Editor’s Column It seems like the curry lunch in August turned out very well judging from the many thanks, e‐mails and phone calls we received a erwards. The e‐mailed le er bellow is from Jo Dunne. Thank you Jo and all the others for their kind words and thanks. Jo writes: Just got home from the RSL Club in Belmont a er a lovely curry lunch provided by Maureen van Aarde with a ‘li le’ help from Pete with the donkey work. Choice of beef or chicken curry, with rice, yoghurt, salads, pappadums followed by a large variety of lovely cakes (both large and small) and biscuits and chocolate. I heard several nice comments about how lovely the meal was but the best proof was that we sold all the extra servings. This idea of cooking extra and then selling it a erwards in meal size por ons is a great idea and is of huge benefit to our M'dalas as it can be frozen for future meals and is great value. About 30 people a ended the lunch including Jacky Capper’s sister Nicky and husband John visi ng from Ballarat in Victoria. Midge Carter showed a DVD of the centenary celebra on of Rhodesia (1890 – 1990) in which Ian Smith gave an entertaining speech without, as usual, reading from any notes. Thank you Midge. And a big THANK YOU to Maureen and Pete Van Aarde for all their hard work. They worked relessly all day to ensure the lunch was such a success.

We wish you all the success you deserve for the long and concerted effort you put into realising your aspira on and turning it into reality, your book, well done. While doing some research a short me back, I came across this rather interes ng li le web site. What a racted my a en on most though was a pain ng of a Lion, pictured here. I have seen a number of pain ngs in Australia of African wildlife but the majority, although boas ng a well developed level of ar s c technique, lacked true propor on which

compromised their realism. This ar st however, clearly knows what an African Lion looks like. This is a medium sized original oil pain ng on canvas 24 x 36 inches in size, signed Grant Hilton‐Barber. The price on the web site is US$350! If correct, this is a giveaway for a work of this caliber. If you have Internet it is well worth a visit, there are numerous awesome works. M'dala’s August & September—2011 Chairman's report I decided to change the content of the report on our meetings to a less formal one, with

more emphasis on the speaker’s story. I would like you to tell me what you think of this new format (in a kindly manner!). Our meetings continue to be quite well attended with an average attendance of about 35

people, and we are a friendly, happy mob. The morning tea is always enticing and we are grateful to our members who provide this month after month. We always have some feedback about the current situation in Zimbabwe, and it is mostly

heartbreaking. Midge reads excerpts from Cathy Buckle’s emails. Cathy is the author of several books, including “African Tears” and she distributes a newsletter via email which gives an update of life in Zimbabwe as she sees it. Her website is www.cathybuckle.com We were very pleased to welcome Margaret Craft back after her ordeal following her fall. We are sad to tell you that Charlotte Shulman is very unwell. We took a pot plant to Abe

from M’dalas, to show the family that we are thinking of them. Trish thought that this would be an on‐going message rather than flowers which die so soon. In August Midge showed us a copy of a RAWA membership list from 1987. (Don’t be

surprised that he still has it. He still has his royal blue crimplene suit from the 70s and some apricot knee‐high socks that feature in many of his photos of that period! Trish) Trish (tongue in cheek) suggested that other ladies might wish to ask their library to

reserve the book that she had been notified was awaiting her: “Getting pregnant faster: boost your fertility in just 3 months”. Somewhere in the Shire of Swan is a young woman wondering why there is a copy of the magazine “Wartime” ready for her to collect. We all look forward to Mike Bray’s poems at each meeting. He really captures the spirit of

the experience he is recalling, in a very entertaining way. We recommend his 2 books of his poems to you all and remind you that you will be helping the pensioner fund as well as having a good chuckle. Social events. Those of us who went to the curry lunch in August had a great time. Thanks to Maureen

van Aarde and her helpers for an excellent catering effort. What a pity that more of you didn’t come along! On 1st September we (Trish & Midge) welcomed members to our home for a “Treasures”

morning, involving musical and humorous film clips, morning tea and chatter. We certainly enjoyed the morning and hope they did too. We will have more in the future. Short talks At the August meeting Midge told us about his much‐loved friend, Swatter. You can read

this in the Bundu Times. September’s talk was by Tom O’Connor, who read a letter by Martha Jakins, who with her

husband John Todd Jakins and several children, emigrated to Rhodesia from Grahamstown in 1900, 111 years ago. It is a detailed account of a lengthy journey which took many weeks, when the Boer War was at its peak. The first part of the journey was by train as far as Bulawayo, but from then to their

destination, Salisbury, they continued by ox‐wagon. Her harrowing description of passing rows and rows of soldiers’ graves along the rail line as

they passed battlefields near Kimberley and on to Mafeking, smashed up towns and villages also, fording crocodile infested creeks and getting bogged in swampy vleis are just a few of her experiences and adventures along the way. This letter is probably too long for the Bundu Times but we may be able to send it out by

email in due course. Thank you Tom for a very interesting talk. We encourage members to follow Tom’s example in sharing something with us.

