Men's Continental Olympic Qualifier Tournament
USA, Canada Reach Title Match
Long Beach, California, May 11, 2012 – USA and Canada are one victory away from earning a 2012 Olympic Games berth by reaching the title match of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament being held May 7‐12 in Long Beach, Calif. The two teams will play for gold at 20:00 Pacific Time on May 12 with Olympic dreams coming to fruition to the winner. USA defeated Cuba 21‐25, 25‐18, 25‐17, 25‐16 in a semifinal round battle of world powerhouse teams. Cuba entered the match ranked No. 1 in NORCECA and No. 5 in the world, followed one step behind by the USA at No. 2in NORCECA and No. 6 in the world. In the first semifinal match, Canada rallied to defeat an inspired Puerto Rico team 22‐25, 25‐23, 19‐25, 25‐23, 15‐11 to move into the title match. On the final day of competition, Cuba will meet Puerto Rico at 17:00 in the bronze‐medal match. Mexico and Dominican Republic will face off in the fifth‐place match at 15:00. The day begins with the seventh‐place match at 13:00 between Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago. United States 3, Cuba 1 USA’s Matt Anderson scored a match‐high 24 points with 17 kills on 24 errorless attacks in the four‐set win over Cuba, while Clay Stanley contributed 13 points in the victory. David Lee and Russell Holmes tallied 11 points each from the middle blocker position. Cuba was paced by Wilfredo Leon’s 15 points, followed by 14 points each from Fernando Hernandez and Rolando Cepeda. USA held sizeable margins in blocks (14‐4) and aces (10‐5) while taking advantage of 26 Cuba errors. “First I would like to congratulate Cuba on another great match,” USA Coach Alan Knipe said. “It seems as though every time we meet it’s a tough match and tonight was no different. We didn’t start off the way we wanted to, but some of that credit goes to Cuba. I want to give a lot of credit to our passers tonight because Leon and Hernandez can put a lot of pressure on you. I was extremely proud of that effort as the match went on but more importantly of the group because they stayed together and kept focus. I am looking forward to the staff getting together to discuss Canada and getting our team the rest they need.”
Canada 3, Puerto Rico 2 Canada received balanced scoring with five players in double‐figure scoring led by Fred Winters’ 19 points. Toontje Van Lankvelt, Gavin Schmitt and Justin Duff all notched 13 points for Canada and Dallas Soonias chipped in 12 points after entering the match mid‐way through the third set to help turn the tide. Puerto Rico’s Juan Figueroa piled up a match‐ and tournament‐high 30 points, while teammate Ezequiel Cruz added 20 points and Jose Rivera followed with 14 points.
Canada controlled the net with a 15‐8 block advantage. Puerto Rico held the offensive advantage with a 71‐64 attack margin and 6‐2 edge in aces. Earlier in the tournament Canada defeated Puerto Rico in the preliminary round en route to finishing 3‐0 in Pool B and advanced directly to the semifinals. Puerto Rico reached the semifinals after needing to win a quarterfinal round match following a 1‐2 Pool B record. “I want to thank Puerto Rico for a tough match,” Canada captain Fred Winters said. “They made us earn it ‐ that’s the hardest match I’ve played. I didn’t have a match that hard in my pro season. We were tired and didn’t turn it on the entire match. We had spurts. Tomorrow’s going to be harder, no matter who we play.” Dominican Republic 3, Trinidad & Tobago 1 Dominican Republic scored a 25‐21, 22‐25, 27‐25, 25‐19 victory over Trinidad & Tobago Friday afternoon in the 5‐8 Classification Round to move into the fifth‐place match on Saturday. Jose Miguel Caceres paced Dominican Republic with 18 points, while Elnis Palomino contributed 17 points and Wilfrido Hernandez 16 points. Trinidad & Tobago’s Marc Honore both charted a match‐high 20 points and Nolan Tash added 18 points. The team stats were fairly even as Dominican Republic held a 4‐3 edge in aces and Trinidad & Tobago held a 10‐9 margin in blocks. Dominican Republic managed a 57‐52 advantage in attack points and had four fewer errors (29‐25). “The NORCECA zone has rose in level of play a lot. Between Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Dominican, there’s not a lot of difference,” Dominican Republic Coach Jacinto Campechano said. “I would like to give Trinidad congratulations because they have improved tremendously. In sports, someone always wins and someone always loses. We are lucky to be the winner today.” Mexico 3, Costa Rica 0 Mexico secured a 25‐19, 25‐19, 25‐16 victory over Costa Rica Friday afternoon in the 5‐8 Classification Round. Mexico was led by Carlos Guerra’s 15 points, including 13 of 17 on attacks. Daniel Vargas charted 11 points for Mexico. Richard Smith Hall contributed 11 points for Costa Rica and Esteban Escobar added nine points. Mexico was dominant at the service line with a 7‐1 ace advantage to go with a 7‐5 edge in blocks. Mexico will now play on Saturday at 15:00 for fifth place against the winner of Dominican Republic and Trinidad & Tobago played later today. Costa Rica will play the loser of Dominican Republic and Trinidad & Tobago at 13:00 on Saturday. “I am happy with the win today,” Mexico coach Jorge Miguel Azair said. “The match gave us a chance to rotate in all the players and get ready for tomorrow.”
