Hence, the birth of BURN FOR BRIDGE – our new volunteering programme tohave enlarge our existing pool of trainers and coaches in bridge.

The idea of having volunteers to teach bridge in schools came from Mr Liu I Nan.Having been under his coaching previously and now, I like and have benefited mostfrom his systematic approach and structured coaching and when I Nan agreed tohave a two 5-hour session course to teach students who are inspired to teachbridge at schools, I was elated.

This is the deal. We teach you to teach bridge for FREE. In exchange, you take upa volunteering assignment to teach bridge to secondary students for a period of 3months (once a week 3 hours). It could be your alma mater In addition, you will bereimbursed with a small allowance.

So, don’t hesitate. This is your chance to make a difference. Register your seat atour first course in June to get yourself trained as a BURN FOR BRIDGE bridgetrainer now! Email full name and contact number to [email protected] by 13June.

I would also like to extend the invitation to beyond students. You can be anyonewho wants to learn how to teach bridge. Join us!

_3Bridge Inspiration

In the recent Singapore Open TeamsChampionship there is one hand that caughtmy attention:

S: xH: xxxD: AQ10xC: Axxxx

At all non-vulnerable dear partner opens yourleast favourite suit, 3S; your right-handopponent tensed a little and passed. and youcould see your left-hand opponent's handsneaking towards the bid box, ready for a bid. What do you do?

Conventional wisdom says to keep very stilland pass, and hope the predator passes youby. In this case you hope they bid somethingand let you off the hook. But you know what iscoming, don't you? Your LHO is going todouble for take-out and RHO is going to pass itfor penalties. Maybe it's still wise to followconventional wisdom and hope it is not going tobe too painful.

When our team played against eventual winnerthe National Open Team, that's what LooChoon Chou did, after Poon Hua opened 3S.My teammate, I Nan who usedto tutor those two in bridge, doubled 3S for

take-out and his partner K.C. Ho passed itfor penalties. Loo stoically passed andadded "sorry partner, can't save you". Itwent down 3 non-vulnerable, costing 500.

I Nan had: S: voidH: KQxxD: KJxxC: KQJxx

and KC Ho: S: AQxxxH: AQxxD: xxxC: x

At another table, Desmond Oh, who isone of our upcoming youngster currentlylearning the trade from I Nan, came up withdifferent stratagem that his master wouldnever have dreamt of. Perhaps sensingwhat was to come, went againstconventional wisdom and raise to 4S! Theidea was to risk an additional 300 inpenalties. But the effect is that to the restof the world and their uncles, double of 3Sis for takeout, but double of 4S is forpenalty! And since LHO's hand would bedoubling 3S for takeout, he can't thereforeobviously double 4S for penalty!

He would have to bid 4NT for takeout insteadand that would get him off the hook!

Alas, the best laid plans of man and mousehave a very strange way of not following thescript at the bridge table. LHO couldn't double4S, but at the same time he judged hisaceless hand was unjustified to request atakeout at the 5-level, hence he passed. And RHO gleefully double 4S! His plans inruins, Desmond could only passed and ... loand behold! LHO imagined his partnerdoubles 4S on 3 to 4 quick tricks - after all,the opponents must have at least 9 spadesbetween them, didn't they? So partner can'tbe doubling on a spade stack, right? In thatcase there might be a slam with his hand!LHO thus removed the double and eventuallythey landed in 6C! Desmond chose not toquestion his good fortune and double it, hisgambit had just turned a HUGE deficit into abig positive for his team. In this cat-and-mouse game we call bridge, this time themouse caught the cat. Bravo to a newsurvival strategy. But I advise if you areabove the age of 35 and weak of heart it'sbetter not to try it - a heart attack is far worsethan any penalty I can think of. ♣

Thanks to Mr. Zain Moledina’s solution. Here is it, read on.

Hand 1East is the declarer in 6S contract with a H5lead:

WestS A1075HAK72D KQ52C 8

EastS KQJ8H 9D J1075C AKJ10

What is the best chance to make 6S?ZAIN: The basic strategy is to ensure thatthe contract always makes on a 4-1 trumpsplit. This can always be assured as long asthe heart lead is not ruffed.

After winning with the HA, declarer ruffs aheart with SK followed by SQ, SJ, SA, S10(club discard). This is now basically an NTgame. To avoid loss of communication,South plays out DJ, D10 and DQ.

Opponents can take the DA anytime theywant but South has his 12 tricks - Heartruff, 4S, 2H, 3D, 2C.

With a 5-0 split, declarer can still make ifthe opponent with the trumps has a5-3-3-2 distribution.

