It was introduced to ‘strengthen and promote open justice’ in Victoria following ongoing concerns that the use of suppression orders by the courts in that state was placing the fundamental principle of open justice into jeopardy. The media, in particular, claimed that too many suppression orders were being made in Victoria compared to other jurisdictions in Australia and that many were imprecise and overly broad in scope and often contained insufficient limitations as to their duration. But is the Open Courts Act achieving its aims in reducing the number of suppression orders made in the Victorian courts? Has it resulted in improvements in their drafting? Chair of the day Rob Hines opened the meeting with atoast to Rotary International.

Announcements:

Frank O’Brien advised that the new date forDIK was 18/6 after several changes inarrangementsPresident George Mackie revealed that he hadattended the launch of Tony Thomas’ book andsaid that it was an elegant affair and that forthe first time in his experience he had seenTony lost for words. He also advised that the7/6/2016 was the date for three events:

June called Bringing the Light – the storyof 7 women. It is being screened at 6.30at the Nova Cinema and is an inspiringstory of a sustainable social enterprise.

Club Forum:President Elect Justine announced her goals for2016/17 to be:

*A happy, productiveclub

*A proven, systematicprocess in place forattracting and recruitingmembers

*A new membermentoring program inplace, with newmembers active andengaged

*A successful and wellattended District Conference (March 2017)

*A sustainable fundraising program in place

*An ongoing commitment to humanitarian service atdistrict level

The club’s Focus Plan developed during this rotaryyear (strategy on a page) was displayed and thenproject managers / directors spoke about individualcomponents of the plan.

Various matters were discussed and the full set ofslides are on the web-site.

Justine also handed out a document to membersasking them to indicate what area / project they wereinterested in being involved with for the year.Members who haven’t completed the document canfind it on the web-site.

Highlights were:

We need to determine a use for the trailerpreviously used for community villageA reminder that DIK can be used for communityprojects not just overseas aid.Rob Hines is keen to continue to exploreindigenous projects and/ or engagementopportunity with the indigenous communityIt was decided that we would probably notcontinue with the Fraternitas award as its valueto international house has diminished since thequantum of the award has reduced to $250
