DSWCI Short Wave News – December 2009 3

Editorial Greve, December 19th, 2009 Dear friends, members and readers all over the World, Welcome to the last issue of our bulletin for 2009. Due to the Christmas Holidays you will probably have SWN into your hands just after the New Year. Despite the late arrival of this SWN into your mail box, let me here wish you all a

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEARMERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEARMERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEARMERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR with lots of good DX in the year to come. Thank you so much to all those of you who has sent contributions to the bulletin – small or big – during the year. Please continue to submit your contributions also in the New Year to come. Already now we have got some Christmas greetings from all over the World from our members. Thank you very much for those, which we do appreciate very much. Christmas time is also time for e.g. books. This is also the case for the well-known radio books, WRTH and SW Frequency Guide. I know that some of you already have got WRTH from Amazon bookshop. I myself got the SW Frequency Guide just one day after it was issued from Klingenfuss publications. The annual Radio St. Helena Day was on November 14th. The conditions in most part of the World were poor or even very poor. I myself could just hardly hear the station from 2300 to 2330, and so was the situation in most Europe. There have been talks after the St. Helena transmission, that may be the St. Helena Day should be moved to sometimes in September or October, in order to get a better reception, comparing with the last two or three years where the reception has been poor. Another reason for the poor reception can also be blamed on the low sunspot numbers, which we have had now for a very long time period. Look also at page 10 re. Radio St. Helena. The very last Cancer & Capricorn contest has just ended. It was arranged by our Czech member, Jaroslav Bohac during 21 years, but now it has come to an end, mainly because of lack of contestants. I hope that you participated into this con-test. A big thank you very much to Jaroslav for arranging this contest for so many years. From our member on Sri Lanka, Victor Goonetilleke this good news:” I am thinking of re-launching the Union of Asian DXers as a monthly E-newsletter with in depth study of radio in South Asia and DX possibilities in South Asia. This is also a means of sharing long years of dxing experiences; radio listening, propagation and DX-possibilities from South Asia. It will not be a reflector like DX India, but like DX-Window of the D SWCI. We should have some on this list who were members of the UADX before we stopped printing in the pre Internet era. Any-one interested, please contact me. Thanks G. VICTOR A.GOONETILLEKE 4S7VK, "Shangri-La," 298 Madapatha Road, Piliyandala. Sri Lanka. Tel: +94 11 2614098. Mob:+ 94 771953106 E-Mail: [email protected] . gmail: [email protected] . Skype: Victorgoonetilleke. (Goonetilleke) I wish Victor good luck with this project. Until next month, I wish you best 73’s hoping to hear from you

on or before the below mentioned deadline - Kaj

Here is the list of names of the 12 winners. Each will receive a 2010 QSL Calendar from the Rhein-Main Radio Club of Frankfurt, Germany. The RMRC will con-tact each winner by email as soon as possible. Amongst the 12 winners were these DX-Window contributors: Finland, Jari Savolainen, India (South), T. R. Rajeesh and Spain, Manuel Méndez. Thank-you to all who participated in Radio St. Helena Day 2009. Gary Walters, R. St. Helena, Robert Kipp, Rhein-Main RadioClub.

Letters from our members Our new member Jim Evans, Germantown, TN, USA writes “I have been listening to shortwave broadcasts since 1959. I began as a DXer, then spent about 12 years as a program listener, and returned to DXing in 1979. I concentrate on the tropi-cal bands and on difficult to hear transmitter sites on all bands. I have heard 211 countries and verified 201 (per the NASWA county list). My equipment consists of RX-340, R8B, E1, and ICF- SW7600G receivers. I also enjoy researching equipment and experimenting with various types of antennas, especially those of the stealth variety. I live in a neighborhood that restricts the installation of outside antennas, so most of my antennas are in the attic. I'm currently experimenting with various locations and loop sizes for a new Wellbrook ALA100M. In addition to shortwave broadcast DXing, I have re-cently become interested in long wave beacon DXing and do a lim-ited amount of ultra light medium wave DXing using a Sangean DT-440W pocket-sized portable. I am retired so now have time to en-joy my hobbies. Best regards, Jim.” Thank you very much for your letter, Jim. It sounds interesting with your experiment with antennas. Let’s hear more about this project! We should also like to have a picture of yourself e.g. in front of

