Tim, a high profile criminal psychologist, who worked on many key cases providing insightful evidence to judges, was raised in privileged home with his father being a nuclear physicist who helped design the first atomic reactors in the UK, Canada and ultimately in Lucas Heights in Sydney. At the age of 7 his father had left the Atomic Energy Commission and he became a professor of physics at Sydney University, going on sabbatical leave every 7 yrs. On one of these sabbaticals they lived in Berkeley, California, finding his next-door neighbour to be Albert Einstein’s son. His daughter Evelyn Einstein was Tim’s babysitter!! She was a student radical at they became great friends.Tim ended up doing his masters degree in Sydney. At the age of 25 he was offered the position as resident psychologist in Parramatta Jail, at the time the toughest jail in Australia, It was full of multi recidivist inmates. The sandstone building was overbearing and had the ominous jail stench of Lysol. People wolf whistled and “hey baby” as he walked down the corridors. One of the interesting people he met there was Carl Synnerdahl, who had robbed about 16 banks during the 70s. This was in the days before terrorism when you could get a passport easily. Carl got out of the country with 11 different passports – Interpol was aware of about 2 of them. He lived successfully and crime free in Japan for a while. Every year he would go on holiday and on one he went to Bali returning through Hong Kong using one of the passports Interpol knew. He was arrested and taken to Long Bay Jail where he faced the prospects of a 15-year minimum. He was trying to figure out how to stay out of trouble when there was a blackout, which gave him the most far-stretched idea. Nevertheless he decided to pretend that he had gone blind. He understood the psychology of people going blind very well, typically being in a state of denial. He bumped into people, tripped over chairs. Eventually he was taken off to many ophthalmologists including Fred Hollows who wrote that he didn’t understand it but on the balance of probabilities, Carl was blind. So he got 3yrs instead of 15yrs. He was sent to Cessnock Jail, given a brail watch, a white cane and Labrador puppy! Carl started going to church and realised he couldn’t keep this up forever so he decided he was going to be a documented miracle by throwing away his cane. He ended up having a relationship with vicar’s wife. He told her he could see and she was overwhelmed with guilt. He ran out of jail and escaped for 5 hours, arrogantly holding a press conference before returning! Carl ended up at Parramatta jail where he met Tim and became his clerk. Carl wrote

a book called “Hoodwink”. He was Tim’s introduction to many things.Tim set up a treatment program for juvenile crime: “A Day In Jail” Scheme. A young offender who was looking at going to jail was sent to Parramatta. They were treated like a prisoner for a day: met in the morning, finger printed, put on prison uniform, polish locks, locked up, eat the jail stew, etc. In the afternoons 4 jail inmates counselled them. The great success rate of the scheme realised after a 2-year follow-up 60% of the young offenders were not seen in court again. At a conference where he spoke about his program David Szyme, a well know Melbourne psychologist, invited him to join his practice. So Tim moved from Sydney in 1981 and after about 20 years, in 1999 David dropped dead of a heart attack. During the time together they set up a Trauma Debriefing company with a team of about 30 psychologists that would typically go in after bank hold ups to counsel people. But Tim’s passion was forensic psychology as opposed to managing a large company. So they sold out of the company in 1991.In the interim he had taken on an academic post at with RMIT, joined the advisory board with the Dept. of Criminology at Melbourne University. He was working more than 100 hours a week when his first wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the age of 40. They had 2 children and developed a severe depressive illness and started using cocaine to deal with this depression. So Tim was struck off for 3 years fro his drug problem with cocaine. Eventually this cycle of work, family trauma, depression and cocaine came tumbling to a halt.Tim stopped using cocaine on 12 Sept 1999 and hasn’t touched it since. So while his practicing certificate was suspended for 3 years he became visiting professor at Bond University. He had head shown continued page 4

Grow up. Spend money wisely .

