Dear Friends, It seems to me that this magazine has the way of speeding

the months along too fast. At the end of August I’m beginning to think

about reminding people to send their copy for the September deadline in

time for the October edition to be printed and delivered. So I’m seemingly

catapulted from summer into autumn.

But of course, with Autumn comes another lovely change of colours in the

landscape. Harvest is in full flow as I write and so I’m reminded of the

Harvest Festival which is our annual celebration and thanksgiving for this

wonderful abundance (page 3). Also here Wouldham School Choir will be

putting on a special performance of ‘Songs of Praise’ at this celebration.

Another very special event this month is the children’s annual flower-

laying onto Walter Burke’s grave in Wouldham churchyard to

commemorate Trafalgar Day (page 3 & 19). Nelson is said to have died in

the arms of Walter Burke (his purser) at the Battle of Trafalgar.

You will find some seasonal advice for our gardens and allotments at this

time of the year from Sue (page 23) and also Butterfly Conservation tell us

how we can help butterflies. (page 27)

Apart from all the regular meetings and coffee mornings for keeping us up

together there are plenty of great events to go along to in October and dates

for your diary in November as well. After the holidays, it’s good to be

getting brains in gear again so KEN’S QUIZ (page 4) is the ideal

opportunity to tackle those tricky questions that I’m told Ken has lined up.

Don’t delay in ‘rounding up’ your friends/family for a lot of fun. So book

that table.

A special whole day out is planned at Wouldham Church for an ARTS &

CRAFTS event. Amongst all those activities, there’s tea and cakes and

special tours of the tower. It’s also one of those nice opportunities to

’bump’ into friends and neighbours.

As usual you will find that the Parish and Borough Councils and Schools

have all sent their news which is always good for keeping up to date with

what’s going on. And finally, for the Magazine, get in touch with me (see

opposite) if you want to advertise your business. We have some advertising

space available and advertisers report getting a good response to their

adverts.

Well, my brain now seems to have caught up with Autumn arriving so fast.

That’s about all for my ‘October Ramble’.

Best Wishes Mary Davis, Editor

THE PEW CUSHION PROJECT

AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH, WOULDHAM

This project is proceeding well and anyone interested in joining the

needle workers will be very welcome. We are working tapestry cushions

for the pews in memory of loved ones. The finished cushion will carry a

permanent label with the name of the donor and/or to whom it is

dedicated together with the name of the person who has worked the

cushion. Contributors will be contacted when their cushion is ready and

informed at which Service it will be dedicated.

Each cushion measures 52ʺ x 13ʺ and costs £170. Sharing the cost with

others who have expressed an interest is possible so contributions over

£30 are gratefully received. The cushions are worked by volunteers as it is

a non-profit making activity.

SUMMER CREAM TEA AND CONCERT AT

ST MARY’S OLD CHURCH

The Friends of St Mary’s Burham wish to thank all who

came and enjoyed what was a lovely concert set in the

grounds of the church. The weather was very kind to us and

the sun shone all day. We particularly want to thank the band Mosaic and singer

Tonia Moore for giving up their time and playing such a wide variety of music,

with something for everyone. As well as Richard from the Vale Bakery who

made all the scones and also the person who made the homemade jam, thank

you all. We managed to raise over £300 for the church, which we will use to

make various repairs.

We are a very small group and are always looking for new members, if you

would like to join us please pick up a leaflet from the church or contact Rosie

James 01634 672346.

TRAFALGAR CLOSE RIVER WALL UPDATE FROM TONBRIDGE AND MALLING BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Council have received a number of requests by residents for an

update on the river wall at Wouldham near Trafalgar Close and Nelson

Road.

This bit of the river wall is the property of TMBC. It is the only river wall

in Wouldham where there is a problem and it affects about 40 metres of

the wall. The pathway behind the wall has sunk a little as a result. The

Council has been monitoring the condition of this part of the river wall for

many years following the detection of movement in the wall between the

public open space and the River Medway. A scheme to strengthen and

rebuild the wall has been developed and currently specialist consultants

are being commissioned to prepare detailed designs and drawings.

