Learning Areas Handbook on the College Website 2021 Student Information Handbook 2021 Subject Selection information on SIMON
• Acceleration means completing a Year 11 (Unit 1-2) subject while in Year 10 or a Year 12 (Unit 3-4) subject while in Year 11.
• The College reserves the right to select which students shall be allowed to accelerate.
POLICY ON ACCELERATION INTO A VCE SUBJECT
• Acceleration is best suited to students who are already excelling in a related subject area. However, the accelerated subject is generally not the student’s best subject.
• Acceleration is an additional option for highly able students who wish to apply to accelerate into a VCE Unit 1 & 2 subject in Year 10, excluding English, Mathematics*, Chemistry*, Physics* and Languages*.
• Selection for an accelerated subject is generally based on, but not limited to, Semester One results. In most cases Semester Two results are considered to confirm whether acceleration is suitable for the student.
POLICY ON ACCELERATION INTO A VCE SUBJECT
• Note: At Parade Year 10 students applying to study a VCE (Unit 3-4) subject at Year 11 may not accelerate into a Unit 3-4 subject unless they have studied the appropriate Unit 1-2 course beforehand.
• Students who are offered a place in an accelerated subject do so with the full understanding that they shall not allow their performance in their remaining subjects be negatively affected by the additional demands of the accelerated subject.
POLICY ON ACCELERATION INTO A VCE SUBJECT
• Students may undertake one accelerated subject sequence.
• Current Altior students may apply for up to two accelerated subjects.
• VCE subjects have one more lesson per cycle than Year 10 subjects. Accelerating students will miss one Year 10 lesson per cycle to attend all of the VCE subject lessons.
POLICY ON ACCELERATION INTO A VCE SUBJECT
Year 9 students* applying to study a VCE (Unit 1-2) subject at Year 10 must achieve the following pre-requisites:
• Letter grades of A or higher in ALL assessment tasks of the specific subject or the most relevant Year 9 subject from the same Learning Area;
AND • Letter grade average of B or higher in at least four out of five core subjects (English, Religious Education,
History, Mathematics and Science) in Year 9 in Semester One). AND
• Learning Behaviours (Behaves respectfully; seeks assistance and feedback; is organised and punctual; completes set work) grades of Often or Consistently in at least four Semester One subjects.
Pre-requisites for Acceleration(*excluding Altior students)
• Year 9 Altior students applying to study a VCE (Unit 1-2) subject at Year 10 must achieve the following pre-requisites:
• Letter grades of B or higher in ALL assessment tasks of the specific subject or the most relevant Year 9 subject from the same Learning Area;
AND • Letter grade average of B or higher in all other subjects.
AND• Learning Behaviours (Behaves respectfully; seeks assistance and feedback; is organised and
punctual; completes set work) grades of Often or Consistently in at least four Semester One subjects.
Pre-requisites for Acceleration: Altior Students
• The recommendation of the Learning Area Leader of the subject.
• Timely submission of the correct Application form with the Web Preferences receipt form.
• Continuation in an accelerated subject next year is not automatic. Similar pre-requisites exist.
Pre-requisites for Acceleration
Accelerating in Science
Students accelerating into Biology Units 1&2 or Psychology Units 1&2 in year 10: This acceleration counts as your minimum two units of Science.
However, if you wish to pursue another Science in Year 11, you must complete the appropriate pre-requisite (e.g. choose Chemistry Matters in Year 10 if you wish to enrol in VCE Chemistry etc).
Acceleration in Chemistry and Physics is not encouraged.
VCE Acceleration Form
Separate Pink Acceleration form: Forms are available on the subject selection page under “Resources and
FAQs’.
To be considered for acceleration students need the complete the relevant form and email it to ‘[email protected]’ by Wednesday 5th
August. Where it is clear that a student may not meet the criteria for acceleration,
the Learning Area Leader may indicate that the student should reconsider acceleration and will not support the application.
Nominate on form the Year 10 subjects to be replaced if successful.
VCE subject is for whole year, so replaces two Year 10 Units Accelerating will generate a clash in one class for one period a cycle; student
attends the Year 11 class and catches up on any work for the Year 10 class
Outcome
The decision on whether a student meets the criteria for acceleration is determined by a Panel. No one person decides on the outcome of each application.
During term three you will be notified in writing via email in relation to one of three possiblr outcomes.1) Recommended: Student meets all of the selection criteria.2) Pending: Student may meet all or some of the criteria. And
Semester Two Grades are not yet available to support that student meets criteria. AND/OR The Panel requires Semester Two results before making a final decision regarding the students suitability for
acceleration. AND/OR The most relevant Year 9 Subject has not yet completed topics related to the accelerated subject (e.g.
Application into Unit 1&2 Biology - Year 9 Science has not yet assessed the related topic of Biology). AND/OR
Learning Behaviours on the Semester One report show concern 3) Not Recommended: Student does not meet all of the selection criteria.
