Big Idea: Discovery Non-Fiction

Enduring Understandings Essential Questions Writers use resources that help provide information. Asking questions helps a reader and writer learn about new things. I must share information so that my audience can understand me. Readers find clues in text to figure out unknown words.

How do writers find information to write about? What does a listener do? How can I help my audience understand me? How do Readers use text to understand meaning of words?

Bundle Performance Task(s) Students publish a non-fiction piece independently or in small groups based on research. Research sources may include classroom books, guided reading books, or library resources. Students will share their non-fiction piece with the rest of their peers. The piece will include the title, author, illustrator, and table of contents. The text will incorporate sequential order so the reader can draw conclusions or confirm predictions about what will happen next in the text. The students will ask questions to guide topic selection, use a variety of sources of information, and organize and classify the information. High-frequency words will be spelled correctly. Other words should be recognizable to the reader. Students will correctly use common and proper nouns. As an extension, students may research their non-fiction topic on the iPads or on the computer. Knowledge of consonant and vowel digraphs will be evident.
