The Mind of Christ

St. Paul says, “have this mind among yourselves, which was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.”

Have the mind of Christ in you. And the mind of Christ is humility. Jesus emptied Himself of Himself. St. Paul also says, “do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves.”

Now that part about counting others better than yourselves needs some explanation. The humble person is not necessarily the one who always thinks lowly of himself. It’s not necessarily humility to constantly think that everyone else is qualitatively better than you. One Christian author wrote, “the humble person is not one who thinks meanly of himself, he simply doesn’t think of himself at all.” At least the humble person doesn’t think of himself at in terms of priority. To the humble person, it is always the other who takes priority. And so by saying we are to count others better than ourselves, Paul simply means that we take others into consideration first, every time, rather than ourselves.

It seems natural for us, in our fallen condition, to be self-oriented, self-interested, and self-directed. We like to think of ourselves as autonomous, self-made individuals with inalienable rights. We’re prepared to go to the mat if we feel any of that is threatened. But these are the very things of which Jesus emptied Himself. And the emptying of self and the humbling of self, to put others before the self, these are the mind of Christ.

It’s hard enough for mere mortals to do that. Now think of what it means for the Son of God, who knew equality with God, to empty Himself not only of all self-interest, but also of His own Godliness. What a step downward it was for God to become a man. To say that it would be like a man becoming a worm doesn’t even come close. Jesus gave up what was rightly His in order to become one of us to save us. The magnitude of how much He loves us, and what He did for us cannot be measured.

But there is another aspect of humility. Humility means facing or accepting the truth about oneself. For us that means facing the truth that we are sinners. And it also means that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us and that we are loved by Him more than we know. For Jesus, the truth about Himself is that He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. And those who follow Him rejoice at His coming and praise His Holy Name and shout ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Only a truly humble man could rightly accept such praise from His followers without letting it inflate His ego. Only the humblest of all men could so deny Himself and be obedient even to the death. And it is certain death, which Jesus ultimately rides toward as He enters Jerusalem amidst the adoring shouts of praise and the waving of the palms. What was on His mind as He began His final week on earth? It was to count others before Himself, to do the will of His Father and not His own will. That is the mind of Christ. Have this mind among yourselves, which was in Christ Jesus. Amen

Los sentimientos de Criso

San Pablo dice: " "Procurad tener los mismos sentimientos que tuvo Cristo Jesús" Él, siendo de condición divina, no se apegó a su igualdad con Dios, sino que se redujo a nada, tomando la condición de servidor, y se hizo semejante a los hombres. Y encontrándose en la condición humana, se rebajó a sí mismo haciéndose obediente hasta la muerte, y muerte en una cruz". Ten los sentimientos de Cristo en ti. Y el espíritu de Cristo es la humildad. Jesús se vació de sí mismo. Nuestra Epístola de hoy comenzó en el versículo seis del segundo capítulo de la carta del apóstol san Pablo a los Filipenses. Justo antes de eso, san Pablo dice, "no hagan nada por rivalidad o vanagloria, que cada uno tenga la humildad de creer que los otros son mejores que él mismos". Ahora esa parte de creer que los otros son mejores que ustedes necesita alguna explicación. La persona humilde no es necesariamente la que siempre tiene un humilde concepto de sí mismo. No es necesariamente humildad pensar constantemente que todo el mundo es cualitativamente mejor que tú. Un autor cristiano escribió: "El humilde no es uno que piensa mal de sí mismo, simplemente no piensa en sí mismo en absoluto". Al menos la persona humilde no piensa en sí mismo en términos de prioridad. Para el humilde, siempre es el otro quien tiene prioridad. Y así, al decir que debemos contar a otros mejor que a nosotros mismos, san Pablo simplemente quiere decir que tomemos en consideración a los demás primero, cada vez, más que a nosotros mismos. Parece natural para nosotros, en nuestra condición caída, ser auto-orientados, auto-interesados y auto-dirigidos. Nos gusta pensar en nosotros mismos como individuos autónomos, salir adelante por sí mismos con derechos inalienables. Estamos preparados para ir a la alfombra si sentimos que algo de eso está amenazado. Pero éstas son las mismas cosas de las que Jesús se vació. Y el vaciamiento de sí mismo y la humillación del yo, para poner a otros ante el yo, éste es el espíritu de Cristo. Es muy difícil para los simples mortales hacer eso. Ahora piensa en lo que significa para el Hijo de Dios, que conocía la igualdad con Dios, vaciarse no sólo de todo interés propio, sino también de su propia piedad. Lo que fue un paso hacia abajo que Dios se convirtiera en un hombre. Decir que sería como si un hombre se convirtiera en un gusano ni siquiera se compara. Jesús renunció a lo que era suyo para convertirse en uno de nosotros para salvarnos. La magnitud de cuánto nos ama, y lo que hizo por nosotros no puede ser medido. Pero hay otro aspecto de la humildad. La humildad significa enfrentar o aceptar la verdad sobre uno mismo. Para nosotros eso significa enfrentar la verdad de que somos pecadores. Y también significa que siendo aún pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros y que somos amados por Él más de lo que sabemos. Para Jesús, la verdad acerca de Él, es que Él es el Rey de Reyes y Señor de Señores. Y los que lo siguen se regocijan de su venida y alaban su Santo Nombre y gritan: "¡Bendito el Rey que viene en el nombre del Señor!" Sólo un hombre verdaderamente humilde podía aceptar correctamente tales alabanzas de Sus seguidores sin dejar que creciera Su ego. Sólo el más humilde de todos los hombres podía negarse a sí mismo y ser obediente hasta la muerte. Y es la muerte segura, a la cual Jesús en última instancia cabalga cuando entra en Jerusalén en medio de los gritos de adoración de alabanza y el agitar de las palmas. ¿Qué estaba en Su mente al comenzar Su última semana en la tierra? Era tomar en cuenta a otros antes que Él, para hacer la voluntad de Su Padre y no Su propia voluntad. Esa es el Espíritu de Cristo. Tengan estos mismos sentimientos entre ustedes, que estuvieron en Cristo Jesús. Amén

