Giving thanks is a major theme in November. Some
historians believe that Sukkot may have inspired
Thanksgiving. It is well known that the Pilgrims based
their customs on the Bible. They knew that Sukkot was an
autumn harvest festival and they may have fashioned the
first Thanksgiving after the Jewish custom of celebrating the success of the
year’s crops. Both holidays focus on sharing President continued on page 4

I am,” when I called upon them, they also
declared Heninee to Beth El.
This month we honor those individuals
who delivered Divrei Torah on Shabbats
while I was away from the congregation
either on vacation or attending a rabbinical
meeting. Some of our volunteers also
presented their talks at our Synaplex
Shabbats and on Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur. I greatly appreciate that I was able
to call upon each of them and always their
answer to be me was, “Yes.”
We as a community should be very
proud of each of them for their contribution
to Beth El and to the Jewish People. When I
returned to Beth El after being away I
always heard wonderful feedback about our
Divrei Torah presenters.
Divrei Torah means ‘Words of Torah.”
I am very thankful for their words of
teaching and Torah and how enthusiastic
each of them is when asked to participate.
There is a saying that there are 70 faces of
Torah. In other words, the Torah invites
interpretation and each of us brings our own
experiences and understanding of its words
and teachings. This is what our Divrei
Torah people do for us.
We will have a special Kiddush lunch
in their honor. I hope you will join me on
November 5 in thanking them for their
dedicated service to Beth El.
I look forward to honoring and
thanking each of them:
Shalom and Blessings,
Rabbi Stephen Grundfast
gratitude for a bountiful harvest.
A computer search of this topic reveals that the origins are more complex and controversial. We do know that the Calvinists and Puritans who landed on American shores were called Pilgrims. During the two centuries following the Reformation, several groups recognized the importance of once again emphasizing their Hebrew heritage. One of these groups was the Pilgrims who then founded Pilgrim America. We also know that before coming to the New World that the Pilgrims lived for a short time among Sephardic Jews in Holland. They may have had an opportunity to learn more about Sukkot at that time. The Pilgrims had escaped England in 1608 and stayed a decade before leaving for the New World. The first Thanksgiving celebration by the Pilgrims was in the fall of 1621.
The Pilgrims considered themselves as the children of Israel fleeing “Egypt” (England), crossing the “Red Sea” (the Atlantic Ocean) and emerging from the “Exodus” to their own “promised land” (New England). The Pilgrims thought of themselves all as children of Abraham and under the Covenant of Abraham.
Much later, George Washington proposed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789 but there was not full support across the colonies and no uniform observance. Thanksgiving has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,” to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Sara Hale spent 40 years championing the creation of this national holiday.
Thanksgiving today is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November since President Franklin Roosevelt changed the timing in 1939 at the suggestion of Fred Lazarus Jr., founder of Federated Department Stores (now Macy’s) to create a longer holiday shopping season after Thanksgiving. Congress finalized this timing in 1941.
It would be easy to give the traditional Thanksgiving rendition of the holiday. I am thankful that we have access to more information sources including discussions of insensitivity to Native Americans in our usual treatment of the holiday,
In November, our Thanksgiving celebration gives us the opportunity to reflect on all that we have spiritually and materially. Both Sukkot and Thanksgiving encourage us to stop and acknowledge the many blessings that God bestows upon us each and every day.
I hope each of us will have an opportunity to fully enjoy this holiday that can be shared by all faith communities across the nation. I hope that the holiday will provide great opportunities for families to enjoy each other, will provide an opportunity to invite friends who may not have family near and will provide an opportunity to contribute to organizations who provide meals to individuals who do not have homes and others on this holiday.