Funding for the works has been allocated within the Council's Capital

Plan, and the project will be considered by Members of the Council at its

Finance, Innovation & Property Advisory Board in January 2016.

If over the next few months there is any significant deterioration of the

wall the Council is well placed to respond positively and look to

accelerate our works accordingly. We will of course ensure all

appropriate action in terms of health and safety to the public would be

taken which may result in the area being immediately fenced off.

For any further information please contact the Council on 01732 844522

or speak to your Borough Councillors Roger Dalton or Dave Davis.

BURHAM C of E

PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPASSION, ACCEPTANCE, RESPONSIBILITY,

FORGIVENESS, TRUST

Autumn is now truly upon us although this does not deter our staff and

children from making the most of our wonderful outdoor spaces within the

School grounds. All of our children (and staff!) are encouraged to keep

wet weather clothing and footwear in school to maximise the chance for

exercise and fresh air almost every day. Work on our new school roof is

well underway now and should be completed by the end of this term.

The start of this month saw our Harvest Festival take place at Burham

Church with a large number of food items being collected and passed on

to the Salvation Army. As ever the generosity of our families was very

much appreciated and will have made a real difference to the lives of those

in need. Our Multicultural Week was also a great success with many of

our families coming in to see and enjoy the results of our children’s hard

work at the end of that week.

Our new children in Panda class (Year R) and in other classes have now

settled well into our school community. Swimming classes have resumed

at Larkfield with every Key Stage 2 child being given the opportunity to

participate during the year. Giraffe Class is already working hard on their

Enterprise activities to raise money for their end of year school trip in

Summer 2016.

Our children are benefitting once again from the wide range of clubs we

have to offer as a school. Gymnastics, Netball, Singing, Football, Knitting

and Cross Country are all on offer and we are pleased to see a

considerable take up of these. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank

you to those clubs which are supported and run voluntarily by our staff,

governors, parents and members of the church – we couldn’t do it without

you and these activities truly enrich our children’s opportunities and

experience!

The end of this term will see our first parent consultations for Years 1 to 6.

We always welcome feedback from our families as we are continually

seeking ways to develop and improve our School. We hope everyone

enjoys a relaxing and restorative Term 1 holiday at the end of this month.

As always, all updates relating to our school can be found on our website www.burham.kent.sch.uk If you would like to get involved with our PTFA please do

get in touch [email protected]

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL

Wouldham Parish Council met on 1st September.

FUN DAY: Wouldham Fun Day on August 16th was a big success, thanks must

go to Daphne Parris who organised it at such short notice along with Martin

Jukes and Anne Marr. They were joined by Jellybeans, The Church, the Youth

Club and Wouldham Project. We would like to thank Lorraine at TMBC for

having the Dog Show in Wouldham, it was very successful. Some of the most

unlikely pooches won prizes!

See our report in the magazine.

WILD FLOWERS: One of our Councillors would like to see more wild

flowers and daffodils growing in the Village, we have identified some areas but

if anyone has any ideas you can email me at the address below. I think we

should thank The Medway Inn and The Watermans for their lovely hanging

baskets which really enhance the Village.

FACEBOOK: Don’t forget we have a new Facebook page called Wouldham

Council Community, we try to put on any pieces of information that is useful to

the village. We also have the 3 noticeboards in the village which get updated

weekly.

ALLOTMENTS: There are still allotments available, we know they are a bit

muddy at the moment, we are trying to get some type 1 to put down on the

pathways. Call Ashley 01634 685959.

DOG POO: Sorry to keep bringing this up, we have acquired some stencils now

and they will be going down in the Village to remind people to use the bins

provided.

ROAD WORKS: The work in the High Street to repair the drains was

successfully completed but the water leaks outside the Village Hall have left a

bit of a mess, we have reported this to Kent Highways to see if it can be tidied

up a bit.

FOOTBALL: In partnership with Burham and Wouldham Football Teams we

are trying to get some changing rooms and showers put on the Rec, early days

but watch this space.

TEEN SHELTER: It has come to our notice that children are climbing on the

shelter in the Rec, please could we ask parents to prevent this, it is dangerous

and once it is damaged beyond repair will have to be removed.

