Atticus Financial is a leader in providingfinancing for energy efficiency based projectssuch as lighting retrofits and they are alsoactive in providing financing options for thebiomass sector, both of which help to reducecarbon emissions for their clients.

Ray Salama, President of Atticus Financialbelieves running a business that is proactivein reducing its footprint is not only good valuefor his business but for his clients as well.

What got you started thinking aboutsustainability?I actually come by it quite naturally – mygrandmother was my inspiration and a rolemodel. She was into recycling, compostingand always looking for ways to reduce wastelong before it became popular – I’m talkingthe 1970’s here. I guess it just stuck with meas being the right thing to do.

How did you decide what was mostimportant to tackle first? After completing the Climate Smart training,I realized that we could do even more toreduce our environmental footprint by furtherreducing the amount of paper we use andspending less time traveling, so it was acombination of those two things at the sametime. We try to utilize digital informationrather than printing out documents as muchas possible – we are in the financing businessand it takes time to change people’s habits

to realize that they don’t need a hard copyof everything in a file these days. The otherbig change is we have many of our leasing/financing specialists working from homeoffices now, so there’s less requirement forthem to commute to an office.

Do you feel this has any impact on howyou do business?Absolutely. We get a lot more done viaemail now – for example, we can send outor receive information from our clientselectronically, which tends to reduce paperconsumption. We’ve also been able to reduceour physical space requirements, recentlymoving to a smaller office closer to whereour key office staff live. This means loweroverhead and less commuting, both of whichare positive changes for the business.

What do you hope to achieve by makingyour business more sustainable? It’s a combination of a few things. First, wewant to “walk the talk” as they say – inaddition to the usual equipment and truckleasing & financing for businesses, Atticusalso finances energy efficiency projects suchas lighting retrofits, boiler replacements andcompressor upgrades, all of which reduceenergy use for our clients. The benefit toour clients is that their monthly energy costsavings are enough to more than cover themonthly payments, so it is cash flow positiveand environmentally friendly at the sametime – a double positive result. The secondthing we hope to achieve is just being one

more advocate for sustainable businesspractices, reducing our own footprint andencouraging others to do the same thing.

What are your next steps and goals? One thing that I’d really like to see is theacceptance of electronic signatures in ourindustry. It’s already starting to happen inthe US, so I hope that we aren’t too far off. Itwould be a huge step in our business not tohave to print out contracts and such and thenwe could make it even more sustainable andactually provide faster service at the sametime. Once we can sort out the legal andsecurity issues, my goal is to be one of the firstcompanies in the Canadian equipment financeindustry to offer the service to our clients.

What was your motivation for joiningthe Pledge for a Sustainable Communityand what have been its benefits? It just seemed like a no brainer – we arealready Climate Smart certified and thepledge was very much in keeping with ourbusiness philosophy, so we joined in thehopes of adding one more voice to thediscussion and perhaps we can encourageothers to do the same thing. The benefits totaking a sustainability pledge are not only thefact that you are doing something to keep ourbeautiful community healthy and sustainable, but you will also reduce your costs as a result. Why wouldn’t you want to do that?

Atticus Financial is a Pledge memberand Climate Smart Certified.¾

Burnaby Board ofTrade calls on PMO to workwith business on GHG reduction targetsBy Michael [email protected]

In advance of the upcoming United NationsClimate Change Conference in Paris, theBurnaby Board of Trade has submitted aletter to the Office of the Prime Minister(PMO), calling on new Prime Minister JustinTrudeau to join with other internationalleaders in seeking a meaningful globalagreement to address climate change withnew greenhouse gas (GHG) reductiontargets. The Board of Trade also askedthat government work with businessorganizations such as itself to develop thenecessary market-based strategy to helpCanada, and its business community, achievethose reductions.

According to the letter, the BurnabyBoard of Trade believes Canada will needto develop a plan for a long-term transition

to a low-carbon economy that ensures thecountry meets its international obligationswhile protecting and enhancing the dynamic, innovative economy we currently enjoy. TheBoard notes the importance of governmentseeking the input of the businessescommunity in creating such a plan, as itwill be necessary for businesses to play aconsiderable role in achieving any emissionsreduction targets.

“Through our experience with our ownglobally-recognized environmental initiative,The Pledge for a Sustainable Community,we’ve seen that many businesses are eagerto play their part in reducing GHG emissionsand be engaged as part of the solution,” saidBurnaby Board of Trade President and CEOPaul Holden in the letter. “By consulting withbusiness organizations like the Burnaby Boardof Trade and other Chambers of Commerce/Boards of Trade when crafting Canada’s GHG

reduction strategy, the government will beable to genuinely engage with the businesscommunity on this issue, encourage them toact, and leverage our existing networks toprovide the tools, education and informationnecessary for businesses to be successfulpartners in this effort.”

The letter was also sent to BC PremierChristy Clark as well as relevant minsters atboth the federal and provincial levels.

“As an organization that believes in thetriple bottom line of economic, social andenvironmental results, the Burnaby Boardof Trade is supportive of efforts to addressclimate change and increase sustainabilitythroughout our economy, and we lookforward to working with the government tohelp engage the business community to beactive partners in achieving Canada’s GHGreduction goals,” said Holden.¾

TheTruth aboutYour Group Benefits: HowEmployee Group Insurance Plans are really pricedBy Eric [email protected]

Let’s face it, insurance isn’t a favoritedinnertime conversation at most tables butit is highly valued and sought after benefitfor many people. We’re talking about GroupBenefits. Employees value their health anda dental plan above most other perks but isit really insurance? Or is it just a companysavings account from which to draw fromwhen needed?

Employee benefits plans are comprisedof two categories; Pooled Benefits andExperience Rated Benefits. The PooledBenefits comprise of items like your LifeInsurance, Long Term Disability, and Outof Country Travel. The Experience Ratedbenefits are your Health, Dental, Drugs,Vision and Short Term Disability.

Your Pooled Benefits make up thesmall part of your monthly bill and willcover events that could be catastrophic innature, such as when an employee(s) dies orbecomes disabled.

Your Experience Rated benefits makeup the larger part of your monthly bill andcover those events that are more repetitiveand predictable. For example, employeesgenerally go to the dentist 6 months for acheckup and will renew their prescriptionsevery 90 days.

Unknown to most, Insurers look at thesetwo categories differently. For pooledbenefits, the insurer ‘pools’ all their clientsexperience together to determine how muchmoney they will need to pay all their lifeclaims, LTD claims and other pooled benefits.

When pricing your Experience Ratedbenefits, the insurer only looks at yourcompany’s experience to calculate yourprice. In simple terms, after adding up allpremiums and subtracting all your claims, the insurer assesses whether you left themenough to cover their profits and expenses. If you did not, the insurers view this deficitas if they just lent you money. Essentiallythey will put you on a payment plan over thenext year in the form of higher premiums tocover your ‘debts.’

In many cases, the amount targeted to beleft over with the Insurers’ can be has highas 35%. This means that your company is, ineffect, paying them $35 to pay out $65 inclaims. When you are a small business, all itcan take is one family using all of their annualdental allowance to increase the premiumsfor the entire group at renewal.

The Chamber Plan is a unique programoffered to the Burnaby Board of Trademembers that can put stability in yourEmployee Benefit Premiums. Whether youhave one employee or fifty, the ChamberPlan pools your firm together with 30,000other Boards and Trade and Chambers ofCommerce members across Canada. Underthis kind of structure, your employees canuse their plan however they want withoutworrying about your company being singledout at renewal time.¾
