-operation.

On the afternoon of April 13, 2007, Burnaby RCMP executed a search warrant at 5990 Berwick St. After knocking, they forced their way inside and found Dao in the kitchen.

Dao had a key to the home and he had been in the house for about 30 minutes before the police arrived, according to Sigurdson’s reasons for sentence.

The one-storey house had a basement which was “entirely devoted” to a grow-operation and where 1,046 marijuana plants were found. There was

evidence on the upper floor that “would have made it apparent to Mr. Dao that the house was a grow-operation.”

The expert evidence at trial was that the grow-op was solely for profit, the plants were valued from about $392,000 on a pound basis to $878,000 on a gram basis.

Dao was not the owner or tenant of the house and the Crown did not claim he was a principal in the operation “but rather on the day of the arrest was a caretaker or gardener in the operation.”

There is no evidence Dao profited significantly from the grow-op but “the reasonable inference, of course, is that significant compensation was his reason for participating.”

His wife was with him when he was arrested, but there was insufficient evidence to find her guilty of any of the alleged offences.

Dao is 44, married with two young-adult children. He immigrated to Canada in 1991, became a Canadian citizen in

1994, his English is poor and he has only a Grade 7 education. He has no prior criminal record and this was a first offence.

Evidence from his children, his employer, Superior Tofu, where he has worked for over a year, his doctor and his accountant indicate he is “otherwise a hardworking family man and a good father.”

Sigurdson said he believes Dao is remorseful and unlikely to reoffend.

He sentenced Dao to 15 months to be served in the community with conditions including that he perform 50 hours of community service and stay home between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless working or doing other approved activities. On weekends he is allowed one four-hour period, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on either Saturday or Sunday, to leave home for errands or exercise. He also received a 10-year firearms prohibition and must submit a DNA sample.

Auto theft is down significantly in Burnaby where there were 25 per cent fewer vehicle thefts in the first six months of 2012 compared to the same period last year, according to ICBC.

Since the Bait Car program was introduced in 2003, Burnaby has seen an 84-per-cent reduction in vehicle thefts over the same period, from January to June.

In actual figures,

that’s a drop from 1,112 auto thefts during that period in 2003 compared with only 176 in the first half of 2012.

Provincewide there has been a 17-per-cent decrease in auto theft in the first six months of this year and since 2003, a reduction of 74 per cent.

Travel expenses lowest of four Burnaby MLAsWanda [email protected]

When it comes to MLA travel expenses, there appear to be no differences among party lines.

For the period between April 1 and Sept. 30, BC Liberal MLA Richard Lee (Burnaby-North) reported $17,711 in travel costs, Liberal colleague Harry Bloy (Burnaby-Lougheed) spent $17,740 and New Democrat MLA Raj Chouhan of Burnaby-Edmonds reported such expenses of $17,974.

His NDP colleague Kathy Corrigan (Burnaby-Deer Lake), meanwhile, reported travel expenses of only $11,097.

The biggest difference was her figure for “general travel” which is for travel costs—including transportation and accommodation and a per diem for food and incidentals—within B.C. but outside the MLAs’ constituencies.

Corrigan’s general travel figures for that period were $2,065 plus $180 in per diem costs. That’s compared to $8,774 for Lee, $7,573 plus $500 per diem for Bloy and $8,963 plus $80 per diem for Chouhan.

“There can be a whole bunch of reasons [for the figures],” Corrigan said, citing as examples where MLAs live and their critic roles.

While she couldn’t speculate on her colleagues’ numbers, she said her low figures are likely because she has spent more time working on committees that meet in Victoria or Vancouver.

She serves as the Opposition critic for public safety and corrections, and for a time during the six-month period of the expense summaries, also as critic for women’s issues. She also serves as the NDP’s caucus vice-chair, and on committees including ones looking at public accounts and the appointment of an auditor general.

“Certainly my travel, the lion’s share by far would be me going over to Victoria and back.”

She noted the MLA travel expense summaries don’t include expenses resulting from committee work. Those would be reported in the budgets for the committees “so my travel for those committees would not

be included and yet it represents a significant amount of work.”

