hotel with Ed McClure and John Corcoran of Phoenix Hospitality Group. The total project cost is about $25 million.

Currently, Boerne has 435 hotel rooms to rent, which generated approx-imately $2,008,577, according to reports. The

Bevy is expected to increase that number by $120,000 in its first year at 60 percent capacity.

City Council members approved last year an incen-tive package worth more than $4.75 million that includes a 75 percent ad valorem, sales and hotel/motel tax rebate for 10 years, and 50 percent of hotel/motel taxes for an additional five years. Ken-dall County commissioners

also approved granting 75 percent of ad valorem tax rebates for 10 years, which could total $75,000.

“The new hotel project will dramatically increase group business into the Boerne market, and stop the seepage of Boerne guests to area hotels such as those at The Rim and La Cantera,” according to a press release. “The project will positively impact the Boerne economy directly with jobs, taxes and

utilities, with indirect impli-cations for Main Street, other independent busi-nesses and the city’s arts programs and festivals.”

Calling yesterday’s event an historic event for the city’s tourism and hospi-tality industry, Woods said the hotel will attract peo-ple who have never been to Boerne.

“We’ve just come off the best year for tourism. We did $9 million in revenue,

ran 58 percent occupancy, and that’s without a hotel with adequate convention meeting space. The Bevy is going to allow Boerne to have conventions and large groups that aren’t only going to fill up this hotel, but th at will overflow into our existing hotels. This is a great opportunity for people who haven’t had the oppor-tunity to come to Boerne to come here for the first time.”

Boerne ISD hires new HR officerDr. Elaine Howard has

been named Chief Human Resources Officer for Boerne ISD. Howard’s appointment was approved Monday evening by the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees.

At Hays ISD, Howard

Howard is active in

a number of profes-sional organizations including PeopleAdmin Executive Advisory Board, Texas Association of School Administrators, Texas Asso-ciation of School Personnel Administrators and Soci-ety for Human Resources Management.

City accepting hotel occupancy tax applicationsEach year, the City of

Boerne receives hotel occu-pancy tax (HOT) revenue from a tax that is levied on guest rooms at local hotels, inns, and bed and breakfast facilities.

Organizations that offer programs to attract over-night tourists to the city’s hotels and motels may be eligible to receive a portion of these HOT funds to sup-

port their programs. State law requires a

two-part test to meet the eligibility for HOT funds. Part 1 – Every expenditure of hotel taxes must attract overnight tourists to the city’s hotels and motels, thus promoting the city’s hotel industry. Part 2 – Every expenditure must fit into one of the following nine categories (1) conven-

tion and visitors centers; (2) convention registration; (3) advertising the city; (4) promotion of the arts; (5) historical restoration and preservation; (6) sporting events in a county under one million in population; (7) enhancing or upgrad-ing existing sports facilities or sports fields (only in certain cities); (8) tourist transportation systems;

and (9) signage directing the public to sights and attractions that are visited frequently by hotel guests in the city.

The Boerne Convention and Visitors Bureau is now accepting applications from local groups or businesses. The application can be downloaded from the city’s website boerne-tx.gov; on the Finance Department

page. City staff will conduct an

orientation session on Tues-day, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m., at the Visitors Center located at 1407 S. Main in Boerne. The application deadline is Tuesday, April 17, at 5 pm.

For more information, contact Jeanette Teague, Convention and Visitors Bureau assistant director, at 830-249-7277.
