THE FIRST CATHOLIC THANKSGIVING

The first Catholic Thanksgiving on U.S. soil:

Don Juan de Oñate, the Basque leader of the New Mex-ico expedition, should become a name as familiar as Ply-mouth founder Captain John Smith or Puritan Governor William Bradford.

Juan de Oñate was from a noble Basque Spanish family that had become wealthy in the New World in silver mining. As a young man, Don Juan had led campaigns at his own expense in service to the Crown to pacify Indians near the northern out-posts of Mexico. In his late 30s, he married Isabel de Tolosa, the granddaughter of the conquistador Fernando Cortes and Isabel Montezuma, the daughter of the late Aztec emperor.

Don Oñate, age 43, and his expedition set out from Santa Barbara, the most northern Spanish outpost in Mexico, on January 26, 1598, under the symbol of the Cross and the au-thority of the Crown. He aimed to establish a short, direct route due northward through 200 miles of Chihuahuan de-sert, a trail that would later become part of the famous El Camino Real. The sprawling train he led was reported to spread out for three miles in length. It was a formidable sight: some 500-600 men, 175 of them sol-diers, many of them in armor, 83 ox-carts, 26 wagons and carriages, and over 7,000 head of live-stock.

Three months later, after a long, dangerous trek forging a new trail northward, on April 21, 1598, the exhausted expedition reached the banks of the Rio Grande. For the last five days of the march, the expedition had run out of both food and water, and the colonists had suffered a mind-numbing thirst. Don Oñate, seeing the extreme fatigue on the faces of the people, pro

LA PRIMERA ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS CATÓLICA

claimed a week’s rest on the river bank as scouts searched for a suitable place to ford the river and cross into New Mexico, what is the present-day El Paso, Texas.

Oñate ordered a temporary church to be constructed with a nave large enough to hold the entire camp. Under those boughs, on April 30, 1598, a Mass of Thanksgiving was said on the feast day of the Ascension of Our Lord, the Te Deum was sung and the Franciscans celebrated a solemn high Mass, the first Thanksgiving celebration in our lands. Don Juan de Oñate, took for-mal possession of the new land, called New Mexico: “In the name of the most Holy Trinity … I take possession of this whole land this April 30, 1598, in honor of Our Lord Jesus Christ, on this day of the Ascension of Our Lord ….” Then, after the Mass, the Franciscan priests blessed the food on tables abundant with fish, ducks and geese, and the 600-strong expedition of soldiers and colo-nists feasted. The celebration ended with a play enacting scenes of the native Indians hearing the first words of the Catholic Faith and receiving the Sacrament of Baptism.

This celebration in El Paso in actually was the first Ameri-can Thanksgiving. Both colonies – New England and New Mexico - were not the United States at that time. For a short while, New England could claim that theirs was our first Thanksgiving feast, but the moment Texas entered the Union as a part of the Ameri-can federation, this priority of the Puritan celebration can be contested. This First Thanksgiving included the MASS, a feast, and other celebrations of the Spanish Franciscan mis-sionaries and members of Don Juan de Oñate’s expedition in 1598 and actually predates our first Thanksgiving in 1621 at Ply-

mouth Rock, which took place 23 years later.

Blessing of the Thanksgiving Meal

(Light the table candles, if present.)

Leader: "It is good to give thanks to the LORD, for His love endures forever." (Psalm 136;1)

Loving Father, before we share this Thanksgiving Day Dinner, we pause to remember to thank You. It is You who have given each of us life and it is You who have given us the privilege of living in a wonderful, beautiful country. Thank you for this Thanksgiving Day meal which is set before us. Bless those who have prepared it.

Bless those, too, who do not have enough to eat today and make us generous in our gifts to them throughout the year. Like St. Theresa of Liseaux keep us aware of the Gospel. Like Blessed John Paul the Great, help us to live each day in your grace. Like St. Francis of Assisi make us grateful for everything we have.

Together: "Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy bounty through Christ, Our Lord. Amen."

