Since 1999, our family has been dedicated exclusively to the breeding and showing of our English bulldogs.

We live in the pristine mountains of Costa Rica, central Ameri-ca, where our dogs are raised in clean air and a spacious out-door environment- since they truly are part of our family.

For some time now, we have had the priveledge of winning many national and international titles, many of which were won by pups we have sold locally and overseas. We were awarded Bulldog of the year on several occasions, and have won two of the most prestigious dog shows in Latin America. To mention a few: *Championship of the Americas and Carribean 2014 (Costa Rica) judge: Mr. Greg Eva - BIS; MultCh Montaña Mística Candela. MultCH Tanner at Montaña Mística.*Championship of the Americas and Carribean 2007 (Mexico) judge: Mr. Ed BivinMulTBISS; MultBIS; MultCH Chopper at Montaña Mística. *Specialty Show World Dog Show 2007, our beloved MulT-BISS; MultBIS; MultCH Chopper at Montaña Mística.*SICALAM and SICALAM Specialty Show 2007- MulTBISS; MultBIS; MultCH Chopper at Montaña Mística. Presently, we are breeding imported European bloodlines (En-gland, Hungary, Spain) with our local lines (Costa Rica, Mexi-co, U.S.A) and are having great success in improving the over-all health and structure of our puppies.

Cherry Eye: Glen KolencCherry Eye: Glen Kolenc

Introducing Glen Kolenc

My Frenchie story and how I became Dr. Frenchie started way back in 2002 when I visited my brother and his family in the beautiful South of France and I met my first French Bulldog, Nell, owned by my brothers mother in law. Nell had the sweetest, most unique nature of any dog I’d met.

She certainly left her mark on me & over the next 4 years while living and working as a vet in the UK I got to see her a lot on my frequent vis-its to France.Out of my 4 years in the UK, 2 of those years were work-ing in a clinic that specialised in brachycephalics – it became apparent to me that Nell wasn’t just a unique dog with intriguing mannerisms; but her personality is what all Frenchies are like.

Fast forward to 2009, Talia (my now wife) and I were on a night out in Paris and met a French Bulldog sitting and riding in the back of a Ves-per!!

We thought this boy, Jean-Luc, was the coolest dog ever. We had re-cently been discussing that as we had started a (human) family, Talia wanted to realise her dream of breeding dogs.

Meeting Jean-Luc & having such fond memories of Nell made it easy to decide which breed that would be.We returned to Australia and after a lot of searching, we found our first French Bulldog, Gucci-Rose and she became the founding dog of Chewington French Bulldogs. He is also now Dr Bulldog....

What is Cherry eye and whats it all about?

Cherry Eye is a common condition of dogs and it commonly affects all Bulldog Breeds. Dogs have a 3rd (inner) eyelid and at the base of this eyelid, there are glands that produce tears. These tears are important in maintaining good eyeball health.

In some dogs, these glands swell up and lose their attachment down at the base of the 3rd eyelid, and this swelling pops up and becomes visible as a pink/red lump.

Cherry Eye is generally a cosmetic problem that looks a lot worse than it is, but sometimes it can become dry, irritated and infected. This can cause ongoing irritation.

If your dog has a mild case of cherry eye it can usually be massaged back in, by gently massaging the lower eyelid up and around to help it go back into place. Try doing this with a warm cloth and over time it should pop back in. Now it may keep popping out randomly and there is nothing wrong with trying this each time however the propertreatment of cherry eye is to have it surgically stitched back in place, below the 3rd eyelid, so it is not visible, but it is still there to do its job (which is to produce tears).

Now this comes to my main point – The actual Cherry eye should never, NEVER be removed. EVER! This is one of the most basic fundamental principles we are taught in vet school, about Cherry eye management.

However – sadly I commonly see and hear about Cherry Eyes getting surgically removed. A lot of the time this can be done without any harm.

Cherry Eye: Glen Kolenc

Bullish Magazine: April 2015 Page:102

Page 103: Bullish April 2015

However – in about 20% of the dogs that have the cherry eye removed, will develop a very sore dry eye due to the loss of tear production, which occurred after the cherry eye was removed.

This condition, coincidentally, is called “Dry Eye”. Dry eye leads to life-long sore, dry, irritated eyes. The cornea (the clear part of the eyeball) can become ulcerated, or eroded through. The only way to manage dry eye is to administer drops every day onto your dogs eyes, to stimulate tear production. These drops are very expensive and need to be given for life.

