Following Christ is Good Evangelism – Part 2
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus calls His disciples and tells them He will make them
fishers of men. In this, I hope we can find some comfort regarding this subject of evangelism. For starters, I will say that as I read it, the Gospels and the New Testament clearly are saying that all Christians are called to share in the task of spreading the Kingdom of God. Evangelism belongs to the nature of the Christian Faith. And I will also say that yes, some people are called by God to be evangelists. That is, they are either called and equipped by God to be full time evangelists, to make their living preaching and bringing those who do not yet know Christ to a living belief and faith in Him, or they are gifted to evangelize in their personal lives, like those people who you might meet on a plane or a bus who approach you and try to convert you.
But I will also say that I believe there are many misgivings and misunderstandings about evangelism. And I will also say that no, I do not believe God means for literally all Christians to stand on street corners shouting and handing out pamphlets, or trying to convert strangers on planes and buses. Some can do that, others just can’t. However, in the broadest and most general terms, as Christians, the way we live our lives should in some way shape or form reveal Christ to the world around us, and attract others to Him. How do we do that?
Evangelism is not necessarily a matter of know how, it’s not a matter of quotas, it’s not a matter of strategy, it’s not a matter of salesmanship. Notice that Jesus says to His disciples, “I will make you fishers of men.” He doesn’t say to them, “Hey, what are wasting time for? Get out there and bring me a dozen converts each by this evening!” The first, and most important thing Jesus says to them is “Follow Me.” If we are truly following Jesus, that is a way of living our lives that will reveal Him and make Him attractive to others.
It is the living Christ, Jesus whom we introduce to the world by following Him, by the way we live. Not a religion, not a book, not a theory. He is the attractive one. Jesus is the One doing the evangelizing.
Matthew tells us that when Jesus called to Andrew and Peter first, and then to James and John later, they all immediately dropped what they were doing and followed Him. Immediately. How do you get someone to do that? What would make someone leave his livelihood and his family to go off into the unknown following this man who simply called him to do so? Was it because Jesus was such a charismatic person? Did He simply charm people into following Him? Was it because He had a way of almost hypnotizing people to get them to do what He wanted? No. This was no cheap imitation, no impostor. This was no Jim Jones or David Koresh. 2000 years from now, no one will remember their names. To be continued . .

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:
Friday 4:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m. Saturday 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.
If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.
viernes 4:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m. sabado 10:00 a.m.—11:00 a.m.

THANK YOU The Welcoming Committee extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped organize and who attended Dorothy's farewell luncheon. There are too many to name, but sharing your gifts of Time, Talent, Treasure, as well as tasty dishes, meant so much. To carry on the metaphor Dorothy shared, every stitch contributed to the beauty of the tapestry.
Please pray for those who have died, and have gone to their eternal rest with the Lord, especially for Janet Quinn . Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Currently for your relaxing summer reading, we have
filled those shelves with fiction. The Education of Little Tree, by
Forrest Carter is Carter’s auto-biographical remembrances of life with his Eastern Cherokee Hill country grandparents, a touching account of
1930s depression-era life. The book opens with accounts of daily life in harmony with all of nature, which will thrill conservation fans. There are extended passages about the characters of the household dogs, to charm animal
lovers. History buffs will love the first-person account of the Trail of Tears, the blow-by-blow account of an incident in 1867 in the turmoil following the Civil War, and the running narrative of the dangers and rewards of having one’s
livelihood depend on producing bootleg liquor. Human rights advocates will shudder at the account of the State’s assumption of control over the orphan. And for anyone interested in religion, there is a wealth of anecdotes to witness
to the pivotal place of Christianity in the lives of the people. Books may be checked out by writing your name and phone number on the circulation card inside the back cover of the book, and leaving the card in the special box at the BooksToBorrow
station. You may keep the book as long as you are using it. If someone else needs it, we will phone you.

Please join us Thursday, September 12th as we begin a new year studying
the Gospel of St. John.
John’s Gospel offers an “eagle’s eye” view of Je-sus’ life. Not only is He clearly Priest, Prophet, and King, He is also the Eternal Word, the Son of God. Meet the cast of the wedding at Cana, the Sa-maritan woman, the Adulteress, and Lazarus as they confront who He really is. In addition, Jewish feasts reveal the pivotal moments of Jesus’ life and mission as the Promised Messiah, sent be-cause “God so loved the world.”
Whether you are new or experienced in studying the bible, you will gain a deeper understanding of Sacred Scripture! All you need is your bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church!
We meet every Thursday from 10am-12pm from September through April upstairs in Kem-per Hall, Room 205. We do break for the holi-days from Thanksgiving through the New Year. If you want additional information,
please call Julia Bradford at 281-748-4124 or email at: [email protected].
