Happy NewYearfrom the BurnabyBoard ofTradePaul Holden, BBOT President & [email protected]

Usually at this time of year I write a columnor brief letter to our membership reflectingon the past year and looking forward to theyear ahead. But since I have already donethat in the latest Membership and ResourceDirectory, and will likely again at ourupcoming State of the City address, I havedecided not to repeat myself again here.

Instead, I want to take this opportunityto quite simply and sincerely thank our

wonderful membership for your continuedsupport and confidence in the Burnaby Boardof Trade. On behalf of our staff and Boardof Directors, I can say that all of us here areinspired and motivated by the passion ofthis business community – the dedication, tenacity, and generous spirit you all share inworking to make Burnaby great.

The Burnaby Board of Trade hasestablished a new motto this year: makebusiness better. We do this by always strivingto champion an innovative and robustbusiness community, which we are successfulin doing only because of the leadership ofour member organizations.

I also thank you for your participation inthe various surveys we conduct throughoutthe year, which offer vital information thathelps guide us in all that we do from the

The Pledge for a SustainableCommunity website helps businessesrealize these goals with tips, education andstructured steps depending on the level theorganization is at.“We launched the Pledge for a Sustainable

Community about a year ago and we weresurprised and thrilled with the amount ofimmediate uptake we received from ourbusiness community,” remarked BBOTPresident & CEO Paul Holden. “The goal ofthe site then and now is to showcase theenvironmental leadership of businesses inBurnaby, and to provide advice and tips tohelp businesses develop a more sustainableapproach. We realized after our first site

that we needed to build a better, moreinteractive web resource so that we cancontinue to engage with our pledge takers, increase participation, and create a platformoff of which we can springboard all of theBBOT’s environmental sustainability-relatedprogramming.”

With over 100 organizations from aroundthe Lower Mainland already having taken thePledge, the goal now, in addition to programgrowth, is to have existing pledge takersreport back on their progress and share theirsuccesses, which the BBOT will help promotethrough their new Pledge eNewsletter and inthe new website’s Success Stories section.

As part of the re-launch, the BBOThas also announced a new partnershipwith Climate Smart and Vancity to delivera training and certification program tohelp twenty BBOT members lower their

platform is a fantastic resource for ourmembers and the community. But it’simportant for us as a business association toprovide additional tools to our Pledge Takersand members to help them measure, reduceand quantify their sustainability performance.A partnership with Vancity and ClimateSmart has given us the tools to provideadditional value and benefit to our membersas we strive to become a more sustainablecommunity,” said Holden.

And it makes good business sense froma cost standpoint as well says Climate Smart

President, Elizabeth Sheehan.“There is a common misconception that a

low carbon economy will burden businesses,”said Sheehan. “But in fact the evidenceshows that reducing emissions is good foryour bottom line, not just your image. Casestudies from a sample of 40 Climate Smartbusinesses show a total annual cost savingsof $1 million and 5,000 tonnes reducedannual greenhouse gas emissions. In addition,Climate Smart businesses consistentlyreport significant returns in terms of staffengagement and reduced turnover related totheir sustainability initiatives.”

BBOTworksforMMBCsmall businesspolicyBy Cory [email protected]

Starting in May 2014, new environmentalregulations will mean that all businesseswhich distribute printed paper and packagingto consumers will have to register with thenew stewardship agency Multi Material BC,calculate and report the amount/type ofpaper and packaging they distribute eachyear, and pay fees to cover the cost ofrecycling that material.

The Burnaby Board of Trade supportsmeasures to reduce waste and encouragea more sustainable workplace, but alsohad concerns with the impact of these newregulations on its members, particularlysmall businesses, believing that the costof compliance in both fees and staff timenecessary for reporting represented an

excessive burden for many businesses. Therefore, the BBOT recently took theseconcerns directly to MMBC and discussedoptions for mitigating the impact of the newprogram on small businesses.

As a result of efforts like those of theBBOT, MMBC has decided to create a SmallBusiness Policy that will exempt certainbusiness from some of the costs andreporting obligations mentioned above. Theproposed policy would exempt businessesthat meet any of the following criteria:

a) Generate less than $1 million in grossrevenues

b) Contribute less than 1 ton of printedpaper and packing to consumers

c) Operates as a single point of retail saleand is not supplied by or operated as part ofa franchise, a chain or under a banner

Businesses that meet any of these criteriawould still have to become MMBC members, but would not have to monitor and counttheir annual paper and packaging use, andwould not have to submit a detailed reportto MMBC, saving them staff time and money. However, these exempt businesses would stillhave to pay an administration fee of $150.00each year.

MMBC is also creating a Low VolumePolicy consisting of flat fees and a simpleonline reporting process for businesses

Millennials. Just reading the word incites alittle fear in you doesn’t it. But why? Maybeit’s because nearly every article you’ve comeacross about Generation Y has told youthat we’re obnoxious, entitled, job-hoppingnarcissists.

Honestly, many of us are. And many of usaren’t. Usually we fall somewhere in between.