tail up to work assiduously to get his ticket back to re-establish his credibility in his practice.Tim has been back at work for about 13½ years with a practice in both Sydney and Melbourne. He remarried for a while and has 5 children aging 32 to 17 of whom he is extremely proud. Tim spoke of more recent cases with the issues of of addiction and depression. He sees many middle-aged men who work way too hard, spend a lot of time away from their families in pursuit of their career and then something happens emotionally and neuro-chemically in their mid 40s. They snap. There is a very high rate of suicide and serious problems of substance abuse in the community. He feels he was lucky - he recovered. He was determined to deal with his problem. Tim sees many clients in high profile jobs, working 80-0 hoours, feeling guilty because they’re not with their kids. They feel insecure because eif they don’t work so hard they might lose their jobs.He also sees a lot of younger teenage kids from good homes, good parents, who are caught with a bag of cocaine or ICE. Tim believes we need to recognise the problem, the dynamics of it all and to educate everyone about the mental and physical health effects and the consequences of being convicted. Tim was lucky to be only given a good behaviour bond. A drug conviction for a 19-year-old professional student, as he saw last week, picked up by the dog squad, will affect his whole life. Tim believes we need to regulate the use of drugs and to educate the community about the perils of drug use. If there is a mental issue, medication is the best as it is so counter productive putting these youths in jail. We need to jail the suppliers and those higher up the tree.

Now Tim doesn’t work as hard. He has done some of the major terrorism cases in Australia including Lodhi the architect who was looking at all the military installations in Sydney. He was the first person convicted under John Howard’s terrorism laws. The frightening thing about him was how readily he blended into Australian society. He was well educated and maintained his innocence throughout. When Tim went to see him he was in a Guantanamo Bay-like suit with manacles and leg irons. Four prison officers brought him to Tim. When told that he had been found guilty and asked “How do you feel about it?” his response was “If it’s Allah will then it’s Allah will.”Tim feels it’s very interesting and troubling in the world today with all these issues. Tim’s book was born out of the encouragement of Pan MacMillan who felt his tale was quite extraordinary. The book includes much of what he wrote 20 years ago when he ran out of steam but was reactivated with intrigue and his great command of the English language. His book is number 4 on the Best Sellers List now and includes other solutions to social problems as well as his personal journey. This refreshing honest view of life o the other side was a pleasure to hear. Report by Robyn Lichter

PP Peter Johns started things off by announcing that his dear friend and Charter Member Robert Ward had died last Thursday. Peter said that he had been having a bit of a hard time for a while now and it would have been a blessed relief for his family. Peter said that he was concerned as there were only 3 Charter members left and he is getting to the top of that list and that there is only one way off. Peter said that Robert was a dear friend and a friend to Rotary and he asked us all to raise our glasses and drink to the memory of our dear friend Robert.

Chairman Tony Naughton then said that there were apologies from PP Bill Howley, Graham Gude, PP Stan Rankin and PP Chris Tuck and said there no makeups on the list. Tony then introduced President Damien Hellard. Damien was very pleased to see the good attendance last week especially the Sorrento mob. He then introduced the guest speaker - Tim Watson-Munro. He then welcomed guests and potential members in Sylvie Berchick and Carole Drysdale. He also welcomed members of the Rotary Club of Brightion Beach and soon to be inducted as members of our club at the 3 August meeting in Julie Avery, Keiran Cromie, Ann Holland and Anthony Langley.

Damien then asked members to introduce their guests. Jim Hay introduced his wife Kathleen, David Smyth introduced his wife Audrey and PP Rob Tucker introduced the boys from.Sorrento in Trevor Martyn and Phil Mellett and included PP Peter Johns which Damien asked the sergeant to take note of as he thought it a bit cheeky.

Norm Thomas passed on a message from Mercedes-Benz Brighton about a special sale that was happening last Friday night which was a Sellout of Models. He said that he had been to his sale a couple times and his wife Jan had bought a Mercedes-Benz this way and saved heaps of money at Mercedes-Benz Brighton. He said it was by invitation only but as they are our Platinum Club Sponsor anyone from the club, their family or friends would be welcome to turn up. He suggested that they ring up first and go down and get themselves a bargain.

Robyn Lichter introduced guests Jeanne & Wayne Carroll who are also potential members.

Damien then wished two members a happy birthday. PP Ian Mence for his 80th on 18 July and Bulletin Editor Max Martin for his 74thon 20 July.