WISH TREES 2012 The Wish Trees will be going up this year the weekend of November 24-25. As in years’ past. there will be a variety of tags on the trees to choose from. Please look

closely at the date on the tags; each organization has a different

deadline. In order that small items do not get lost, do not place gift cards under the trees. Instead, please turn these

in at the Parish Office. Those groups or individuals who would like to volunteer to

bring the gifts after mass down to the storage room in Sebahar Hall, please contact Karen Tsaparis at 630-917-0565 or email [email protected]. I would also welcome any volunteers who are avail-

Plenary Indulgence for the Year of Faith

As we continue to celebrate this "Year of Faith," we have the opportunity to receive a Plenary Indul-gence, which through the mercy of God, frees an individual (living or dead) from the temporal pun-ishment of sin. The Plenary Indulgence is gained by performing the indulgenced work and fulfilling three conditions--sacramental confession, eucharistic communion, and prayers (an Our Father and Hail Mary) for the Pope's intentions.

One can obtain a Plenary Indulgence during this "Year of Faith" by:

--visiting the church of Baptism and renewing one's baptismal promises;

--visiting one of the 'pilgrimage' churches in the Diocese and participating in a sacred celebration or spending time in prayer or pious meditation concluding with the recitation of the Our Father, the Pro-fession of Faith and invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy Apostles and patron saints:

the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet (Cathedral is opened from 6 am to 12:30 pm Monday - Friday, 7 am to 6 pm on Saturday, and 7 am to noon; 6 pm to 8 pm on Sunday)

and Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bourbannais (the church is opened from 8 am to 3 pm during the week, 8 am until after the 4:30 pm Mass on Saturday, and 8 am to 1 pm on Sunday),

--attending a Holy Mission and being present for three homilies, --attending at least three lessons on the Acts of the Councils, or the articles of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in church or any other suitable location. This information can be found on the Diocesan 'Year of Faith' website, www.dioceseofjoliet.org

“Taps” Paul Turner

When Catholics celebrate the funeral of a veteran of the U.S. armed forces, they may hear “Taps” played at the graveside. Although the practice does not appear in the of-ficial liturgical book, the custom is honored throughout the United States.

“Taps” was composed in 1862 as a bugler’s call commanding troops at the end of the day to extinguish their lights and prepare to sleep. The 24-note tune was adopted by both Union and Confederate forces. Because of the melody’s connotations with sleep, buglers soon started playing it for military funerals.

The celebration of a Catholic funeral extends over three stages-a vigil service at the church, funeral parlor, or home; the funeral Mass at the church; and the burial service at the grave. Whenever military honors are appropriate, they are observed near the conclusion of the graveside service; a flag is presented to mourners, guns are fired into the air, and “Taps” is played. The presider at the graveside usually conducts the Catholic service first, pausing near the end for these military honors. The presider may then regain the leadership role by dismissing the people afterward.

“Taps” was composed for a bugle, which explains why is employs only four pitches. Bugles do not have the same range as trumpets. Nonetheless, “Taps” can be played effectively on a trumpet. Some organizations providing this service do not have musicians available to play “Taps,” so mourners may actually hear a re-cording from a trumpet-shaped device, held to the lips of a uniformed “bugler.” The Catholic liturgy always favors live music, not prerecorded music. Anyone who can play the four pitches of taps would give fitting tribute to a faith-filled veteran by offering to perform it live for funerals. This bulletin insert originally appeared in Ministry & Liturgy magazine, a pastoral planning resource used by the worship leaders in your com-munity as an aid for better liturgy. Liturgy of the Word for Children, “Gather the Children,” 9:30 a.m. Sun-day Mass Were you curious about Gather the Children? Wondering what age group the liturgy is geared? Questioning whether you should you go with your child? Here are some answers!

Children between the school ages of kinder-garten and fifth grade are called forth by the presider at the beginning of Mass, then blessed. They follow the Minister of the Word to the chapel, where they sing and hear the reading in age appropriate language. The children return to the church for the begin-ning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Parents are always welcome, but do not have to go with their kindergartners through fifth grad-ers. Preschoolers are welcome, too, but they must be accompanied by a parent.

