This is exactly what we can do with Virtual Reality (VR). We are excited to announce that Burcham Hills has received a one-year donation of a VR set from MyndVR. MyndVR provides a vast selection of immersive content catered specifically for older adult audiences. This will be utilized throughout our community to benefit our residents and provide a unique element to our programing. Many studies have been conducted on VR and the benefits specifically to elders. VR may lead to increased memory, cognitive and physical function, decrease anxiety and feelings of loneli- ness and increase socialization. The VR experience allows the user to enjoy experiences and be transported to places where their bodies can no longer physically go. Although you will still be sitting at home, the sights and sounds generated feel so real that your mood can respond favorably. VR also encourages pushing past limits and provide a distraction from pain. It can also provide a familiar experience from an individual s past, stimulating memory and encourage reminiscing. The possibilities of Virtual Reality and the engaging nature of this technology can help lead healthier, happier lives to its users. As a reminder, we will be postponing all Virtual Visits on Monday, May 25. Regularly scheduled Virtual Visits will resume on Tuesday, May 26. Memorial Day History General Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans, issued General Order No. 11 on May 5, 1868, which set aside May 30, 1868 “for the purpose of strewing flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in de-fense of their country during the late rebellion.” (Civil War)

Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Lansing was originally named Logan in honor of General Lo-gan. When it was renamed to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, American Legion’s Post 12 raised funds to put a monument up just inside the entrance of Mount Hope Cemetery to honor Gen-eral Logan.

Memorial Day was originally called “Decoration Day.” In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act shifted Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May.