Corrigan and Chouhan did not have any expenses for “accompanying person travel,” under which a person can accompany an MLA for up to 12 trips per fiscal year.

Bloy spent $545 for one such trip while Lee reported such costs at $1,341 for two trips.

All the MLAs received a “capital city allowance” to cover accommodations while in Victoria, and per diems of $61 per day while in that city on Legislative Assembly business.

Chouhan, Corrigan and Lee each claimed $6,000 in capital city

allowance, while Bloy’s was $6,195. Lee did not claim the per diem, but Corrigan ($1,257), Bloy ($1,332) and Chouhan ($1,336) did.

All four Burnaby MLAs also received the $1,595 allowance for travel and out-of-pocket expenses within their ridings, a set amount dependent on which of the five classifications the riding is located.

Urban ridings, such as those in Burnaby, receive the lowest allowance with coastal/remote constituencies receiving the highest.

The Enbridge pipeline proposal increasingly looks like it will fail due to lack of public support. In fact, as unlikely as it may seem, the Northern Gateway project may prove so unpopular that the Harper government could find it difficult to accept a “go report” by the National Energy Board, never mind consider overriding a “no report.”

But a thumbs down by either or both the NEB and the federal Conservatives won’t necessarily result in abandoning the objective of pumping bitumen across B.C. for loading onto tankers. Rather, it simply means the Kinder Morgan project becomes increasingly important as a fallback plan.

In fact, doubling an existing pipeline might be regarded by the oil sands industry and its federal supporters as an easier sell. They can argue that it has been operating for 60 plus years with little or no damage to the environment, that oil tankers have been plying Burrard Inlet for just as long without major incident, and that expanding the existing line is far less intrusive environmentally. In other words, expanding the Kinder Morgan

pipeline could be represented as a reasonable alternative.

To this end, Kinder Morgan is learning a lot from the Enbridge hearings in terms of not so much as what not to say about pipelines but how not to say it. Thus, for example, it can be expected KM will take a much different approach about any spills and leaks over 60 years of operation, and that it will avoid advertising mistakes like “disappearing” land masses. Just how the company will deal with the heavy and toxic nature of diluted bitumen, however, remains to be seen.

There are some different issues, of course, such as communities that have built up over the years around the existing pipeline route versus the need for a larger “safety zone” on either side which will require an expropriation of private property. And of course, there is the fact the line will be

deviated in some cases through pristine wilderness, that storage facilities at the Burnaby terminal will be considerably enlarged, that the Burnaby loading docks (where spills are more likely to occur) will be doubled, and that the tanker traffic in Burrard Inlet will be considerably increased.

We shouldn’t be surprised if there is an attempt to overshadow these matters by stressing the economic benefits of selling bitumen to overseas markets thirsty for fossil fuels. For the past several months business and industry writers have been repeating the mantra that piping bitumen west means money in the coffers of government to help pay for all those public services we now enjoy, and that the risks involved are well worth the rewards to be reaped.

This may continue to be compelling to some, but there is no disguising the fact that it does tend to misrepresent the economic and political reality at work; that is, compared to the money to be made by the oil sands industry and its investors, the amount accruing to governments is really quite small.

Some would even describe it as

less than chump change. Whatever, the point is that it is

highly unlikely that any money flowing to government would be used to stop the systematic dismantling or scaling back of public services, such as health care, unemployment insurance and environmental protection.

And, really, when it comes right down to it just how much money could we expect a pipeline to put into our provincial coffers?

How much is needed to render the risk to the environment acceptable?

These are matters raised by Premier Clark with respect to Enbridge and in her government’s view they apply equally as well to Trans Mountain.

But it does beg a more difficult (and, as yet, avoided) question: How do you calculate the point where risk and reward balance each other?

Indeed, is it even capable of calculation?

Bill Brassington is a Burnaby resident and husband of Janet Routledge, BCNDP candidate

for Burnaby North.

How much risk is worth the reward?

Marijuana reform advocates hope Washington and Colorado states’ vote Tuesday to legalize and tax marijuana sales will add momentum to their push for change in B.C.