Radio St. Helena Day By Robert Kipp

GermanyThe reception conditions here in the Frankfurt area were poor again this year. The RMRC Chat, which I was monitoring, showed mostly poor to no reception in almost all of Germany during the RSD program to Europe. Now and then someone would post a message that the reception was a bit better for a few minutes, but I did not have any report of good or "armchair" copy, except, at times, from Sweden, Russia, Japan, and India. As a receiver, I used an old Yaesu amateur radio transciever with very good SSB-filters. The RMRC and I used a 100 meter long wire as outdoor antenna and an antenna tuner, which was grounded fairly well. In spite of the problems, I was able to identify about eight songs, and that was "much better" than in 2008, when I could only ID two songs from my home QTH. There were a few moments, when I could < almost > understand what the male presenter ( to Europe) was saying. I did not hear any of the program to North America or any other target area ( except Europe). Signal description: At 2240 a SINPO of 2 5 3 4 1. At 2340 a SINPO of 2 5 3 4 1. On the RMRC Chat, some people thought that the beam antenna at RSH may not have been pointed in the proper

direction or turned at the proper time. There is NO indication that this may have happened. A few people still complain about the "modulation". What they mean is the "bandwidth" of the modulation. The amateur radio transmitter that is used for RSD has, most likely, a smaller audio modulation bandwidth than the old commercial transmitter that C&W used back in the 1990's. Even using the equalizer in the studio at RSH, the audio bandwidth is still quite small, and the filters in the receiver at the QTH of the Dxer have a real job to do. Even with a good SSB-receiver, if there is almost no signal, then there is almost nothing to copy or for any audio processing device to enhance. Back in 2006 and in some years of the 1990's, we did have "armchair" copy here in Europe. During a RSH-test in 2007, I was on Karmoy island in southwest Norway, right on the Atlantic coast, at a huge amateur radio club station, the RSH signal absolutely pinned the S-meter of the big amateur radio transceiver, when we were using a vertical antenna for 160 meters or a multi-band beam antenna. RSH will make every effort to find the best time and date for the RSD 2010 program to Europe. (Kipp)

DSWCI Short Wave News – December 2009 13

Medium Wave News By Ray Browell

[email protected] Ascension Island 1638 After a few recent enquiries I received the following confirmation on the 20th November from Penny Peters of the VT group on Ascension : Ascension Radio (Volcano Radio) is no longer operating on 1602 kHz but has moved to 1638 kHz. Dxer Mauno Ritola received information from another source that 1638 kHz may be silent at present due to MW antenna problems. Patsy Moyce from AIG Enquiries confirmed that the BBC local service is no longer broadcasting on AM 1485 kHz. I trust that the information may be of interest. [later] I received confirmation this evening from Russel Yon c/o the U.S. Base on Ascension Island that Volcano Radio is not operating on mediumwave at present. The station is broadcasting on 98.7 FM but there is uncertainty regarding future MW operation. See email below: From: Russell Yon To: 'Gary Deacon' Sent: Nov 29, Subject: RE: Radio Ascension (ZD8VR Volcano Radio) enquiry. Just to confirm that Volcano Radio only operates on 98.7 FM. 1602 and 1638 kHz frequency has been deleted due to changes in contractual work and antenna usage. I don't know if and when we will operate in the AM Band again, I might be able to confirm this at the end of the year. Regards, Russell. Gary Deacon-AFS, <http://www.capedx.blogspot.com> dxld Nov 27 Germany The former RIAS mediumwave site at Hof has been put up for auction. The leaflet explains that the transmitter building has later been used by the police for training: http://www.immobilien-auktionen.de/de/naechste_katalog/pdf/katalog_63.pdf (This was, after using other frequencies in the pre-GE75 era, a 40 kW daytimer on 684. The original tube transmitter had been replaced by a new Nautel in 1989. The site closed down permanently on 30 Sep 1994, the antenna masts were in bad shape and have been demolished shortly afterwards. I don't know where the almost new transmitter went to.) Kai Ludwig via DXLD