The Traveling Madonna of St. John the Baptist

The Holy Rosary is one of the many great gifts given to us by our Blessed Mother. In it, we meditate on the life of Jesus and our salvation.

The Traveling Madonna is a ministry which seeks to promote the Holy Rosary. In John 19:27, Jesus said to John “Behold, thy Mother” and from

that hour the apostle took her to his home. Let us follow the example of John and open our doors to Mary.

We are looking for families to accept the Statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary into their home for one week. This will continue throughout the year. The only request is that you keep her in a very special place in your home. A Knight will bring the statue to your home and if desired, pray the Rosary with your family. A Knight will return the following Saturday to pick up the statue.

If you are interested in becoming a host of the Traveling Madonna please contact:

The Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human De-velopment (CCHD) provides funding for groups that create lasting change and uplift the poor in the United States. In the last five years, over 36% of CCHD’s grants have gone toward advancing education, support-ing economic development, and improving housing in low-income neighborhood. You can help participate in this tradition today. Fight poverty in America. Defend human dignity. Give to the CCHD Collection.

CATHOLICS FOR LIFE

Parishioners' generous contributions for the lapel LIFE roses were sent to Waterleaf Women's Center, 2849 East New York in Aurora (1-1/2 blocks west of the Planned Parenthood where we have been praying during the 40 DAYS for Life). Their free and confidential services include pregnancy testing, compassionate advocacy and counseling, ultrasound exams, adoption information and referral, financial assistance, school and employment assistance, post-pregnancy support through a MOM2Mom program, post-abortion support, STD information, optional group events to connect with those facing similar situations, and childbirth classes. If you or someone you know needs help, it is available at 1-888-98-WEHELP (888-989-3435) or text 630.360.CALM (2256) or go to www.waterleafwc.org/Home

Thanks to your generosity, we continue to see God working through us at Waterleaf. We are so grateful for all the gener-ous gifts we receive from our donors.

One of the many clients we have recently helped is a young woman directed to us by an area deacon. She had confided in him that she was pregnant and had no choice but to abort. He referred her to us, the team performed a pregnancy test, researched resources and options and called to check on her. She sadly admitted that she had no medical insur-ance and had made an abortion appointment. We prayed, but were broken hearted for her. She had a change of heart and cancelled her appointment with Planned Parenthood. Days after she decided to keep the baby, she got a call from Veteran's Assistance notifying her that her pregnancy was indeed covered by the VA! She is keeping the baby and has a doctor's appointment and continues to receive our support. We have since found out that she is carrying twins and is due on December 25th! What a blessing!

Thank you so much for your recent donation of $400.00! We hope you enjoyed reading the Newsletter and we so appre-ciate your support! It is through the generosity of friends like you that we are able to help so many young women choose life fort heir babies!

Please continue to pray for our ministry as we continue to pray for you!

In faith, Sheryl Finn Director of Marketing & Development

We are so blessed at SJB to have an amazing teaching staff. However, many of us only really know the teachers we come in direct contact with through our kids. We have created a series called "In the Spotlight" to help introduce our teachers to our entire school and parish community. The teachers answered a series of questions about themselves. We have included photos as well to assist all in recognizing our educators at school events. We hope you enjoy this information!

In the Spotlight My name is Gina Baumann. I’m happy to be back at St. John the Bap-tist School for my second year of teaching fourth grade! Working here has been a very positive experience for me; the students are well-behaved and eager to learn, and the staff has been tremendously suppor-tive and helpful. Teaching is a career change for me. I worked in the field of Marketing, before I stayed home to raise my four children. I later pursued my passion for teaching by earning a degree from Na-tional Louis University. I gained experience by completing long-term maternity leaves in the Glen Ellyn and Lombard school districts before arriving at St. John’s. Upon joining the St. John’s team, I experienced a

true sense of family, which included the staff, the parents, and of course, the blessed children. My husband, Tom, and I live in Wheaton, along with our four children, Anneliese, Eliza, Robert, and Melanie. We attend St. Petronille Parish in Glen Ellyn, where I taught religious education classes. I’m anticipating another successful year of teaching and sharing my faith in God at St. John the Baptist School.