In summary, if your Frenchie or Bulldog develops cherry eye, it can be managed conservatively, unless it becomes irritating for them. If sur-gery is to be done, the cherry eye should be surgically replaced, by a vet that is competent in this procedure (not all vets are).

I would encourage you to ask your vet how many cherry eye’s they have replaced, and what is their overall success rate. If you aren’t hap-py with their answers and you don’t have confidence in them, seek a 2nd opinion or treatment with an eye specialist. Cherry eye’s should NEVER EVER be removed.

Proper front end Assembly

In a correct Bulldog profile the back of the forefoot will be directly below the withers, as shown in Figure 1.

Notice that this will emphasize the fullness of chest and depth of brisket in front of the foreleg.

Conversely, Figure 2 shows the back of the forefoot to be under the neck, which I learned rather recently is a result of a short upper arm (humerus).

As a result, there is little or no visible sign of forechest and depth of brisket in front of the foreleg........When viewed from the front, dogs similar to Figure 2 can appear to be somewhat “shallow chested,” and will not have the much desired fullness of forechest.

Annette: Bulldog Story

This weekend me and my brother went with our bosses to our holiday home. It was the first time this year!!! We call it holiday home because it is our second home where we go to when the weather is perfect for us, we bulldogs.

I will give you an idea why it feels like holiday there; We have special outside lounge beds there with special soft carpets, the most of the day we can lie in the sun till we can hold it no more, there is enough room to lie down out of the wind, the home is in front of large water so when we want to cool of all we have to do is walk to the waterside and dip our nipples. There is lots of private land where you can hide and observe everything is happening without anyone seeing you…..so it is a sport for us to scare other dogs who are walking by unsuspectingly…but only the one who ask for it and because it is so big you can urinate unnoticed when it suits you …..that last thing is something our bosses don’t like.

Because of the space and the water we often get bulldog friends who come along. Last year we had a big party and we were four female bulldogs at once …..wauw what a party that was…..that day I called our holiday home a heaven home.

It was almost impossible to keep track of all that four beauty’s. I made it my task to give every girl enough attention, and my brothers task was to play with them in the water. After a rainy winter I don’t see the pur-pose of getting my skin more hydrated then it already is. So I leave the water part to him.

Bullish Magazine: April 2015 Page: 119

Page 120: Bullish April 2015

But I digress….what do I mean by giving each girl enough attention;

Make sure you give them enough confidence to approach you

When they approach you make eye contact

Let them smell you and smell back….at first smell there head and then slowly move to the back...

For you humans it might feel smutty but the licking part is also import-ant…girls like that it makes us feel connected…..

When they want to drink; you say ladies go first

Give them the best spot in the sun and then go lie subtly beside them

There are a lot more success factors but you now have an idea what I mean...

So you can imagine to divide your attention over four girls and do all this man that’s hard but satisfying. So I am looking forward to the party season again. Yeah! Bring it on baby…..

I am wondering what kind of image you have of me so far?

I hope you think WOW that dog is in shape and in the prime of his life. Because that’s the way I feel. And no I don’t have the so called mid-life-crisis I am too young for that. My human granddad is in that phase right now. Or at least that’s what my bosses talk about. His hair is really long, like the hippie style.

Annette: Bulldog Story (cont 2)

Bullish Magazine: April 2015 Page:120

Page 121: Bullish April 2015

He wears colored clothes most of the time not suitable for his age, he has his fourth car in two years. And he started taking motor lessons ……so he can tour with other guys. Despite of all the stories and his behavior I think he is a cool dude.

Why? I had a tough start of life. My mother died when my brothers and sisters and I where only five weeks old. So that was hard for us. My front legs are not the way they are supposed to be. One of the bones in both legs didn’t grow as he supposed to grow. So walking was hard for me the first months.

My bosses where very concerned and took me to the vet. They made pictures of my bones. I was diagnosed with a name I can’t remember but since that day I get special forage. I have no idea what’s inside but it helps.

Walking became more easily and my muscles began to grow. They even made me do swimming lessons. That was not a success because as you already know I hate water so I refused to swim. With all that special measures I became a normal bulldog.