1179 Saarländischer Rundfunk - As of today SR Heusweiler will be on air around the clock: "1422Member" is an employee of Saarländischer Rundfunk, directly involved in the operation of the Heusweiler site, so this is first-hand info. (Kai Ludwig 2.11.2009) 1179 kHz is a Transradio TRAM 10 transmitter with 10 kW. It had been put on air in 2005 for Antenne Saar, a new talk program. Antenne Saar also relays RFI in French and DW in English, in order to ensure that nobody tunes in as polemics say. Only after lobbying from listeners they added RFI's German service to the program line-up, too. This transmitter uses the back-up antenna for 1422 kHz. Thus the frequency can not be too far away from 1422, because the back-up function (with a Telefunken, now Transradio, S 4002 transmitter) must still be ensured. If necessary 1179 will be taken off air in favour of 1422 of course. No idea why 1179, which is already at the fringe of the possible range. Probably the authority would have to be asked if no other frequency somewhere above 1179 kHz could be found. Heusweiler is about 100 km away from the 1440 kHz transmitter in Luxembourg. The reference is quite appropriate, since the high power service on 1422 was a retaliation for Radio Luxemburg on 1440. In last year the 2 x 600 kW Thomson transmitters from the early seventies had been replaced by a new 400 kW installation, dramatically improving the audio quality. The old facility has been polemically described as sounding like a pressure chamber loudspeaker that has been put into a tin. An allegedly authentic photo shows an audio filter with the high-pass set to 320 Hz. Kai Ludwig via DXLD 3.11.2009 via Ydun Ritz medium wave info

1485 AFN Bavaria put a new transmitter on air at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. They say that it took them quite some time to find an environmental-wise suitable location. So this is apparently indeed a new location, not the old one that had been closed down at some point in the past, probably towards the end of the nineties. For the new transmitter the engineer says that he hopes it will reach "to the autobahn", which would be about ten kilometres. The video footage reveals a quite simple antenna, just a long whip with some wires as top load. Note worth in the audio rack is an old analogue Optimod, almost dwarfing all the other equipment. Concerning the soldier (actually I was surprised about an AFN presenter only ranking as Private) announcing new FM coverage for Grafenwöhr, Vilseck and Bamberg, complementing but presumably not replacing 1107/1143 kHz: A few days ago a new transmitter in Grafenwöhr already went on air, on 98.5 MHz. Kai Ludwig via DXLD

After a period of quiet, DRM is noted back on air via 1593 on December 5th at 0730UTC tune. I assume this is Langenberg again - doing what this time? And unfortunately the antenna is sending loud signals in my direction. Via Noel R. Green

Holland Reception of the pop music station on 1395 - from Holland? - is only fair here in the NW of England in daytime (using a loop and a communications receiver - just a trace on a domestic receiver), and still with some skywave fading at 1200UTC. From around sunset the signal is much stronger, but with very bad selective fading and distortion - reminiscent of Luxembourg 1440 on a bad day. I wonder how far the groundwave of this high end frequency reaches without any skywave "interference"? via Noel Green India AIR Panaji B (Vividh Bharati) has at last changed its frequency to 828 kHz from 1539 kHz. The power is 20 kW. This is due to co channel interfernce from the Radio Aap Ki Duniya and VOA group of stations (programs) on 1539 kHz. Jose Jacob via dx-india

Does AIR Cuttack at 972Khz too have a similar frequency switch plan? VoA Radio Aap Ki Duniya at the same frequency (from Tajikistan?) messes up the reception in large parts of eastern India where a lot of Oriya listeners reside. Ashok Satpathy via dx-india

