BASICS OF THE FAITH What does the Catholic Church believe? What does the Church teach?

Where do we get these teachings? Are you comfortable discussing your faith

with family and friends? Would you like to update or refresh your knowledge

of the faith? If you would like to explore these questions, join us on the first Sunday of each

month at 8:45 to 10:15 am in the Maximilian room for coffee, tea, cake and a

PowerPoint presentation on a chapter of the United States Catholic Catechism

for Adults (USCCA). The information in the USCCA is supplemented with other sources, including

brief video segments. We’re currently studying the Ten Commandments. You’re welcome to attend

any or all sessions. No prior knowledge or preparation is required.

Our next session is October 5, 2014. The topic will be the First Commandment. You may also view

narrated Power Points of previous sessions online at your convenience at www.basicsofthefaith.org.

There is a discussion forum for you to post questions or comments.

For further information or to be placed on our email list, please contact Anne Chavez at

YOUR VOTE COUNTS! Archbishop Chaput has said

“One of the duties of Catholic

discipleship is the exercise of

mature, faithful citizenship.”

In an effort to promote their

call to faithful citizenship, the

Bishops of Pennsylvania have

once again authorized a parish-based, nonpartisan

voter registration effort to occur in parishes. At

St. Maximilian Kolbe, this effort will be led by the

Knights of Columbus and will take place after all

Masses this weekend September 27th and 28th.

The Knights of Columbus have partnered with the

Pennsylvania Catholic Conference to execute this

nonpartisan registration drive and to encourage all

Catholic citizens to exercise their right to vote and

thereby fulfill their civic duty and contribute to the

civic life of their country and their communities.

WHO CAN / SHOULD REGISTER?

• A citizen of the United States for at least

one month before the next primary,

special, municipal or general election.

• A resident of PA and the election in which

(s)he wants to register and vote for 30 days

before the next primary, special, municipal

or general election

• At least 18 years of age on or before the

day of the next primary, special, municipal

or general election.

New registrations for the upcoming elections must

be received (postmarks will not count) by Voter

Registration Service no later than Monday

October 6, 2014.

You may also REGISTER ONLINE AT

www.votespa.com

Too many have given too much for any American citizen not to vote.

outdoor Cross.

For the safety of the animals, please make

sure that your pets are leashed or in their pet

“If you have men who will exclude any of

God’s creatures from the shelter of

compassion and pity, you will have men

who will deal likewise with their fellow

men.” —St. Francis of Assisi

20th ANNUAL CHESTER COUNTY

RED MASS

ALL ARE WELCOME The Chester County Catholic Lawyers’

Association extends an open invitation for all to

attend the celebration of the 20th Annual Chester

County Red Mass on Thursday, October 16, 2014

at 5:00 p.m. at St. Agnes Church, West Chester.

The principal celebrant and homilist for the Mass

is Father Chris Walsh.

The Red Mass has been celebrated in Chester

County for the past nineteen years to honor the

Holy Spirit, the divine source of those blessings

which are the heralds of justice in the courtroom,

government offices and for law enforcement

personnel. Our Chester County tradition continues

this venerable practice that began in the 13th

century when the Red Mass traditionally opened

the judicial year.

Although it is a tradition for the legal community,

we invite anyone who wishes to join in the

blessing of this Mass to attend. Members of the

judiciary, court staff, lawyers, prosecutors and

public defenders, paralegals, legal secretaries, law

enforcement personnel, judicial support personnel

and all other persons are welcome to attend and

join us in prayer.

MONTHLY FOOD DRIVE

The regular monthly collection

of NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS for the needy

of Chester County will take

place next weekend, October

4th and 5th. Please leave your

donations in the bins in the

vestibule. Your generous contributions of

food are greatly appreciated.

SPIRITUAL READING GROUP For the past few years, a

spiritual reading group for

women has been meeting and

discussing various interesting

and thought-provoking books,

all with a spiritual theme.

Participation has strengthened our faith and

fostered meaningful and supportive bonds with

one another. We have read about many saints,

including our own patron saint, Maximilian

Kolbe and Mother Teresa. Our authors have

included Fr. Robert Barron, Dorothy Day, Fr.

Ron Rohlheiser, Henri Nouwen, Amy Welborn,

C. S. Lewis and Willa Cather. The group meets

on the first and third Thursdays of the month,

from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM in the Kolbe

Room.

Our first meeting of the season will be on

October 2, when we will begin discussion of

Sacred Fire, a Vision for a Deeper Human and

Christian Maturity by Fr. Ron Rohlheiser. If

you think you may want to join us or would like

more information, please call Pat Krause at 610-

793-2968. Participants need not read every

book, allowing for flexibility in attendance.

RESPECT LIFE NEWS Next Sunday, Oct. 5th the Respect Life Committee will have a table with pro-life materials

and a Pro-Life Union bulletin with updates on the latest happenings in the area on pro-life

issues. We will also be collecting donations for all the work being done and the various

efforts being done in behalf of the many causes for Life. We can use some volunteers to

help man the table at any one of the Masses on that weekend. If anyone is free for a few

minutes after Mass, please call Joan Carbo at 610-431-3686.

*************

On Oct. 5th on Respect Life Sunday from 2:30 to 3:30 PM there will be the Annual National Life Chain in

West Chester on High and Market Streets in front of the Old Court House. There will be a one hour vigil to

stand silently in prayer with signs for life, bearing witness for the innocent pre-born whose many lives have

been taken since Roe vs Wade was made law in 1973. This is an opportunity to put into action our belief in

the sanctity of life and to do as St. John Paul II often told us, “We must defend life!” Signs will be

distributed in front of the court house by designated captains to all those who attend.

HELPERS OF GOD’S PRECIOUS CHILDREN This Saturday, October 4th is The Helpers of God’s Precious Infants Vigil Mass at St. Agnes Church in West

Chester at 8AM followed by a Rosary pilgrimage to Planned Parenthood (8 South Wayne Street). St.

Maximilian Kolbe parishioners are invited to join the Helpers to be a witness and prayer warrior to pray for

an end to abortion. Just by our presence and prayers, we are able to encourage those going into Planned

Parenthood. We can let them know that there are other safe environments and true health care facilities they

can go to for their care. Mother Teresa says “We may not always be successful, but the important thing is

being faithful!” Please consider joining our 100 prayer warriors in praying for an end to Abortion.

After the Helpers Rosary at Planned Parenthood, there will be a gathering across from Planned Parenthood,

representing 40 Days for Life as “Family Day” where they will be collecting all baby items such

as: diapers, wipes, lotion, clothes (size 4’s particularly needed). These will be distributed to Birthright and

other organizations where needed. If you can’t get there on the 4th of Oct. Joan Carbo will deliver your

items for you; if you leave them in the Lost and Found Room of the church during the week.

If you have any questions or would like to sign up and volunteer for any of these activities, please call Joan

Carbo at 610-431-3686.