After discovering the bad break on thethird trick with the SQ, declarer abandonstrumps. He now wants to enter dummywith a high diamond in order to cash theHK immediately. Opponent can take theDA now or later and lead a trump (best)which is won by S8. (If the return is nottrumps, declarer can always do a trumpcoup against the trump holding opponentto win with the S7 or S8.)

In any case, declarer reaches dummywith a diamond, cashes the HA(discarding D), cashes 2 clubs(discarding D), takes the remainingdiamond(s). At this point, dummyhas SA, S10, H7 and declarer has SJ,CJ, C10 and 3 tricks are assured as theopponent has to play low trumps on thesetricks. 12 tricks total -- 2H, 2D, 2C and 6S and ruffs.

HAND 23NT contract by East. You may play it asdouble dummy against any lead that you maychoose from South and decide your stand onthe final score:

NorthS 10943H K852D J72

                     C 107EastS J72 S AKQ6H J743 H AD Q83 D K965C J98 C AK63

S 86H Q1096D A104C Q542

Does it make any difference if you play it atthe table after the following biddingsequence?

West North East SouthPass Pass  2C          Pass2D Pass  2NT         Pass3NT    All passed

ZAIN: Declarer has 4S, 1H, 1D, 2C with the CJas the best chance for the 9th trick. The objective for N-S is to make 5 tricks beforeE can develop his CJ. To do this,N-S must pick up 3Hs, DA and either CQ orD10 before E can take 9.

S's opening lead of the H10 is taken by the HA.If E runs the Spades, S must discard a the H9and a low club. If E leads a low to the DQ, Smust duck as the CQ is not established yet. Nomatter what E does, defence will get 5 tricksthrough the finnessable HJ. North can easilyexit a Club. E cannot strip N of the clubs as thatwill establish S's QC and now allow a D exit.

HAND 3

Bidding problem: What would be your bid onboard 3 (East-West Vulnerable) for thefollowing hand when you were seating at East(Haven’t you got something running acrossyour mind that might affect your decision?)?

North East South West Pass 1C

1H ?

You are East with:

S A65H KJ109853D AC Q5

ZAIN: My system forces me to pass andwait for partner's reopening double whichI will of course pass. Partner will surelydouble as S's most likely second passand partner’s singleton or void in heartsstrongly suggests a heart stack in myhand.

As S will have almost no points, he willfind it difficult to rescue N. Even if thedouble is rescued, at the very least, thegame contract of 4H is always available.

I reject a double which implies 4 spades(and short H) in my system.

LL: In my quiz last issue, I added in a pointfor hand if you were to be at the table: North

S 10943H K85D J72

East C 107S J72 S AKQ6H J743 H AD Q83 D K965C J98 C AK63

S 86H Q1096D A104C Q542

Does it make any difference if you play it atthe table after the following biddingsequences?

West North East SouthPass Pass 2C Pass2D Pass 2NT Pass3NT All pass

THE ANSWER:Yes. It does. The discarding of H10 or 9 is notthat obvious looking at 4 cards hearts indummy with two possible entries when partnerhas at most three hearts judging from thebidding itself. To give as many reasons that itmay be, a wrong discard by South is highlypossible.

On bidding problem of Hand 3:

Some of the students mentioned about no bidcan cover for this kind of hand in their systemfor which I thought I have posted the right kindof hand for them to study. On the other hand, there isn’t any kind of standard bid where it isagreeable by anyone of you and therefore, I amactually asking for trouble for this kind ofposting but if I don’t go to hell, who else?

For most of you, a pass seems to be all rightlike Mr. Zain’s and some of actual play at tablesbut the suggested solution is to take actionwhether it is a 3NT (some of you also bid 3NTeven after the pass at the table) or 4H (4H isfine if 2H is at least invitational in clubs) basedon the following facts:

• You are Vulnerable and they are not.

• They have diamond fit judging from yourhand after partner opened with 1C.

• North might mix up his diamond in heartsand so your partner could be just abalanced hand with a few hearts that mightnot necessary want to reopen his hand.

• Your heart holding is good enough tostand by itself.

• Your 14 high card points is good enoughfor a collection of game bonus.

• Re opening by your partner of 12 HCPs isnot necessary a good move in the long run.

Note: If the hand holding is a King less thenI would suggest a pass bid. ♣

Hard to find a defensive play hand forquiz, take a look on this hand and giveyour reason for your defensive play.

S 10xxxH xxxD AQT7C xx

S x S JxxH 2D KJ2C KQJxxx

Defending against 4s contract with thelead of CA, Cx-CJ,H2-HA-H4-Hx.Three rounds of trumps played whereyour partner followed with a trump anddiscarded a club and a low heart. Nextplay is D4-D6-DQ-DK.

What is your defensive play next, andwhy?