1000 kW DRM compatible MW Txer formally inaugurated at Bangladesh Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated newly commissioned 1000 kilowatt medium wave transmitter of Bangladesh Betar set up at a cost of more than 35 crore taka at Dhamrai today.Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad, local law makers and a large number of local people, among others, were present on the occasion. This new solid-state 1000 kW medium wave (MW) transmitter replaces the 36 year old valve type 1000 kW MW transmitter. The new transmitter is compatible for DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) broadcasts in future. The new transmitter of super power transmitting station at Dhamrai, Dhaka is the heart of the Bangladesh Betar & is used to broadcast radio programme covering 95% area of the Country. It broadcasts centrally produced radio programmes and plays an important role during natural disaster. Bangladesh Betar Dhaka Station broadcasted the inaugural function live while Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Rangpur and Sylhet regional stations of Bangladesh Betar relayed the proceedings simultaneously. The super power transmitter was originally commissioned on an area of 63 acres of land at Dhamrai with the assistance of the then Soviet Union government at the interest and direction of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1972. The broadcasting formally began on 16th may in 1976. Alokesh Gupta via DXLD

New Zealand According to David Ricquish in the current NZ DX Times, the following NZL AM stations will be soon on air: 540kHz The Word/Bible Radio, Christchurch NZL. 612kHz Southern Star, Nelson NZL. 1368kHz Southern Star, Whangarei NZL. 1377kHz The Word/Bible Radio, Dunedin NZL. Also some existing new NZL AM stations include: 576kHz The Word/Bible Radio, Hamilton NZL. 1026kHz The Word/Bible Radio, Invercargill NZL. 1314kHz Southern Star, Invercargill NZL. Other stations included in the list are ones that have been on air for awhile: 540kHz Rhema, New Plymouth NZL 657kHz Southern Star, Tauranga NZL. 801kHz Rhema, Nelson NZL. 1404kHz Rhema, Invercargill NZL. According to the Ministry of Economic Development's frequency register, the 540 kHz transmitter will be located at Ouruhia which is north of their own transmitting mast in Marshlands, this will bring the total to nine local stations. The Radio Network also has 855 kHz at the Ouruhia site which is currently not being used, when this is activated, that will be it unless someone buys more frequencies. Via mwoz

Norway/Sweden Arctic Radio Morokulien will be active on 1584 kHz from 28 December 2009 (in fact starting at 2300 UTC on 27 December), celebrating the 50th anniversary of Morokulien and the Arctic Radio Club. Their license is valid till 10 January 2010. Morokulien is a territory shared between Norway and Sweden. They have a shortwave station there too, but it is only for ham radio operation. Maybe one of our Scandinavian members can tell us a bit more concerning this interesting radio project. (Kuhl). I visited that unusual, joint territory in 1989 when the annual Conference of the European DX Council was held there. There was no border control, so we had our Conference in Sweden while we slept in huts in Norway 100 meters away. Harald Kuhl via Anker Petersen

Pakistan/USA The Voice of America (VOA) is expanding its reach across Pakistan. A new arrangement with Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) now allows VOA to broadcast Pashto language programs on medium-wave (AM) radio and Urdu broadcasts on FM stations for the first time. "We're delighted Pakistan's Cabinet has ratified our agreement with PBC," said VOA Director Danforth W. Austin. "This arrangement will allow millions of people in all parts of Pakistan to listen to the VOA's popular news and information programs." VOA's Deewa Radio, a Pashto language service for people in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, is now available on medium wave (AM) at 540 kHz from a transmitter in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province. From 1800 to 2200 daily, Deewa Radio's AM signal will broadcast news and current affairs programming plus call-in shows on politics,

literature and poetry. Deewa, which began in 2006, continues to broadcast nine hours of radio programming daily on shortwave, FM (transmitters located in Afghanistan) and Internet (www.VOANews.com/Deewa/). The perpetrators were obviously looking for copper, and did manage to steal some. The nearby ATU, which also houses parts in copper, was left intact though. Via Carlos Goncalves

Spain Things seems no to be very clear at RNE about the Arganda-1359 operation. After starting the 24h. DRM operation recently, the whole past week they were broadcasting in noise mode only from 1900z to @0700. During daytime the frequency was empty. This morning (Nov. 23rd 2009) they switched off the DRM tx. at 0657z and in some moment along the day they started in AM again. Now, at 2034z I can hear the Arganda tx. in AM. The past week the DRM operation did not contain the scrolling text announcing 24h. operation but only "RNE DRM ARGANDA-1359 KHz". M.Molano via DXLD