Member's stories Spike the Warthog! ‐ Contributed by M'dala's Chairman Midge Carter I received this deligh ul picture of a wild Warthog from a friend in Johannesburg. I just had

to share this with you. For those who are not familiar with this beast, they are a large type of pig with 2 large inverted tusks that grow up from their lower jaw. They can be very dangerous. My friend writes:‐ I had an email from a friend in Zimbabwe yesterday and she sent me this picture and story

that I thought was deligh ul. They had been away at a game park and on the first evening while si ng in front of the fire in the bar, in walked a fully grown wart hog. He walked over to the bar and without a word the bar man handed him a pillow. He took the pillow, put it next to the fire and promptly lay down with his head on the pillow and went to sleep where, apparently, he spends the cold nights. Then in the morning, he's off into the bush again! My friend says that if the barman isn't there he will grab a pillow off one of the couches! Here he is! Spike the Wart hog!

Zimbabwe Pensioner Support Fund ‐August 2011 Trip This trip was considerably delayed because of con nued problems with the relevant

departments in Zimbabwe who issue us with import permits that enable us to import various goods for the pensioners. In fact Hannes made two trips to Harare, the second one las ng more than a week, before we had the paperwork needed to start the process on this side. However, we will not be overcome and we know that our God will always be with us as we

try to sustain a lifeline to the pensioners in Zimbabwe. We are a er all answering the call He gave “to reach out and feed his sheep as is wri en in the Bible in John 21: 15 ‐17. I feel that before I start the details of the trip report as such, I once again need to stress the

chronic need of the pensioners there. In 2008 the Zimbabwe currency was discon nued as a result of the removing of 12 digits off the Z$ monetary unit and as a result, all pensions were obliterated. Since then the only form of sustenance many of the pensioners have is, what we with your help are able to provide. It is really tragic to arrive at our des na ons two weeks late to find folk who have run out of food, and to “run” as well as a pensioner can run, ran up to me, hugged me in tears to say, “we ran out of food 2,3 and 4 days ago, thank you for caring about us”. Yes folks, I don’t make this up. These dear people are like you and I, sadly too proud to let their neighbours know their plight because many are in the same boat. On this trip Hannes and I travelled solo in our trucks and we each had a very adventurous

trip. I set off to Malelane on the 25th to have my truck loaded and once that was done drove back to my home in Duiwelskloof to wait for Hannes who was having his truck loaded and would leave the following day.

Friday 26th. We arrived in Musina in the a ernoon and collected all the border documents and re red

to our hosts, Henry and Elizabeth Cameron’s home to spend the night.

Saturday 27th. We had an excellent crossing, arriving at the border at 06.45 and cleared both sides by

09.30. However, while nego a ng the truck parking area on the Zimbabwe side, which to say the least is in a pathe c state and in dire need of repair, the secondary fuel tank on the UD 80 was dislodged and we spent the best part of an hour reloca ng and securing it again. En route to Bulawayo we discovered that the centre bolt on the UD90’s tag axle had broken and the axle was running out of kilter. A er a temporary repair job we pressed on to Bulawayo. As our progress was now slower, Hannes went ahead and did the hamper drop at Kings Haven home in Esigodini while I limped into Bulawayo where I off loaded the goods for SOAP and then went to an old family friend for help. Gert Naude helped with a length of chain, some bolts and strong wire with which I would do a further repair job. We spent the night at Corona on Co ages in a co age allocated to us and had a good night’s rest. Here I want to take the opportunity to thank the commi ee of “Corona on Co ages” for

giving us one of their co ages where we can overnight when needed, these things are all great blessings.

Sunday 28th. Up early to repair the truck’s axle and secure it as best I could and le at midday for Gweru

where I did the drops for Huisvergesig and Boggies, leaving the goods for MUUS lodge and Zvishavane at Boggies. I then went on to Lynbrook home in Kwe kwe where I dropped the goods for them and also for Herbert Lee in Redcliff. Ken Connelly and his helpers were on hand and we soon had it all done. I spent the night there with Ken and Beda, our hosts in Kwe kwe who also assist us with fuel. I was really red but soon felt refreshed with their hospitable spirit and care, we appreciate all you do, bless you.

Monday 29th. Up early to a good breakfast and on the road by 08.30. I arrived at Westview co ages in


Kadoma at 0945, dropped the hampers and went on to Sunningdale trust in Chinhoyi and on to Harare where I planned to drop the goods at Mike and Marion Fu er. However, when I wanted to point out my great repair job to our friend Jim Forrester, we found that the chain had snapped somewhere between Chinhoyi and Harare the axle was again out of alignment. Jim took control and insisted that the truck stand overnight at their premises, and proper repairs will be done the next day. I spent the night with friends, Joggie and Elsa Prinsloo.

Tuesday 30th. Jim and his crew led by Colin, his workshop foreman, did a splendid job of rebuilding the

axle components and making sure all was in order before he allowed me to travel further. The repair job was completed by13.00 and I le to do the deliveries to the Fu er family. By 15.00 I was on my way to Resthaven in Rusape, arriving there at 17.15 dropping the hampers and enjoying a well‐brewed cuppa. We always get such a warm welcome here. However, I s ll needed to get to Mutare before I could call it a day so I headed off and arrived there at 19.00, parked the “silver horse” and went to relax with our host family, Des and Sally Becker. Again being very red they soon made me feel relaxed and had a good night’s sleep, thank you so much.

