Fr. Mahoney’s Message
BURLINGTON CATHOLIC
Dear Burlington Catholic Collaborative, Today’s parable is a prophetic warning to repentance in order to enter the kingdom. This sounds like a harsh Gospel. But it really isn't harsh. Let's take a closer look at it. Jesus doesn't get into the question of what percentage of people will be saved. Instead he talks about the effort it takes to be saved. I suppose we could read into his words and interpret them as meaning: “I want everyone to sit at the banquet table in heaven, but I want you to know that it takes personal effort, because it involves your whole person and a personal relationship with God.” To learn how to let ourselves be loved by God, and to love God in response takes us to the core of who we are. Do I accept the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Savior? No one can answer that for us, and no one can make it easy to do that. What we can do is provide a supportive environment, help one another through all the narrow gates, tell them about God's unconditional love for us, and assure them that they can do it no matter what their social class or IQ or status in the eyes of the world. That's why we come together every week at the table of the Lord. We receive the food that is God's word, and the food that is the Eucharist. We sing the same songs together, pray together, and reach out a hand of peace to one another. We are trying to open ourselves up to God's love, God's gifts. And we are trying to help one another - as parents do for children, as friends do for friends. Last Sunday Fr. Mark and I met with the Joint Parish Pastoral Council. This was an opportunity for us to meet the Council Members and to discuss our Newly Formed Collaborative. We discussed the Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan “Disciples In Mission” and the reasons why Collaboratives have been formed. We had conversations concerning the recitation of the prayer to St. Michael at the end of Mass which a parishioner asked about. It was recommended not to do this as we will be forming a Prayer for Vocations and a new prayer for the newly formed Collaborative which will be done instead. Information concerning the Knights of Columbus “Running of the Rose” which will come to our Collaborative later this year was shared. We discussed and viewed a number of Logo designs for our Collaborative. We shared that a new Collaborative Website is being formed and should go live sometime next month. The distribution of Holy Communion under
both forms in each parish was discussed. We will be forming a Social Committee to bring both Parishes together. Conversations will start up again concerning a new Mass schedule for the Collaborative. This is necessary as the Collaborative moves forward and the Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan, “Disciples in Mission” continues to form our future with less and less priests available to serve in our Parishes. I mentioned last week that we will have a Deacon Intern from Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary (PSJS) in Weston. This is a National Seminary for Second Career Vocations. Deacon Mason E. Wiggins will be assigned to our two Parishes. We look forward to his arrival in September. This is what he wrote about himself as an introduction: “Before coming to PSJS I worked in Washington DC for the past 30 years. I worked for 10 years in the House of Representatives for several members and a committee and then for 15 years in the Senate in various capacities. My last position was with the Senate Sergeant at Arms. I also worked in a law firm and as a lobbyist for a food safety organization. I am originally from Florida and have a BA and MA in philosophy and a JD and an LLM in agricultural law. “Earlier in life, after a year at the University of Florida, I entered the seminary as a sophomore. I was in the seminary for several years, but then decided to pursue a career outside the Church. I chose law. However, during that time I felt that God was not done with me. He was still calling me to serve Him. I have taken an ‘Augustinian’ path to priesthood. There have been bumps and diversions along the way, but a vocation must be answered. As an older seminarian my Bishop decided that the mature environment of PSJS would best serve my discernment needs and that of the Diocese. I am grateful to be here and pray every day that I may be worthy of my vocation and the possibility of ordination to one day serve the people of the Diocese of St. Augustine.” Let us pray for each other. God bless,
Father Mahoney

Completion of the safety course, Protecting God’s Children, is required of all volunteers who come in contact with children in the parishes and agencies of the Boston Archdiocese. This includes:
catechists, choir members, lectors, ministers of communion, etc. Protecting God’s Children will be offered on September 10 at 7:00 pm and October 27 at 1:15 pm in the St. Margaret’s Parish Hall. To register for a session, RSVP to Pat Harris at 781-272-5810.
ALTAR SERVERS FOR MASSES Now that summer is coming to a close and vacations are over, we are looking to develop a schedule for altar servers at each of the Masses at Saint Malachy Parish.
If you are currently an altar server or are interested in becoming a server, please send your name, telephone number, email and whether or not you are currently a server or will need training to Lauren Lambert: [email protected] or Kathy Keady: [email protected].
Once we have all the contact info, Lauren will be reaching out to create a schedule with your preferences for Mass times, and to set up a date for new altar server training.
CATHOLIC APPEAL APPRECIATION MASS On Sunday, September 29th at the 10:30 am Mass, Cardinal Sean O’Malley will be joining St. Malachy Parish in celebration and appreciation of all those who support the important work of the Catholic Appeal. Many guests are expected to attend. Each year the Catholic Appeal raises much needed funds for the Central Ministries of the Archdiocese of Boston. It is these faith-based ministries, programs, and services that enable the Church of Boston, under the direction of Cardinal O’Malley to reach across parish boundaries in the areas of Social Justice, Worship/Prayer, Christian Education, Pastoral Care, Church Administration and Evangelization. The Appeal is funded through the generosity and commitment of those who believe in these ministries and want to ensure that they remain strong. I hope that you will join with Cardinal Sean in this celebration of the Catholic Appeal.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
College students are often told by their professors that just showing up for class is not enough to pass a class. It takes more than just being around good teaching and educated people to learn well. Students must read, study, understand and discuss the material of the course. It has to become part of them if they are to really get a good education as well as good grades.
Faith has the same kind of requirements. Many peo-ple, including non-believers can tell you what the Church teaches and what you must do to practice faith. They can recite prayers and explain sacra-ments, morality and the Bible. But that does not make them Catholic. The words of the Gospel, the effects of grace and the practice of faith must sink in, transform and conform our lives to Christ. It is the daily process of conversion, turning away from sin and to the Lord.
If God gave grades for faith, what would your grade be? To pass, you must not take faith for granted, but work at it every day. We cannot just hang around Church; we must be the Church, a visible sign of the love of God present in the world. We are given the tools, the knowledge and the power to transform the world. Jesus is the teacher. Let’s be His best stu-dents!