While it’s not yet clear if the U.S. federal government will allow state-by-state legalization of recreational marijuana use – other states already allow medical marijuana sales – the vote has huge implications here.

Washington state estimates it would collect $560 million in the first year from a planned 25-per-cent tax on the sale of licensed, regulated marijuana through authorized stores.

If enacted, this could also cause a partial collapse of B.C.’s estimated $7-billion-a-year illegal pot industry, as growers relocate to the U.S. to avoid the need to smuggle.

Recently, the Union of B.C. Municipalities passed a resolution calling for marijuana to be decriminalized. They’d rather pot be regulated and taxed instead, much like alcohol.

The U.S. votes are a progressive move toward responsible marijuana use. It’s time for B.C. to take a similar step toward decriminalization, if not legalization of marijuana. The potential tax revenue and the opportunity to reduce law enforcement costs, and help unclog our court system is too much to pass up.

The poll results south of the border sent a message that U.S. drug policies are not working. As Canada’s drug policies follow the U.S. closely, it means ours aren’t working either – it’s time for a change.

Sensible B.C., a campaign headed by B.C. marijuana activist and medical pot dispenser Dana Larsen, wants to follow in the footsteps of both Washington campaigners and B.C.’s successful anti-HST drive.

It’s time we take our antiquated marijuana laws and let the people decide.

COMMENT

Re: Council decries treatment of veterans (NewsLeader, Nov, 9)

I read with great interest the comments from the mayor and members of city council regarding the situation at George Derby Centre, and veterans in general.

I agree with many of the comments regarding the treatment our veterans are receiving.

George Derby is undoubtedly underfunded. The recent movement of Licensed Practical Nurses from the HEU to the B.C. Nurses Union will likely increase their costs, and may have been a factor in their having to contract out services.

I wish, however, that council would take a more proactive stance rather than just having the mayor write letters “… to express its concern …”.

The residents of George Derby are, unless I am mistaken, also residents of Burnaby. I find it appalling that Burnaby, reputedly the most financially well-off city in Canada (more than half a billion dollars in reserves), refuses to be proactive in the care of its less fortunate residents, other than to insist that the responsibility resides at the provincial and federal levels.

The veterans each pay 80 per cent of their personal income to reside at George Derby. How can a city with a 2012 budget that funds, for example, $100,000 for Riverway Golf Course and $1 million for bus shelters out of capital reserves, justify writing letters rather than taking action?

My property taxes continue to contribute to a “rainy day” fund and are unavailable to those in need.

I am also puzzled that the mayor seems to think that there is some irony in that George Derby is seeking to rezone in order to expand the facility at the same time they are cutting costs. As a

neighbour, I am unaware of the rezoning application. In the past, such rezoning allowed selling unused property to facilitate the expansion plans. I would hope that this is not a veiled threat that the city would consider denying rezoning in order to voice their displeasure with the federal government.

OIL SANDS OUR TREASURE TO KEEP?Re: Oil sands are Canada’s treasure (Letters, NewsLeader, Nov. 9)

Contrary to what Ed Linstead says, public opposition to the pipeline linking the Alberta oil sands to the West Coast is not a “miniscule mob of selfish fanatics obstructing the economic future of all Canadians.”

The selfish fanatics are the

few who will have control and profit of shipping oil sands unrefined gunk out of the country. These “investors” don’t own anything and take no financial risk, for they borrow only created money—as all loans in fact are.

Not shipping our oil out of the country does not destroy incomes, but keeping all our oil here, refining it here, and using it here will be an economic benefit to Canadians. It will create many long term jobs and gasoline at the retail pump would be cheaper and not the deliberately inflated world price.

The oil sands can only be treasure if we use it ourselves.

First week will be free when new span officially opens on Dec. 1Jeff NagelBlack Press

Commuters will soon find out if the new Port Mann Bridge ends their gridlock gripes or simply moves Metro Vancouver’s biggest traffic bottleneck further down the highway and onto untolled crossings.

The new bridge officially opens with eight lanes on Saturday Dec. 1 and half-price tolls of $1.50 for regular cars will kick in a week later on Dec. 8.

