Production Lareault has maintained in 2015 protocols and strategies designed in 2014 to insure highest plant quality. We kept our clonal verification trial coupled withmultiple virus detection in the germplasm banks. We increased our buffer zones sizes between the different plant classes. We kept improving our management strategiesto control virus vectors. We maintained double sampling of field for virus as well as results interpretation with recognized threshold. Not to mention Phytophthora fungus monitoring before harvesting. All these protocols and monitoring methods lead to better results in 2016.

5 Monitoring stepsImplementation of the germplasm bank :Since 2011, clonal verification trials have been added to ourselection protocols of mother plants. This protocol includesgenetic conformity assesment and fruit yield evaluation.Virus detection ( ELISA, RT-PCR et Indexing) is not only doneto the mother plant stage, but also to the elite stage justbefore nursery planting.

Exclusion and isolation : As early 2013 Luc Lareault nursery destroyed on a volontarybasis a portion of it’s yield to create a rupture in it’s supply,and start with plant material verified and tested. Weincreased the isolation radius of the nursery of manykilometers with a volontary destruction agreement of fruitgrowing locations, neighborhing the nursery. Also, we

increased our isolation distances between the differentstages of plants to implement security.

Vector Control :Phytosanitary controls of vectors were doubled in frequencyfor systemic products and foliar products. Monitoring ofpests has been reviewed and increased to three visits perweek, with a special care in fall and spring seasons.

Virus testings : We introduced in our production protocol, two virus testsfor SMYEV (Strawberry mild yellow edge virus) and SMOV(Strawberry mottle virus). Tests were added at the end ofeach propagation cycle : foundation block and certified.That means that your plants are tested twice before

shipping. Each test is performed by two independantlaboratories (MAPAQ and Private laboratory).

Thresholds levels : Our thresholds levels have been established followingdiscussions and meetings with Canadian and Americanresearch scientists. We have compare our methods withCalifornian and European nurseries to elaborate a protocolthat minimizes the risk for fruit growers who respect thestate of the art fruit production methods.

Like the name says, this is a Hardy blackberry that bears fruit early on thorny long canes. Similar to it’s wild counterpart,berries are larger and better suited to free picking. It will perform better in our winters but may need winter protectionin Zone 4 and colder.

Dwarf cherries introduced by the University of Saskatchewan are small trees with maximum height of 2,5 mand yields that can reach from 10 to 15 Kg of fruit per tree. These plants are extremely hardy and canwithstand temperature as low as -40oC. ( Zone 2b ). Fruits are of superior quality than those of traditionalhardy cherry trees ( Prunus cerasus ) such as the Evans and Montmorency varieties. Fruits are also biggerand sweeter. Picking season starts in July, lifespan of the stand can be of 20-25 years. Plants are self-

pollinating (Bees preferred). Plants must be protected from dominant winds. A pH of 6,5 and more is idealin a light soil, but other condition are tolerated. Pruning can be done in the spring after the 5th year ofgrowth. Never prune more than 20% of the bush canopy volume. Deers, squirrels, birds and caterpillars areamong their natural enemies.

Extremely hardy bushes, Haskaps are members of the Honeysuckle botanical genus. Haskap is a medium size erect bush with an open structure. It reaches a height of 1 m to 2 m according to the cultivar, and a widthof 1 m. Flower buds will sustain frost of -7°C in the spring and plants will resist to -45°C in the winter. Haskaps will thrive in a fertile soil with a good drainage. It can grow in a Ph range of 4,5 to 7,5. Pollinationrequires a minimum of three distinct cultivars.
