Greetings!
It was great to see so many of you at the “Meet us for Muffins” Open House on September 29 th.
Thank you for arranging your daily schedule to include a stop at the school first thing in the morn-
ing. If you were not able to make it, I encourage you to use your child’s organizer to communicate
with their teacher or call with any questions or concerns.
Our student registrations have increased allowing us to reorganize our classes and now include a
grade five and six class. We welcome Mr. McLean back to Bureligh Hill as the teacher of this class.
We also celebrate that Mrs. Whittington is now full time every day at Burleigh Hill in one of our
kindergarten classes.
On October 7th, all schools in the DSBN will have a Professional Development day. There will be
no classes for students. The staff at Burleigh Hill will work with our instructional coach, Mrs. McMillin
to examine our Assessment data and Eqao results, develop strategies for addressing the student
needs as indicated by our school data. We will spend the afternoon focusing on our math planning
for the next month moving from the Pattern and Relationship strand to Geometry.
Included in this newsletter are the EQAO results for the 2015 – 2016 school year.
School Council has started the DFS fundraiser (previously known as Lamontagne). Delivery will be
well before Christmas, just in case you are ordering gifts.
We will soon begin our monthly Sharing Assemblies where students are introduced to one of the
DSBN character traits and students are recognized for their outstanding demonstration of the
monthly trait. At our first assembly, students will be introduced to the trait: RESPECT – “We show
positive regard for and acceptance of others’ thoughts, opinions and feelings. We are inclusive and
fair in our treatment of others”.
I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving weekend and hope you are able to enjoy some family time dur-
ing the long weekend.
Sincerely Mrs. Linda Oakes
Halloween at Burleigh Hill
Halloween activities for students in JK/SK through 8 will not commence until after the second break (1:45 p.m.), at which time they are welcome to dress in appropriate costumes – those with a non-violent theme and which still meet the school dress code. If necessary, props (no pretend weapons please) may be left at the office until needed. Please identify such items with your child’s name. Weather permit-ting, JK/SK through 8 will have a parade of cos-tumes out to Parkdale Ave. down Mountain Road to Glendale and back up to Burleigh Hill. Younger stu-dents will buddy up with an older student for our walk. Please come out and take a picture of your child!! Alternatively (if it rains), we will hold the pa-rade through the school.

Grade 8 Students and Parents: Mark Your Calendars!
Starting high school is a huge step in a student's life. While it's definitely an exciting time, it also brings with it many questions, such as "What's life in high school really like? What programs and options are available to help me achieve my goals?" A great way to have your questions answered is to attend an open house. Grade 8 students and their families are invited to attend High School Open Houses from November 28 to De-cember 1.

October is International Walk to School Month
Lace up your shoes or snap on those bike helmets for an active trip to school.
If you live far from school, park a few blocks away and walk part of the trip.
If you ride a bus take part by walking to your bus stop.
Here’s a quick trivia question to have fun with at the dinner table tonight. Walking and wheeling to school can improve:
A) Health
B) Happiness
C) Stress Level
D) Grades
E) Safety
F) All of the above
If you said F, you’re correct! Walking and wheeling to school has many benefits and those are just a few. (Source: activesaferoutes.ca)
Tips to remember when walk or biking:
Look left, right and left again when crossing the street
Never run or dart out into the street or cross between parked cars
Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them and watch out for cars that are turning or backing up
It’s always best to walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible
Cross streets at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks
Watch out for cars coming out of driveways and alleys
If what you are doing has wheels, protect your brain – always wear a helmet
When riding your bike, ride in the same direction as the cars are driving