NEXT COUNCIL MEETING WILL BE HELD ON 6TH October 2015 at

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Not much news to report this month as due to deadlines for the magazine,

the September meeting is still a few weeks away.

As a reminder, all paper and cardboard can be placed in the recycling

container. Whilst the container states “cardboard”, paper can be placed

inside as well.

Over the last few months, crime figures have not appeared within the

parish magazine as our local PSCO had some personal problems and was

not able to submit the figures. Hopefully, this has now been resolved and

crimes figures will again appear shortly.

The 1st presentation of the Archaeology of Peters Village (arranged by

Trenport) took place mid-September and as previously reported was fully

booked before the posters were pinned up. The presentation proved to be

very interesting to all those that attended. A 2nd presentation has been

arranged for 5 October 2015, but this is also now fully booked

Whilst last month it was reported that the “Spur road sweeping curve”

from the old and new Court Roads would be changed to a “give way” and

the hedge removed to improve sight lines but replanted further back,

work is still to take place. BAM Nuttall has advised that the work to the

hedge will take place in November and the markings will be changed in

due course but cannot give any confirmed dates.

Work to Peters Village development is progressing well with the bridge

over the river Medway taking shape. Trenport are close to awarding the

contract to build the 1st phase of dwellings. Further details on the

development can be found at www.trenport.co.uk . On this website is a

link to register an interest in the new houses due to be built.

With the darker night’s drawing in, let me know if there are any street

lights which are inoperative or not working properly. I can then report to

Kent Highway Services for them to address.

For those of you not aware, the 158 hospital bus ceased to operate at the

end of August. Although the contract did go out for re-tender, a decision

was made by KCC not to reinstate the route due to cost effectiveness and

lack of usage. If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss, just give

me a call on my new number 01634 685936, e-mail me on

[email protected] or come along to the monthly meetings, normally held

the last Monday of the month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 26

October 2015, 7.30 pm The Parish Building, ROCHESTER ROAD, BURHAM.

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School The new school year has got off to a flying start and we are excited by

everybody’s enthusiasm and thirst for learning. Our new children have

settled in well and we look forward to getting to know everyone even

better and see you grow and progress throughout the year.

The school has also grown tremendously, especially over the past few

years, and we now have seven classes with three completely full of

children and most of the others very close to capacity. Space is a real

premium!

It is for this reason, and with expected population growth in the area as

well as a Victorian building providing little opportunity for expansion that

we have proposed a relocation to the other end of the village.

We believe this is an exciting opportunity to really move the quality of

provision forward and to enable all of our children (present and future) to

be taught in purpose built accommodation that will also allow us to

increase the opportunities and experiences currently on offer.

There is a consultation that is now open and we would encourage you to

respond to this. There is an open invitation for you to attend an

information event on Wednesday 14th October, the timings should be on

our website. If you would like to know more about this proposal then

please come along and share your thoughts and concerns. We hope to have

provisional plans so that you can get an idea of what the re-located school

may look like.

It is important to remember that this will still be our school, just bigger,

better and in a different location! We will work hard at maintaining our

‘family’ ethos and continue the work we already do but also extending

opportunities resulting from additional space and resources.

We have been established for 150 years and during that time there have

been many trips to All Saints Church to mark Walter Burke and Trafalgar

Day. This year is no exception and we will be doing our usual flower

laying and service on Wednesday 21st October. A significant change for

this year only is that the service will take place in the afternoon rather than

the morning. The flower laying element is planned for 1:15 and we extend

a warm invitation to all members of the community.

We also have our first ‘Show n Share’ event on the same day (21st

October) where your children can happily show you the work they have

produced this term. This takes place in all classes from 3.15 until 4pm.

A reminder that the term finishes on Friday 23rd October with everyone

returning for Term 2 on Monday 2nd November.

WOULDHAM FUN DAY The Parish Council asked me to organise the day with the idea of uniting the village.