The transportation ministry estimates the new bridge will cut commute times 50 per cent and save some drivers an hour a day.

But the full 10 lanes on the bridge and on the widened Highway 1 through Vancouver and Burnaby won’t be

open until late in 2013 because construction is continuing on much of the corridor.

And some critics say even when the full project is complete, traffic heading to those cities will hit heavy volume at the off-ramps, backing traffic up onto the freeway.

“My prediction is congestion,” Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said. “The pinch point will just be moved.”

He said Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver are all refusing to free up more road capacity in response – by eliminating parking lanes, for example.

“The highway is the access point and if that’s where people end up having to sit, that’s where they have to sit.”

But Port Mann/Highway 1 project spokesman Max Logan said much of the westbound bridge traffic exits at Cape Horn or Brunette

Avenue.“We’re not expecting

anything significant in terms of a pinch point or traffic bottleneck,” he said, adding drivers should see similar conditions they now see west of Brunette, until the entire $3.3-billion project is finished in late 2013.

It’s a different story east of the bridge.

By Dec. 1, there will be four lanes open in each direction running from Brunette over the bridge as far east as

200 Street in Langley – a doubling of highway capacity through Surrey.

One of the four lanes each way will be for HOV users, adding 20 kilometres where car pools and other vehicles with at least two occupants can bypass congestion. Registered HOV lane users also get a 25 per cent discount at peak times.

Drivers who don’t want to pay a toll will be directed over the

Pattullo Bridge, via the South Fraser Perimeter Road, which partly opens Dec. 1.

NDP transportation critic Harry Bains predicts heavy congestion at that crossing and in feeder routes in Surrey and New Westminster as a result.

“That is going to be a huge concern,” Bains said. “The Pattullo is dangerous and over capacity.”

TransLink has also warned seismic and

other safety risks could force the Pattullo to shut down before its 2020 target date for replacement.

Logan said he expects some drivers will shift to the Pattullo – at least initially.

“Come Dec. 8, once tolling begins, we may see some drivers gravitate to the untolled alternative,” he said. “We’re expecting drivers are going to test out the alternatives that are available to them and

make the choice of the one that makes most sense to them.”

Logan said some drivers may have been avoiding the Port Mann and Highway 1 because of construction delays and will now come back to it.

“We expect the Port Mann will be the crossing of choice because it’s going to be just so much faster and more efficient than it is now.”

MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADERJeff Wilson, of Festilights, installs some of the 23,900 lights being strung around various parts of Burnaby Village Museum in preparation for the holiday season. Heritage Christmas at the museum begins Nov. 24, featuring traditional sights, sounds and scents of Christmases past, seasonal entertainment and visits from Father Christmas.

A VILLAgE cOMES TO LIghT

Members of the BCIT Faculty and Staff Association (FSA) have voted 78 per cent in favour of a strike.

As the largest bargaining unit in B.C.’s colleges and institutes, it represents more than 1,400 employees of BCIT, including technology and part-time studies faculty, assistant instructors, technical staff, researchers, curriculum development professionals, librarians, program advisors and counselors.

They have been without a contract since June 30, 2010.

The union is seeking a collective agreement with wage increases and improvements in working conditions to address the needs of its members and help BCIT continue to attract faculty and staff with industry experience to train students to enter the job market upon graduation.

“Better salaries and working conditions are needed to attract career-seasoned professionals from industries where wages have kept pace with inflation,” said FSA executive director and chief negotiator Paul Reniers.

“Fair wages will ensure that BCIT can hire and hold on to the kinds of professionals who built this important institution.”

The strike vote was conducted Nov. 7 to 9 and saw ballots cast by 689 members.

“The results of this strike vote show that FSA members will not sit back and watch the erosion of the learning environment they have built,” said FSA president Teresa Place.

BTA seeking socks, toques

Socks, toques, gloves, scarves, cash donations and toiletries are being collected until Dec. 6 in all Burnaby schools and

Burnaby adult education sites for donation to the Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness.