USA Date: Saturday morning (late Friday night) Feb 6, 2010. Time: 0000-0200 CST (0600-0800 UTC). Mode of Operation: 5000 watts (daytime pattern). Programming: classic country and oldies music along with tons of various sound effects. It should be fairly easy to identify the station, as our slogan is somewhat unique, "Monster Radio AM 1150". We also have TM Century jingles, including one used every hour for a legal id (spoken).."Southern Illinois Trusted Voice Since 1949, (sung) AM 1150 WGGH Marion" QSL Information: MUST send a self addressed envelope with at least 2 stamps, otherwise you will not get a reply. May I take this opportunity to wish all members a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Members news and tips are always welcome Ray China has almost a third of all AM radio stations currently broadcasting in the entire Asia-Pacific region today says the Radio Heritage Foundation. In the latest PAL AM Radio Log at www.radioheritage.net, there are almost 1,400 AM stations listed as on the air in China, out of some 4,800 stations across the entire region. In fact, just five countries account for 70% of all AM broadcasters in the region, with China followed by Japan, Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines. These are in addition to the many thousands of FM radio stations that are generally more popular with younger listeners today. Despite contemporary digital radio and decades of FM, the fact that so many AM stations remain on the air is clear evidence that life remains in the almost century old AM technology, even in modern technology mad China. However, the outlook is bleak for 13 of the 55 countries in the latest PAL Radio Guide, where only one AM radio station now remains on the air. In the Pacific there is just one AM radio station left in the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Kiribati, the Marianas, Marshall Islands, Norfolk Island, Palau and Tonga

"We are no longer in the air on shortwave. Some pieces of the transmitter are broken, and we have not found spare. God bless and goodbye." (R Cultural Coatán, via Méndez) GUYANA The National Communications Network (NCN) [ex Guyana Broadcsting Corp] is revamping its shortwave transmission system that will see the return of radio signals to interior locations and nearby countries. NCN Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Sattaur told Stabroek News that the process is being facilitated by the relocation of the company's radio transmitter at Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara. The company has since set up a new location at Canal Number Two Polder, West Bank Demerara. The Ogle Airport had requested that the company relocate its transmitter to facilitate the airport expansion process. The relocation opportunity will be used to revamp and modernise shortwave radio, making it more powerful on the air. (www.stabroeknews.com via Terry, via Kenny in Dxplorer). I presume the former GBC SW frequency 3290 and possibly 5950, which has been silent for several years, will be reactivated. (Kenny) INDIA 4850, AIR Kohima has been reactivated again; it was heard strongly in Hindi and English on an irregular schedule since Nov 11 (not daily). Its full schedule is: 0000-0415 1000-1600, but some days station signed off earlier, e.g. 1407 or so. English news are broadcast at 1530; there also are regional news in Hindi at 1340 with repeat in English. I heard it at 1600, Dec 04, with ID which confirms it is AIR Shimla, at that time the "Himachali Sangeet" programme ended and started a 'Airtel' sponsored Programe (the name sounded like “Apka Sandesh”) - though reception is very poor and like many other AIR transmeters - the audio level is lower than the signal when comparing with other stations, the anns also confirmed the AIR Shimla is on MW and SW. But they did not ann the frequencies. (Goswami, via Gupta) 6090, AIR Vivdh Bharthi program, 0830-1200, Nov 23, 24, 25 and 26, heard on this frequency. Earlier had a clear ID for “Radio Suara Islam FM” at 1552, so Salam FM probably started at 1600. On Dec 03 and 04 signed off at 1604*. Seems to just be an audio feed to fill in the time after the end of Radio Suara Islam FM broadcast and when they finally go off the air. Therefore would expect the timing of this audio feed to vary from a few minutes to half an hour, but do not think they will actually run the whole Salam FM program. Rather anticlimactic, as I had hoped for the full program, not just this teaser! (Howard) MALI 5995.00, R Mali, Kati, Bamako, 1901-1915, Sa Oct 03, News in English heard again. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 3240, WWCR, Nashville, TN, 0157-0158*, Nov 14, seems to be regular since Nov 08 with experimental broadcasts asking for reports on that. A bit overmodulated or distorted–seems a mixture of reduced carrier SSB and FM. Tried USB and the carrier is steady, better reception. The station was active overnight, Nov 13. So it seems to be a 24h operation. Also heard on Dec 05 and 06, say, at 2030-2040, stronger than previous days, but suffering from the same saturated/ distorted audio. (Nigro in Dxplorer and Slaen) VIETNAM An additional channel has appeared for the recently introduced East Sea Service. This is 11720 and appears to be active only during local daytime hours in Vietnam. I discovered this on Nov 8 from my field trip, with good signals in the period 0430 to past 0500, in parallel with 9635 and 9875. This is a 12 MHz Asian-mode event! (Padula) 5925, Voice of Vietnam, 1100-1115, Nov 24, music, 1101 a male and female give opening comments and news in Vietnamese, signal was steady at a fair level. Protest from our Chairman to Radio Prague To the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Ministerstvo zahraničních věcí Loretánské náměstí 5 CZ-118 00 Praha 1 The Czech Republic 16

