Mounted partly on the combined bridge and partly on the pillar plate, the automatic mechanism transmits the winding movement from the oscillating weight to the barrel arbor by means of two reversing gear units, a connecting wheel for auxiliary reverser, a reduction gear, a driving gear for crown wheel, the crown wheel and the ratchet wheel. Each reversing gear unit consists of a reversing gear and a reversing gear pinion, the latter being held in position by a spring. Whichever way the weight turns, one reversing gear meshes with the automatic train while the other slips. In either case, a fairly continuous self-winding action will follow. Winding can also be done by hand, using the stem and crown.   • Characteristics11 AOAC1. In this movement, as in the 11 ANAC

    series, the hairspring does notmove freely between the boot andpin of the regulator, but leansagainst the pin. It must continueto do so, even when it is atmaximum open position.

    2. The oscillating weight axle is partof the combined bridge. In the rarecase that it might be necessary toreplace it, a new combined bridgeis required.

    3. The minute wheel spring (129)and clutch lever spring (26) areriveted to the pillar plate in orderto prevent their loss. They aretherefore part of the pillar plate andnot available separately.

    4. The beryllium copper bushing forthe top pivot of the sweep secondwheel is fitted inside the bottompart of the oscillating weight axle.Bulova recommends oiling thisbushing from under the bridge,before fitting the latter.

    5. In this movement there are twoidentical setting wheels (29). Thesetting wheel which meshes withthe clutch wheel (17) is fitted withthe bevelled side up.

    Disassembling thewatchUncasing

    The movement is held in place eitherby two casing clamps (191), or by amovement ring.

    Removing the dial and thecalendar mechanism

    After removing the hands and releasingthe two lateral dial screws (47), thedial may be removed. The day starwith dial disk (591) can be lifted upand the day and date mechanismsremoved.A dial rest (148) is necessary oncaliber 11 AOACB when fitted with aflat dial, and in other models as theneed arises.

    Checking the automaticgear train

    By moving the oscillating weight (344)in both directions, the transmissionof power from the oscillating weight(344) to the ratchet wheel (13) can bechecked.

    Removing the oscillatingweight

    The oscillating weight is held in placeby a gib (343). To remove the weight.unscrew the gib screw (366) andremove the gib.

    Releasing the mainspring

    With the oscillating weight (344)removed, the mainspring can bereleased as follows:

    1. Disengage the click (32), holdingit in disengaged position by meansof a pin or a screw inserted in thehole provided for that purpose inthe barrel bridge.

    2. Press with a pointed tool on onearm of the Breguet spring (326)through the hole made in the upperbridge for automatic device (341)and at the same time

    3. turn the winding crown 1/4 turnforward, then let it turn slowlybackwards until movement iscompletely run down.

    Cleaning the escapement

    As shown in figure 1, the balance andpallet fork are readily removed withoutdisassembling any other parts of themovement.

    The mainspring barrel

    Figure 2 shows how easily the main-spring barrel (1S) is removed withoutdisassembling the self-windingmechanism.Slipping of the brake spring shouldtake place only after 6 completerevolutions of the barrel arbor. Thiscorresponds to a power reserve of over40 hours.An unbreakable and lifetime lubricatedmainspring is used. Therefore, periodiccleaning of the barrel and mainspringis unnecessary.

    Do not dismantle the barrelassembly. In case of difficulty withthe duration of run and if the basicmovement seems to perform normally,check the function of the automaticmechanism. If it is completely free,wi nd it fully by hand and let thepiece run down. If total running timeis less than 35 hours, replace thecomplete barrel assembly (1S).

    Reassembling andoiling the watch

    9. Install, lubricate and adjust asnecessary pallet and balanceassemblies with bridges.

    10. Check that the hairspring pressesagainst the pin (Characteristics11 AOAC, point 1).

    11. Fit the oscillating weight (344)and oil its axle and gib (343).

    large driving wheel (4F) as shownin figure 5. When setting thehands, the cannon pinion slips onthe axle of the wheel, that is whyit is necessary to make sure thatthe friction (torque) between thecannon pinion and the axle is correct.

    2. Install the Breguet spring (326)if removed, the gear train and thecombined bridge (226).NOTE: We recommend oiling thetop pivot of the sweep secondwheel (6K) on the bushing fittedunder the oscillating weight axlebefore fitting the bridge.

    3. Install the mainspring barrel andits bridge.

    4. Lubricate gear train. If the topbushing for sweep second wheelwas not oiled before fitting thebridge, lubricate through theoscillating weight axle with anappropriate oiler.

