Welcome to Worship at St. Matthew’s August 14, 2016 We’re glad you’re here today! Welcome, brothers and sisters in Christ! It’s good to be here together to worship our Lord. We worship in the name of God, the Maker of heaven and earth; Jesus, the Messiah who teaches us how to serve others; and the Holy Spirit, counselor, comforter, cultivator of faith. Amen. Introduction to the Day: The word of God is a refining fire. Jesus is the great divide in human history. He invites our undivided attention and devotion. Today, in the assembly, we are surrounded by “so great a cloud of witnesses.” In the word and in the holy communion we are invited yet again to look to Jesus, “the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” Communion: All baptized Christians who celebrate the real presence of Christ in the bread and wine are invited to the Lord’s Table at the 7:30 service. Gluten-free wafers are available if you ask your communion server. Those who desire juice instead of regular wine, please tell this to the communion assistant. Due to the weight of the communion trays, you may be asked to take your glass of wine from the tray as it is presented to you. Altar Flowers are donated by Jim & Katie Karls in honor of their 5th wedding anniversary. Nametag Sundays - Every Sunday! We will wear nametags each week for a few weeks in an effort to help Pr. Ann get to know people on Sunday mornings. Thanks for your participation! Summer Worship Schedule: Sunday Worship times are 7:30, 8:30 and 10:15 a.m. through Labor Day weekend. The Prayer Chain continues to faithfully pray for the needs of the congregation and community. If you would like the Prayer Chain to be praying for your needs, please use the blue cards in the pews or contact the church office at 414-774-0441. You may also e-mail the church at [email protected] or [email protected] with a prayer request or if you wish to join the prayer chain.

God has promised to be our God and to let us be his people. May we focus confi-dently on the blessing of such a loving relationship as we worship God today.

Cross cards to be handed out today for food needed for July 27 meal. Cross Lunch ran short on food last month! Summer is a time of increased hunger for many, and that was no more evident than at Cross Lutheran Church’s June 22 meal, when our food fed 280 people, but could have fed 300. Our servers ran out of food. There were a lot of children among the lunch crowd. Thank you for all your generously made and donated food, and could we do even more in July? When cards are handed out on July 24, we hope you will be at church and will take one or two cards for the July 27 meal. Thank you! Additional Important Note: NO Nuts in any of the salads, please.

If you’d like to order a copy of the book through St. Matthew’s, please contact Pastor Matt by July 15th. Join us for this important discussion. As one reader reflects:

Could you live on $2 a day?I know that I certainly could not do so. But after reading the book $2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America, I now know the stories of people who really do manage to “live” on such a small amount of money. The authors, Kathryn Edin and H. Luke Shaeffer, have followed several people over a period of time to learn how and why they are living on such a small amount of money. It was difficult for me to relate to their generational poverty but I could understand their desiring generational family connections. I cannot imagine their strength, their persistence, and even optimism in their circumstances. The authors explain clearly why some federal