th October, 2009

Subject: Future of Radio Prague International Dear Sir or Madam, I write to you today, because I have heard, you are considering closing Radio Prague International by the end of this year – a decision, if taken, I want to protest against on behalf of the Danish Shortwave Club International of which I am Chairman.

Personally I first heard Radio Prague on the 17

th of November 1957 on shortwave, and I have listened to

that station since – for nearly 52 years with great pleasure! It has brought me a thorough insight in what is happening first in Czechoslovakia, and later in the Czech Republic on the political, historical as well as cultural side which has been very rewarding! I attach a copy of a reception report to Radio Prague International as it was heard two days ago here in Denmark on shortwave with perfect reception.

I have visited the beautiful Czech Republic

more times as a result of my radio listening. In April 2005, the European DX Council (cf. www.edxc.org) organized its annual Conference in Prague where we visited at the top end of impressive Václavské náměstí the former Parliament Building which then was handed over to Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty. We also visited the Radio Prague building at Vinohradská 12 where we had a guided tour around the various studios and ended with a very informative dialogue with the Director of Radio Prague International, Ph. Dr. Miroslav Krupicka.

In conclusion, I am very impressed by the

developments of the Czech Republic during the recent years. But with President Vaclac Klaus blocking of the Lissabon Treaty which all member countries of the European Union, including the Czech Parliament, have agreed upon, and your considerations of ceasing this important information media of Radio Prague International on shortwave, I feel that your nation is heading backwards towards becoming an isolated nation in Central Europe. The Czech Republic and its friendly and hospitable people do not deserve that!

Sincerely yours, Anker Petersen

Chairman of the Danish Shortwave Club International

M I NI STRY O F F O REI G N AFFAI R S

Promotion

Prague, December 2, 2009 Ref. Nr.: 129223/2009-OKKP Mr. Anker Petersen Chairman of the Danish Shortwave Club International Udbyvej 11 2740 Skovlunde e-mail: [email protected] Dear Mr. Petersen, thank you very much for your letter of October 16, 2009. I would like to appreciate your interest in broadcast of the Czech Radio Prague. We are proud to have such a radio and there is no intention to stop its broadcast. The Radio helps promote the good name of the Czech Republic in the world and plays a key role also for Czechs living abroad. Great support and encouragement for Czech countrymen is also the Internet site www.krajane.net managed by the Radio. Due to current financial crisis the Government of the Czech Republic decided in June 2009 to reduce the state budget by 20%. Following the Government Resolution No. 715 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is obliged to reduce the budget of the Radio for 2010 also by 20%. According to the data received from the Radio the reduction will mean saving on all budgetary items and increasing of the Internet budget. The short-wave broadcast will be retained in reduced form. Foreign transmitters will probably replace some of the transmitters in Northern Bohemia. The broadcast in different languages should remain unchanged. Thank you very much again for your interest in the broadcast from the Czech Republic. If you have more questions please do not hesitate to contact directly the Czech Radio or our Ministry. Yours faithfully Dr. Robert Řehák Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rytířská 31 110 00, Praha 1 Czech Republic