Martin Jukes and Anne Marr joined me in this venture. We invited the various village

groups and organisations to have a free stall to raise funds for themselves and were joined

by Jellybeans, the Youth Club, the Church and the Wouldham Project. Outsider stalls

were to give a donation of say 10%. I think everyone will agree the Fun Day was a

success, it worked well sharing the day with the Dog Show and the comments received

since have been very positive and people are looking forward to next year’s event. While

this was not a money making exercise it was discussed that any money raised should be

retained by the Parish Council and go towards holding an annual event. I will hand to the

clerk the accounts prepared Anne Marr for their records and I understand Nicky has been

asked to collect the money from Anne.

The Parish Council purchased coconut shies and hired portaloos. Martin and his

neighbour Mike Howes made “village stocks” and “splat the rat” games, which they have

donated to the parish, and Keith Reddy donated a marquee. This equipment has been

stored in the village hall for future use. Lee Pleau supplied cones and barriers which have

been stored in the hut in the recreation ground. James Gore supplied straw bales, BAM

loaned a water bowser, which was filled by hosepipe by Glyn and Pam Goodyer. The

school loaned various items for the Knock Out, and were given a £50 donation to the

school funds. Mandi and Alan from the Watermans kindly loaned their bouncy castle and

paid the insurance premium for the day. Mark and Sandra Redgrave erected the scaffold

surround for the coconut shy (Mark erected under Sandra’s supervision), and friends and

neighbours baked for the cake stall.

Leading up to the day John Head (under instruction I guess from Jenny), prepared the rec,

collected the bales and the bowser. On the day we were helped out by Nicky and her

husband, Jenny, Tim and Gill and Karen made signs for stalls and a letter drop under

instruction from Anne, Margie Watkins and sister Hayley ran the cake stall and I would

like to say a big thank you to everyone for their help. Tracey Crouch, Minister for Sport

visited too and performed first aid on a guy helping to run the basketball challenge stall –

Tracey is sports first-aid trained apparently.

This really was a village event and I would like to propose that this does become an

annual event and in future all funds raised are reinvested each year. In this way the annual

event can become self-funding and there would be no need of financial help from the

Parish Council. Nicky Grimes, Clerk

ARRIVA BUS SERVICE 155

The recent highway works in Wouldham High Street have levelled the surface and this

has made it better for buses and other traffic.

The discussions about access for bus services in Wouldham High Street have been very

positive and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the councils and

residents to implement a scheme that will work for everyone.

Over the summer when Operation Stack has been in place, the 155 along with many

other bus services in the Maidstone area has been affected as traffic looks for

alternative routes to the M20 causing congestion at times and in places well outside the

norm. This has been very challenging for us as our operations teams juggle buses and

drivers to try and cover for seriously delayed services. We are sorry if you’ve been

affected by this. Malcolm Spalding , Arriva

October in Your Garden

In Autumn, don’t go to the jewellers to find gold, go to the parks.’ Now that autumn has well & truly set in, the temperatures

have dropped and the days are shorter, and this means that

the leaves of trees and shrubs are changing their colours be-

fore they shed for the winter. The colours of autumn are a sight to behold,

so make the most of the fine days this month to visit a park or arboretum

and make the most of what autumn has to offer.

If you are lucky enough to have trees in your garden then you will

experience first hand the seasons changing, but it will also mean you will

be busy raking up the leaves as they fall. Fallen leaves make excellent

leaf mould which, once well rotted, can be used as soil improver, just bag

up the fallen leaves, dampen them and pierce some holes in the bag.

Leave the bag somewhere out of the way and in a year or two the leaf

mould will have broken down and can be used in your borders either on

top as a mulch or dig it in to improve the condition of the soil.

By now lawn growth has slowed down, so it’s time to clean up the mower

and store away ready for next year. At the same time check for any

damage or repairs that need doing to make sure it’s ready for spring, and

check any other garden tools before storing them away for winter. It’s

also the last opportunity to plant spring bulbs, trim hedges and split

perennials plants, so make sure these jobs are done before the clocks

change at the end of the month. Final clearing of dead or dying materials

can also be done to ensure the garden is tidy over winter, and any tender

plants in pots or in the garden should now be placed into a sheltered

position or greenhouse.