“Burnaby teachers have supported this initiative whole heartedly each year and this is one of the most important ways teachers can assist the homeless and under-housed in our community,” said BTA Social Justice Committee chairperson Rocky McLaughlin, a teacher at Cascade Heights elementary.

The public is encouraged to bring donations to the Burnaby Teachers’ Association office during business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) at #115-3993 Henning Drive, Burnaby.

Construction of the Edmonds Community Centre is four weeks behind schedule due to wet weather conditions that prevented the contractor from completing roofing work last June, according to a city staff report.

The project is now scheduled

for “substantial completion” in February.

The new facility is proceeding on budget.

The building is being constructed at the corner of Edmonds and Humphries streets, and when completed will include a six-lane

swimming pool, a leisure pool with a lazy river for floating and water walking with or against the current, a hot tub, sauna, whirlpool and two full size gymnasiums. There will also be a 7,000 sq. ft. weight and cardio room with state-of-the-art fitness equipment.

Edmonds Community Centre due for February completion

Burnaby’s Footlight Theatre Company presents Grease until Nov. 24 at Michael J. Fox Theatre, 7373 MacPherson Ave., Burnaby.

The classic musical show, directed and choreographed by Lalainia Lindbjerg Strelau, will take audiences back to 1959 with its hilariously corny storyline of first love, teenaged cliques, fast friends and faster cars.

The production stars Lucas Blaney as Danny Zuko, Alex Gullason as Sandy, and Jennie Neumann as Rizzo.

Local cast members include Theo

Marx and Angela King of Burnaby, and New Westminster native Claire Wardle.

Remaining shows are Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 16-17 and Nov.

23-24 at 7:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday, Nov.

18 and Saturday, Nov. 24.

Tickets are $19.59 and available at www.ticketstonight.ca. Info: www.footlight.ca.

Over the next several years, the B.C. government predicts there will be one million job openings in the province. One of them has your name on it.

Finding that job is a job in itself.

It’s a Darwinian process in which only the strong thrive, preparation pays off and decisions made years ago can help or hinder you.

In 2008, the average age of the B.C. workforce was just over 40 years old. As those workers edge ever closer to retirement, opportunities are opening up for new workers.

The top five areas for expected employment growth are occupations in sales and service; business, finance and administration; trades, transport and equipment operators; science-related fields; management.

A majority of those openings will require post-secondary credentials such as a university degree, college diploma or a trades apprenticeship.

In Metro Vancouver 65 per cent of jobs in 2008 required post-secondary education.

Since 2003, apprenticeships for skilled trades have almost tripled.

Having the proper educational credentials might get you an interview, but it doesn’t guarantee employment.

That’s where preparation, persistence and presentation can pay off.

According to allbusiness.com, an online resource for small businesses, job seekers have to be proactive, seeking out the job of their dreams rather than waiting for that job to find them.

Take an inventory of your interests, skills, accomplishments, goals and values. Recognize what makes you a unique candidate for a job. Target your search by matching those qualifications and skills with potential employers.

In fact, a recent survey of 1,500 recruiters and hiring managers by the online recruitment software company Bullhorn found that 30 per cent of them summarily dismissed applications from people whose qualifications didn’t match the requirements for a particular position. Another 21 per cent were turned off by candidates who exaggerated their resumes.

Looking for a job requires networking, putting the word

out about your job search to friends, colleagues, relatives. Join professional organizations. Tap into the resources offered by an employment agency. Many jobs are never advertised.

Again Bullhorn’s survey of recruiters found many of them are impressed by referrals from friends or coworkers. Many give the edge to candidates who will be a good fit into the culture of the workplace.

When contacting employers, be concise and precise. Make it obvious you’re the best candidate for the job. Be enthusiastic but not needy. And don’t look down your nose at a temporary position; they provide an opportunity to evaluate an employer while earning a pay cheque as well as put you in a prime position should a permanent job open up.

Of course, finding potential positions and sending in a resume is only the beginning of the hiring process.

The way candidates present themselves in the job interview leaves a lasting impression.

To ensure it’s a good one, arrive on time, be polite and look professional.

Be prepared. Do some

research on your potential employer and work some of your findings into your answers. Show that you’re up-to-date on the company’s current situation and be prepared to explain why you want to work for them.