Wednesday 31st. With the help of Des’s crew we did all the homes in the morning, picked up all the emp es

in the a ernoon and then to rest for an early departure the following day.

Thursday 1st September. I was up early and managed to leave for Masvingo by 05.00. En route I dropped the

hampers for Chivhu with Piet de Klerk and arrived in Masvingo at Lulu McKenzie’s workplace to drop the goods for all the homes in Masvingo. I went to see ZIMRA, the people who process our rebate le er and was able to get the le er for Hannes to take a load of maize meal through the following week. I did the Mucheke drop and then le for the border at 12.15 arriving at the border at 16.15. I had an absolutely fantas c crossing emerging on the SA side by 1700. Then the “silver horse” died on me, barely 1 kilometre past the border. A er a long struggle with friends Joe Joubert & Hennie Ferreira and I, I was rescued by Henry Cameron who saw us bush mechanics going nowhere slowly. He posted a watchman for the night and took me home for much needed rest.

Friday 2nd. Early morning he had a mechanic sourced to sort the problem and had me back on the

road in no me. I was able to run through to Bushbuck ridge where Hannes and I exchanged trucks and I was able to get home from a VERY exhaus ng trip at 21.30. Both Hannes and myself once again realized doing these trips solo is not a good idea

especially if a trip turns out like this one did. We trust and pray this will not happen again and that we will always have someone to travel with. To cancel a trip because of these hick‐ups is not an op on as these precious folk rely on us. One person cannot work, do repairs, keep a lookout and manage busybody onlookers at

the same me. This opera on is largely based on volunteers and to some may appear a thankless task. We are thankful to all who come with us and we may not always appear to be grateful but we are. In due course we will post our es mated me and date for the next trip so if you can, please contact us to make arrangements if you would like to travel with. I have to go for a knee replacement opera on very soon so the rest of the crew will need helpers and or co‐drivers. One of the prizes donated toward customary fundraising at all our social events was a lap quilt made by Maureen. In the draw for these prises the quilt was won by a fellow who

said it would be of more use to someone else and very kindly donated his winning back for re‐draw. Now, whatever you may believe in, be it fate or anything else supernatural, from me to me events pan out in a way that could well be construed as being engineered

that way. I say this because in the re‐draw the quilt was won by non other than our very good friend and talented chef Rochelle! Rochelle told us earlier that she really fancied the quilt and wished she would be lucky enough to win it. Well her wish came true, and it could not have gone to a more deserving person. Perhaps there lies in here a supple message to us all, a good deed done, is never unseen even if only by mere mortals it can only work for you and for your benefit. Ok, that concludes the free philosophy lesson in this issue of the BT by yours truly. On a more serious note, I would just like to say thank you to all the folks that a ended in support of our truly worthy cause, that of not forge ng the less fortunate old folks of Zim‐babwe who's existence is en rely dependent on the hear elt generosity of people like you. Also a very special thank you to Rochelle, Crystal and Maureen who all worked really hard the whole weekend, well done ladies you did a great job. We also owe thanks to the many ladies who kindly donated cakes and other goodies for desert a erwards. Last but not least, thanks to those who where able to stay a li le longer and help with the cleaning up. There were no charges per say for the use of the RSL facility but I am happy to say we were able to make an $80 dona on to the RSL from a gold coin dona on by the patrons of the day.

I know Christmas is s ll 4 months away. But doing what we do we need to start fund raising now, so we can have everything, bought, packed and labelled by the end of November so that our Golden Oldies can get their Christmas and normal boxes before Christmas arrives. I have a ached some photos of past Christmas smiles that we have brought to the Pensioners in Zimbabwe.

One pensioner at Boggies Trust in Gweru described what we are doing as “ CHRISTIANITY IN ACTION “. On the Christmas Trip when we also hand out a small present to each of our pensioners, one pensioner had this to say. “ I have family all over the world but the only Christmas present I had to open on Christmas day was The one from the ZPSF “.

We at the ZPSF would like to be able to make the upcoming Christmas of 2011 extra special for our pensioners. As a Fund we rely solely on dona ons to do what we do. Curry Lunch ‐ held in August at the Belmont RSL The curry lunch was a great success as far as the food, venue and company was concerned, turnout however could have been better. The two young ladies below, sisters Rochelle and Crystal D’Silva are very good friends of Maureen and I, and kindly offered their whole weekend to prepare the special curry dishes

for us. Special, because the recipe is an old Bangladeshi family favourite perfected over many generations, and contains many different spices which have to be prepared and cooked in a unique way. Rochelle and sister Crystal are exceptional chefs mentored by their father Adolph who is a real master. Midge Carter set up a small theatre complete with video projector and sound system, so we had music during lunch and afterwards Midge showed a number of videos about Rhodesia from 1890 to 1980.