The vegetable garden will also be winding down now, most of the tree

fruit should have been picked and it’s time to start clearing the remains of

the plot to the compost bin.

Other things to be doing this month:

Review your garden requirements for next year – are there gaps to

filling, or does it need more seasonal interest..??

Lift dahlias, begonias and gladioli for storing over the winter

Prune climbing and rambling roses

Plant autumn onion and garlic sets

Aerate the lawn by spiking with a fork & brushing sand into the holes. We have some Wouldham allotment plots available.

DOGS TRUST AND TONBRIDGE & MALLING BOROUGH

COUNCIL CALL ON LOCAL COMMUNITIES

TO CLEAN UP THEIR DOGS’ DOO

Although the majority of dog owners in Tonbridge and Malling are

responsible and pick up after their pooch, dog waste remains a prominent

and unpleasant issue in the borough.

Some regular poop scoopers admit that there have been occasions when

they’ve failed to scoop the poop of their own dog, despite knowing the

implications of dog fouling in their local community. In Tonbridge and

Malling, the Council supplies more than 1,500 bins throughout the

borough which owners can use to dispose of their dog's waste.

Dog poo doesn’t only have to be disposed of in special dog waste bins so

if dog owners are in an area where there is no dog waste bin then any

public bin can be used to dispose of dog poo.

To launch its third annual anti-fouling

campaign, The Big Scoop 2015, Dogs Trust

and Keep Britain Tidy called on councils,

communities and local people to unite as

ambassadors for the campaign, becoming

‘Scooper Heroes’ and spreading the message

to ‘bag it and bin it’.

Frances Abson, Head of Campaigns at Dogs

Trust says: “Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, is thrilled

to be working with Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council on our

campaign The Big Scoop, which is all about reminding people to pick up

after their dogs, and finding ‘Scooper Heroes’ in the local area who can

help us tackle this messy issue. With lots of materials available and fun

activities to be involved in, we want to make sure everyone knows that

they can keep their streets clean simply by bagging and binning!

To get involved in The Big Scoop, or to find out about hosting an

awareness event in your area, please visit www.thebigscoop.org.uk”

THE BUTTERFLY BUSH

The Butterfly Bush, Buddleia is one of the best

plants to grow for butterflies, moths and other pollinators but it needs to

be managed to prevent it spreading across sensitive natural habitats.

The good… Buddleia is an attractive plant with a lovely scent and

beautiful purple, pink, yellow or white flowers. In July and August garden

butterflies such as the Peacock, Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell and

Comma often visit Buddleia flowers in large groups – it is clearly a

favoured nectar source. 28 species of butterflies have been recorded,

including Silver-washed Fritillary, Dark Green Fritillary and Chalk Hill

Blue. Moths such as the Humming-bird Hawk-moth can be found

nectaring on Buddleia in the daytime. But it is also well worth visiting

your Buddleia after dark to see night-flying species.

The bad… Although Buddleia is a valuable resource for pollinators, care

should be taken to stop it from self-seedling and spreading beyond the

garden, where it can out-compete native plants nearby.

What you can do… To avoid self-seeding, Buddleia should be

deadheaded immediately after flowering, when all of the many nectar-

containing florets on the each flowerhead have died. A Royal

Horticultural Society trial from 2010-12 showed that deadheading not

only improved the appearance of the plant but also extended the period of

flowering and helped to prevent seedlings spreading. All Buddleia

flowering after June produce leaves on the new shoots, so need to be

pruned back hard to stimulate lots of new growth and flowers.

To make the most of your Buddleia, cut it back by half in autumn, after

flowering has finished, to prevent strong winds from destroying the plant.

In mid to late spring (March to April) cut it back

further, to a third of its original size. This delays

flowering, ensuring it blooms in late summer, just

in time for the emergence of the most colourful

garden butterflies.

One other thing you can do is look out for the

newer varieties, which have been bred to produce

fewer seeds, such as the popular Buddleia Miss

Ruby, or to be sterile such as the dwarf variety

Buddleia Lo and Behold ‘Blue Chip’.