And you know, from what I’ve heard myparents’ generation was (is) exactly the same.My grandma’s too. In fact, I’m pretty sure thatevery politician in the history of ever, everyCEO, every struggling or once strugglingartist – every single person who has evertried, well … anything – was at least a littlebit obnoxious and entitled. The narcissismties in with that. If you’re going to attemptsuccess you have to believe you can achieveit. Confidence breeds ambition more oftenthan not.

Typically, the job-hopping part stemsfrom a combination of three key elements:1. The above mentioned confidence typicallyinstilled in us by our well-meaning parentsand elementary school teachers. (It seemedmandatory that every classroom had at leasttwo cheesy motivational posters and parentsexcelled at parroting their phrases.)2. Overhearing those same well-meaningadults complain daily how much they loathedtheir jobs. (You love yours!? Congrats!Apparently you’re in the minority.)

3. The extremely welcoming job marketand forgiving economy! (Even in print thesarcasm should be obvious.)

When you mix these things together youget a very confused individual. The voice inour heads gives us contradictory messages– one telling us how special and deserving ofthe best we are, the other begging for us tosettle for anything we can get. Add to thatan intense fear of making the wrong decisionregardless of what message we listen to andyou’ll have to forgive us for coming off a littleflaky. The number of career options todaydoesn’t really help either.

No matter how understanding though,it seems that some of the more seasonedprofessionals (cute euphemism, eh?) stillthink we’re of an entirely different species. They ask in some way or another, “How dowe work with you Millennials?”

It’s a fair enough question, I suppose. Inabout 15 years we’ll be making up threequarters of the work force so I assume theywant to figure us out before we’ve swarmedthem. Still, I can’t help rolling my eyes a little.

You know how you’re going to work withus? You’re going to watch and learn, just likewe are. Baby Boomer, Gen X, Gen Y, doesn’t

matter. If you think you have everything toteach and nothing to learn you will be hardpressed to succeed in anything. We all haveto make adjustments.

Human beings have been learning andadapting since the beginning of our existenceand just like every generation before us,Millennials are going to change the world. Weare. We just might have a different approachthan you did. We might use different tools, wear different clothes, and maybe operate atdifferent hours, but we will change the world. It’s changing already.

Stop seeing us simply as a demographiccategorized by hashtags and hipsters andrealize that we, like every group of youngpeople to ever walk this earth, are justforging our path. We’re dreamers. Many ofus are afraid to dream, but we all try. Weclose our eyes and see a future filled withopportunity. A future that we’ve built.

And I promise the majority of us aren’t sobitter as to try and build it alone. You had alittle help, didn’t you?

In discussion with MMBC, the BBOTvoiced our support for the creation of theSmall Business Policy and Low Volume Policyand advocated for the process of signing upunder these programs to be made as easy forbusinesses to navigate as possible.

Using ourabilitiesto reachinclusivenessThere are many stereotypes placed uponpeople with disabilities in the workforce. These false perceptions create barriersdiscriminating people with different abilitiesin working society. It’s time for a change!

The Neil Squire Society is a not-for-profitorganization that offers programs to assistpeople with disabilities so that they canlive independent lives and become activemembers in the workplace and society. TheNeil Squire Society offers a wage subsidyprogram called Working Together. Theprogram provides a unique opportunity forjob seekers with disabilities to be connected

with employers. By introducing a wagesubsidy, employers will be educated andsupported on the importance of an inclusiveworking environment and it will help eliminatemyths placed upon people with disabilities.

The Working Together Program is nota traditional wage subsidy program, but aunique model encouraging the developmentof change within society’s workingenvironment. While raising awareness ofthe importance of hiring someone witha disability, the program also providesemployers with a positive business case.Supported by the Report from the Panel onLabour Marketing Opportunities for Personswith Disabilities , employers will gain areturn on investment when hiring someonewith a disability. For instance, people withdisabilities take less sick days than someonewithout a disability. It lower’s a company’sstaff turnover rate, and provides companieswith a fresh pool of talent. When employershire someone with a disability they arenot just increasing profits, and obtaining

a valuable employee, but are raising theircommunity profile through staff diversity, and community engagement.

The Working Together Program is theonly national wage subsidy program thatis partnering with Boards of Trades andChamber of Commerce across the country. This relationship allows the Neil SquireSociety to access a network of businessesand provide them with the educationand support needed to hire people withdisabilities. Sometimes there is a fear ofhiring someone with a disability becausea working environment is not accessible. The Working Together Program providesemployers with the necessary worksiteaccommodations to help adapt the worksiteto the new employee.

Individuals with disabilities should notbe restricted when trying to obtain theiremployment goals. The Working TogetherProgram brings an invaluable opportunityfor people with disabilities to go beyondsociety’s boundaries, eliminates stereotypes,

and anticipates stronger prominence ofCanadians with disabilities in the workforce. The program will create a dynamicrelationship between employers and peoplewith disabilities. This is a great chancefor employers and society to see that adisability should not differentiate a potentialjob candidate’s qualifications from another, and that a disability is not an impedimentto ones abilities and talents. People withdisabilities will bring prosperity, inclusivenessand diversity to the working environment.Together let’s be the change!