Nowadays I feel great…… I feel like I can rule the world. So I feel con-nected to my granddad. He is also a free spirit like I am. I once heard the more older you get the more crazy you become….well I agree and like to add….the more happy you become……So I live life for the full-est! And I hope you do to…..till next time!

INTERVIEW TO TRUDI FERGUSON FROM MELAFELLA BULLDOGS (UK) BY DAVID MARTINEZ

What was your beggining on the breed? Why did you choice the en-glish bulldog?

My husband Ian introduced me to the bulldog, as he had owned a bull-dog previous to meeting me, he took me to Chappark bulldogs to see a litter and the rest is history

What means your kennel name “Melafella”? Was it your first choice?

Melafella was our second choice, and our Affix was taken from the term ‘Mellow Fellow’ and as we are from the North east of England our local dialect would say ‘Mela Fella’ hence the name.

When did you decide to start breeding Bulldogs, which were the breed-ers that caught your attention and why?

I bred my first litter in 1999 and only to have my own bred dog in the show ring, the breeders/kennels that caught my eye were BRITISH-PRIDE, and BELUSHI, I saw BELUSHI Woodcutter (Dylan) at a show and wanted him, fate meant I would have the privilege of later owning him.

For a better interpretation of the standard? As it should be for you The Bulldog?

A male should portray a male and a female should be feminine. For me Balance, Health, and Movement.

TRUDI FERGUSON

Bullish Magazine: April 2015 Page: 127

Page 128: Bullish April 2015

What would be the items to be followed by clubs to control the breed?

The majority of Bulldog Clubs in the UK work alongside the Bulldog Breed Council for the welfare of our breed, this should always be the case. The bulldog today is a healthier dog, we all strive for this.

What can you say about hereditary problems?

Heredity problems may exist, in all breeds, its for all breeders to erad-icate problems, and no breeder should bred a dog with known prob-lems, any breeding should be for health and temperament.

How would you define a good stock of breeding and more importantly for you the male or female? why?

The foundation of a kennel is a good brood bitch, having healthy breed-ing bitches and choosing a stud which will compliment your line. I al-ways remember this saying a dog should be fit for function.

Do you think that there are secrets in breeding? What would you tell someone who begins to show or breeding?

I don’t have any secrets to breeding and as far as I’m aware most Bull-doggers are very open about breeding as we encourage helping each other. As for helping a newbie my advice, don’t buy the first puppy you see, listen to advice, visit litters and breeders, go to breed shows, and when starting to breed certainly don’t be kennel blind, as for showing remember you always take the best dog home, always be a sportsman, when you win be gracious and when you loose even more so.

TRUDI FERGUSON (cont 2)

Bullish Magazine: April 2015 Page:128

Page 129: Bullish April 2015

What are the most important bloodlines are currently following in En-gland?

All bloodlines are important, they have produced the bulldogs of today, this question is tricky as it will depend on what lines the individual is following.

Which would be a dog that you now present, would you use to enrich your breeding?

Multi Int Champion Jabberwocky’s Cloudless, Henry, a balanced, healthy male, with perfect movement.

What are the conditions and characteristics that should have a dog for show and how it should be presented to look better on the ring?

A show dog should be balanced, good head, and correct jaw, it should be as the breed standard describes, as for presentation both dog and handler should be well groomed, clean, free from dirt, in pristine condi-tion.

Do you believe that there are dogs that are born to win?

YES, some dogs are Born To Perform, sometimes the question arises is it the dog or a handler that wins a show ????.

TRUDI FERGUSON TRUDI FERGUSON (cont 3)

Bullish Magazine: April 2015 Page: 129

Page 130: Bullish April 2015

When you are judging what order of importance given to the head, structure, movement, type, etc..?

The dog has to portray the breed standard, for me when judging its the head, jaw, bone, feet and a free tail, I strongly think as I have said previously, dogs should portray a dog and bitches should be feminine.

In the movement of a dog what is more important to you? The step seen laterally, front or from behind?

Theres nothing better in movement for me than a dog walking towards you walking its width, No paddling or knitting, if a dog is built right it moves right.

What kind of judge are considered? Strict?

A strict judge, my answer to this is you have to forgive some aspects, but you can’t forgive bad faults.

What makes you say what the winner in a final close?

The dog with that WOW factor, the dog/ bitch I would want in my kennel at home.