During the interview make eye contact and speak confidently. Talk about your successes and what your actions achieved. Stay on topic. Don’t talk just for the sake of hearing your voice.

If the interview ends before you get a chance to make your full pitch, add those additional points in a follow-up letter or email. A relatively new and increasingly important factor in the job search are the social media. Sites like Facebook and LinkedIn expand your network of contacts, but they can also expose your foibles to potential employers. It’s unlikely a future boss would be impressed by your ability to party hearty every weekend, with the photographic evidence available for all to see.

As your job search continues, keep records. Follow up, but don’t pester.

And, most importantly, don’t give up. A million jobs is a lot of opportunity.

Finding a good job is a job in itselfLocal resources

Locally, there are a number of resources available to job seekers, from private employment agencies to government services to non-profit organizations.

The Urban Development Institute – Pacific Region hosted its biennial Awards for Excellence last month, which recognized amazing development projects from across British Columbia.

Among the winners was ParkLane Homes’ River District Centre, which won the Best Outside the Box award.

“Our goal with River District Centre was to take a unique approach to community building. We wanted this building to become a neighbourhood hub, and just a year after opening, we couldn’t be happier with the results we see today,” says ParkLane COO Ben Taddei. “Our team thanks

the Urban Development Institute and congratulates all the winners and nominees for their continued dedication to innovative and sustainable development in B.C.”

Other winners at the awards included Bosa Properties and Adera.

“I think all the award winners and nominees can take great pride in what the development industry has accomplished these past two years,” says UDI President and CEO Anne McMullin. “The contribution from our industry sustains a healthy urban fabric and a strong B.C. economy.”

The full list of winners is available on www.udi.bc.ca.

Emaar Properties Canada is building on their reputation for amazing homes with Wills Creek, a townhome development in South Surrey’s rapidly growing community of Morgan Creek.

Emaar is known for building beautiful homes, and this project is no different.

“There is not a building out there that will beat our quality,” says sales manager Enrica Paris.

The spacious townhomes, ranging from 2,158 to 4,700 square feet, feature Craftsman-style architecture, with cedar-shingled roofs, coarse granite stone cladding and herringbone brick pavers on the patio and sidewalks.

Inside, the rich hardwood flooring throughout the main level is one of the first things you notice. The 10-foot vaulted ceilings in most plans are another feature that contribute to the spacious feel of your new home. Huge windows let the light in, while the oversized doors maximize the space.

The kitchens are elegant and efficient, with custom-designed Shaker-style cabinetry and a large island finished with a polished granite countertop. That countertop is complemented by a handset textured natural stone backsplash and the under-cabinet and recessed lighting. Stainless-steel appliances are included, along with a stainless-steel canopy range hood from Broan.

Moving into the master suite, you feel like you’re entering your own personal oasis. The ensuite bathroom features an oversized soaker tub with a marble deck and a frameless glass walk-in shower with a rain shower head. The handset imported glass tiles in the tub and shower surround are chic and lend a touch of class to the proceedings, while the heated tile floor is especially wonderful on cold mornings. The Shaker-style cabinetry continues in here, as well as in the main bathroom.

That bathroom also includes its own oversized soaker tub and handset imported porcelain tiles as the tub and shower surround.

“We have the lowest price per square foot in the area,” Paris says. “It’s great for everything that is included.”

Currently doing presales for its ninth phase, Wills Creek has been very popular with buyers of all types. Paris says most of the people interested in this latest phase is downsizers, but she has also seen first-time buyers coming

through the show homes. The location has been an important

piece of the puzzle. Wills Creek is just moments from Morgan Crossing and Grandview Corners, which offer shopping, leisure and dining. Morgan Creek golf course is also right around the corner. On the property, homeowners have access to a heated outdoor swimming pool, an outdoor hot tub and a 2,000-square-foot amenities centre, The Creek Club. It includes a fitness centre and a multi-purpose room.

Buyers in this phase will be able to take possession in the summer of 2013.

Homes start at $539,900. For more information, visit www.willscreek.ca or call 604-542-8971.