CHAPEL CLOSURE The Blessed Sacrament will be reposed before the noon Mass on Wednesday, March 28th, and will be exposed at the usual time on Monday, April 2nd.

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer.

The lines for the opportunity to see a rock star are indelibly long. The Star of all Stars, Jesus, humbles Himself to share a personal one on one hour, and only a few “wise virgins” fill up their lamps with this wondrous love freely given by Christ. How will He be able to recognize us at the end of our earthly exile if we become as the “foolish virgins’ who are too busy to show love and adoration for this awesome gift that is our Mighty Lord Jesus?

This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from.

This beautiful and inspiring program will take place on the First Saturday of each month, to pray for the end of abortion and the culture of death, attend Confession if desired, and satisfy the request of Our Lady of Fatima to honor Her Immaculate Heart and help bring about peace in the world.

We invite you to learn about and be a part of this special devotion. Join us before the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe as we pray and sing for the world. Offer personal intentions to Our Lady for your children and families. The 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass will follow.

The Rosary is prayed at 4:30 pm. before the Saturday and Sunday afternoon Masses. It is also prayed at 7:15 a.m. before the first Sunday Mass by teams of rotating Rosary Leaders. The Daughters of Notre Dame are currently accepting Easter Memorial’s. A special Memorial Mass will be said on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at the 7:45 a.m. Mass; names will be published in the weekly bulletin. Envelopes for donations are located in the back of the church in the narthex. Donations may be placed in the collection basket or dropped off at the Pastoral Center. Deadline for intentions is Sunday, April 1, 2018.

The Rosary Making Ministry will meet on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Please call Rita Funk at (830)258-6093 for location site.

This ministry makes and supplies Rosaries to the missions and military troops. Training supplies are provided. Once you learn to make the Rosaries, they can be made at home at your own pace. Forty Cans for Lent St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry

Lent is upon us, and fasting, prayer and almsgiving are a very important part of this season of the Church. The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is always in need of foods to distribute to the needy in our community. This is a wonderful way for all of us to participate in almsgiving and assist our neighbors. Here are some suggestions:

While the Pantry usually has a good supply of canned corn and green beans, more is always appreciated. One item of food each day of Lent\A small sacrifice with a huge yield! Collection boxes will be located in the Narthex during the Lenten season.

Court, by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Fr. Rolheiser commented, “This isn’t a sports

loved literature but soon realized that his English students were far out-numbered by his athletic students in

their letters of appreciation to him after graduation. Coach Wooden believed in hard work, discipline and preparation for success

in sport and in life. Winning was not as important as doing one’s best. Sport was almost a metaphor for developing men of good and honest character.

Because he was genuinely interested in his students he was also able to empathize with their struggles to

develop mentally and to claim their rightful place in a changing society during the turbulent national times of the 1960s and 1970s.

The book illustrates “education” as described by Henri Nouwen as a safe space in which student and teacher can exchange their unique gifts.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS – CABALLEROS de COLON

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center and Father Kemper Council 6409 of the Knights of Columbus thank all who participated in our blood drive on March 11. Twenty-one donors contributed twenty-three units of blood, many designated for operations for Jenna Kunz Thurman after delivering her baby. Additional donations for her may be made at any other blood drive.

El Centro de Sange y Tejido del Sur de Tejas y el consejo del Padre Kemper 6409 de los Caballeros de Colón, agradecen a todos los que participaron en nuestra campaña de donación de sangre el 11 de marzo. Veintiún donantes contribuyeron con veintitrés unidades de sangre, algunas designadas para las operaciones de Jenna Kunz Thurman, después del nacimiento de su bebé. The second collection that we benefited from the weekend of March 17-18th was $2995. Thank you for your generosity. So far for 40-cans for Lent, we have received 3539 lbs. and $610. Donations help us assist our

brothers and sisters in need in our community. Like the social security senior that was going to skip meds every other month until we offered to help with the co-pays. Like the Rockport resident that was flooded and needed a driver’s license ASAP. Also for 500 families that came to us this winter with heating bills way above their means; or the 1600 people that we gave five meals each in January. We dream of the day that we go out of business because no one is in need. But it is not happening yet.

Sacramental Preparation

for 2018 - 2019

We will have a meeting on Wed April 11 from 5:30 pm, in English, in the Social Center for ALL 1st grade parents and anyone else whose child needs preparation to

celebrate the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist for the upcoming year. This includes children or teens at Notre Dame School, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, EDGE, LIFETEEN and Children’s Faith Formation.

All parents must sign up for an interview with Denise or Alma BEFORE your child can be put on the list of candidates for sacrament preparation. Do not hesitate to call or email us if you have any questions or are unsure if this meeting is for you.