Damien also mentioned that he spoken to Cameron Ward about the death of his father Robert Ward and that an email from the club had gone out to all members and partners to inform them of the sad news. Cameron said that funeral arrangements would be notified and that there would be a service at St Andrews and a possibe wake at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club (see write up page 8).

Thanksgiving Service for the life of Robert Ward OAM

A service was held at St Andrews Church Brighton for Robert Ward on 26 July at 2pm. Robert died after a long illness on 20 July and amongst his many contributions will be remembered for his outstanding commitment to independent cinemas being the longest serving ICA Board member before his retirement in late 2015.Robert brought many innovations to the industry over his long career and was granted the ICA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 for his contributions to our sector which are greatly appreciated.

He was also awarded an OAM for his services to the motion picture industry in the 2016 Queens Birthday honours.

The service at St Andrews Church was overflowing with family, friends, former workmates and of course many Brighton Rotarians.

It was presided over by The Rev’d Canon Jan Joustra with music provided by organist David Johnston. Robert’s son Cameron opened proceedings with some observations of his father’s life in the film industry and said that they got used to famous actors coming for lunch or tea. Cameron said his father would have loved the large turnout as he loved an audience.

We then heard from Robert’s brother Andrew who said it was hard living up to his older brothers achievements. David Kilderry then spoke more deeply about Robert’s involvement in the theatre industry and of the different ventures they were associated with. PP Peter Johns topped it off by giving Robert’s Rotary story. It was a wonderful story of a man who was a giant in the motion picture industry in Australia and of course a Charter Member of our club.

The service finished with the pall bearers carrying Robert’s coffin out to the tune of “There’s No Business Like Show Business” played by the wonderful David Johnston.

We were then all invited to the Royal Brighton Yacht Club for drinks and canapes to bid a final farewell to Robert Fraser Ward.

The Track Home read at Rob Ward’s service by PP Alan Pinkus.Author unknown

I have come to the end of the trackand now the sun has set on me.I want no sorrow in a gloom-filled room.Don’t cry for a soul set-free.

Miss me a little, but not too long, and not with your head bowed low.Remember the times that we once shared.Miss me - but let me go. Now my journey has endedand I am sleeping the powerful sleepbe happy when you hear my nameand smile - please don’t weep.

When you are lonely and sad at heartgo to the friends we knowand bury your sorrow in doing good deeds.Miss me - but let me go.

IVAN’S HACKERSIVAN’S HACKERS

11

The Story: ‘Twas cold and windy as Ivan’s Intrepids faced the course. And it showed, with David Bodycoat’s score of 50 taking out the off-the-stick win.

Noteworthy players were Ivan Vojlay who captured just about all of the individual awards, and John Carroll, who after investing heavily in building up his handicap managed to come in equal third on handicap this week. The other noteworthy effort was yours truly, having improved his game by a remarkable 12 strokes. Coming in with a 62 doesn’t do that achievement justice.

The winter eclectic competition winners will be announced at our August 05 game. Next week (Saturday 29) will be another of our Pink Ball games to decide who buys coffee.

To refresh everybody’s memory, each group has a pink ball. The person who three-putts or more is required to play with the pink ball until the next three-putter takes it away.

The humiliated player holding the pink ball at the last hole buys coffee, and wins the pinkie award.

Speaking of next week, a balmy 19 degrees awaits, with rain not expected until long after we’ve finished.

En Passant:A cold and blowy morning, wind chill minus ten.Sunshine’s gone a-missing, returning who knows when. What’s the score? Don’t ask - I’m really out of form. But I don’t care - I wear a cap - at least my bald bit’s warm.

WELCOME!! July has been a very busy Membership month. We have inducted 3 new members and hosted a second of the revitalized tradition, the Fireside Chat. The evening

turned out to be extremely successful for new, upcoming and prospective members to mingle, get to know each other, the tireless membership committee, some board members and senior club members. Everyone’s generosity of bringing food and wine that added to the thriving conversations and friendship was so indicative of true Rotary spirit. This is what solidifies our future “service above self”! The board members’ brief presentations about their view of their role and activity in the club helped great discussions about what Rotary is, the benefits of RCB and the issues that our club face. Although this was time cut out of a precious weekend, everyone said they were glad to have come to learn more about our incredible organization.