    5. Lubricate lower bearings of theautomatic train.

    6. Lubricate stud of connecting wheelfor auxiliary reverser.

    7. Lubricate Breguet teeth of bothreversing gears.NOTE: Before installing bothreverser gear units (317C, 317D),check the Breguet spring (326).Normal loading is reached whenthe two arms of the spring attain3/4 the height of the stud of theconnecting wheel for auxiliaryreverser (317).

    8. Install automatic mechanism (asshown in figure 4) and lubricateupper pivots.

    Dial side

    1. The tension of the clutch leverspring (26) is correct when thespring is tangent to the settinglever (25) side of the guide markmade in the pillar plate (figure 3).

    2. The functions of the windingmechanism must be lubricated asusual.

    3. The centre pipe (106) requiresno lubricant, for the cannonpinion (94A) must turn freely onthe pipe.

    4. Lubricate the pivot of the minutewheel (8) and before fitting thelatter, make sure that the minutewheel spring, which is riveted inthe pillar plate, is properly set,i.e. that it is pressing against thepivot of the minute wheel.

    5. After fitting the minute-work cock(9) it is very important to check theendshake and the freedom of thecannon pinion (94A), and to makesure that the minute wheel springis pressing the minute wheel againstthe cannon pinion (94A).

    Checking the automaticwinding

    Wind up the mainspring six turns.Hold the movement or the watch in avertical plane and turn it slowly roundthe axis of the hands. The oscillatingweight will now wind up the main-spring and it should drop under itsown weight. Malfunction may becaused by excessive tension of theBreguet spring (326) or by frictionelsewhere.

    Checking the minutewheel spring

    After affixing the dial and hands, it isrecommended to check the functioningof the minute wheel spring bypushing the minute hand slightlyforward (clockwise) with the aid of apegwood stick. Under the tension ofthe spring the minute hand mustalways come back to its originalposition. This is necessary in order toovercome normal backlash in thehands caused by the cannon pinionturning freely on the center pipe.

    Calendar mechanismTypeThere are three possi ble positions ofthe winding stem, that is:1. Winding (innermost)2. Hand setting (intermediate)3. Date correcting (outermost)The date is changed instantly simplyby pulling the crown out from first tothird position.

    Disassembling andreassemblingDisassembling and reassembling ofthe day and date mechanisms can bedone without difficulty; however,special attention should be given tothe following points:

    1. When fitting the date correctorsetting wheel (631) make sure thatthe beak of the finger is locatedexactly opposite the point "E"indicated on the pillar plate, seefigure 8. One half finger width canbe tolerated on either side ofpoint "E".If the setting wheel (631) cannotbe set within the tolerance indi-cated, turn it through 180'. Ifnecessary, change it or change theintermediate date corrector settingwheel (629).Improper positioning of the datecorrector setting wheel (631)would cause the date indicator (576)

    weight functions normally with nocontact against the back of the case.

    2. With crown in intermediate position,turn the hands clockwise to make surethat the day and date indicators jumpcorrectly at approximately 12 o'clockmidnight

    3. To check operation of the instantdate setting mechanism: withcrown in innermost position. pullcrown out through intermediate tooutermost position. Date mustadvance.

    Setting the day and the date

    1. With the crown in the intermediateposition, set the day by turning thehands in either direction untilcorrect day appears In the dialaperture.

    2. Set date by moving crown backand forth between the innermostand outermost positions until thecorrect date appears in the aperture.Push crown in.

    3. Set the time with the crown in theintermediate position, turning thehands a further 12 hours if thesetting is for P.M.

    to advance either two days at atime or not at all, when using thestem to change the date.

    2. After having fitted the intermediateday wheel (609, cal. 11 AOACB),turn the calendar mechanism bymeans of winding stem and ensurethat the finger of the date indicatordriving wheel (574) comes be-tween two teeth of the inter-mediate day wheel (609) as indi-cated on figure 7, this to preventthe said finger from butting againsta tooth of the intermediate daywheel (609)

    3. To fit the day dial disk (591). presson it lightly and, with the aid of apointed tool through the hole, pullthe day jumper (586) backwards(towards the stem) in order to setit between two teeth of the day star.

    4. A dial rest (148) is necessary oncaliber 11 AOACB when fitted witha flat dial, as well as on othermodels as the need arises.

    Checking the movementin the case

    1. After fitting the movement into thecase, make certain the oscillating
